  • Something a little different this week because I felt like chatting through a new technique I'm using! I've been starting out a lot in greyscale lately and it's been a really interesting experience that I want to share and get other people's insights on~

    Tools Used
    I used a free digital art program called Medibang Paint Pro to do most of the drawing, and then exported the file to Photoshop CC to make the final colour adjustments. If you're ever on the look out for a really awesome and easy to use digital art program I really highly recommend Medibang! It features a ton of awesome brushes and supports a lot of the basic features that digital artists need u I'll have a link down below to their website!

    Photoshop CC: www.adobe.com/
    Recording software: obsproject.com/

    FAQ
    How long did this take?
    It varies! If it's a five minute long video, then between 3 to 4 hours. If its between 7-10 minutes, it was probably a bigger piece which can take anywhere between 10-15 hours.
    Where did you get that fur textured brush? tinyurl.com/yd3te4sk
    Where did you get the flat brush?
    That one's from the Medibang cloud (click the little cloud shaped button with the arrow at the bottom of box with the list of brushes). There you will find all the additional brushes made by Medibang - plenty of gems to download and test out.
    Where did you get all these brushes and textures from?
    They're from a mix of stuff! Some of them are made by other artists and you can easily find them just by typing in 'medibang brushes' or 'firealpaca brushes' into Google. Some are brushes that I made myself. Some are actually Photoshop brushes! You can import most Photoshop brushes into Medibang by downloading an ABR Viewer. Since most Photoshop brushes are in the .abr format, you can use the program to view all of them and convert them into .png files. Once you've done that just click and drag the brush image into the Medibang brush list and you'll have a new brush to play with!
    You can find most of the brushes I have just by doing a Google search. Please give this a try before asking me for specific brushes! I really don't have the time to answer all the questions I get :)

    You're my favorite artist for many reasons.
    Everything you do is unique and special, and i've had a hard time finding anything that can recreate the effects you give with your artwork.
    You're friendly, which is something you, sadly, don't see very often. You talk to your fans and don't treat us like trash.
    You're also just hands down amazing. There's a lot of talent in every video, and it obviously takes years and years and years to get where you are.
    Jax, you're truly my favorite artist and you should know that you have fans who recognize you for this.

    I’ve been trying to figure out this technique for the longest time because I’ve seen speedpaints use it, but I’ve never could make it work as I really didn’t understand how they achieved it. Even when they made videos explaining how to do it, I didn’t understand, but this has me understanding it a bit better! Thank you! This is my first video of your’s and not only is your voice very smooth and soothing to listen to, but your art is absolutely beautiful! 💕

    I personally think with the concept, greyscale would have looked better !

      A complicated description is better than a vague one. Imagine if they asked for "a cool looking bird with a nice background and some goblets or whatever."

  • @TheSylvirr

    I love the way this came out! Personally, I'm not a fan of starting in greyscale. Not because of the values or anything, but because I always feel like, unless you go BACK in later, and start adding the heavier things, reflective light, etc etc, it looks...flat.I prefer going the whole way in color, I feel I can get a better idea of how things work, and get more creative with my light sources.

  • @MaxDannon
    @MaxDannon 6 лет назад +7

    As someone who is still relatively new to digital art, I would say you explained a lot. I've always wondered how others managed to get grayscale to color in their speedpaints, but no matter how closely ice watched, I never managed to grasp it. Your video helped me tremendously, and I must say this piece is beautiful. Definitely Tarot feels!

    Awesome! I love your approach to learning techniques. I feel like there's no better way to learn than to just try stuff out. I find that I also forget how I do stuff because I like to try new things. Haha. I'm definitely going to give drawing in black and white first and overlaying or softlighting in colors after a try. It seems like a super effective and easy approach. I feel like I struggle more often than not with values when I try starting off with color. Especially with skin and how light affects it.

  • @PaulaYuanEA
    @PaulaYuanEA 6 лет назад +1

    This is very interesting! In some ways, it's like what oil painters tend to do with their paintings - do an underpainting first with the right values before going for the colours. I'm not sure, since I don't paint digitally as much, but doing a painting in greyscale first would probably help establish the right values in a drawing so that you don't have to worry so much about that when you go to colour.

    Yes a tutorial! Of course I’m late (we all know I was *totally* paying attention in school), but I’m glad I still watched it - using greyscale definitely helps me add contrast, which is something I tend to unintentionally hesitate with (anyone have any tips on breaking such habits?). It will also be much easier to focus on lighting instead of everything at once - great video Jax, very helpful!

    Oooo, a greyscale painting! I did like one or two of these a long time ago (When I was really bad at digital art lol) But the results were quite satisfying. I was actually going to be doing a greyscale painting challenge speedpaint at some point on my channel, just not sure when exactly x3 *So many challenges to choose from* I really like this one! It was interesting to see how you did all the shading, and eventually the coloring. I kept thinking to myself throughout the video "How is she able to see all those details when it's soo dark" but then I kinda told myself that my computer's brightness is just on the lowest setting, so that might be my fault. XD Awesome painting! Awesome color choices! I really wanna be as good at digital painting as you some day.

    I think I know the tarot references in your painting. 😯
    The two goblets represent the 2 of Cups, the lightning strike represents the Tower, the sword could either be the Ace of Swords or Justice, the cauldron is reminiscent of Temperance, and the sun and moon share the respective energy of their tarot card counterparts.

    To have more control on the values when you're coloring, use the tool "Gradient Map". With that tool, you can tell Photoshop what colors do you want in which value in the grayscale. It's an useful tool, Professional artists prefer coloring with that one! and your art is beautiful! I love it!
