Pretty tough to remember unique unit abilities for your opponents entire army from a single brief run through at the start. Isn’t that the point of gotchya’s being looked down upon? Because you can’t be expected to memorise every ability of every unit from every army? The alternative is stopping constantly and asking your opponent to repeat the unit ability every turn
Gotchya's are looked down upon yeah. As you say, it's very unlikely that you or your opponent will remember all of each others abilities for every unit. What a lot of people do (including myself), is agree to write some key things down in a notepad. This way you aren't always having to ask your opponent for the ability rundown every phase.
On the gotcha game 1. I'd say he did not uphold the highest ideals of courtesy and he did get a bit cheakie by not calling you on your goof when u said hey here's what I'm doing... But as you said it was more to do with playing to a high standard rather than intentional malice. A gotcha is laughing at an opponent making a "mistake" when u don't ever give them a chance to succeed. Alex merely let u make a goof without correcting you. Glad that you both enjoyed yourselves and I look forward to watching the other two games when it is not 4am
@@nightmarejlm91 it's not. But as 40k is a very complex game with lots of weird rule interactions a smooth game requires both sides to make sure the other person at least knows what they can do :).
On the first game with the "gotcha" moment with the fall back and charge. He DID explain this to you at the start, so you can call it right there that he did his due diligence. BUT at the start of the game, your looking at the board, your formulating strategies, your opponent is going over a dozen rules his army has, you NOT going to remember everything he says. Does he HAVE to remind you of his units special rule every time you interact with it? ... this point right here comes down to what sort of opponent your playing against ... a gentleman will know full well you have NOT remembered everything he briefly went over at the start and will kindly remind you ... a cheeky/non malicious player will say nothing, resting on his laurels that he has gone over his units special rules and its not up to him to constantly remind you.

Advance/fallback and charge is the stormlance detachment ability, is a pretty key rule to forget. I guess tieing up the cavalry did prevent them doing a normal move so there's that
Whenever there's some ability that might ruin a move I want to make (such as fall back and charge), I just ask my opponent in that moment "Hey do you have anything that can do this or that"
It's a gotcha by definition but an acceptable one for competitive tournaments. He did the bare minimum required for sportsmanship, so cant be too mad about that. The second one was a bit uncool since he now knows your memory is poopoo (or you were distracted, haha), but what can you do. People still wanna win.
This is a tough one. I feel like I don’t need to tell you every step of the way how I’m going to counter your strategy. I’ve done this in games or tournaments before and ended up beating myself for my opponent.
I completely agree with you. I'm usually too nice to my opponent and remind them of stuff all the time. I don't see a lot of people who thank me for it. So I guess I'll stop being so nice now. It's lost me games tbh
I bought strakken after watching the tournament reports, the first game I used him he killed 5 sanguinary guard with a Catachan blob. The catachans unfortunately did not do any wounds, but after all 20 died strakken cleared the last sanguinary guard.
Not sure about that thunderwolf moment. Feels a bit 'gotcha', but then again, it's all on the datasheets, and you if you don't face them often (or delete them before they can do their thing), those things can slip by past if they only get mentioned at the start among many other things.
The henry simmerson quote lmaoooo. "Well, sir, on first sighting the French, I naturally gave the order to advance. That's my style, sir." gold. 100% agree on the timings, especially now they force you to take different weapons in squads aka no double plasma in a 10 man. 3 hours is a requirement for 2k points. Last tourney i attended was 2 hour rounds for 2k points. I dont think I finished a single match properly.
Take 18 mortars and heavy laser cannons. 3[(2inf squads + 2 mortars) + (platoon command + 1 mortar)] + 3 mortar squads. Idk about heavy las cannon but I feel like it’s a sleeper unit.
All that drama was bc wolves cannot go thru walls which feels really bad after being move blocked in every second game. On the bright side thunderwolves can be used to moveblock ENEMY, in defensive counter attack style of SW, which is also not nice when you feel constrained in army building and gameplay..
I think what you spoke about as to how much easier and quicker games are when you both know the rules fully of each others army speaks to my argument that you should be able to get access to read other codexes so you can understand what other armies can do
Firstly, amazing video. I love these tournament recap videos. I look forward to them! Ok so my thoughts on the Spacewolf game. I think the opponent has every right to do what he did if he told you before. However, if I was him once id realised you'd forgotten I would have let you retcon your move just to be fair to my opponent. I dont want a bad feelimg moment to happen. (This however, depends on my opponent. If they are a nice person then Ill do it, if they arent then I wont) I think you were 100% in your rights though a turn or so later to not let him change the secondary because he forgot something too. Please keep making these videos. I love them. I was listening to this while attaching some brodie helmets to my krieg models to make them look WW1 types. So the video.was perfect!
