Crash damage is one thing, but simple fact is with the points Alex and Franco scored, they earned the team an extra 9mil or so by finishing ahead of Sauber. Alex also pretty much earned them an extra 20 to 30mil in 2023 by essentially taking 7th place in the constructors on his own.
Crashes and costs are never good, but you have to weigh that against how much they can bring the team when they do score points.
And lets be honest, high costs do not mean lots of crashes. You can cost the team more in one crash than several depending on the severity of the crash and what is damaged.
Potentially one driver could crash out every race and still cost the team less in damages than one crash by the other driver, but the driver who only crashed once can bring in more money through manufacturer prize money. Carlos is a prime example of this. He did not have that many crashes but still ranks high in the damage costs, but brought in significant money by helping secure 2nd in the manufacturers championship.
Sargeant cost the team shit loads and earned them nothing.

I don't get this "Franco drives for Williams, he should know not to crash" argument. This is the responsibility of Vowles for bringing a rookie into a team with financial and infrastructural difficulties. Rookies should be given a free pass on crashing as long as it's not happening practically every race, and most importantly, if the rookie is showing strong pace and potential, and that's definitely something that Franco showed.

Carlos is not stupid. I really think people are underestimating his move to Williams. By all means he would have stayed at Ferrari if that was an option, but he picked Williams from the options he did have. James Vowles is pretty legendary and everyone who works with him agrees he is incredible, and with the new financial backing the team has, I think Carlos has been convinced by a long-term plan lead by a talented mind.

    • @thomasvrielink299

Based on his options the choice for Williams definitely makes sense. But those options were slim pickings, and thinking that choosing Williams over Sauber and Alpine is smart does not mean Williams is a great option for Sainz. He simply chose the best of a bad bunch. It might still work out in 2026 if Mercedes does what it did in 2014, but even then I think there will now be two more competent teams with that engine as opposed to just one back then.

I may be wrong but Williams seems to have a policy (from the RUS days) that the points are earned on Saturday. How many times have they gone full tilt on Sat only to crash in either Q2 or 3 & in race slipped from their positions due to poor race pace. I'd love to see them ease up on Qualy & learn to have a car that can make up places on Sunday. I always feel let down when I'm watching either Albon or COL start in the top say 12 only to end up much lower. I still think COL would have been an excellent fit along side Albon, no idea why they need such a big name when they have at least a season or two before being top 5 ready?

Sargeant was abysmal, come on now. The fact that Colapinto managed to score points in his second race with no experience or preparation says a lot about how bad he was.

      Alex Albon:$4.6 million in damage
      Logan Sargent: $3.0 million
      Franko colipinto:$1.7 million.
These were published by the fia at the end of the 2024 season. Albon is actually 2nd on the list for the most damage last year. Its a joke he is rated so highly. Struggled a lot when Franko joined. Williams should have kept Colopinto and got rid of Albon as he matched Alex straight away and will only get better, Albon is overatted but he speaks with a british accent so is loved by the press.

@andrewstorm8240 as did Colopinto in his 1st 3rd of an f1 season. Albon has been in f1 for a long time now, and the team would have even more money if he didn't crash. He is not scoring enough points to justify all the damage he does but that gets glossed over. Only Colopinto gets singled out. Fact is Albon had a hard time with Colopinto, and has been exposed. He is on a hiding to nothing next year so we will see plenty more damage from him trying to keep up with Carlos.

I feel like people have rose-tinted glasses on when talking about Franco since he scored points in his debut. The fact is that Franco is just as crash-happy as Logan was.

Points matter more for the team rather than cost of crashes. More points = better results = more money at the end of the championship. Especially for Williams given that they should be higher on the championship if Logan pulled his weight.

@@sora3 I 100% agree that points matter. But prior to Brazil Alpine had 16 points, and Williams ended the season with 17. In Brazil, Alpine scored 33 points against retirement and DNS from Williams. If you crash out then you can't score points. Sure this year Williams ended 29 points behind Racing Bulls so Franco's crashes didn't lose them any position. But let's be honest, Williams left a lot on the table in Brazil which was chaotic. What if next time Williams is in Haas' position and loses the 6th position by 7 points.
