Yep, that was more of a burgerblob than a frankenburger.
Would have been fun to combine the best parts of each one. Or maybe combine the worst parts of each one and see if it tasted good.
I was honestly expecting THAT to be part of their conclusion. To make it fair, make it a single-blind experiment: Sam (or whomever is available) assembles and presents the best/worst burgers, unlabeled, to Mat and Santi. Granted, when they feel the Hardee's hockey puck of a bun they'll KNOW, but the effort should be made anyway.

Tbh I thought they would have categorised each burger topping, like patty, bun, veg, pickled, sauce etc. and then taking the item that reoccurs the most and combining them. Eg. Majority of burgers had steamed bun + majority had ketchup + majority had pickles etc. I also thought they would’ve gotten the best seller burgers rather than the same from everywhere

Just curious. For any of the food theory episodes including this one, is it ever considered how the more you eat, the less tasty it would be? Could be a theory on its own. For example: eat the burgers blindly and rank them, next day eat them in reverse order and see if the ranking changes.

I'm with MatPat on the bag fries from Five Guys, they're the best part! When you're done the fries from the container, then you look in the bag, and there's more!
Sadly 5Guys became over priced.
That doesn't even make sense they measure out the fries that they throw in the bag you get the same amount of fries every time nothing is free

I really love the editing on this channel. The sound effects when they eat, the explosion when they cheer their foods together, just, the pure whimsy and borderline cursed moments. So different from the other channels and yet I love it so much.

I think it would be interesting to see an episode about food ads directed at children, and what they're implying. If you took the ads of my childhood literally, the food they're advertising is like a drug - ended boredom, solved all your problems, added a few super powers, and possibly caused hallucinations too. Kind of an odd message to send to children.

Actually Matt, Five Guys does not give you extra fries. Their website states the nutrition facts of the fries including their serving size, which is the same amount of fries you get in the bag. They use smaller cups to make you think you are getting free fries, when most of the time you are actually getting less.

Your comments on culvers are correct. I worked there on fryers and i dabbled with our grill. Everything is hand pressed for burgers and made fresh. Props to yall for realizing that.

What foods provide the average person with the most dopamine, and can you combine them into a viable meal within the calorie range of a real life happy meal?

That is a facinating idea.
I think it'd be different for everyone, and it wouldn't remain the same. If you have your favourite meal every week, eventually it'll lose a little of its appeal.
@thisplatformsucks Well a fruit affects your brain differently than meat. Maybe the apple slices actually make our brains happier than the salty fries as a side, and who's to say apples are the happiest fruit on average? And perhaps fish or poultry might be better than beef, in which case the McNugget meal could provide more dopamine release, meaning they'd need a main meal that surpasses even NUGGIES. Chocolate releases dopamine, would nuts and dark chocolate make for a dessert just as dopamine producing as a milkshake?
I know taste preferences are highly subjective, but just because someone doesn't like asparagus doesn't mean asparagus isn't healthy. Maybe in a similar way, dopamine response to certain foods could be based on what the body wants/needs regardless of taste, like someone switching to salads and feeling happier and healthier or in the way a starving person will get nutrients from stuff like fish eyes

Plus if you don't like the taste of something, it doesn't matter whether it's healthy- the positive feeling you get from a taste you like is the dopamine being released. If it tastes bad to you, little to no dopamine response.

There are 3 potential ways that the toys get chosen.
1. The company want to bump sales so they're willing to pay a licencing fee. The toys are attractive to kids so something popular like a Disney movie will have a licencing fee but they will inevitably get bigger sales of kids meals.
2. The property is attractive but are kids really going to go wild for new land before time toys because it's like the 30th anniversary or something? Probably not so they only have to promote the product and they can use the property to bump their sales.
3. The property want to receive easy advertising from a 3rd party so they pay the company to put their toys in kids meals. It's a cheap alternative to have McDonald's slap "bibble bobbles bubbly boo adventure" over their happy meal boxes, on poster on their walls and potentially shown on TV than it would to buy the TV spot yourself. It's not that your product is necessarily bad but it's a new IP from a small studio like Shrek was (Shrek was literally sent out to die and came back a hero) so you might not have the money to invest like Disney do.
It's a business deal that benefits both sides either financially or economically at the end of the day. It gets toys in a kid's hand and makes them want to know more especially if your toy can be made into something cool.

I think a really cool idea you guys could do would be trying out several kids meals from different restaurants and seeing which one is the healthiest for kids

I remember seeing a Hardees commercial when I was younger that straight up said "We don't do kids meals." as a way to advertise how big their burgers were.
Now you have to do it again, and this time take the best ingredient from each burger and build the burger of your dreams! This is a recipe for a great episode!

