- CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Brent Norman has spent his whole life near the ocean.
"I've grown up on beaches all my life and stepped on probably over 10,000 shells," Norman said.
At the end of April, he walked his usual route on Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms.

Im from California and I always wear water shoes at the beach due to concern about stepping on glass or needles. It’s not likely to happen, but this is another great reason to protect your feet on the beach.
Exactly, it's NOT likely to happen. The news intent is to keep us in fear.
What are water shoes?
@gooser__43 not an effective defense against a tainted hypodermic needle 🦢
its worse then that not only glass and needles but the beaches have become the bums litterbox, there's poo poo in that sand!
@@WN_Byers thanks
Someone tell him to stop touching it and go wash his hands.
Can’t agree more!!!

If a wound gets super worse within hours to 24hrs always get to the Dr.
Especially if you're diabetic 😢😢
That's the first thing I thought. Most likely he doesn't have medical insurance, and was willing to take a gamble.
Why mess around go to the Dr or Hospital .
Fine. But wear river shoes. I have had two toes amputated from this.
What! Wow I can do that
So sorry to hear that.
I’m so sorry
Oof. Sorry dude.
Sorry about that man
I LIVED on East Coast beaches when I was a kid and a young man in the 1950s-1970s, playing, swimming, walking, picnicking, fishing, crabbing, surfing. NEVER did anyone need to worry about contracting a FLESH EATING DISEASE. WHAT IS GOING ON ???
C19 vax wrecked everyone's immune system.
Climate change. The environment everywhere is changing. Everything is warming and strange diseases are coming up from the equator and surviving in areas that they wouldn’t normally.
@@Momofukudoodoowindu Okaaaaaayyyy...

