I just ate a slice of cucumber afterward, on the spiciest 2 sauces, and it seemed to eliminate most of the heat. But when I did the dishes afterward, the fumes got me coughing.
FYI, the reason that ice cream is so hot is that both of the sauces @25:33 use "hot pepper extract", basically pure capsaicin. I look on both of their websites, and it is listed in the ingredients.
I didn't know "hot pepper extract" referred to pure capsaicin. I was reading the ingredients list on the back of my habanero oil bottle yesterday, as I was struggling to continue eating the food that I'd just put 3 drops too many of it on, when I saw that mentioned on the bottle and was wondering what chili it was referring to. It's definitely nice that I can essentially make anything spicy without altering the flavor but man one slip of the wrist and it's over. I usually have 3 drops for every serving of rice, which is just on the cusp of too spicy once it's done building but still pleasant, but I accidentally gave myself 6 and almost died.
Everything about this Ice Cream is true. Having done Cold Sweat and Exit Wound (Yes Freezer Burn is a way better name) I can say they do not compare to the last dab at all. Sunni Ski's has this on lock and is proud to let you know it. I do recommend them highly for not just this challenge but for all the flavors that they have.

At this point Matt should really just start a spice challenge show to challenge Sean Evan’s hegemony to show his contempt for the fact that he hasn’t been on Hot Ones yet
I mean, my grandpa who was unable to taste or smell after downing a few shots of alcohol with his nose as a bet once, he wasn't bothered by spicy food at all, even with really hot peppers he just wasn't able to feel them at all so it kinda makes sense
A way to further optimize the key lime pie would be to freeze it. That is actually how it is served in the Florida Keys according to my husband, who is from Florida. I have had it that way myself too, and surprisingly it is still easy to eat with a fork or spoon at a normal freezer temperature because of it's consistency. Looking forward to The Spicening next year!