I thought you were going to take the top tasting of each place and make a burger that way. Like a bun from McDonals, the meat from Wendy's, the pickles from Burger King, etc and end up with the ultimate drive through burger. That would have been interesting and make the individual taste testing's actually mean something.

Man, this was a great episode. Having Santi and Mat together doing the song and dance made this process pretty fun. Seeing Mat go into the sunset just makes enjoying this feel so bittersweet, like a fine mixture of sauces for a stir fry. Sweet enough to enjoy, with just enough bitterness to hold it back, but still just as delightful to consume
THANK YOU FOOD THEORY! I am a picky eater and have been told all my life that I can just "scrape off" whatever when my burger is made wrong, but you guys proved at 18:07 that tastes can linger. You can taste the pickle on Mcd's burger even though they for sure do not brine it in pickle juice. Literally sent this video to my sister for that exact reason

My sister can taste tomatoes even when they've been picked off even when the rest of the family can't. Some things can definitely be taken off with little consequence, but not a lot of things. Especially not sauces. No matter how much you try to wipe the mayo off of a bun (or shredded lettuce *good luck* doing anything about that), it's still in there. Now the bun just tastes like mayo and like paper towel if you tried to dig in hard enough to even get any out of the bun lol
When you talked about the five guys fries, I’ve actually heard that it’s calculated in the price of the fries that they dump in the bag. So even though you think you’re getting a ton of free extra fries, they charged you for that amount to begin with
How? Cause at my local five guys a small is like 2 dollars, but they gave me enough for a medium cause i had enough i could fill the small cup twice and still had like 1 or 2 stragglers leftover.
Kind of a meaningless statement, isn't it? Fast food fries are marked up hundreds of percentage from their manufacturing costs anyways. Unless Five Guys fries are actually more expensive

I agree with Mat here, i don’t like having to customize my food just for it to be good. I like the option but it shouldn’t be the default. It’s not my problem that it’s bad to begin with and I have specifically say what to do with it for it to be good. That’s too much of a hassle i’d rather go elsewhere.

I definitely think they should take this same idea and apply it to the chicken sandwiches. I think it's be fitting since they also did a chicken sandwich video over which fast food place has the best chicken sandwich.

This reminded me of Kevin's Big Mac idea from the office, where he saves an ingredient each day and at the end of the week he has a free bonus burger. I wonder what the optimal order of ingredients would be, like what would be best to be fresh and what would keep.
Watching their Hardee's experience makes me wonder if the Carl's Jr side actually is better, if they picked a bad burger to try, or if I'm just lucky.
Best thing at Hardee's is the mushroom Swiss. Second best is big hot ham n cheese

I use to work at Culver's and i will say if you want to be fair with its taste you actually need to have 2 paddy's, Culver’s pabbys actually has smaller paddys than most fast food places. There stander is normally 2 paddys

I would have liked to have seen you make a new burger using the best overall ingredient from each category and another burger using the worst. That would probably be interesting for a future video!
Eh, top should have had Culvers above the McDonalds and Burger King, but the issue is that they're aiming for a stripped down version of each company's burger menu, not the standard, and not paired with their intended menu items. Yes, you can get a single Butterburger from Culvers without fries or frozen custard... but it really is intended to be eaten with them, as part of meal items, which have always been the most ordered thing I've seen in their restaurants. There also is the difference between eating them *fresh* and however long they've sat before being reheated. Culvers is one of those burgers that is best fresh, because it literally is cooked with butter, not as much other oil like most other burger chains. The butter flavor really pairs excellently with the frozen custard, and while one could get the regular fries, the chili cheese fries only accentuates the entire package. I've never had the local restaurant they refer to because it isn't around here, but I will agree that Five Guys *without sides* does taste better if you're reheating it, but Culvers still beats it out if fresh.
I 100% agree with you! My top two are Culver’s and In-n-Out (well-done fries). That custard is magnificent!
@@jennatandy6272 I've unfortunately never had In-n-Out to comment on it, since it doesn't have any franchises in Minnesota, nor does it have any in states I have visited on a vacation or traveled through, at the time of this comment. Culvers is Wisconsin's greatest export in my opinion. :)
Lumping Culver’s in with the lower half and saying there’s a “clear difference” is a genuine crime against humanity, and I’m pretty sure saying that aloud in the Midwest would be a quick way to get yourself killed.

I grew up and spent my days up until i was 30 in Tennessee so i know first hand how great Cook-Out is. I also know how great In-n-Out is too. Those 2 are my top 2 restaurants over any other!!!
man I love how this theory went above and beyond, tasting all the buns, toppings, and condiments. Santi trying to do the Dragon Ball fuse pose with Matpat was funny. Love the humorous sound effects in this video too. Surprised that the combined burger tasted sweet which is good