@@fabiang7846 Not until New York's under water and all the fish come pre-boiled.
I grew up in coastal SC and didn't go to the beach as often as I would have liked to, but every time I go I wear water shoes.I only wear shoes because I don't like the feeling of sand in between my toes, but learning about this gives me a bigger reason.
Man I guess I will start , I just love the feel of water and sand
Guys, flesh eating bacteria is more common than you think. The general rule is if you have an open wound, disinfect it and bandage as soon as possible.
My Dad got that merely from a scrape on a shingle on the roof when he was cleaning moss off the roof. That was in the late 80s. A light rash started and he began to feel nauseous. I saw the rash get bigger and I decided to take him to the hospital. They diagnosed it instantly and treated him for it. He got it again several years later at a public swimming pool. However, once you get the virus, it never leaves you. They aggressively treated it with whatever they use and my Dad never got it again. He passed away at 85 in 2018 from Parkinson's.
sounds like MRSA
It’s not a virus, it’s bacteria. I’m sorry for your loss. ❤
@@Diametricallyopposed00 Thank you. The doctor told him that Necrotizing fasciitis is a virus. It remains in the body and with aggressive antibiotics can be treated, but it can't be cured. It will go dormant. It only took one little bump in the exact same spot on his leg a few years later and he got it again.
@@silkyrobinson5079 It was Necrotizing fasciitis
People don't realize you can also get Vibrio from eating uncooked oysters or seafood.
Most people are just plain stoooooopid
Very rare to catch them off oysters
Eating any seafood is risky...mercury, parasites...not worth it.
That doesn't look like a flesh eating disease. It looks like a normal skin infection. I've seen flesh eating disease, Necrotizing fasciitis. That was scary. The patient came into the ER with a few purple blotches. Then later on nearly every bit of her skin was purple. If you pressed on it, it was extremely pliable. Her blood was pooling right under the outer layer of skin. It was heartbreaking. She didn't make it. Saw a younger one come in that had survived it. She had chunks cut out of her skin all over. They had cut out the worst, I guess. At least she survived.
Really alarming and very sad for the unsuspecting people.
I didn't realize this disease was so prevalent.
I agree.
Wear sandals buddy. You are very lucky your foot wasn’t amputated! Why you would wait a week to see a doctor?? Crazy.
judgemental much????
Imagine not having penicillin today...or antibiotics...everyone would be dead.
😮 And back then they didn't know about bacteria and germs, they'd chuck such rapid d3!ths from small infections to witchcraft, gods, curses and superstitions. I
Facts.
Um no
He’s a lucky guy! I’ve seen what this type of infection and it’s a nasty one to treat. I wish the gentleman good healing! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
i work at a hospital and I was in the emergency room when a patient came in with the flesh eating disease, I freaked out because you could see raw muscle and bones.....I was then told by one of the doctors that a persons immune system has to be compromised to a level where it cannot protect itself from this bacteria which we are always in contact with... stay healthy, have a good immune system and you will be fine.
😨
Good advice. My son got this from what he thinks was an insect bite on the side of his head. He was in the hospital for a couple of weeks and almost died. They had to operate and it was so scary. He is still traumatized from what happened to him.
That is not true. Many people get flesh eating bacteria that are perfectly healthy, including children.
Just last week a man died because of sepsis, a complication from a flesh eating bacteria. The nurse said that you can even see the bone from his open wound.
Last year my dad got this in his ear., Lantana FL. The Costco hearing center saved his life. They noticed his ear was a bit swollen, he had lost his hearing aid while swimming. They refused service until his doctor took a look. He was diagnosed with flesh eating bacteria and the doctors didn’t know what would happen because it was so close to his brain. Scary!!! Antibiotics via IV, nurse at home and her got better. Thank you Jesus!
Damn! Sorry to hear this!
You should thank Costco not Jesus
Blessings
Also, if you get a cut, squeeze it and make it bleed a little bit so that any germs/bacteria that have been introduced to the cut bleed out when squeezed. Then immediately disinfect the wound, apply antibiotic gel and cover. Wash wound daily and change covering frequently and go to the ER asap if wound takes a change for the worse. Wear protective covering on your feet and always carry a good first aid kit.
Edisto Beach, South Carolina is a beach that has no sand; it's all tiny sea shells. It's a weird place, that beach, when I saw it I think our class were all wearing sneakers. I mean, it's sharp as hell, each shell, trillions of them.
Why did he wait a week to go to the ER?
Maybe cuz healthcare is so expensive in the US?
However, if he had gone to the doctor like the next day, would that not have been cheaper than an ER bill for an infection which is now a week worse than when it started?
This is an honest question. I live in the Caribbean, our healthcare is free, which also comes with downsides, but I am not complaining.
They should talk more about all the bacteria and fecal matter in the rivers and streams flowing into the Charleston Harbor, which in turn shows up all along those beautiful beaches. And all the tourists come completely unaware of this.
Better start wearing shoes. Beach Boy !
Ikr! Round round round… he got around ! And went down like a pig in da ground! 🐖 🤦🏽♂️
Computer boy!
Sailor ryan boy
Davie Boy Smith!
Nope no thanks I'll pass on that
To think that it all could've been avoided by simply wearing shoes is crazy. You can walk barefoot at your house. If you're walking around ANYWHERE outside, you need to be wearing shoes.
Uh, this dude wasn’t grounding by a volcano. He was on the beach. Have you ever stepped outside?
Last summer my brother got infected with this at the beach in Ocean City, Maryland. Long story short, within six days he had to have his leg amputated up to the knee. Me, staying far away from beaches.
I knew a man on Tybee Island, Georgia who lost both his legs to this danger 25 or so years ago. It's not a new danger, but it appears to be becoming more common.
Jesus 😨
Very alarming, I hadnt realized this disease was common, I believed it to be extremely rare.
The comments say otherwise, poor people, it's very sad.
Strange...how come, we dont have this issue in the caribbean?
I’ll be there…it’s just in a matter of time. Be patient…
You don’t have that problem because you don’t fall for the fear mongering going on in the U.S. and your water is probably cleaner.
It's because a lot of water from sewer and drainage ditches flow into the ocean and probably over fishing the wildlife probably has something to do with it too. The earth is messed up so nature becomes off balance, animal species disappearing plants, destroyed it throws everything outta wack
Too much fearmongering here in the US due to election year 🤡🤡🤡
@@Igorsov no
I don’t walk bare foot anywhere.
Fek I wear my Sox when having sex but then I’m bi sexual I have to buy it every time I want it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just another reason NOT to go to the beach or in that dirty water.
Bring back the lockdowns. 😂
Enjoy your boosters to kingdom come
Man I love the beach live here in Florida, just don't have open cuts
You can get this anywhere, the gym, a restaurant, the street, anywhere. We dont live in a sterile world.
They don't want us connecting to the earth by going barefoot.
Happens anywhere...we have bacteria on our skin which can lead to it.
My dad nearly died from flesh-eating disease, septic shock etc...clinically did die 4 times.
Lowcountry beaches are full of sharks and all other kind of unfriendly critters. Once saw an 11 foot alligator on Folly Beach ⛱️😮
Damn
Beyond lucky to be alive after going a week before seeking treatment!
Why wait a week if you were in pain?
I never knew that you could get a flesh eating bacteria from the beach I only thought of fresh water or stagnant water in pools wow learned something new
I'm surprised ' flesh eating bacteria ' hasn't destroyed everyone who visits beaches, mutated until it could drive a bus, then attacked the stage production of ' oz' then wiped out at the virus's in a kung - fu fisticuffs, and then started a drive -n-theater that shows ' Beaches ' round the clock. With all you can eat virus filled, Caramel popcorn 😂❤
Thank you for this information.
This happened to my step mom. She did have to have her right foot amputated. Bacteria is no joke.
Thousands of beach sweaters and they're blaming the fish 🤦🏼♂️
Because all beaches get sewage spills all around the world.
“Itching to get back to the sand”… Someone had fun writing the script. 😅
Some Florida beaches are like that......I went to Ft. Lauderdale beach and the smell was very raw, unlike the Carribean. Its different, there's too much stuff in the water here.....Thats not good......
Why did he wait a week to go to the doctor
Because he’s a dude and they do stupid things things like that
Am I the only one screaming STOP TOUCHIN' IT! 😅😅
Nope! I did too!
they say it going to be more common but then turn around last year and blame the cold waters for killing manatees --the cold winter !!!!
These are all effects of climate change and it's only getting worse
@@LuShanna