Its a tournament. Telling you once is enough. Against a new player i personally would repeat some important stuff tho. But you are well experienced enough for not needing special treatment.😅

you made a video a few years ago about "playing other factions as guard" and this made me think about it and makes me want to build a tau army that fights like my old guard army did.
Hi Mordian, I’m currently painting up an army that I’d be very curious for you input or for you to even try. The idea is to go for maximum ogryn/bullgryn with Lord solar accompanied by a Cadian command blob, 3 Crassus tanks for the ogryn and 2 hades breaching drills to deep strike the bullgryn. I’ve only played with the army once but it was pretty fun!
Interestingly I agree concerning the Manticore. It's surely not bad but I keep rolling the pesky 1s into targets like vehicles, not getting blast and rerolls to hit...
Ugh that T1 gotcha is kinda frustrating. Yes he did tell you at the start with his Thunderwolf cav and his army rules but like c’mon. I would’ve at least said “hey just really quick if you shoot this unit I can move D6 toward you and get into engagement range.”. Don't expect GW employees to understand the rules, the ones your gonna meet are salesmen and they are unlikely to know the rules well enough to do anything beyond run intro games.
Take aim makes your Unit +1 BS so it's now BS3+ then if you give it +1 to hit. You effectively hit on 2+... take aim does not give you +1 to hit. Increasing your BS is not modifying the roll
Round 1 vs Wolves I think you're both right. I think one should assume a more laid back game unless it's explicitly agreed to play cutthroat. However, if it's a tournament and surprises like that aren't done literally as a surprise, change or made up. If they were mentioned pre-game, also fair game. And I believe you had the absolutely correct initial take and reaction to go "Ok, this is a competitive game, I won't play nice, either." Would be nice to have the images to match the narrative, I.e. what you are talking about is matched by the images. Struggled greatly to follow along with the randomness of the images. Aside from that great BatRep.
Have you ever looked into the death rider squadron and commander combo to do a turn one 1" screen on the enemy deployment? It's great to see them unable to leave there deployment 😅
Just had that happen to me! Some Chaos filth and wizardry. He had first turn, and the scout move nullified my scout moves; penned in across the board. Never even knew that could happen. Game - bad disaster...fun though; but, very ugly. What are you supposed to do in a situation such as that?
Personally I feel like 1 is the bare minimum to not be “that guy” but always follow rule number one and don’t be a D. So I would and have reminded an opponent often
Yo MG, not a gripe but more of an actual rules question. How were you playing the area terrain? I still haven't completely gotten to grips with 10th terrain, can the Praetor start deployed in the building/ruin like that?
Personally, I am fine with "Gotcha!" play as long as I had an opportunity to know the rule existed and that the rule is played *correctly*. But thay comes from playing a lot of card games where deception is a part of the game. And to be fair to you, I would still be frustrated in the moment (but would look back after the game as a good move by my opponent)
perfect response to this. it is part of the game. i dont see the point in telling your opponent how to beat you. let them figure it out themselves, especially someone as experienced as MD!
I think if you told your opponent in the beginning of what your Army does and you do not remember it's on you. However if your opponent reminds you of what there army does mid-battle you should also remind them of what your army does. Play the game your opponent wants to play.
I think he just got a bit unlucky with the pairing Orks and Gaurd are both more model and dice heavy armies. I played 1500 points chaos knights Vs imperial knights. The actual game once set up took around 45 minutes.
Personally I remind people they're about to make a bad move. I feel like not doing that is a bit lame. However I don't really blame people for playing it close if that's how they need to win.
On first game, with casual play that would have been a bit rude, but this was a tournament. He was open and told you everything ahead of time, I wouldn’t say he needs to tell you if you’re making a mistake. It seems like you might have misread the type of game he was going for originally, you feeling it was casual and Alex wanting a more competitive game. He probably should have let you know that you were being a bit too open, but there was an opportunity for you to realize he wasn’t reciprocating. Sometimes these things happen with mismatches on what the players want out of a game, but I’m glad to hear there’s no bad blood!
In regards to first game gotcha thing, he told you once at the beginning of the game, in my view its your fault you forgot, would feel bad in a chilled game, but in a tournament, that is what you sign up for.
If i were running a tournament i would make it a requirement for people to bring a print out of their datasheets and army rules "for the table". I think this would help both players speed up the game as you would have time in your oppents turn to read their datat sheets over. Also reducing gotcha moments and mistakes. Just my opinion man
That thing about Officers not leading there men in WW1 was not true and was talked about during the cold war Britain lost a lot of Generals on the front lines as well as other ranks
I generally agree that he shouldn't need to remind you, especially in comps. I do hate special rules in games though. Allows GW to power creep, by giving newer factions silly special rules. Everyone should be playing by the same rule set. Its fun to watch, but I'm not sure Id want to play GW, except for blood bowl.
i hate to say it, but on a ballsy move like the one you described you could have just asked "hey, what are the abilities on these guys again?" and you would have saved yourself a lot of frustration especially since you already know that you forgot some of the things your opponents army can do...So, id say that one is on you.
