I think that there's no enough space even at the whole universe to express how grateful we are all to hear the glorious NBS every Thursday! Greetings and Blessings from Costa Rica!

What a voice! She has all the technique to easily encompass this fabulous cantata! I saw her talking about this work, and I felt so privileged to have been alive to enjoy her artistry. 😍
Someone once said something to the effect that Handel's is earthly music that lifts the soul to Heaven, and Bach's is heavenly music that comes down to earth to touch the soul.
Unsurpassable. Pure perfection. And let’s not forget the sound crew/engineers who create some of the most appealing recordings for those of us who cannot be at the actual events. You set the bar very high!
What a magnificent performance of Cantata 51! The Netherlands Bach Society is incomparable and I think Bach himself would have been pleased to hear his music performed with grace and respect for his musical and technical demands...BRAVO to the ensemble and the brilliant singer!
Such a fantastic performance of astounding virtuosity! Obviously Keohane and the trumpeter blew me away, but also the cello and bassoon in the “Höchster“ and the downright jazzy swing of the duetting violins in the chorale!
indeed a spendid performance, but this is not a christmas concert - but the cantata for the 15th sunday after Trinitatis, usually around the middle of september.
As a Catholic, I thank God for the Reformation. Without it we may not have had a JS Bach. Cantata BWV 51 is a jewel. I wonder if Bach had a woman soprano to sing this, or a boy soprano from the Thomas school. The level of musicianship must have been stunning. Well done Netherlands Bach Society.
According to most Bach scholars, this cantata was most likely written for Christoph Nichelmann, an especially talented boy soprano who was attending the Thomasschule at that time, took lessons in Keyboard and composition from Bach's eldest son Friedemann and later went on to work as a professional musician/composer.
Who says JSB would've had less talent if he was a Catholic? You might've heard about the B minor Mass considered the crown jewel of his output. It is not at all a Protestant work. Would Michelangelo, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Da Vinci be greater artists if they were Protestants? Yes, JSB used Protestant choral material for a lot of his work but he'd do equally, if not better, with Gregorian chant.
This performance is spectacular! Maria Kohane manages to make the vocal pyrotechnics seem effortless, and she smiles throughout, projecting all of the joy in the piece. At the same time, the recit and aria are profound. Why is this not published broadly? It seems to be available only through the NBS site, and is otherwise unlisted.
Another superb cantata - BWV 84 - with Maria Keohane and many of the same NBS musicians was released more widely on RUclips recently. So it will happen. They are indeed the best of the best. Such a privilege to have access to this music. (And now it has happened - great that this truly spectacular version of BWV 51 will now be seen by a wider audience!).
From the south of silence, in a corner of time, on an island lost in the Patagonian channels, with soft snow, and in the longest night of the Southern Hemisphere, my eternal thanks to the NBS for being able to listen and contemplate this music channeled from the Divine. (thanks for the subtitles)
At Last. Ever since I discovered NBS during the pandemic I have been waiting for BWV 51 to make an appearance. I first became aware of this cantata when it was included as an add-on to one of the first CDs I bought a long time ago. I think they used it to fill up space so customers would not feel cheated because the featured performance of Magnificat did not fill up the CD. I was listening to my new CD while changing the oil on my boat engine. The Magnificat performance was great and then Emma Kirkby (who I had never hear of) totally distracted me from the task at hand with this stunning compostion. To me this cantata displays Bach's incredible gift for treating instruments in the orchestra as partners with the soloists in beautiful duets. He did that a lot with human voice and oboes. In this piece he pairs a soprano with a trumpet, a basson and a cello. Maybe there are more examples that I have not noticed yet. Thanks you NBS for your generous gift to the world with so many wonderful performances
I have that Kirkby recording and to my ears Maria is the only singer I know of who matches up to Emma Kirkby's sense of celestial joy. In fact I think I love Maria even a little bit more because her singing is just so full of personality and interest.
Beautiful singing and playing as usual, with masterful conducting of Mr. van Veldhoven. Miss him very much, great to watch him conducting again! Thank you.
What a gorgeous performance of this work this is: Maria Keohane is even able to articulate the words coming off that high C in the first aria. I adore her way of singing, she is a reliable source of delight on this wonderful channel.
I must mention how wonderful the trumpet player is as well but this incredibly virtuosic piece has been an obsession of mine since my teens. Van Veldhoven has that ability to make me think "wow at last a really well played and sung version of this masterpiece" very often as I view this channel. To me he has all the great qualities of the Harnoncourt, Gardiner and Suzuki cantata sets but with even better singing and playing. His St Matthew Passion on here is my favorite ever recording of that masterpiece.
Once again NBS brings us the music of JS Bach in full perfection. To Van Veldhoven, the Ensemble and Maria Keohane (beautiful voice), my compliments for this rendering of BWV 51 and greetings from Lisbon.
Ganz excellent!
My God, that lead singer is glorious. I haven’t heard sing in quite awhile. Now, here she is. I can’t get enough of her singing. This must be Maria Keohane. Please engage her as often as possible.
A very harmonious work. In fact, Bach was undoubtedly the great master of counterpoint. Thank you for this interpretation. Congratulations to the Netherlands Bach Society.
Thank you for this fantastic performance, bach could transform human to anther level if people on earth could understand his feeling hidden behind his works Imagine here is pretty soprano with powerfull voice but tompet comes in Violin comes in, they play their note different from each other what really especially written for them but all in all are in great and greater harmony therefor the whole piece becomes a masterpiece like an airplane take off and finally lands and all part of engine works in harmony to make it possible like surgery and like many human masterpieces but unfortunately we humans haven't learned to live together like this . If we had learned there would be a global democracy
You may re-upload this marvellous jewel as often as you can, it will stay a diamond with flawless and joyous performances all round - love you and miss you so much. Heartfelt thanks. Kiki Vol-au-Vent ❤🎶
My dear Lord, how beautiful is this music. Who made this? You my Lord? I love this soprano, she can even smile a little. That is enjoying between man and the sepreme (God).
Beeindruckend!

