- Leather craftsman Gerry Gallagher has over 30 years of experience repairing luxury handbags and is the owner of Leather Surgeons in Philadelphia. He shows us how he restores a burned Chanel Jumbo Classic Flap Bag. This includes disassembling the bag, cleaning it, cutting out the burned leather, quilting a new piece of caviar leather, replacing the lining entirely, and reassembling the bag.

How A $3,000 Burned Chanel Flap Bag Is Professionally Restored | Refurbished - Кино
I’ve had several of my Chanel bags restored from Leather Surgeons and I’m here to tell you that they do an AMAZING job. The price is very reasonable as well!!!
Would you be willing the prices for some services? Or the range of prices if you don't feel comfortable with the details?
@@puetwa Sure! So for a full bag spa (cleaning, restructuring, reglazing the hardware) it would cost about $500. Now the repair that he is doing in this video may cost more due to the hole.
@@cjohnson6634 super, thank you very much for that info! :) I also love that it's called "bag Spa" :) cause everyone deserve some relaxation :)
@@ahmednisar2359 I would check the authenticity of the bag for that price. Chanel holds their value, so I would be very skeptical about a $10 Chanel bag
@@ahmednisar2359 That’s great!
Im not into purses and nor do i care about them but man this was extremely satisfying
A lot of girls: PARDON?!?
14yo on Instagram: OmG whaT dId yOu say?!??
(I got to be the 1,000th upvote.) I wholeheartedly agree with you. The fact that you cannot even tell is wild.

There is a whole ASMR RUclips Chanel that’s dedicated to fixing/cleaning designer items like this. I low key watch it to relax. 😭
I used to restore antique furniture such as tables, chairs etc. I really respect any work that restores as opposed to throwing away. It is expensive but it always worth it. Preserve your things don't replace them if possible. I know this isn't viable for everyone.
Today we spend more money fixing the bag than it cost to manufacture the whole bag
great job fixing tho
Could have been limited, rare or it has some good memories 🤷🏼♂️
The bag was given to Dorothy as a 50th bday gift from her late husband. So she would definitety have the bag fixed than buy another one.
To be fair, the price in the title is wrong, a classic flap is now around $6000+
It's better for the environment if everyone would just keep the same item and just repair it instead of buying a new one
This much sustainable than buying a whole new purse. And the ripping sound of the bag with the knife, I need more of that 😱😱😱
Hermoso trabajo
Guess you don’t know what ASMR is
@@Hey_Jamie I had to look it up:
Autonomous sensory meridian response: a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck, as experienced by some people in response to a specific gentle stimulus, often a particular sound.
"ASMR is triggered by things like whispering voices, paper tearing, and scalp massage"
They have all kinds of bags, and they are cheap and good quality *luxdups*
Damn people who do this are so talented
Yeah it’s really incredible how they do it!!
So is the little kid fabricating these in a sweatshop
They are mostly meticulous. You'd be surprised by how far attention to details can bring you.
@@trixonic6934 ...... uhh..
@@user-zx2et9lf8y have a heart. wont you?
I'm reading the comments and it appeared a lot of these people don't know Chanel, Leather surgeon does amazing work for reasonable price. I send him all my Chanel whether its for restoration of vintage pieces or just a touch up spa. Their service is so valued by Chanel and Hermes collector.
Agree.
meanwhile.. in many countries...
starvation.
@@tatsumakisenpukyakku5576 well, go help them then.
@@tatsumakisenpukyakku5576 I’m willing to be you never once donated or helped any of them either. Keep your own house in order armchair activist. If you so much as own any gaming system or fancy phone you’re in the same pile.
how much would this resto cost. I do watch restoration and based on complexity i’d guess 1-2k but i think fashion ppl will pay a premium.
This is art honestly.
Half of me is like, “why give a sh*t about a Chanel purse? What’s the point?” And then the other half of me is seriously impressed with this master craftsman at work. Lol
I think it's kinda like those Fabergé eggs, or property, they don't lose their value, so they can be resold in the future, so they're basically an investment. Then again, this one was damaged...
I'd have this one a standard vintage bag because it saves another one being made
Because that Chanel bag is worth 7000€ + actually lol . it’s not zara , it’s Chanel
apparently, the bag was given to the owner by her late husband as a gift, so im guessing all the fond memories that bag holds (haha) would be the reason why they wanted it fixed
Because it’s one less purse in the landfill. Because it’s made with real leather. Because it cost so much so it’s worth spending to repair. Because the owner is probably sentimental about it. Because it’s still got a lot of years left in it. Because it creates an income stream for excellent craftsman like this guy.
I could watch stuff like this all day. So satisfying and relaxing watching something broken being made new again. I vote for a ASMR version!
