Movie goof: engines were never cranked in full rotations, and the thumb is never wrapped over the crank handle (as one grips a baseball bat). With the throttle and spark advance levers properly set, the crank handle is instead placed at the 6 o'clock position and then pulled sharply upward, 1/2 turn, clockwise for most engines, with the thumb of the cranking (right) hand tucked UNDER or alongside the handle. If the engine does not fire, the handle is returned gently to the 6 o'clock for another try. The crank handle is never pushed DOWN with any force. All this prevents the wrist from being broken should there be kick-back of the engine, which often there was. The actor cranking the red car is doing it wrong; he either ignored the technical consultant on set and they did not catch it, or that car had been retrofitted with electric start as a convenience at some point in the past and he was just going through the motions of cranking. Everybody else is cranking correctly from what I saw.

Great uncle Stan wisely parked the car in the shed and drank alcohol all day and passed away leaving the car to the next gen to sell.
      That’s what happens to cars.
People want to get from A to B and they don’t care how to do it.
It’s perfectly okay to rip out the crank thing and install a crate Chevy motor.
After 10 years, the original manufacturer my not care about it at all.
And after 20 years, the car has perished away.

Leave it to the crazy Professor Fate to sabotage the other racers besides The Great Leslie.

Smart TVs take care of that now in 2020.
Scratches on DVD’s are no problem anymore. Original DVDs get upscaled to 8 million pixels. Etc...