Great performance and wonderfull singing! I couldn't help but notice that Lucia Swarts is using a classical bow and also heard it affecting the articulation. Nobody needs a historical performance praktice police but I'm curious why she chose to go with that one instead of a baroque bow.
Thanks for your compliments! Actually, Lucia uses an original, old English bow in this performance. The bow is made of meadwood, which is very lightweight. This makes the bow look thick, but it's definitely not a classic bow.
Astonishingly beautiful interpretation.
I think that there's no enough space even at the whole universe to express how grateful we are all to hear the glorious NBS every Thursday! Greetings and Blessings from Costa Rica!

The most compelling rendition of this cantata which I've ever heard. A world performance benchmark
All glory to God! If music is this gorgeous here in a fallen world, just think of how gorgeous it will be in eternity with God!

Surreal to hear a Christmas concert on the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. An absolute delight.

Bach's wife was a professional singer( as he lived in Leipzig).

With a violin, a cembalo or a voice Bach builts always a rigorous and high melodic construction which reachs the hightest heaven levels

Wow, was für eine tolle Stimme. Respekt.
Ancora grazie

she seems ageless, I realise the oldest record of hers I own is from 2001! the Art of the Baroque Trumpet on Naxos which is a wonderful series

Oh Maria, what a celestial voice you have...wonderful musicians and conductor!
Hearing this splendid interpretation by Maria Keohane and the NBS, I wish it was Trinity several times a year.
Bach said it was for any occasion. My own opinion is that he composed it for Anna Magdalena to sing!

Incredible performance. Thanks to all participating musicians for creating such a high standard of Bach's music.
Omg !
The trumpeter is the best of the world... And he has no score...can you imagine
What a voice !
and the way she has a little smile to herself every time she perfectly nails a high note! I adore her

Never knew Bach wrote a high C for vocals. Is this this the highest written vocal note by Bach?
We think it's indeed one of his highest notes for soprano
Any chance that All of Bach will ever be on Spotify/Apple Music? 😃