Insider is not making asmr
you should watch the “handbag clinic official” channel. they restore old or damaged handbags, shoes, etc.
An* ASMR version
If you dont really care about the handbag aspect in particular I can strongly recommend "Baumgartner Restorations" he does painting restorations for hours on end with just his soothing voice and the sound of little brushstrokes and some nail spitting in the background
@@JaLuBru I love him! I have watched him for about a year now and it’s the best thing ever.
He is a GENIUS. He made the process look easy. He is truly GIFTED.
YES, he is!!
*luxdups* I want this. It doesn't matter where they are made. It depends on artisans and quality inspection.
I'm just here to say I like that tiny anvil.
I came to to comments to see if anyone else mentioned the tiny anvil 💖
I have a vintage Chanel bag I found at an estate sale, and I hope day I can find someone to restore it back its former glory like this!
Go for them (Leather Surgeons)! Gerry and his company are well-known in the luxury purse community for their professionalism and competence.
@@bagaholicmom2573 how much does this cost? Asking out of curiosity
@@kamizilla2267 you'd have to send Leather Surgeons an email along with the photos of the damaged purse and Gerry will get back to you with his quote. From my own experience with bad corner rubbing on my Chanel Wallet on Chain, he quoted me $300.
@@bagaholicmom2573 ah, okay thanks
Send it to this person!
If you have disposable income you refurbish or restore what you own, you don't chuck it.
Hopefully everyone buying these bags has disposable income. I love luxury but it’s not worth debt or having no nest egg.
@@msi8311 some people save up. Luxury bags are also considered investment pieces, and sometimes, like in this case, they’re gifts from loved ones.
That’s a fabulous repair. I never thought it could be done that well.
I like to think the repairing of these items makes them all the more unique and thus no doubt all the more valuable to their owners.
Regardless of the cost of the repair, it's wonderful to watch a craftsman at work.
The Leather Surgeons are true artisans! I’ve had several of my Chanel bags repaired or sent in for a spa treatment and they are always beautifully done.
Customer service is fantastic and their fees are very reasonable. I’m a true fan of their work and wouldn’t trust my Chanel with anyone else! Gerry is the absolute best! ❤️
Idk why this is in my recommendation but thx I enjoyed
The precision and detailing behind this restoration is insane
Amazing work, Gerry! And this is why I continue to be a Leather Surgeon’s customer 🙌
Skillfully done! And 'Leather Surgeons' is such a cool name for a business in their line of work. 👍
Wow, amasing restoration! The bag looks like it's completely new.
You're a magician, thank you very much for such a useful lesson))
OMG there's no signs of the repair at all , its like a new bag. I never seen anything like this ever. Its an incredible craftsmanship and knowledge !
That contractor' liability insurance should have paid for the repair/replacement.
Ehh that depends. If you get a painter for your sealing he can say you don't have to clear the whole room but if something drips it isn't my fault.
Same could be said for the closet. You either clear it, or risk damage on your own account.
I sure hope so.
@@rikvanpaddenburg3495 the light could’ve started a fire if it was hot enough to burn through a leather purse, so absolutely the owner has a right to be upset. Especially because the workers didn’t say she needed to move the bag. They stuck the light in front of it and burned one of her handbags.
Wow, that looks fantastic! Amazing repair job, you'd never know there was a hole now. Thank you for sharing. :)
Absolutely amazing job! Perfection. You would never know there used to be such damage there.
A man that's passionate about their craft is SO attractive!
Gerry Gallagher ROCKS!!! He is so talented at his trade!!! Thank you Leather Surgeons for the work you do!!!
I need a 10 hours sound of just him cutting stitches , so satisfying
Wow. Artist are in every thing we wear. We see …. Absolutely gorgeous work. Thank you for sharing
I sent a bag to Gerry and he is def the real deal! Love him
Wow you did a SUPER good job. I was thinking I would be able to tell the difference but you took my breath away!!!
Wow!!!! You’re a true artist. This is absolutely amazing.
This is actually phenomenal craftsmanship!!!
Your quality of work is probably better than the 2021 Chanel now too!
Amazing!
Purse of Theseus, at what point does the Chanel back remain a Chanel bag and when does it becomes a well-done restoration?
Chanel directs people to Gerry for restoration and he stocks their original leather and hardware for the repairs. So it’s still Chanel :)
@@blacknoise I think you missed the philosophical question of the thread haha
@@jase87 haha yes looking back on that I realize it. Thanks ☺️
I thought of exactly this and was so happy to see your comment! If your handbag doctor replaces the parts of a Chanel bit by bit until there's nothing original left, can Chanel sue him for creating a knock-off? 😂
We get it, you took Philosophy 101 in college. Nobody cares.
