Man, first the Distractible guys threw shade at Dairy Queen’s food, now MatPat did, too. I actually really enjoy food from DQ, especially their chicken, but I think their burgers are good, too. And now thanks to crunching the numbers in this episode, I have a good reason to choose a DQ burger over other fast food burgers because theirs is apparently less unhealthy than a lot of the other chains. (The ones that beat it don’t have any locations in my area.)

    • @rosesprouts

I was gonna say, my city has a few DQs, and many of them aren’t that great, but there’s one that has GREAT burgers. the cooks in the back sound like a real set of chefs, and take the “grill” in “grill and chill” very seriously. however, i’ve definitely been to some DQs with some pretty garbo burgers. they’re usually on the worse sides of town, and are very short staffed and poorly maintained tho

After looking up my local Checkers, and comparing their rewards program to my normal go-to of Domino's (yes, I know they're different kinds of food), I feel it just reinforced my instinct that when it comes to burgers, you're better off just making it yourself. It's usually just as fast, provided you already have all the ingredients, and you have total control over how it's made and what goes in it.
For those who are curious, Rallies/Checkers' reward program is a $5 reward after spending $80. Domino's has theirs set up to give you points for each order of at least $5, so it's a little more involved, but you can get some things after just 2 orders, and progressively better stuff as you go until you get a medium pizza at 6 orders. So a $15 pizza at basic menu price with no coupon, after as little as $30 spent. Now admittedly, there's nothing stopping you from ordering $50 of pizza every time, but we're talking if you're aggressively gaming the system. Add in their coupon game routinely shaving nearly half the price off the order, and it's downright unfair.

Learn how to make smash burgers at home. Buy fresh lettuce tomato onions etc and you won’t go back. RUclips university will show you how to cook them. Easy fast and far more delicious than any fast food. Once you stop eating fast food you will realize how gross it is.

Yeah, iirc, Whataburger and Burger King burgers tend to be the biggest ones available, so the fact that they're the "unhealthiest" really isn't much of a surprise to me. xD

I feel that for Whataburger Matt should have used the Whataburger Jr, which is much closer in size to the other options. Or maybe the run the numbers accounting for the patty weight as they're all different

And I feel like Matt should have pointed out that there are 3 completely separate Whataburger chains.... Branchie's What-a-Burger, also known as the central east coast What-a-burger, which is the original Whataburger chain. The Texas Whataburger, which was established 3 months later, and another east coast Whataburger that opened a few decades later.

I never realized how much sodium is in cheese. The regular single patty burger from whataburger (so no cheese) has 1220mg sodium, adding on cheese cranks it up to the 1650mg shown here. Same deal for InNOut, no cheese is 650 add cheese takes it up to 1k

Thank you guys for all this info and for making it speedy and entertaining btw!!
Since you guys went through all this research, it would've been even more helpful if you guys added the total weight (as they come) of each burger to see which one gets you more full.
And second, their prices. For example, if you ate 2 cheese burgers from Jack in the Box, do they weigh as much as one burger from Whataburger? And would one burger from 5 Guys or Carl's Jr be cheaper than Rallys or two from Jack in the box?
So I think weight (how filling a burger is) and price (if you have to "survive" off a burger a day) would be super helpful to add on to this research.
Maybe next do an order of fries or an order of chicken nuggets. Lol. Awesome show. Thanks once again.

As a kid I used to love eating Burger King. My teen years, I more or less stopped eating them and shifted over to In-n-Out. Couldn't understand why for the longest time until recently. I had a whopper for the first time in ~20 years and the oily meat and lackluster taste didn't do it for me. Back to In-n-Out for me. Shout out to Farmer Boys too; very under appreciated burgers!

Culver's and In-n-out are my 2 favorite burger joints. Great burgers (I do wish In-n-out had red onions instead and better fries}, tasty shakes and price is decent. I never go to McD's or BK when I can get way better food.

I eat two types of burger. The relative healthy one when I more or less have to, and in&out is my go to for that.
And then the indulgent one once or twice a year when I want something that feels really substancial, that's either five guys or BK. (five guys have one of the best customization, which make it more akin to a proper restaurant than fast food. BK is the only one that will sell you a three pound plus burger without having to yank someone's arm. Again, out of fast food chains, there are specialty places that does all sort of ridiculous things.)
It is, IMO, the middle of the road burgers that are the least useful, they are not the best choice no matter what you are going for.

Hi! Data Scientist here. You need to standardize them by weight to compare “healthiness.”
But to be more accurate on what’s “healthy”, we would need to compare multiple samples(to estimate the population means) of what’s normally ordered at these fast food chains. For example, your order at McDonald’s will be different than Whataburger, so are you more likely to consume less “healthy” proportions by choosing one or another? Food for thought!
