- My lovely amigos!
I'm so excited!! :D I've tried to color a black and white sketch before, but haven't quite figured out how to do it properly. I think that I'm finally getting the hang of it. Thanks for the clues, Artgerm!
Hope you enjoy the time lapse, and feel free to ask questions if you have any :)
Thanks for watching!

Guys, I have no idea why this video spiked all of a sudden, but THANK YOU for watching!!
hmm jazza or Aaron Blaise got me here :-)
my front page got me here. Saw a gorgeously 3d looking adorable chibi-like tiger, with high contrast and color.
I love this, the tiger is so cute! the way you refined the outlines and details are so good, i love your style
It was in my recommended videos xD
very nice workflow and great art! May I ask which layer mode did you used on 4:50 to adding light? I guess it's color dodge right? anyway thanks a lot :)
Conclusion - Layer setup (blending mode):
L06] Screen (bounce light) - redirected light bouncing from the surrounding
L05] Multiply (shadows)
L04] Overlay (light)
L03] Color layer (colors)
L02] Gradient Map - setting base colors
L01] Grayscale drawing with shading
Thanks! :D
Thank
Did I? hmm which layer was it - I'll edit the main comments then.
one before color layer
thanks lad!
now i got it the color layer only has the base colors and you use multiply for shadows and overlay for light to add contrast and depth thank you i cant believe no one explained so clearly before.
Thank you for making it simple!
Omg thank you, I didn't understand that too
Thanks! That was helpful!
I thought this was a pretty nice digital painting at first, but then I was blown away when you started refining the chest. The hair there, looks so fluffy and believable. Made me think twice about how to do stuff like that.
Braderick Smith That were exactly my thoughts. I've never thought about to just darken an area with a layer and then partly removing it via mask. That's probably the way how big artists do it
Fur brushes?
i know there's no narration or anything but honestly this is one of the best digital painting tutorials on the internet. SUPER easy to follow. thank you so much for this - going to go check out the rest of your channel/website now :p
Holy shit.
Bloody hell it's the real deal
Xabio Arts omgggg
Thank you so much, super glad you liked it!

this is where I'm at too... I can draw really well, but still slowly grasping digital painting, and the grayscale method recently has helped a lot.. well done!
I was struggling for ages with Photoshop, trying to add color to an image without losing detail and have the colors be over saturated or under saturated.. After a lot of experimenting I found what works best for me.
1. Make new "Hard Light" layer above the image you're trying to color. (You can rename this layer "Color Layer")
2. In this new color layer's "Blending Options" choose the "Color Overlay" style.
3. After the "Color Overlay" is checked and it's options appear on the right, to go "Blend Modes" and choose "Saturation" and make the color box a pure gray to remove all color.
4. Also under the "Blend Mode" change the "Opacity" to around 40%. I sometimes use 30% as well.
5. If you want the image you're coloring to be more dominate and your colors to be more subtle then you can change the "Hard Light" to "Overlay" or even "Soft Light"
Doing this will let you add color over an image without losing detail and you can control the blown out saturation that "Hard Light" usually causes. I added all these steps into an "Action," so when I press F6 I'll quickly have a new "Add Color" layer.
Hope this is somewhat useful for an alternate way to add color. Love your work, BTW! :)
This is one of the most beautiful grayscale to color paintings in timelapse I have ever seen!
You really made it so good even if it is so simple looking video!
Love it
Oh wow thank you so much, this made my day :D
Wow I need to use more details like you so awesome
I love when people include bounce lighting and ambient occlusion in their paintings. Plus you used tone mapping in a way I never seen anyone do! You're really good this, understanding lighting and your tools.
idk why, but the mix of music and the fact that you are drwaing something beatifull bring me to tears.
Thank for the video, and keep doing this, drwaing is love and life :)
I dont think you've realised how long ive been looking for a decent way to add colour to greyscale. Ah thank you for this precious upload.
THANK YOU. Working in grayscale is so much easier for me, but I haven't had a reliable method of adding color. You're a lifesaver.
"Refining some more!" for nearly half the video is a great representation of what a majority of the art process goes to
I learned so much just from this simple video. painting like the way you do has always left me scratching my head. Thanks
Its a gorgeous piece of art
OK. This is digital painting that appeals to me and your steps seem enough for me to transfer your process onto my working. I look forward to trying it out.
This was if not the best way of doing a greyscale painting I have ever seen. I've been wanting to try painting but I just never knew where to start. Thank you so much for this I must try it out sometime!!!
This is so stunning. And your music choice was great. I'm going to try my hand at adding color this way. I always lose something between the greyscale and color versions.
I found the music kind of sad actually :(
I'm SOOOOOO excited to try this out! I've tried color over grayscale in the past, but it never worked out for me. I NEVER could find a video that adequately showed the process behind it with a result that wasn't muddy either! Thanks for the video, I will most definitely pick your brain on this matter if I get stuck trying it out!
