Hi, a german here. I've never seen horsemeat for human consumption, but it's pretty common in pet food. In germany some people breed and raise horses just for them to beeing slaughterd. This way they don't get fed those drugs. Also sometimes old or unwanted hobby-horses get sold to butchers. But only, if they didn't get any of the harmful drugs.
I am also German, and you can buy horse meat in Germany for human consumption. I guess most often it's processed as sausages. It's true though that it's not something you can buy everywhere or in a general supermarket, you really have to look for it.
Geh einfach zu deinem Metzger and der Ecke und du wirst ohne Probleme Pferdefleisch zum kaufen finden. Kostet natürlich dementsprechend auch mehr als was normale Wurst im Discounter kostet.
I ate zebra meat when I went to South Africa back in 2014, and it was pretty darn close to the description that you gave. Probably one of the best meats that I've had (besides the sample of wagyu beef I had at a restaraunt).

I'm pretty sure they found cobra venom in the horse, because that's how anti-venom is made these days. They pump the horses with small amounts of cobra venom, and collect the antibodies the horses make as anti-venom.
When I tried figuring out where this saying came from, I got that how it was common practice, in the wild west, if you were caught and jailed the only thing you were fed was your horse. Also since back then horses were both expensive and needed, like cars today, the bar to actually go through and eat it was pretty high, but possible.
I’ve been watching this channel to long because at 6:34 when the old show came on, my mind instantly switched to analog horror mode, and was completely expecting a vengeful spirit of a dead kid to jump scare.
In Kazakh culture it is widely spread tradition to eat a heavily salted horse meat(Kaz be the name of it) on the day that marks the beginning of spring(March 22nd). Even though Mongolians mainly disregard the idea of eating a horse because traditionally it is our friend and spiritual saviour to Nomadic culture, we do in fact eat Horse meat sometimes. As a Mongolian I have never heard sheep eye one.
I sometimes eat horse sausage, since at our local butcher you can always grab a slice just to try, and the only difference I could tell you is in texture. It can be a bit dryer than regular sausage, but the taste is pretty much the same. Just in case anyone was wondering. Also, my fellow Dutch people who may think they have never eaten horsemeat before, guess what? Our beloved frikandel contains horsemeat :)
@MatPatGT two theory pitches: Could Violet from Charlie and the chocolate factory have chewed gum for three months straight and would it have been the most economical choice for Charlie’s family to eat cabbage every day. Please I have been worrying about this for years!
6:07 funny fact: I'm from south Sardinia and here too horse meat is pretty easy to find both in store and in restaurant, and it is considered very tasty. Personally is my favorite type of meat, maybe just pork can compete with it for me 😅
Greetings from Germany :D I have personally never eaten horse meat nor do i know someone that did. It's kinda weird for most people here to eat horse meat but you can still easily find it in petstores for barfing or as a treat for carnivore pets. I'm pretty sure you can also have it as a specialty order from a butcher. But I can only say that about a local one near my town.
I always thought that phrase made sense. Back when cities were protected by walls, attacking armies would often prevent supplies from entering, thus starving the citizens within. After the “food” animals were eaten, “work” animals such as horses were eaten.
You NEED to video on how the ocean might be a soup because: 1.Soups can have a water liquid base 2. Some soups have meat in them 3.Some soups have vegetables in them 4. Salt most soups have salt(this would be a very salty soup)
I'm from Poland, I live in Masuria and I've never heard of eating horse meat but maybe they do it in another region of the country Regarding this saying, I've always assumed that the horse is the last animal on the farm that you eat if you're starving because it's the most expensive and necessary for work
Thats cus he is wrong on that matter. Horse meat is not eaten in Poland, im assuming that he got this mistake by researching "horse meat producers" instead of "horse meat consumers" becouse some polish farms do farm horses for meat, but for export and not local consumption.
Here in Germany i would say its not as common as other meats are and restaurants rarly feature it. That said it can be bought in bigger supermakets and the like. Dont know many people who eat horse though, could vary from region to region.
6:11 I'm from Poland and I've never ate horse meat/met anyone who eats it/even heard about people eating it. I wonder where did Mat took this info from
Probably becouse he researched "horse meat producers" instead of "horse meat consumers". We don't eat horse meat and its taboo and all, but some farms do produce it for export.
9:00 - Oh, I thought back then the uproar about the horse meat was because you want to know, when you eat horse. That was well discussed in my "bubble". I never ate those lasagnas the meat was in, so I didn't care that much about this topic. It's not that common everywhere in Germany to eat horsemeat as far as I know. I ate it once, but never wanted to do so again. (I really loved horses as a child, my grandma served it to us.)
(Huh, did the Edit-Button disappear? Didn't write for quite some time...or is it my tablet..?) But thinking about it... To make the lasagna cheaper to produce, the meat would've had to be even cheaper to what they usually used and that wasn't quite the premium stuff...so it had to be some kind of... Well garbage.
Enjoyed the video. I had this thought during the episode on "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse". Could it also not relate to cowboys in that they're so hungry that they would consider eating their own livelihood, for farmers as well, or many others who depended on horses for transportation?
In Kazakhstan, horses are commonly eaten. Though, i would say cows and chickens are eaten more often, since they are cheaper than horse meat. For me, horse meat is the tastiest meat and its healthy too
When my grandparents were traveling in Belgium in the 1960s, a food vendor tried to sell them a cut of meat. When they asked what it was, he answered "I forget the word for it in English, but..." he then made the motion of using reins to drive a horse. My grandparents politely but firmly refused the offer at that point.
Rehab was supposed to be a fresh start but no matter how many starts I get, there's always the same ending. Everything falls apart, and I end up alone.
Horse is pretty tasty. While not as commonly consumed in Sweden as deer, boar, moose, or hare (not to mention beef, pork, chicken, lamb, or turkey), you can still find it at most larger grocery stores. It should traditionally be in Sweden's national sausage, the falukorv, and hamburger meat (not the meat you make hamburgers from, but the meat called "hamburger meat") is traditionally 100 % horse
It's an expression haha. It means you won't leave a topic alone and keep going back to it. You keep trying to beat the horse to get it to keep walking.

