This project was special to us. Not only is Sierra one of the sweetest brides that we've ever worked with but she is also an amazing singer and songwriter.
Make It Easy was written for her husband, Ryan, and was played as the first dance song for their wedding. Naturally, their wedding footage worked well within the film, and I knew she would be able to give a wonderful performance, but finding the perfect location for those performance shots turned out to be the biggest hurdle.
My favorite shot in is at 0:18 with Sierra standing there singing. As Sierra walked around she happened upon a path. The light and the backdrop were perfect so I had her stop for a take. Although we had scouted the location this spot was a surprise, and totally unplanned. I learned that it's worth it to take some time while you're shooting to explore and play with ideas.
Crew:
-Three people, me (Matt) as the shooter, Pacey there for moral support and assistance, and an additional assistant to help with gear.
Gear :
-Canon 1dxII in 4k, using Canon L primes and the Canon 24-105mm for the horseback riding shots.
Lighting:
-We couldn't' bring in any lights, so choosing the perfect location and time of day fo became key. I was able to have Sierra position in front of the mountains so that the sun gave her a nice backlight, and we bounced some light back onto her face.
Color Grading:
-Although it doesn't look like it, this was heavily processed inside of Davinci Resolve. There will be a course with the entire workflow here: geni.us/Resolv...

When I first started using Resolve, I had a huge problem importing the footage without screwing up the edit. I'll be covering a simplified workflow that will keep your edits locked, and the entire process for grading a music video like this and wedding films, Plus the power grades that were used for this. Power grades > LUTs 👍🏻, I'll explain later. -Matt
I own a 1dxII aswell and I've always been curious about your grading process... I really like the way you make those colors POP in all your films! I'm sure the SmallHD 500 serie you're using is for something, it seems like you always nail exposure, making the post-production so much easier

Looking forward to the color grading course! :18 is my favorite shot as well. The lighting is beyond beautiful, everything is perfectly lit. It almost looked like you flew a huge silk above the area, but you said you bounced it. I would love to see behind the scenes of this shot if you have any or want to share it. Amazing amazing work!
Thanks Chris, we have a lot of bts pictures. For that shot it was a nice, small cloud right in front of the sun with no bounce. I'll get some bts stuff out either in the course.

It was about 4pm. A small cloud softened Sierra a bit but let the sun directly hit the mountains.

this is way before the R5 came out. Shot on 1DXII - R5 does ok in lowlight, I'm using it a s a B cam and C70 as the main cam.
@@thefilmpoets Wow nice. I’m looking at some of your images and they’re super crisp despite what I would consider tough lighting conditions. Any advice on still getting a great image?
@@JaredRaines Lots of things make a great image, but if you can properly expose, use good lighting to your advantage, and learn good compositions you'll consistently make the best out of what's in front of you. Start with understanding light first.
How did you manage to carry the piano to a middle of nowhere.

Sorry for not responding! We rented a piano shell, two movers dropped it there with a lot of griping and a little help from me. Let’s just say I tipped them really well.

Two Q:
- in all wide shots with the piano the color are a little bit muted (lacked of saturation compared with the close-ups - same setup) and with a tint of blue. Because you loose the light and shoot against the sun (in sunset) ?

The wides don't have a bounce source of light like the tights, so that's probably the difference. Thanks! -Matt

This was the 1dx II and the Mavic Pro 1.
@@jackbisson9226 this was the original Mavic Pro with noise reduction. I mentioned a shot from this in the camera movement section of the mavic 2 pro review and tried to label it as an mp1 shot. Sorry for the confusion! -Matt