This has to be one of the most amazing art videos out there... It needed no commentary, or anything of the sort. The text at the bottom showed how you turned an already great sketch into a realistic, stunning masterpiece. Also, I really enjoyed the music.
Absolutely beautiful. That was a joy to watch. So much life in your work!
Oh I love this!
Not sure how I got here from unreal engine videos, but this was extremely pleasant and satisfying to watch.
Often times these blend modes are misused by amateur artists who perhaps can not paint with real media, but it always shows.
It's really great to see the benefits of these digital tools used well. Truly exemplary work, with finesse.
Adding shadows with multiply and bounce light really did it!👌
So glad you found that helpful!
Very nice artwork!
and thanks for sharing your method of coloring. It seems really helpful, I need to try!
excellent work. i feel like Aaron Blaise would appreciate this drawing. i especially like the highlights in the corners of the mouth & the bunched fur on the chest :) thank you for posting
I have been trying to learn this forever, and always had such a hard time doing it. I use Clip Studio Paint so there is a little communication error but walking through your video helped a ton. For Clip studio Paint, for any that need this, just change the blending mode to overlay when you make a new layer.
Outstanding work, beautiful painting. I just wish I could see your layers and more about the tools you used.
Some paw prints in the snow would be cute. Fantastic artwork
Omg I love your art style so much.. It's like there's a bunch of artists out there with ok, fine stuff but your style is simply amaizing, so gentle, happy, kind, you can see like.. the gracefullness and goodness in every work you do!!! Totaly sub!
This is such a wonderful piece, both finishes and seeing the step-by-step. Thank you for sharing!
I'm amazed at how much depth you added to the flat artwork at first, well done!
Excellent drawing of a cute little dog :)
I agree that it's nice!
But that's a Tiger...
lol
Mayachi It's a joke
What the fuck? This is clearly a giraffe...
Lol
wow, thanks for sharing your process and adding a short explanation in the beginning.
Really great video... I love your art and your style! Very nice and hope to see more!
This is super easy to follow! Not saying it's easy to do, it's just that your method is very doable. Thank you so much for this great guide. :)
*while watching the video*
STOP. YOU NEED TO STOP, YOURE MIND BLOWING ME WITH EVERY BRUSH STROKE BECAUSE I WASNT ABLE TO BELIEVE IT COULD GET BETTER AND YOU JUST KEPT ON PROVING ME WRONG.
You're art was so good, I literally had to pause half way and stop watching it because my heart couldn't take it anymore. I need to- *walks away* I needa catch my breath, and then come back to it in a year or something. I'm not ready for your awesomeness just yet.
I'm amazed by how well your process was explained without talking! The text was to the point and not intrusive, which I applaud you for, that's not an easy thing to do (imo). I really enjoyed the nice music as well, it felt very calming.
I'm looking forward to trying out your technique! I struggle a lot with making my artworks pop, because I'm not to good with values just yet. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos
This cured my depression, seriously, I can sense how much love you put in this drawing and I start smiling along with the tiger just by looking at it. Thank you so much!
Ahhh....another video worthy of my time.
I finally understand what to do now. Thank you!
what a gorgeous tiger! I've never done that colour overlay thing before, I'll have to find a tutorial and try it! I've always worked better in greys calendar, myself. probably from my years of graphite sketching. Always had trouble with colour. thanks for the inspiration! :)
This was very educational! Thank you for adding what you were doing at the bottom!
could you imagine an entire short film made up of thousands of frames of just super detailed paintings? like imagine spending hours and hours painting just one out of thousands of frames?
Could you please stop being amazing??!!! you're making the rest of us look bad! ;)
Thanks for sharing!!!
Aww you :D
Thanks for the compliment, glad you appreciated it! :)
I think she used the paint bucket once the lines were all connected.
or she paused the video there, but im agree with the paint bucket :))
take care with paint bucket most of softwares leave a tiny space between
Make sure the 'expansion' isn't at 0
My painting teacher always talks about seeing colour first or seeing greys first. I never understood it because I see colour first so I thought everyone was like me. This is a really interesting video!
He looks soooooo fluffy!
You did that realy well and it will be fun to try this workflow out by myself. :)
I like how you captured the tiger's expression - half being surprised, half being fascinated. In my mind I have developed this picture into a scene from an animated movie about a young tiger when he (because the tiger has a name ;)) is seeing snow flakes for the first time. The music also goes well with this scene.
Great timelapse video. Great inspiration for my next greyscale coloring :) Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!
Looks great Noukah, I doing the same thing for game design and textures, Outline, black, white, grayscale, then i pick my colours ontop of that, the shading becomes alot better than way.
