BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY FROM MY PHOTO BLIND - wildlife photography behind the scenes in Denmark

- Bird photography is one of the very challenging genre of wildlife photography - especially when photographing birds of prey and other shy birds like crows and magpies.
It's early morning and I am on my way to my photo blind to see if I am lucky to get some nice photos of birds. I have to get there before the sun sets, so the alarm goes off at 5AM!
Join me behind the scenes this awesome day of wildlife photography.

••• WHO I AM •••
My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer. In this series of behind the scenes vlogs I want to share my fascination of nature with you and invite you behind the scene when I am out photographing the fascinating wildlife, the stunning landscapes and the wild nature. I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.
For me nature photography is all about sharing the unique experiences and to put awareness to nature conservation. Furthermore my goal is to inspire as many as possible to get out and experience the true beauty of nature.
“I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.”
Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/earth/story/201602...
Beside the many publications my photographs has been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.
In spring 2017 I published my book Silence of the North: shop.mortenhilmer.com/product...
See you out there !
All the best
Morten Hilmer
I have now completely finished watching all the video installments on Morten's channel. And all the comments have it nailed down. This isn't about a guy blathering on about his gear and all of the photo aspects. This is about a story teller telling us about his love of nature, and how he himself goes about getting closer to what he loves. The images are the gravy. With some good b-roll, and including US -- the viewer in everything he's thinking, everything he's seeing, his Danish accent all come together to make it enjoyable to people without cameras or interests in photographing nature. It's like 15 minutes you can be somewhere else in your day, along with this friend of yours from Denmark. He's only just started this channel and I'm sure as the weeks progress, we are in for better everything. By far one of the best SUBs I've undertaken all year.
I came here for nature photography -- what I got was a true adventure.
I am absolutely amazed and truly humbled after reading your fantastic compliment. This means so much more to me than you might know. It is so encouraging to hear how I reach you and it makes me so happy that you feel the adventure and my love of nature and most important, that you are enjoying to watch it. I really really hope you will like to follow me on this journey :) All the best wishes from Denmark:)
Same feeling here as the commenter , He just put it to words :)
Absolutely spot on with your comments John. The images, whilst superb, are simply a by-product of the story as far as I am concerned. Love this style of vlogging. Wasn’t too interested in wildlife/nature photography before finding Morten’s channel but now I am totally engrossed. Currently working my way through his playlist and am enjoying every one.
You nailed it, the images are the gravy....
me too.I think so.I follow up this channel from Thailand.
I am 26 y.o man, but i always wanted to cry, when i see nature like this. So naked, real and right in all perspectives, untouched by humans
I love the way he's passion abt something and the way he excited abt everything that he does
Moral of the video... THIS MAN LOVES COFFEE.
His love of coffee spoke to me, so I subbed and liked. If I met him in real life I would take a wildlife photo of him because he is my spirit animal.
Caffeine addict
True
yes 13-minute video is of waste
@@moumitasinha3682 why do you say something
I always feel as if I am with Morten on his shoots during his videos always a joy to watch.... and his love of coffee is always amusing
Such great advice, Morten, to give the birds ten to fifteen minutes to get settled there and feel safe. I know how hard that is, but you're so right, that to resist taking photos will ultimately result in more better photos. Thanks for this!
Another superb video. Thank you Morten. 🙂
Thank you so much Matthew😀
I can't watch any Morten video without bawling my eyes out. I don't know why but probably because of the beauty of nature and the love of this person that comes through is absolutely amazing and nothing I ever saw on any channel or any media. I am a huge nature lover myself and I am so happy that you can do this and share it as well. Can't wait for the next adventure.
I don't know what I like more, your love of coffee or your photos :) definitely the photos of course and these vLogs, so awesome can't wait for the next one!
Totally awsome!!! More of this please!
Love the pacing of your videos, thank you for sharing them with us :)
Great stuff Morten, to see someone suffer for their art makes the end result so much more rewarding!
Another great film Morten. It's nice to someone else appreciate Magpies & Crows, they are seen here in the UK by many as pests and vermin but they are wonderful intelligent birds. Long live the Corvids.
Nice video, keep them coming, love your presentation.
Another fantastic instalment, great insight to a day in a hide. Great Images!
Your videos never disappoint!
Thank you so much, Brad, for your comment, it's so great to read! 😊
In England, Scotland and Wales the crows are mainly black, but there are hooded in Ireland. I know when on the wing the crows are really aggressive towards buzzards and I’ve never seen them on the ground with one. The creature that turns into a butterfly is a caterpillar in English. Your passion and commitment for your subject is a wonderful thing to see, and I could never stop learning off your fieldcraft. Another amazing video and think you for the intimate view of you at home.
I now watch this video in the mornings: it relaxes me, to be guided through Morten’s morning preparation for wildlife photography. And it inspires me for the coming weekend. 👏🏼 Thanks!
That picture of the bussard and the crows surrounding him somehow reminds me of school, when the "cool-kids" surround the "outsider".
