There are just so many songs from Mastodon's latest album (Once More 'Round the Sun) that I have been wanting to play and record. I've played through a few of them on the drums while getting my chops back after a hiatus last year. But Chimes at Midnight was the song that I wanted to record after listening to the album the first time. I also got the idea to do the slow motion intro and outtro, for a fun effect.
This song is SUCH a blast to play. You can tell I got caught up in the raw energy of the song. Brann's playing is so crazy and frenetic, it was like a workout. I hope this video showcases his drum mastery, as the drums in the original mix are a bit low in the mix at times (a necessary result of having so much going on in the song with all the other instruments).
I tried to keep the drumming pretty close to Brann's playing, while also leaving room for a little improvisation. To me, that captures Brann's spirit more than sticking to a script. I've never seen him play a song exactly the same twice. And that is one of the things that makes his style so interesting.
By the end of this one, I was definitely feeling it in my hands and arms. I can't imagine the stamina and steel grip that Brann must have, playing these types of songs all night at gigs.

Not a lot of drummers play Mastodon, but it is honestly one of my all time favorite bands! Loved seeing the guys live! Anyway, that was awesome man! Great playing! You nailed it! Keep 'em coming!

This is great on every level. Great song choice, great band, great sound quality, great video quality, and great playing. Brann is my favorite drummer, and you are probably the best at drum covers I've seen on youtube.

Manly and Loving It Right on man, I'm glad to see some enthusiasm for Mastodon! IMO, they are hugely under-appreciated. This track was just so much fun to play on the drums, and Brann's drumming was just a joy to play along with. Cheers!
johnkew I'd agree. I guess they are fairly popular as far as metal bands go, but I don't think they get the recognition they deserve for how original and talented they and their albums are. They have been able to consistently make albums that not only sound different from one another, but sound different than anything other bands are putting out. That's not easy.
Putting out a heavy-as-shit album like Remission and years later putting out a "prog metal" album like Crack the Skye, and years after that putting a more straight ahead hard-rock/metal album like Once More 'Round the Sun...those things are impressive enough considering the quality of each one, but the fact that they retain their musical DNA (IMO) in each offering, where it's clearly Mastodon doing their thing and doesn't sound any other band on the planet regardless of the "subgenre" you want to characterize each album as...it's pretty fucking amazing. They should be one of the biggest bands in the world.

Meinl has been posting videos of Brann doing the drums for some of their songs recently, def worth a watch, great quality videos and he talks a little afterwards, they have one for blasteroid and precious stones and I think one more, they’re fantastic videos. Brann is one of the best in the business and he’s so creative, to top it off he sings a ton now too, one of the best musicians in the world

We're still working away at Portraits - Ben has been busy recording another album for a separate project, but when he's finished with that, we'll pick back up.
