FIRST DAY IN MY PHOTO BLIND - big surprise on the game camera and Tamron 150-600 G2 issues.

  • For the first time this season I am in my stationary photo blind to see how everything is down there and to trying to making the birds used to me being around. I am lucky to get a glimpse of quite a few magpies and then I am very pleased to see what my game camera has captured…
    I have got my Tamron 150-600mm G2 back from repair, but because of its behaviour I don’t fully trust it anymore.
    If everything goes as planned I am going to the forest this weekend to photograph some deer and to have a cozy time with some bushcraft - and the vlogging camera is coming with me:)

    ••• WHO I AM •••
    My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer. In this series of behind the scenes vlogs I want to share my fascination of nature with you and invite you behind the scene when I am out photographing the fascinating wildlife, the stunning landscapes and the wild nature. I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.
    For me nature photography is all about sharing the unique experiences and to put awareness to nature conservation. Furthermore my goal is to inspire as many as possible to get out and experience the true beauty of nature.
    “I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.”
    Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/earth/story/201602...
    Beside the many publications my photographs has been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.
    See you out there !
    All the best

      Morten Hilmer hi Morten, just a quick tip in case you want to review your files on your laptop again at a later stage. You don't need to double click on the files to open them in preview or QuickTime, just click on one file then press space bar and you will get a preview of the files without having to open it up. If you want it full screen press alt before space bar
      Hope that helps!

    A lot of commentary about wanting you to start doing voice overs on your videos. Don't do it Morton; I love the feeling of being in the blind with you. I know it's harder to do but it's what makes you so great, my friend. Keep taking us along with you!

    I have a 1 meter length of 150mm black pipe in my hide that i leave sticking out the lens hole when i'm not there to get the birds used to movement. I hang it from a piece of string so that it blows in the wind.

    Your videos are awesome as is. No need to worry about if you are talking or not talking. Just do as you do. It is hard to vlog and get the wildlife shot for certain. So when you need to get the shot, toss us aside and get the shot and show us afterwards. Your excitement is so contagious! That fox on the game cam was amazing for certain! Cheers my friend!

    Morton you are very engaging and connecting don't alter this fact as while you chat & freely give of yourself this is for me at least the real appeal it tells me that we share similar values keeping in mind that its a privilege to be so close to nature that the photographs are the reward when they come for being there & that there is so much luck in actually getting "the shot". I am reminded though that I think it was Gary Player who when asked how he was successful answered "Its all down to luck" (paraphrased) "...but funny the more I practise the luckier I get" ;)

    I found the silent vlogs quiet relaxing. I have to agree. The Nikon 200-500mm lens is incredible. I understand is nice to have that extra reach of 600mm. It was a hard decision for me but I stayed with Nikkor and I love it.

    My tamron 150-600 G2 has changed my photography so much its hard to explain. I am doing so much BIF the last 2 years, twice at Bosque, once to Texas Gulf coast for the Whooping Crane and locally in North Texas. Its sharp and do easy to walk and hand hold. My shots are excellent with 7d 2. simply put it feels nothing is so far out with a 600mm and it was so cheap compared to an older used 600 f4, for nearly 3 times the cost. I had a 600 prime for 3 days and knew it was not for me and my style of shooting.

    Hi Morton, Love your channel!
    I have a Tamron 150 - 600 lens as well and I too am having focus issues.
    I have a D7100 and a D500 and it has acted up on both bodies.
    I have had "focus hunting" episodes, missing focus completely, and times when it doesn't even attempt to lock onto the subject.
    I love my lens as well but it is frustrating to say the least!
    When it does work, it works very well......just not consistently!
    It will soon be going back for it's 3rd warranty trip and my local dealer told me he is going to push them to give me a brand new lens.
    The 6 year warranty is great but this will be the 3rd time in barely 4 years.
    If it isn't fixed or replaced this time I think I will look at the Nikon 200 - 500 mm.
    I hope you resolve your lens problems too!!
    Keep up the great work!
    Craig.
    Alberta, Canada.

      @@MortenHilmer I absolutely love the cover photo and the story behind it is really fascinating, I could really relate to the feeling you described in the video with actually living through the viewfinder so that you really are at the end of the zoom. That feeling is truly priceless and you described very well. You are my greatest inspiration to keep going out to shoot nature and I genuinely agree with your motto of prefering the mood of a photo rather than the technical parts of it, keep rocking!

  • @rantanplan9863
    @rantanplan9863 5 лет назад +2

    I can force that issue on my Tamron, if I have set the focus to 10m instead of infinity. So maybe something with that switch is wrong on your one. What I mean is, that your Tamron maybe locks the focus distance on its own, that would explain the noise of the running focus motor.

  • @alanscott.online
    @alanscott.online 5 лет назад

    My Tamoron G1 was perfect until it got wet. Even though it was supposedly repaired by Tamron I have had auto focus issues with it ever since. It's a brilliant lens except for its moisture protection problem. Good luck with yours.

    I liked your previous video and feel you should do more like it. It becomes more about the sounds of the forest and more like what you actually would be experiencing. You get lost in all the noises and I love it - very relaxing. I am amazed how well you tell a story with just the pictures and sounds of the forest. If anything I think it is helping your video making, since you can't just rely on your chat to make it interesting. Don't get me wrong, I like you talking also - I specifically like it when you have something to say - you can tell.... you can ramble a bit less and there is a bit more flow to what you say.

  • @crs1flo
    @crs1flo 5 лет назад

    Hy Morten! Regarding the tamron 150-600 lens I own this model and I use it with D500. Sometimes in dim contrast/situations it's hunting focus but I don't have the problem that You described: hearing the motor inside running but not moving the focus. Sometimes if it's not catching the focus regardless the situation it jumps at "past infinity" i think and i have to reacquire the focus. It's a 3rd party lens and i don't expect to function exactly like a first party one (even if some 3rd party lenses function flawless) but I love this lens!
    Still your problem is different and i never heard this to any other colleague.

    I've had that issue with my Tamron 150-600 G2 a bunch, especially with smaller birds. It seems to just go to infinity and then just stay there and the only solution I've found is get it back to close with manual focus and then try to focus again. Sometimes my solution has been to turn the camera off and back on

    Morten, can you share the story behind your lovely green Stanley thermos? It sure looks like it has some stories to tell. Just recently bought one myself for hiking in the woods. Build quality seems superb!

    Well done Morten, I've never seen that blind before, it is a new thing you just made?