The enthusiasm and excitement that u show while filming and photography is very catchy. Thanks
Watching it in 2020 waiting for this lockdown to end. And im like this is the best channel i could watch. Lots love ❤️ a big fan since 2 years i think
Thank you for taking us along , enjoyed your encounter with the birds!
Really enjoyed the b-roll footage first in this video, slo-mo shots looked awesome of waking up and getting ready. More please!
Your videos give me the feeling that we are friends, that all of us here are friends and that is something beautiful.
I’m whispering too :) thank you sharing the wonderful experience !!
great story Morten. Thank you for sharing it and all the tips in it.
Thanks a lot for sharing your journey with us again ;). A lovely video and some lovely pics
The atmosphere you create is magnetic, it's just as if I'm in your blind with you.I use a permanent hide
myself,so I know how you feel when your plans work out,it still makes my heart pound, after many years trying to succeed.
Your passion, dedication and fieldcraft is to be greatly admired.
Thank you so much for leaving such a nice and encouraging comment. I wish you a lot of luck with your birds:) Ha an awesome Thursday evening.
That was fun. Thankyou for bringing us along on your adventure.
Another great video Morten.. love your passion & the fact you didn't want to get closer for a better shot or angle so as not to disturb them. Thanks great video 🙏🙏
I love your video's Morten. They give me peace and quietness in a fully scheduled day. You inspire me in starting a vlog as well, but your shots are amazing and the edits are very well. Please continue to show us your trips and adventures.
Thank you Morten. Lovely video, as always.
Your videos sure do keep getting better and better! also seems like you have a favorite sweater :)
Haha! I do love that sweater! Thanks so much for your message, really appreciated.
Seriously, you're like the Thomas Heaton of wildlife photography. You're incredibly passionate about your work, and that makes for very inspirational videos. I get excited every time I see the notification that you've uploaded something new!
Thanks a lot David - so kind of you to write and what an awesome compliment. Yes Mr. Heaton is really good - definitely.
Morten Hilmer You deserve it! Your photographs are top-notch. I'm so thankful for your willingness to share not only your images, but to bring us along on your adventures. I'll be grabbing the 150-600 by the end of the year and your videos will keep me inspired and motivated to get out with it!
Top Notch! Made me crave a cup of good fresh coffee!
Haha - so glad to hear;) See that is what I call inspiration👍
Coffee coffee coffee Know exactly but your flask is really rather small
What I love about your films is that you really set the scene and put us right in the moment. You are a natural storyteller, man. Thank you!
Thanks Simon, what a lovely comment! 😁
I really enjoy the music you’ve chosen for your videos. It’s nice and relaxing but also conveys a lot of emotion to go along with the stunning photos 👍🏼
Lovely moments in Nature!
Wonderful photos! Morten, I love your videos!!! Your enthusiasm is so contagious. Thank you for bringing us into your world!!!
Brilliant. I have purchased a hide and its been in the bag for a year simply because of nowhere to place it! But I get everything you talk about the stealth the anticipation & the joy when it all comes together. Terrific videos very instructive & I like your calm approach.
Great video. The bird blind looks nice! Can you show more of it? Inside, outside, etc? Looked like a nice cozy place especially for us taller folk. Cheers!
Hi, thank you for commenting! I will make a note of this and try and include it in a upcoming video, thanks! It is a lovely place to be, and it's such a nice feeling to be so close to the animals without disturbing them.
Canadian Sasquatch du
Loved it. Thank you so much Morten
This is why I love Fridays! Good to see you out with the 600mm. Can't wait to get out this weekend!
I haven't commented before on your videos, though I have watched several. I really admire your skill and efforts with wildlife photography. It looks like it would be wonderful to have a permanent blind such as this.
Really fantastic backgriund ! Thanks for sharing1
Morten you are the best and my favourite wildlife photographer
Desperately waiting for tommorow's photographer's friday.
Hope! This time in photographer's friday we will get to know about your lenses and learn more about how to use them
So nice to hear this! I'm really really sorry to disappoint you, but I won't be able to upload a video every Friday. I will try and upload as often as I can, but with Spring coming, and different work appointments, it's sometimes quite difficult to get the videos done on a regular basis. I will put the lenses on my list of videos though, thank you so much for suggesting this. 😃
This really opened my eye on how vast of a photography work is! It does include a special variety of skills needed. Pumped me up to work on with my career.
Hello Morten,
Since you made a class video for us again,
Am always surprised with what enthusiasm you get at a thing.
Personally, I take my hat off to you and your work.
Thank you so much for writing me such a nice compliment:)
Superb! Really look forward to your updates. Thank you again.
Thank you for your great photos and emotions around this. You are radiates of pure kindly energy and this is unbelievable. God bless you and all what are you doing.
Thank you for sharing this film (and others) really inspirational, I like your occasional mistakes (sitting on the plastic etc) great fun
Brilliant vid 😊 I think you need a bit more padding for soundproofing in that blind ☺ its amazing isnt it how many normal things make soooo much noise when your trying to be quiet 😨. Great pics you got there too 🤗👍.
Amazing video Morten. Your passion is so genuine and motivational!
Such a fresh, inspiring, beautiful video.
Love the video, it's like watching a Thomas Heaton video, but about wildlife! I'm really looking forward too improving my skills with these great tips :D Thank you and keep up the good work