Matpat is the kind of guy to go on hot ones and make a theory during the interview Edit: i like how this comment has more likes than the comment i posted abt an actual spice chaser Edit 2: it was: How about queso with lime? If made in a certain way it's sweet, it's definitely thick, has a lot of dairy as it's cheese, and the lime makes it acidic!
I have a friend who is ADDICTED to spice, and when they found out that they could BUY the hot ones line up for season 20, they did a mini hot ones change. THEY DIDN'T EVEN FLINCH! So, ummm, way two to survive hot ones is... get addicted to the heat. Good video, though 👌
The reason why the ice cream @25:33 is so spicy is that both of those sauces use "hot pepper extract" (I looked on both of their websites), basically just adding pure capsaicin. At least Hot Ones still draws the line by using peppers from Ed Currie of Puckerbutt, the Apollo and Pepper X, and not using sauces with exacts for the hottest sauces.
I have a feeling the reason the keylime pie worked so well, is because it uses sweetened condensed milk in the actual filling. The constanty of the condensed milk coats the tongue so much better than regular milk.
I think one Food Theory idea that could connect with a lot of people, maybe parents especially: What causes people to be picky eaters, and what are the best ways for those kinds of people to overcome that limitation to their palettes?
Some of it is definitely based in neurodivergence (causes people to be literally sick from certain textures), undetected allergies, and I imagine the rest is mostly fear of the unknown + comfort of the familiar, or at least it was for me. Anything that had an odd smell, appearance, texture, or taste immediately made me anxious about even trying it, even if I figured I might like it by one or multiple other compounds. Main things that helped were, as long as it was on my own terms, trying combination foods without knowing what was in them, like sauces with mayo or sandwiches with an unfamiliar meat, or trying it little by little and getting used to it almost as a snack like snack pickles and restaurant appetizers (takes the pressure off of 'who's going to eat this if it makes me gag).
In my neuropsychology class, we discussed that habituation (repeatedly encountering a food) is one of the best ways for picky eaters to overcome their distaste for it. Now, you don't want to give a kid a plate full of broccoli because then you may get super stressed, but having one bite once a week for 10 weeks is usually enough to get used to it and then you can start to incorporate it more into one's diet. So, that's one method
Matpat should make an episode on how chocolate or ice cream or what other foods or cravings actually help with period cramps !! Or the science behind pregnancy cravings
If I were on Hot Ones, the “antidote” I would bring would be a bottle of hot sauce. Then I would drink it all right there and then just to mess with Sean.
5:25 you can tell Stephanie is properly annoyed at Matt when she calls him “you jerk!” Also we need MatPat a Netflix show him to be on hot wings and literally any show that involves science
The editor was so angry when MatPat did the Cold Ones thing 🤣 She just wanted to slap him around like no tomorrow. I couldn't stop laughing at how angry she was 🤣🤣🤣
@@NekoOnigiri01 you come out once every like 4 months. I remember you from the clip where matpat was doing an awkward motion. Question, how often do you get embarrassed (probably not the best way to phrase it) while editing his videos
I love how these episodes show that matpat is an actual human with those little thing like sometimes changing mind mid sentence and saying something else after a little "lag". I crave more unscripted theory.
Just like last year, I am saying VANILLA. Chemically pure vanilla extract. Chemically it is very similar to capsaicin and if used to higher concentrations can replace the capsaicin connection to the receptors on your tongue. A high concentrate vanilla milkshake compared to a chocolate one should show you the difference since I wouldn't recommend just drinking extract.
I also used this nose clip hack during my pregnancy for the food aversion morning sickness!! I used these swimmer's nose clips during those months and it literally made everything edible again. Before, I couldn't even stand in the room with certain foods, let alone eat them (pork and chicken especially).
I still found it hard to believe that holding your nose would cancel the effects of the spice but today, as my sister's friend bought spicy chicken wings I decided to try it myself, I who has zero spice tolerance. And it worked PERFECTLY. I was shocked to say the least 😅
im guessing it's the classic answer. Your brain just cant receive any info about the food, not even the spiciness so those receptors aren't being activated or they simply are being ignored by the brain because it thinks we aren't eating something spicy but something dull
The same seems to hold true for highly pungent foods -- for example, authentic sweet & sour Chinese foods are so strong that, if you try to inhale while eating them, the intense flavor & odor will trigger a choke/gag reflex.
My coworker challenged me to eat 5 of the blazing hot wings from Buffalo Wild Wings. I was nervous at first because of the burning sensation, and everyone says they’re really hot! But this video gave me the confidence I needed to get though it! Now that I have methods that work (that don’t involve eating or drinking anything). Thank you Team Theorist!
The final challenge of the episode was like the equivalent of getting a bunch of overpowered weapons throughout a game just to have to use a mix of them to beat the very last boss fight.
Suggestion: can you guys do a vid on artificial sweeteners? i know you mentioned them a few times in other videos but it would be great for a full indepth explanation on the major ones and which ones are healthiest or least healthiest. a taste test, a quick chem lesson on how they work and what they do in your body, etc.
Poor matpat, I can't believe a talking cat , scratch that an ANIMATED talking cat made it on to hot ones before him . Sean Evans SERIOUSLY BRING HIM ON .
Two questions this left me with: - if you reapply the nose plug after removing it, does it dissipate again, or do your senses already know how spicy it is and so it lingers? - could you use these techniques to build up a tolerance to spice? Like, if you were to eat the last dab every day for a period of time, each time with, say, the nose plug and keylime pie, because we're just effectively tricking our brain, does our brain still process the spice to build a tolerance to it, or is it ineffective completely and would eating the last dab alone on the final day be the same as eating it alone before you even began
I love how much Steph plays the legitimately annoyed spouse. I feel like she stills looks at Mat like “really this is your job and I’m helping you why?” Meanwhile they’re killing it!
If there is ever another one of these videos, PLEASE try citrus-flavoured frozen yogurt. It literally has EVERYTHING you mentioned that would help.(it also tastes good).
Wouldn't freezing the yogurt add more of a water component to it? Maybe also try non-frozen peach or key-lime pie yogurt instead??? Bonus would be that it's easy to bring sealed yogurt cups with you on-the-go--Matt, please remember to stir the yogurt before eating to distribute the fruit evenly throughout the cup.
After having COVID in 2020, I haven’t been able to smell or taste spice at all. Most of the rest of my taste and smells came back, but three years later still no spice. All this time I haven’t been able to feel the effects of capsaicin either, (although I haven’t tried anything as intense as the sauces here) and this episode has finally validated my claims to my supportive but skeptical fiancé. Thank you!
Is anyone else surprised that they haven’t tried sour cream? I’ve used it before for ghost peppers and it completely neutralizes the heat. It also fits the dairy and acid categories. You have to keep eating it tho otherwise the heat comes back after 10-15 seconds.
Sour cream is delicious and I would like more in my diet. I eat it with basically whenever I make something spicy. It works well, never considered until you mentioned. The calories though...
@@chibi_bb9642 Maybe try a light ranch dip or salad dressing to reduce your calories, as I've seen that some have a sour cream base. @marcusdasilva645 They can only try so many items per show. I would guess that it's probably on their list to try amongst the various potato chip dips and salad dressings. I'm hoping that they try the key lime pie yogurt cups next time to see if they are as effective as actual key lime pie.
Fun fact: the taste buds that say "ouch to hot" and "ouch to cold" are usually 2 different sets of taste buds. So the cold sweat ice cream is even worse then you would think.
30 minutes of MatPat suffering for our enjoyment. Maximum dedication. Not only he is burning his mouth, he is in danger of sleeping in the couch tonight for that last sauce!
2:48 *KEYLIME PIE!!* I said it last time, hope they add it this time. - It's served cold - It is sweet - It is so thick, it coats your throat. - It's filling is made with condensed milk and limes! (Tons of casein and an acid.) AND... it helps on the on the other way out. I will leave it at that. SPOILERS BELOW [Edit:] YAY!!! They got keylime this time. Go team keylime! [Edit 2: I feel so validated right now. Yay! That's also what I been saying! look up my comment on the last spicy food ep. Day1, the viscosity is the real goat trait.]
I'd suggest Brazilian limade,,, it's usually served cold, has citrus from the lime of course and had condesnsed milk , which gives it a thick viscosity and has a fairly overpowering sweetness. Also putting vanilla extract in it might help with the sweetness. Essentially its a like the key lime pie, just liquid. ( Also the viscosity of the drink depends on how much condensed milk you use, so I'd recommend a lot of it and to keep the drink itself real cold :) )
@@ZAND4TSU I have ! My dad has roots in Brazil and the Caribbean, so he used to make it pretty often when I was smaller :) Edit: the only thing we didn't do was use vanilla extract, I just put that in the previous comment cuz I thought it might help overpower the capsaicin. 😊
What my mum told me: You have to drink a lot of water before eating spicy foods. What I heard: YA HAVE TO CHUG TEN TONS OF WATER RIGHT BEFORE YOU EAT SPICY FOOD!1!1!