Manatees are beautiful creatures and fascinating ❤️
Sullivan's Island is my favorite place. Glad you are doing well!
I always wear water shoes at pools, beaches, and all open water. It’s scary out there. However, no matter what precaution’s one tries to take, it’s inevitable when it’s your time.
Not sure how shoes would help, because water can get into everything.
Does the house on the beachfront fall in the storm from the wind, or from the lack of foundation? You can’t blame this bacterial infection only on what’s found on the beach; the host allows the invasion if it is weak enough.
How would you know if you stepped on over probably 10,000 shells???
If you’re in pain, why would you wait a week to go to the hospital? He said he felt like somebody drove a nail through his foot?
if somebody drove a nail through my foot I’d be at the hospital.
Many men will not go to the doctor my husband was one of them he finally went when he became very ill and lost weight and 3 months later he finally went and 30 days later he died of cancer.

Definitely have to be aware of things that enter cuts and wounds. Like when a tick bits you, you can't squish it or it's possible it'll inject the insides of the tick inside you and may cause really bad things to happen like this guy described.
Glad that fellow will recover.
That's wild!
The ocean is becoming less salty due to the melting glaciers and climate change. This is the perfect environment for Vibrio to live in and eventually the ocean may become dangerous to go in.
The oceans are dying not from climate change because thats a lie. They are dying due to all the chemtrailing from the jets everyday and dumping toxins into our oceans.
He has a strong constitution and a lot of luck! NEVER wait to get emergency care if you go to the beach and develop any sores or infection hours after or the next day! I would wear beach shoes and consider coating your feet and ankles with tea tree oil. Obviously, wash well with soap and water once home!
I always stay 6’ away from seashells.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yet ANOTHER reason to stay away from the beach - but then of course, there are those who refuse to "get the message"
Yes, go inside, and live in fear??? Okay, you might want to try a little faith.
🤣 imagine not watching WHERE you walk stomping on a sea shell 🙄 what a goof. Please stay home cuz I like the beach and I know that I need to watch what I stomp on duh

well that's terrifying. This and the shooting last summer are a great reason to avoid IOP now. Not to mention the parking jfc
Wow. Where this crap come from??
Insect bites, wounds from needles and other things that cause puncture wounds. Surgery. While Group A strep bacteria are the most common cause of necrotizing fasciitis, you can also get it from many different types of bacteria, including bacteria that live in water.
Also, The bacterium is frequently isolated from oysters and other shellfish in warm coastal waters during the summer months. Since it is naturally found in warm marine waters, people with open wounds can be exposed to Vibrio vulnificus through direct contact with seawater.
Illegals
Sea shells and oysters have a high level of bacteria on them. This is nothing new. If you cut your foot on an oyster shell, you better take care of it quickly.
Hello. We can study the use of garlic compounds in treating people with the bacteria.

He must have some acquired immunity from his frequent beach walking. To be at home with it for a week and not losing his foot or dying is almost unheard of.
