True food, as we call: rice, bean, meat etc. I also got actually scared to learn people in the US have just half an hour of lunch in a work-day, we have at least one hour (some lucky people get even two!) The midday meal has always been considered to be the most important one, so finding out that it's different for the English-speaking countries felt really strange. In fact, the very name for this meal in Polish, "obiad", (supposedly) comes from the Polish verb for overeating/eating until you're full - "objadać się". Also it should be noted, for farmers doing manual labor in the fields, staying inside, having a giant meal, and then napping through the harshest hours of daylight was a great way to avoid heatstroke. Noonwraiths from the Witcher are actually inspired by a Polish spirit who would appear in the fields in the middle of the day, essentially making them go inside and rest before heatstroke killed them.
And it helped avoid the sister in law who would inevitably stop by around noon for tea and gossip. One could get out of this by over eating and having to "nap it off"!
What do you mean was. As a farmer with a variety of lifestock as a generell rule: If its hot enough for animals to hide inside, why are we humas so dumb to not do the same? In the military I learned, that breakfast is actually really important. IF you move around a lot in the morning. Breakfast is what gives you the energy to actually do something in the morning after waking up, which is a lot in the military, with dinner being the least important, since you move the least in the evening/night, and lunch just being a way to just not tire in the other half of the day.
Finally someone talked about this. Here in egypt we eat the same kind of food (which is usually light) for breakfast and diner and have a big harty meal for lunch as we see it as the most important meal. I always felt wierd about how people eat through out the day in the west
Here in czech republic, lunch is actually the biggest meal of the day typically. People usually eat a smaller breakfest, than a big meal at about 1pm and a smaller dinner. Work does disrupt this eating habbit often, but a lot of work places give about a hour long break to people to get lunch, usually also having a kitchen where you can get a normal (by czech standards) lunch. Seems like we are ahead of the game
Turns out my mom getting on me for eating at night made sense after all, lol. I always knew that the amount of calories being taken in vs burned out was always the most important part of regulating weight, but it never occurred to me that eating at night could actually make it harder to regulate those calories. Good video!
I think it *depends* greatly on your lifestyle. A farmer/homesteader in pre-industrial times would find the breakfast -- which is *not* taken on rising, but after the first two hours of work -- is indeed very important.

Same experience here! I come from a small semi-rural town in the Philippines, we probably only filled up 50% of the movie house in our locality. But the moment MatPat's scene came up, people started cheering like crazy. They cheered for MatPat more than they cheered when they saw the bite scene. 😅
I've been skipping breakfast on weekends and immediately dived into work and made myself finish it before I get to eat. This type of fasting massively helped out with my productivity.
Oh man. I'm not subscribed to Food Theory but I just saw the FNaF movie today and literally came to this channel for the first time ever to suggest this as a theory. How fun!
I think the reason why Mat Pat speaks at himself in the third term is because when they were making the Fnaf movie they knew they needed him to cameo but were afraid he couldn't resist the temptation of spoiling the movie. So they used Rick's portal gun to find a version of Mat Pat that became a waiter instead of a RUclipsr and had him fill the role
It definitely depends on the person... I can't function without breakfast, just like my daughter, but it doesn't have to be big or heavy. My most substantial meal is midday and honestly I could get by with a snack for dinner. So overall I agree!
Me too! I get really weak my 9am if I don't eat breakfast... But then again, I'm usually up by 4am so maybe that's why? Maybe 9am is within my mid-day period because people wake up pretty early where I'm from.
Totally agree, I like breakfast (not to mention the ritual of making and drinking coffee), but I prefer a lighter lunch and heavier dinner because I tend to crash if I eat too much in the middle of the day. And that's obviously not great for work productivity (and sadly my company doesn't allow siestas). However maybe I can shift most of my calories to middle of the day by breaking them up into multiple meals. First lunch, second lunch and a snack maybe. Might try it.
Definitely! I’m personally a “I can go with only dinner and snacks” kinda person. Give me a ton of snacks or occasionally smth like toast + yogurt and dinner, and I’m good.
I like to think that, sure, a lot of these foods we think of as "breakfast foods" were just the result of not-completely-honest marketing (as is often the case in the food world), but they've consequently become a touchstone of American culture and honestly, I think it's cool.
Mister Matthew Patrick, I hope you understand how profoundly important these videos are. I have been struggling with an ED for 30 years, and your gentle educational science-based infotainment has helped me more than I can articulate. ❤
i have alot of issues sleeping, and when i heard that eating and your sleep are linked, i deep dived into alot of this kind of stuff, which is why i ALWAYS eat something when i wake up, cus it stops me from going back to bed any time during the morning or afternoon, and i wont get tired until later in the afternoon, where dinner will hold me over until i go to sleep. eating breakfast and dinner like that and sometimes lunch in the middle helps me sustain my sleeping hours and go to bed easier. so while lunch isnt exactly an important meal of the day for me, i did happen to learn about all this stuff :D

