There is a camera pointed at the bike racks under the huntington beach pier where my bike was stolen. Did not deter the thief. When I reported it to the police, they didn't even seem to care to check out the video. To this day (4 months later), I still haven't heard back about the video. I finally had to let it go...it was toxic. I kept looking at every XP 2.0 thinking it may be mine. Not cool. So I'm moving on, just now focused on how I can better protect myself. Hence this video.

Well done. I'm a big believer in those cheap motion alarms. I use 2. I permanently mount one to the bike. And another I stick under the seat with Velcro when I park.
Also get a few cheap ($3 each) disc brake locks. They are easy to defeat with a big flat screwdriver but hard to see and make theives angry when they don't see them and the bike jams when they try to ride away.
Also you should have removed the battery from your XP.
PS. Thanks for reminding me to write down the serial number of my XP 2.0.

I started with a top end folding lock from Abus. The I saw that video from LPL and bought an Abus U-lock. Then based on my personal experience with the lack of proper bike racks in my area and the lack of crossbar on my ebike (because its a step through), sometimes I can't even find a place to lock my ebike unless I had a chain lock.

Agree, there is no perfect lock. That's the bummer part. I also use a combo hex link chain lock currently. But if I am going to leave the bike for more than 5 minutes, I usually have a combination of locks just to make it frustrating for the potential thief.

I did add the alarm to my XP 2.0. I was riding two months ago on some trails. I stoped to drink some water. I noticed a sound and found myself facing a man. He only said get off of the bike. I said what? Get off now and he leaned toward me. I said ok . I don't want to get hurt but I need my meds. I reached into my bag in the rear carrier and pulled out my 3.80 hand gun that I am licensed to carry. I pulled the slid back dropping a round in the chamber. Looked up and all I saw was the bottom of a pair of sneakers. Im 60 years old. I take no chances when it comes to my safety. In the last two years things around here have become crazy. I know most people don't carry guns. To each their own.
I have now installed an Apple tracker inside the seat where it cant be seen. And it works. I see myself anytime I get near another wifi or phone. It's all you can do. Be careful out there.

I live in a city where bicycle thievery is a major career path. We have lots of "houseless camps" where there are MOUNDS of stripped bicycle parts outside of most of the tents, and everybody wears a hatchet on their belt. Just wait until they find a "fencer" for electric bikes! Bike thieves often have BIG TALL backpacks on to hide a large bolt cutter and crowbar, or heavy battery grinder tool. I have seen them notice each other and give a comradely salute! I have found it fun to just stop and silently stare at them. They don't like that and just go away. I would not video them though............................elsullo

It doesn't matter what kind of lock you put on your bike, if a thief really wants your bike, he'll take it. And yes, with a portable angle grinder, even in broad daylight, in a crowded area where no one will care. The Kryptonite program is a good solution (thanks for the info on that Random Things) , just make sure it covers the value of your expensive e-bike. But that still won't prevent a thief from stealing your precious and favorite e-bike in the first place. A big U lock with a chain will only discourage ill-equipped thugs that just want an easy target. Also, don't render your bike too appealing, leave it dirty and kinda old looking. Don't put a lot of bells and whistles on it, accessories that can even be stolen by themselves, if they can't steal the whole bike.
BTW, the nervousness shown by this guy at the beginning of the video, is not what bike thieves will look like. He took too long just to close back his backpack!

So check it out when you go to the Amazon link that you put for the crystal alarm U lock. They sell the exact same product but as a chain version.
    Which one would you get?
I guess for me because I have a folding bike I don't know where I would mount the u-lock no small pipes to mount it to. But the chain I could probably put around my seatpost. And it's probably a little bit longer and easier to attach to more things.
    But it's an interesting subject!!

I was thinking why not also cover it with a lockable bicycle cover... first it would hide what kind of a bicycle/ebike so less likely to entice the thief, 2nd that's an extra layer to go through. Since the cover most likely can be folded it would be easy to carry along until you use it to cover your bike. I mean, the thief has to cut it before he could open the cover to see what's in there! And to see there's another lock on the bike. We don't want the bike exposed so the thief could walk back and forth figuring out how to unlock it. The only possible drawback is that the thief could actually think it's an expensive bike since it was covered up! What do you guys think?

how did you ride away on battery? dont you need a key to start it up? also, nobody drops thousands on an ebike and uses a $5 bike lock. also, there is no lock that cant be cut through in a matter of seconds with a portable angle grinder. the only way to secure the bike is by the bike maker. they need to implement something. like locking the brakes that will only enable with a key start.

    • @tai.randomthings

All of this is great but another good idea would be to put an AirTag on your bike, or whatever the equivalent is on android. They make mounts you mount underneath a water bottle holder to keep it hidden and if your bike does get stolen you’ll have a way to track it down for police

    • @tai.randomthings

Good point although I have heard some feedback that police doesn't really go busting down doors. Police will ask and if the thieves are honest and admit, then you get it back. But airtag is not good enough for a warrant. Someone some reading through the discussions can share their experience.

I installed an AirTag inside the lockable battery pack that goes inside the frame of a Paselec GS9 series eMTB. A seasoned bike thief would know to look for external AirTag mounts, so I leave one of those as a decoy beneath the seat. Apple's network for location of an AirTag tracker is very extensive, as it uses other iPhones as relays to report back to Apple if one encounters an AirTag that has been flagged as missing/stolen. (There can be exceptions, based upon iPhone users disabling location services, etc.)
I like that I can track down the location of a stolen device (such as a bike), whether the Police are willing to assist in the recovery or not.
Depending upon one's iPhone "Find My" settings, the user can even be notified if the ebike's AirTag has been "left behind" (or it has left you behind when stolen). It can be helpful to know if it just left your home while you are indoors. I even have an AirTag in my wallet in case I leave the house without it.
The AirTag still needs to be able to broadcast its signal, so it must be installed in the bottom/outside portion of a Paselec GS9 battery pack; otherwise, it would be entirely surrounded by the metal frame tube.

That's the number one problem with bike theft in general... people spend $100's on a bike and buy THE CHEAPEST LOCK they can find. Don't buy the cheapest lock you can find and your bike theft issues will pretty much go away. Buy Abus, Kryptonite and a few other high-end bike locks and leave the Walmart CRAP!!! in the store. IF you buy a $1,000+ ebike and buy a $24 lock from Walmart, you DESERVE!!! to have your bike STOLEN!!! You have nobody to blame, except yourself. IF you are waiting for other people to step in, you haven't been out much. People DO NOT want to get involved. They're not going to get stabbed or shot over YOUR bike, it's not going to happen, you should reel in your expectations to a more reasonable level.