Fantastic video again. Great opening sequence with getting ready etc. That all takes time and extra effort to produce quality uploads. Thx awfully, Morten.
I followed you on Instagram Morton! Always love the videos and your photos!
I love this channel. Morten is inspiring and is obviously a very honest knowledgeable nature photographer. I recently morphed into a nature photographer (from street photography), when I moved to a very rural location in southern Illinois. I would love to hear from anyone who has been involved in nature photography for some time, about their opinions on use of spotting scopes for nature photo work. Keep the great work Morten !
Awesome video sir

Excellent video, Pictures and place, looking forward to the next video.
I have no words to say anything
Appreciate Your Hard work 👏🏻
God bless you
These videos are really fun to watch! It's very interesting to see how you do wildlife photography. Most entertaining for me to see is what you think about in your composition of the photos, how you behave near the animals to not disturb but also to get the results you speak of.
The documentary/vlog format of this channel is just great! would really love to see more of your trips and small hikes. Thank you for putting the time in this and making videos about it! :D
Que genial!!! 😍😍😍🤗📷📷📷
Great video Morten. Getting up early really pays off.

I always return to this vlog. I thoroughly enjoy it, the process of preparing to head out to photograph in the wee hours of the morning. 👍🏼 Oh, and that little crawling insect is called a caterpillar. Cheers!