I used to wake up and have breakfast everyday as a kid. Nowadays as an adult, I skip breakfast a lot of the time and combined that with lunch and call it "brunch". My dinner times were mostly light depending on what I ate before it. Also, props for having a theory ready to go and being hinted via a cameo.
Actually just finished FNAF Movie; dropped my jaw when I saw Mat, and immediately after finishing the movie my brain goes: “Y’know what? I wanna watch some Food Theory now” 😂
FunFact: The german names are way more bound to the times. Breakfast is called "Frühstück" here, which roughly translates to "early piece (of food)", while lunch ist called "Mittagessen" (mid-day food) and dinner is known here as "Abendbrot" (evening bread), which also indicates that dinner is just a small thing like a sandwich instead of a big meal
Danish is a lot more complicated since we have to deal with Morgenmad, Middagsmad, and Aftensmad, which super roughly translate into "Morning food, Midday food, and Evening food"
When I was growing up we had Dadismad, Momismad, and Cryrselftosleep, which roughly translated to: (in order of appearance) Mom is angry about something, it's probably now your fault and therfore you'll pay, so she's either not going to make food, or you'll be too upset to eat, Dad is angry and you'll ALL pay, regardless of who's fault it is, so nobody's eating, and of course, because of the previous two, the last one is inevitable. My brother would often times sneak in with beef jerkey and caramels for us to share, which is hard to eat when you're still choking up from earlier.
Am I the only one who cant ever fall asleep if even slightly hungry? If I had to choose the biggest meal of the day, it would definetly be dinner for me. Im confused
I've always found it strange that anyone ever ate breakfast. In school, when I would tell people that I didn't eat breakfast, they would look at me with worried expressions. But I never really ate breakfast and wasn't really into eating a lot at lunch. I was only ever actually hungry at dinner time. As an adult, I usually only eat one large meal a day, because I'm just not hungry more than once in a day. My dad does the same thing. My mother, on the other hand, must eat several times a day, often with little snacks in between, or else she begins feeling unwell. Same with my sister. I'm also more awake and alert in the late evenings and night than I am in the mornings or day, so maybe my sleep cycle has more to do with it than I thought. Just goes to show you that each body really is different and there is no one-time-fits-all solution for eating.
I wish my family would understand this. They say I need to start gettin my sleep back to sleeping at night, but I’ve always felt more awake at night. They say I need to eat more, but I feel more depressed when I go open the fridge then anything.
@@abigailwright8492 Yeah, your situation is not uncommon. When I was a kid, my parents were worried because I would never to go sleep before 8. Eventually, they just realized I *couldn't* and let me stay up late. A small portion of the population is up much later and eats less often because, in early human history, there needed to be some people to keep watch at night for predators and such while others slept. Thus, night owls. Night owls having to stay on everyone else's schedule can really mess up the night owl in the long term because they're just not supposed to be up at the same time as everyone else. It's not easy being a night owl.
MatPat, there is a question that has been bugging me. What, which is usually something you can't eat, is actually edible and nutritious and if there was no food, you could live off of it. This sounds crazy but it's a crazy idea for a crazy internet nerd lol. Btw you're a fan favourite and people admire your hard work!
Fun fact! In Germany it's actually typical to have your big meal (called "Mittagessen" which literally translates to midday food) in the middle of the day and a small meal (called "Abendbrot" which translates to evening bread) in the evening. As someone who grew up with English customs where you eat your big meal in the evening, I always thought it was odd. But turns out, they were right all along!
My lack of eating in the morning has been validated and I learned that my family eating dinner at 4pm is actually healthier than the usual 6 or 7pm. I love Food Theory!
3:50 oddly enough I actually do want “ness” to be like reading the news about the children going missing and quitting his job to be a detective, because he has a theory
I honestly figured that Lunch is the most important meal. I prefer to skip breakfast unless I'm really hungry, or I wouldn't have time to eat lunch. One time I unintentionally skiped both breakfast and lunch and I was fine. That was until the next day where I skipped lunch, and I felt a little sick even though I ate breakfast. Thankfully after eating dinner I felt better.
I remember my friend told me that when she went to see the fnaf movie, the moment that waiter came out on the screen everyone started cheering. I guess he really is the new Tom cruise.
15:00 Congrats to all countries that already had lunch (the midday meal) as the biggest meal of the day (that is the case in many Mediterranean and Latin American countries)
7:25 at the catholic church that i grew up with they would serve food right after mass and we called it “coffee sunday.” i always thought this was just an incentive to get people to attend (it probably still is) but i’m also realizing that maybe it has something to do with the fact that like you said, it was historically looked down upon to have breakfast before church
I think it's also why church services are usually so early in the morning XD I had mass start at 7am once and I thought what lunatics would wake up this early to pray lol
As a person who struggles a lot with being able to eat during the day and having to eat only at night this video was very helpful so thank you so much and I'm definitely going to be trying some of the things that you said in it
I don’t usually eat breakfast on school days but I eat lunch midday during those week days but on weekends I wake up and eat later when it comes to breakfast so technically I’m following that advice subconsciously.
My film professor was confused. He thought that the FNAF movie was a Chuck E Cheese thing until someone explained the game. It was actually really funny to hear him tell the story
I think your most important meal is your first one, regardless of when you eat it. Weather it's right when you wake up, hours later. So long as you make sure to eat. "Breakfast" doesn't matter. Breaking your fast does.
Matpat clearly isn't a proper Southerner. A proper Southerner knows: The first meal you eat in a day is Breakfast, regardless of time of day. Luncheon is any light meal had at any time of day. Supper is the last meal before bed. Dinner is the biggest meal of the day regardless of time of day. Typically we have Dinner for supper, except for holidays where we have dinner in the middle of the day.
Thank you for finally making a video on this, I finally have something accessible to show people when telling them breakfast doesn't matter. As a sidenote, Kellog was truly derranged, if anyone wants a fascinating read go look him up, they barely scratched the surface here. Lets just say he's also in charge of some other odd North America specific practices that are still around today.
11:25 I concur with this. I usually eat one or 2 meals a day. Imy 1st meal is usually around 1-8pm (depends on if it's one or two meals) and my 2nd if I'm having it is around 11pm-1am. I find that if I eat breakfast around 6-9am I am hungry and eat one or even two more times, as opposed to eating midday or afternoon.

