  • Ariss Grutter is a co-owner of Awl Together Leather, a shoe-repair and custom-leatherwork shop in Vancouver, Canada. They show us how they restore a $6,000 Dior handbag that was previously poorly redyed and whose color is bleeding and transferring to the customer's clothes. This includes stripping the old dye, redyeing the bag, remaking the handles, and reassembling the bag.

    Is there any kind of standard where it's no longer a Dior bag? Would a hardcore Dior collector object to the handle being remade and consider it not to be authentic? Could you entirely replace the lining or entire panels and still have it be authentic?

    • @charlotteroberts
      @charlotteroberts 2 года назад +2

      I would imagine there are degrees of "integrity", such as using authentic or same-standard materials and processes.
      For instance, I believe a pair of Chanel shoes dyed another colour would still be Chanel shoes, but considered modified. A collector would likely have their own criteria for assessing "authenticity" in their collections -- would it be on display or need to be functional?

    It looks like the original handles had some kind of (severely cracked) edging or piping on them. Could that have been duplicated?

    • @christopherfeatherley
      @christopherfeatherley 2 года назад +3

      That edge cote was done with edge kote (a type of paint), which over time cracks from moisture or heat or even movements over time. You can strip it off and reapply another coat, but I doubt that was the original coating. I think that it was done by the repair shop who did a poor job. I assume this because luxury brand's tend to avoid using edge kote (it degrades very fast)

    • @christopherfeatherley
      @christopherfeatherley 2 года назад +2

      You're much better off dyeing then burnishing the edges with wax, which gives it a smooth grip that never really cracks

    How much is it to fix up an expensive bag like that? & is there a price difference for all brands??? & if so, Why? I didn't know that a purse or bag could be fixed. Here I've just been reluctantly tossing them (eventually) once the handles crack and stretch out

    • @subramaniamchandrasekar1397
      @subramaniamchandrasekar1397 2 года назад

      I do not see the idea of buying expensive bags for a few thousand dollars. Just buy a low cost bag and throw once it goes bad or keep using to show you value old things. Nobody around you will be interested in having an exotic bag or a cheaper one. It is only the person who bought thinks high of it.
      Same as the high priced wrist watches. Who cares? Whatever is worn outside, the person is the same. Regards.