I think it's funny how all the pro players are always screeching about artillery and how broken it is and needs serious nerfs and Tim sits here, taken a ton of it to an RTT and is like "yeah, it's okay."
To bd fair he's not using the standard arty + Lord Solar where you stick him with them to order all 3 combined with the mortar + Creed free fields of fire that he does use here. Which is often the most complained about IG combo when it comes to Arty.
I feel like the enhancement was more of a gotcha imo the detachment rule is the principle of the army. Not something you should be forgetting but if its a more relaxed tournament I would probably remind them once after i went over my list. THAT BEING SAID alex sounds like more than a bit of a try-hard
Yah, naw man, even in a friendly game... If you're playing chess and your opponent doesn't realize you can check him next turn if he makes a certain move do you warn him? Of course not. Same same, shouldn't "forget that the queen can move diagonally" or "not remember that your knight can jump over their pieces". Ya know what I mean? If you're trying to teach someone how to play it's one thing, but if you're playing with the intention of winning at all, practice OPSEC

Id love to see yoy try to make a guard cavalry list work some day! If anyone can i bet itd be mordian
Would be nice to have the images to match the narrative, I.e. what you are talking about is matched by the images. Struggled greatly to follow along with the randomness of the images. Aside from that great BatRep.
I'd love to see the pure swarm list nids in a few games. Seems a shame for you to have painted them all without giving them an outing.
I feel like the deathcorp is the WWI list.
This list is a text book infantry division from WWII
This guard list is on meta lol
Also Great Video, good wins!
a few more situational photos for the games would've been nice. It was quite repetetive, especially game 1
I NEED TO SEE THE SWARM OF BUGS!
Cadians as Conscripts hurts my soul
Good Sir can you tell me as to where you got those troop movement trays?
I would appreciate the nid swarm episode
How would regular infantry do instead of cadians?
For that 1st game, Stormlance Detachment is a marine one, the whole army can advance/fall back and still charge, this is well known :P
I think you would win more games in tournaments if you went into them with your comp switch already on
Would love to see the nid swarm at a tournament
I think if you told your opponent in the beginning of what your Army does and you do not remember it's on you.
However if your opponent reminds you of what there army does mid-battle you should also remind them of what your army does.
Play the game your opponent wants to play.
i like this style. I am buiding 1k infanstry and artillery now. Shoot with indirect fire and match with infantry
Just a point on game timings do you think they should reduce army size to 1500pts?
I think he just got a bit unlucky with the pairing Orks and Gaurd are both more model and dice heavy armies.
I played 1500 points chaos knights Vs imperial knights. The actual game once set up took around 45 minutes.
Those red Ork dice look great! For the first game, at least, were you guys plating sideways?
I vote for Endless Swarm!
Double Dorn!!!
That's a lot of plasma
I generally agree that he shouldn't need to remind you, especially in comps. I do hate special rules in games though. Allows GW to power creep, by giving newer factions silly special rules. Everyone should be playing by the same rule set. Its fun to watch, but I'm not sure Id want to play GW, except for blood bowl.
i hate to say it, but on a ballsy move like the one you described you could have just asked "hey, what are the abilities on these guys again?" and you would have saved yourself a lot of frustration especially since you already know that you forgot some of the things your opponents army can do...So, id say that one is on you.
have you seen the game Trench Crusade?
I think it's funny how all the pro players are always screeching about artillery and how broken it is and needs serious nerfs and Tim sits here, taken a ton of it to an RTT and is like "yeah, it's okay."
To bd fair he's not using the standard arty + Lord Solar where you stick him with them to order all 3 combined with the mortar + Creed free fields of fire that he does use here. Which is often the most complained about IG combo when it comes to Arty.
No trench guns?
W list
Manticores / Wyverns - For weak loser guard players ~(︶^︶)
Basilisks / Field teams - For great cool guard playersヽ(゜▽゜ )
Deathstrike missile launchers - For amazing giga-chad guard players ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ
dang it man. your intro's may have just blown my speaker...
I think for the first game he was right why would you reveal your hand when your enemy is making a mistake but in a casual game I would say the rule
Once is enough
If he told you his rules pre game then it is not a gotcha. 100% your fault.
I feel like the enhancement was more of a gotcha imo the detachment rule is the principle of the army. Not something you should be forgetting but if its a more relaxed tournament I would probably remind them once after i went over my list.
THAT BEING SAID alex sounds like more than a bit of a try-hard
It's totally a Gotcha on game 1, but in tournament this is expected I think :/
If you used a WW1 Guard army. Why aren’t you playing Krieg?
Think you showed the wrong deployment picture for game two, but correctly narrated. 😅
Lambast me for that, I definitely meant to use the quarter deployment 😅
Np. You got it wrong on game three too 😂
@@SamFisk 😂😂 thanks for watching!
