Day 13 - Grooming services provided by Oxpeckers on tick-infested animals

- This is my video from Kruger National Park in South Africa. Today's daily update video shows the grooming service provided by the oxpeckers for all the antelope and giraffes in the national park. It is exciting and informative and showcases these birds' important role in maintaining other animals' health. In many of the videos I captured in the park, the oxpeckers can often be a nuisance to the animals, but they know the benefit, as they would not be able to remove the ticks themselves. It shows these birds on different animals, such as impalas, a giraffe, a kudu bull and a zebra.

Symbiosis. They both provide a service for the other. The birds get free food, while the antelope gets cleaned of those damn ticks. Nature rocks.

I think is called Mutualism, vrs to Parasitism, symbiosis is actually like like literally life depended.
As a matter of fact, oxpeckers like blood and sometimes do act a bit as parasites themselves.

Where there's a niche an animal or plant will fill it. These birds do a fine job on the big mammals, like cleaner wrasse and shrimps do for large fish ❤

No, they keep some excess food in their rumen, it's like the first chamber of their stomach. They regurgitate some of that food to their mouth to chew on later.
They're like chickens who has second stomach, that 'chamber' doesn't actually digest plants but it's like storage. Weird

@@H9lw Oxpeckers will open wounds and drink the blood. They will also eat the infected flesh. This actually helps the wounds to heal, so they are tiny feathered surgeons.
To the animals, having a tick in their ear is probably more dangerous (and painful) than having an oxpecker accidentally nick me while trying to help. I’d let them go at it if I didn’t have hands to do it myself lol
