I do like how this movie’s become a bit of a cult classic. The production quality is still excellent
Yeh it was seen as a dud when released. Now it's a cult. I love watching it a couple of times a year.

@@wintersun398 It wasn't a dud. It was just extremely expensive to film and wasn't quite popular enough to justify it. A victim of unrealistically high studio expectations.
This is one of those movies that was relentlessly crapped on when it came out, but is remembered fondly today.
The only reason for that is becausse it was bloody expensive. But it was a great movie, and not a fail at all.
I’m sure Jack Black had a blast being the pilot here.

"can't we outrun them?" "not with my sail down" always struck me as a fantastically stupid bit of dialogue. you're on a flat featureless surface and even at top speed you'd never hide from a plane, let alone outrun it
As a pilot that has flown 206 and 208s on floats maybe he meant out stride it. Those floats reduce range a lot! Especially given the ops.

The plane has limited fuel, the sailboat does not.
I mean if it was storming it could mayby outrun the plane.
Also that boat is fastes going nearly up against the wind, the plane is slowest on that axis in storm.

The pilot is Jack Black innit? Cool scene, I always loved this film. Came out when I was a secondary school kid, production quality is great and surely very passable even by modern standards.

Sorry, but cannot get over the idea that "the smokers" kept that plane flying but couldn't do a ring and valve job on that engine?
They couldn’t. All of the technology depicted here requires a heap of maintenance, especially aviation in a marine environment. Without the ability to manufacture replacement parts, or refine lubricants, any machine will fail quickly unless it is a very simple design. Not to mention the fact that they would have lacked modern navigation so would have most likely run aground or become lost.
I always wondered where they got the fuel for their planes. 😜