I’m here from Belgium and I don’t eat horse meat, because I like horses, but I can confirm that it’s common here, it’s apparently really delicious, and we even have horse-specialised butchers. In fact I was really surprised when I found out it wasn’t the case in the US!

Food theory idea: does chocolate actually cure period cramps? And in the video you wouldn’t have to just talk about chocolate you could talk about all kinds of foods and how they affect women when they’re on their periods and which foods actually help and which ones make the cramps worse also to make it even better, you could have Stephanie guest star in the episode. I know I’m a genius. Thank you very much.😂❤
First to like 👍 lol, never done that, this I would like to know the answer
It makes women want to murder ppl less. I call that a win
I always got the impression it was just a comfort thing. Like, it doesn't do anything physically, it just makes you feel better emotionally.
Or ice cream can cure anything except lactose intolerance.
AFAB here. I think it's more of a craving satisfaction thing, more than a "cure" for period cramps. Because when I get my period, it's usually a nice shower that relieves my pain, not a bar of chocolate.
I eat a decent amount of chocolates during my periods, too, but I don't notice any difference.

Another Fun Fact: Horse meat was only popular during communism in poland, now we don't eat it to often
Polish guy eating the Jell-O.
Well. There is a variant of the saying: "I could eat a horse, hooves and all" which pretty much is our saying one for one.
I think that the “behind the saddle” part may be referring to a meatier more muscular horse who would have more muscle and meat around the back parts
When I tried figuring out where this saying came from, I got that how it was common practice, in the wild west, if you were caught and jailed the only thing you were fed was your horse. Also since back then horses were both expensive and needed, like cars today, the bar to actually go through and eat it was pretty high, but possible.
I’m from Québec Canada and horse meat can commonly be found in many butcher shops and occasionally in fancier grocery stores.

Horse is pretty tasty. While not as commonly consumed in Sweden as deer, boar, moose, or hare (not to mention beef, pork, chicken, lamb, or turkey), you can still find it at most larger grocery stores.
