I have wanted to do this for over a decade but didn't have the guts. Now I just want to modify it by adding scissors on the handle, replacing the bit holder!
For years I carried the Skeletool while wilderness mountaineering, it is just about perfect. I have tightened crampon straps using it when my fingers were numb.
I was considering this but after carrying around a Freestyle for a while I realized that the length doesn't really bother me as I carry it in my front pocket next to my wallet and a shorter frame doesn't give me an advantage. Also, I've learned to use the extra length of the Skeletool as a quick pry tool which actually comes in handy often. On top of that you loose the carabiner and bottle opener. The mod would come in handy for putting in a 5th pocket of a small jacket pocket or something similar though. I always wondered why the didn't just leave the bit slot on the Freestyle!
First, I'd like to say that I am a long time fan of the channel and love the ingenuity of your work. I just have to ask though, have you seen the SOG reactor? That is basically the exact same thing your mod makes, but with a slightly smaller and thinner blade, a full sized bit holder and the geared pliers.
@@jamesf3683 Very true! I'm not a huge fan of the Sog designed bit driver, but you are right both the Reactor and the Flash are essientially the same thing.
@@hvacbudget8600 I understand that the bit holder in the arm of the SOG reactor is not the best, but it's ok for light use and the bit does fit in the bit holder between the compounding gears of the pliers. Another alternative is to bring a bit kit and an extender like the Makita Impact Black Bit-Set 10-tlg. (E-15811) that gives a really fully capable screwdriver set in a compact package. Incidentally, I saw that mod you did of a centerdrive mini. Please get Gerber to make that thing. My dream is a 120g plier based multitool with one hand opening knife, scissors and a screwdriver with two double ended bits. Maybe even the DEWALT Bit Set with 6-in-1 Flip and Switch Driver System, 4-Piece (DW2330) could find its way in. Finally, I'm also a fan of the sog powerpint/litre but I think what lets it down is that they've scaled down the tools from the full sized sog and they've ended up too fragile. I wonder if you would be able to take a few tools out and substitute fewer but beefier tools instead. Just an idea in case you get bored sometime. Thanks for taking the time to reply and keep up the good work.
Wish say same but more like "do you try bigger pockets?" but i completely understand you. Situation kinda same for me, when i buy 2 nextool to combine some tools, find what pliers pivot and other pivot are different high, and file what i want to steal actually crap. My logic say "buy mini flagship its all in one" but my delusional desires wanna do multitool Lego.
The carabiner section is probably whats stopped me buying the skeletool, although i do like the hammer attachment, which i cant find anywhere ( im in uk). So if i buy one, ill probably do what you did.
That is a great Skeletool mod! One mod that I have done is to lengthen the bit holder slot. Then take a long phillips/flat bit and cut it down to the maximum length that will fit. On the grinder remake the straight slot with a hollow grind. Now you have an extended length phillilps and flat that stores in the tool. Unfortunately I sold my Skeletool but after seeing what you did I just may get another. The fact that it was so long for a light duty tool really bothered me.
Every leatherman has a few things I don't like about it. You've removed all the things I didn't like about the skeletool. Now there is a perfect leatherman for me after these mods. Amazing. I would only carry 1 bit anyways because using the pliers with a bit in it gouges your hand. I wouldn't use the bottle opener or carabiner anyways as well. Absolute perfeciton.
Great mood my man! I love my powerlitre but i have two big issues with it and one small. I've carried it a few months now and i have some odd wiggle in the corkscrew that wasn't there when i bought it. The can opener is useless for the most part and wondered if you had any tips. Plus it's dumb to have a dedicated tool just for bottle opening. I found the wing that pops out can be used as a bottle opener. I know it's actually for removing a cork. But still no need to waste a slot for dumb bottles lol
I love the skeletool. But for the love of God, why can’t the round hole on the end that is hex driver size not hex shaped instead of round? It s the part that you cut off
Seeing the Skeletool next to the SOG gave me flashbacks to Project Farm's multitool test video, which got me into multitools in the first place. Wonder if we can all work together and ask him to do another multitool test video. His last one was from way before the current Budget Renaissance and the Post-patent Clone Wars. So much more to choose from.
Not a fan of the clip deletion, I use it quite often to hang stuff from my belt via the Skeletool. I kind of want more tool options in the primarily knife, but knife-pliers-driver combo category, I don't use much more daily.
Hi HVAC! I bit the bullet and purchased the Nextorch pioneer MT20 14 in 1 multi tool through Amazon which was much cheaper than Ali express, which I don’t understand why they sale it for a certain price and as I scrolled through the website I find the same tool for less! Can you help me understand? Which is why I’m skeptical on doing business with Ali express!! Thank you so much for sharing! You’re my go to guy. 👍🏽💯❤️
On aliexpress there are many different vendors like ebay and Amazon. I find the prices vary and on Aliexpress some vendors are willing to make less profit- sell cheaper than other vendors. I'm still trying to figure out Aliexpress myself but that's what I've gathered so far.