I have never played FNAF or read any books, but I have watched every Matpat video about it because his videos are so entertaining.
I like to think that, sure, a lot of these foods we think of as "breakfast foods" were just the result of not-completely-honest marketing (as is often the case in the food world), but they've consequently become a touchstone of American culture and honestly, I think it's cool.

i have alot of issues sleeping, and when i heard that eating and your sleep are linked, i deep dived into alot of this kind of stuff, which is why i ALWAYS eat something when i wake up, cus it stops me from going back to bed any time during the morning or afternoon, and i wont get tired until later in the afternoon, where dinner will hold me over until i go to sleep. eating breakfast and dinner like that and sometimes lunch in the middle helps me sustain my sleeping hours and go to bed easier. so while lunch isnt exactly an important meal of the day for me, i did happen to learn about all this stuff :D

FunFact:
The german names are way more bound to the times.
When I heard him say that in theaters, I was like "that'd be a good food theory" and here we are
Am I the only one who cant ever fall asleep if even slightly hungry?
You know we have come full circle when Matt gets to make Theories about himself on the big screen.
MatPat, there is a question that has been bugging me. What, which is usually something you can't eat, is actually edible and nutritious and if there was no food, you could live off of it. I think your most important meal is your first one, regardless of when you eat it. Weather it's right when you wake up, hours later. So long as you make sure to eat. "Breakfast" doesn't matter. Breaking your fast does.
That, and taking in nutrient-rich foods instead of ones that are calorically dense but nutritionally poor.