I actually tried this, it helped a lot I kind of spread out the time of the piece for days than just for a few hours, but this was a great tutorial!
Just... WOW!!! I'm very impressed, the tiger looks so awesome and alive!
this is literally the most helpfull painting video and you didnt even speak. simple and efficant... i love it
Hello! I really loved this vídeo. I am working now in learning digital painting. I came from de old school, totally analogical.
Thanks for share. Beatiful work!
Thank you for providing these fantastic techniques, I have definitely learnt a lot from this.
Wow! I see a big difference this makes me want to do that with my timelapses. ^^ Thanks very much for this.
Loved your video and your art! Thank you so much for sharing.
What a beautiful tiger! This was really cool to watch, and very informative!
Awwww. Big pretty kitty. Hahaha. I liked the way you copied the head, refined it, and then put it back on the main sketch. I wouldn't have thought to do that. That's neat. :)
More wonderful video I've seen over and over again
This is so satisfying to watch come together
This is brilliant! I also get so stuck when it comes to colors and painting. I get hung up on the color, rather than the most important aspects, value. I have to try your method out!
Thank you so much for sharing!
I tried coloring from greyscale in the past, ending with an awfull result of saturated colors and didn't quite understood... But, seeing what you did made me think what i did wrong, thank you...
Just this isn't an "easy" way... its very detailed and beautifull... its an incredible art piece...
Felicidades!
thanks for you video, help so many people to learn more!! Gob job Noukah!
the best coloring video ive seen yet
Thanks for sharing your process. He's gorgeous, by the way.
I'll definitely have to try out this method I like how you can keep going back and continuing refinement.
that is really amazing. I love the outcome. Great job......
What a cute tiger aahhhhh this makes me feel so warm and happy >__
Thank you fellow artist. I enjoyed observing your technique.
Seeing an idea come to life like this is pretty amazing. Thanks for sharing! :)
This video was so peaceful and very informative. It was easy to follow even though there was no voice-over. Been trying to grow my own channel, and I think you've inspired me to try new methods of digital art. Thank you so much.
that piano just make it even better to watch :3
So beautiful, he/she looks so happy :)
Came for the art, stayed for the music, nice choice!
Great painting! And thank you for the calming music. This video made me calmer and happier.
This is truely awesome. I'm gonna subscribe and patiently wait for every video you do (after watching your other videos). The tiger looks so amazing, you have a great style and i'll try this method soon on one of my drawings (still at the beginning of my drawing career ;)) Keep up the good work :)
you showed me how to improve in 8 minutes. it's crazy and thanks, many thanks for help us.
Wow THAT WAS SENSACIONAL congratulations i love the details
Beautiful!!! I wish you'd told more about what layer types you were working on during the "refining more" stage, but this is just awesome!! Very beautiful!
This is a nice technique. I've colored a b&w painting before, but I never thought about going back into b&w to refine the image once the color is overlaid. I will definitely try this. And, by the way, the texture on the neck and chest is incredible.
Wonderful piece of art!
This was so calming to watch :)
I really need to learn how to do this. I've almost always worked in greyscale anyway - graphite, charcoal, conte, etc.
doing this would be epic for my art digitally. Yet right now, I'm just happy my sketches are starting to clean up nicely finally digitally. No more squigglies.
also, I found this via my frontpage. Congrats on going "viral" and I shared it to my pinterest and facebook too, so... :D congrats!
Really good layering techniques, you just stepped my game up.
you have no idea why the video spiked all of sudden?... this is gorgeous... cannot get enough of this beautiful style.
So incredibly soothing and beautiful... definitely earned a sub! Keep up the amazing work, please!
amazing work, love the lighting
So beautiful! So adorable! Now I'madding this to my favourites!
As soon as i saw the thumbnail i thought of Noukah from DA. Really unique and beautiful style.
It is a beautiful video, the music allows you to really appreciate your work
Nice trick with the gradient map! 👍
OMG! I just fell in love!!!
Amazing work :) Thanks for sharing.
Great use of grayscale! I always wondered how you can go from gray to color with good shading and highlights.
Wow, I want to draw like that! Amazing!
Very useful tool for painting fur! Thanks!
Thank you for this tutorial.
I am not skilled in drawing, but it was a real pleasure to see how You are creating this cute picture. What a cheerfull tiger. Looks like a really happy-living person.
And this positive will inspires me to be more and more creative on my vfx path.
Thanks, again.
P.S.
It is really interesting procedural trick: to set up the lightning on grayscale area without of depending on colors themselves. Like the lightning map is generated by the position of a lightning source, but the color of it depends on the filter installed over this lightning source. Simple, not obvious, but trully practical as a real lightning on set.
so clever and cool to watch!!
So pretty :0 I love the floof omg