YEAH; I Want to see Sean Evans sign the Waiver for BOTH The Cold Sweat Ice Cream AND the Exit Wound Ice Cream. . .

True.
WHO WANTS TO MAKE A PETITION
The reason why the ice cream @25:33 is so spicy is that both of those sauces use "hot pepper extract" (I looked on both of their websites), basically just adding pure capsaicin. At least Hot Ones still draws the line by using peppers from Ed Currie of Puckerbutt, the Apollo and Pepper X, and not using sauces with exacts for the hottest sauces.
I have a feeling the reason the keylime pie worked so well, is because it uses sweetened condensed milk in the actual filling. The constanty of the condensed milk coats the tongue so much better than regular milk.
Lemon & Lime Roulade also uses condensed milk plus cream cheese so double whammy?
Well as MatPat said, it's that and more, it just checks off almost every box 🤔

I think one Food Theory idea that could connect with a lot of people, maybe parents especially: What causes people to be picky eaters, and what are the best ways for those kinds of people to overcome that limitation to their palettes?
This is a GREAT idea
Having the money to decide what you will and won't eat is probably a factor.
@@kalibuskristof2174 "Only rich people have dietary restrictions, allergies, and food they like/dislike"

I'm so glad a comment pointed this out because that had me DYING 💀
Two questions this left me with:
- if you reapply the nose plug after removing it, does it dissipate again, or do your senses already know how spicy it is and so it lingers?
- could you use these techniques to build up a tolerance to spice? Like, if you were to eat the last dab every day for a period of time, each time with, say, the nose plug and keylime pie, because we're just effectively tricking our brain, does our brain still process the spice to build a tolerance to it, or is it ineffective completely and would eating the last dab alone on the final day be the same as eating it alone before you even began