This looks so hard but it’s so satisfying when he cuts it
Simply AMAZING work! 👏🏼👏🏼
Gerry, You, Sir, are da bomb ! That is truly a masterful restoration . Thank you for your explanation. Masterful skiiving. Great to see an artisan in the USA.
You did a marvelous job on that purse. You would of never known & now it looks like it did off the store shelf!👍🔥

My kind of asmr, so satisfying to watch
Incredible workmanship, you are extremely talented!
Excellent restoration work. The repaired Chanel bag looks like new! The owner of the bag must be thrilled.
This dude got mega skills
thanks for the tutorial, i'm about to go try this out myself
Fantastico questo artigiano!quanta abilità e quanta professionalità!Grazie bellissimo video!!!!!❤️🌹
Impressive repair. But its hard to imagine how a light bulb got hot enough to burn leather. Its pretty tough stuff. Maybe a halogen bulb.
That's why I am calling bS on her claims.a.light bulb did it.
They accumulate heat over time. When I was a child I left a piece of clothing over a lamp an after a couple of minutes I started to smell smoke and ran over to the lamp. That's why it can be a cause for fires.
Lightbulbs can and do burn holes. A hole was burnt into my new sofa chair from an expose lighbulb in the suv while bringing it home.
@@zack9912000 when I was a kid, I had a doll that would glow in the dark. I left it way to close to the bulb and her leg melted. Didn’t take long. Heck I had an easy bake oven when I was a kid.. it cooked cakes with a light bulb.
@@Selakora Jrbsjsnwjsn reminds me of how I was still afraid of the dark when I was a teenager, but also couldn’t sleep with the lights on. I had a lamp that I put a shirt over so it would be enough light to make me feel safe but not too much. They were LED lights, but over time it completely melted the shade around it. Ended up being unusable without a shirt over it after that :/
People who do this kind of thing always amaze me. Lovely work.
Welcome to an episode of where quarantine has took me.
As a medical student, he talks just like a surgeon explaining through out the operation.
This looks like an expensive process. Probably costs as much as the purse
Probably roughly $1,000-$1,200
The purse is worth around $5000, gauging by the discontinued single flap model
@@xLOVEMimi actually over $8000 ease now
Sentimental value is priceless imo
he prob charges a decent fee bc fashion ppl will pay but yeah the work is pretty simple. he uses like 3 tools - craft knife, glue and saddle stitching machine. I feel like this type of work is more common in places like japan and parts of europe but yeah Americans bug out about traditional ‘craftsmanship’ bc it doesn’t really exist here.
Amazing! I would love to be able to make something damaged new again!
Beautiful restoration! 🤩
My girl bought a second hand prada bag for a really good price because it had a single mark on the inside, online it says it costs $1500 new
LOL wow, literally nobody would know it even has a mark on the inside unless she told them for some reason. That’s such a weird reason to sell a bag, but hey at least she got it lol
Am I the only one who loves any random good looking bag doesn't care what brand it is??
Unreal! Amazing craftsmanship. 👍
Sad thing is Chanel deems all "unauthorized" repairs that the bag is now fake. But this man is extraordinarily talented
He said he had the leather maybe he is authorized?
@@stiggy60426 Chanel does repairs in-house. Anyone can buy Caviar leather.
Makes no difference, channel doesn't certify their bags for clients to sell, so if she wants to sell the bag is up for the buyer to decide if it cares about the repairs, it may even get a discount, but with the price increases she can still make a profit out of that. But as another comment said, this was her 50th birthday gift from her late husband so I don't believe she would sell, so it makes even less of a difference
Great Job. So beautifully done.👍💪
So perfect. Amazing job with this !!
I’m so glad my bag repair is in these expert hands!!
No way~~~~!!! That is so amazing. He is so talented! 👍
Fantastic! Really enjoyed watching your care and talent...

Amazing work! would've cried a river if this happened to me and would really pool resources just to get in touch with you.
That's amazing to me. Awesome repair work, this type of stuff is extremely difficult to do.
The background music while he is fixing the bag sounds like you are in the spa or a yoga session. 😅
Wow. Amazing work.
Wow! It’s a good thing that light was up against such a high quality bag or it could have burned down the house. Hoping the contractor is paying for the restoration plus smoke damage.
Incandescent bulbs are garbage
Right! I would’ve sued the company to be honest. They ruined an $8,000 bag (thankful she knew such a fantastic restoration company), and nearly burned down her home. I can’t even imagine if the bag hadn’t been there. Could’ve destroyed the whole house.
Wow 😲 great work!
This was surprisingly therapeutic, wow
Amazing craftsmanship!
Beautiful job!
Gobsmacked by the master craftsmanship. And those tools are sharp and beautiful
