- J. S. Bach. Cantata "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen" BWV 51. European Union Baroque Orchestra, Lars Ulrik Mortensen (director & harpsichord), Maria Keohane (soprano), Sebastian Philpott (trumpet), Huw Daniel (concertmaster). Live recording: November 2011, Luxembourg. Sound engineer - Carl Schuurbiers, editing - Anette Fleming, video director - Stefan Zednik. From DVD "Joy and Sorrow Unmasked", Estonian Record Productions 2012, executive producers - Paul James, Peeter Vähi.
J. S Bach is by far the grandest most noble composer in human history.
If you go to the hotel across the court from St. Thomas in Leipzig, your room will feature a mural of the score of the opening of this cantata.
Vielen Dank!
Then it should be sung not as a 19th C. opera with vibrato that borders on a trill.
Maria Keohane is absolute treasure. Got a crush on her and her music back in 2004. Still as beautiful as ever. What a voice and technique. This is the best I’ve heard Cantata 51 performed.
The version of this cantata that MK did with the Netherlands Bach Society can be seen on their AllofBach website. Even closer to absolute perfection, if that is possible. (June 20th 2024 - this version is now available on RUclips).
Many thanks!
Agree!
vibrato is waaaay too heavy. Operatic, romantic interpretation.
God was having a good day when he created Maria Keohane. Wow. Why have I lived so long without her?
Imagine how longer I have waited, much more than you!
I just discovered her!
In love with María Keohane voice😍
She’s the most expressive soprano for Bach, in my opinion. Who can rival her!? And she’s personifies the lyrics so we’ll with her facial expressions. She brings the Master to life.
Wow, she's just surpassed Marjanne Kveksilber singing Cantata 51 with Concentus Musicus Wien from 1974, an awesome achievement.
And a word of true admiration for the trumpet player Sebastian...
@@micaelabonetti949 I’ve just discovered her too and I’m in heaven!!❤
I know it's an old recording, but I have to agree with the praise for Maria Keohane from Smedjebacken, Sweden! This aria is like Der Hölle Rache: it separates the chaff from the wheat and is perfect for comparing sopranos. And Keohane really nails it! She handles the breathing problems of the allegro perfectly, and the high C in the closing "Alleluja" movement comes effortlessly, without any trace of shrillness. She sings unlike any other soprano I've heard; her voice is so natural and relaxed despite the difficulties. In my opinion, she is one of the major Bach interpreters. The trumpeter is awesome too, by the way!
The long trumpet is amazing.
Perhaps it made the soprano enthusiastic!
Trumpet performance is very good!
Bach is alive again! Keohane delivers the melismas with such playfulness and vivacity. Who can rival her!?
Yes, it is that joyful sense of playfulness and delight that catapults her to the top in my estimation. The text invites us to join a song of praise that unites us with the angels and all things in heaven. These angels who daily behold the Shekinah-the glory of the face of God--what radiance must their countenance express? “Ewige Freude wird ueber ihrem Haupte sein.” How must the angels sing in heaven? Well it certainly must be without any sense of effort or any ponderous sense of gravity. This eliminates 99.9% of all other sopranos climbing this mountain- those whose pompous mien obscures the play of the cherubs, who are peeking out from Bach’s music. We catch a glimpse of them in Ms. Keohane’s face-in fact her whole being.
Maria Kehoane is so perfect in technique, so sweet, and explain with such a good presence the music, that the result is just incredible, the most beautiful I have ever seen and listened!
Thanks!
And the fun she is having is infectious! 😊
I just wish that trumpet didn't have those holes!
@@allwinds3786 why?
@@mijola2476 they are a modern attempt to perfect intonation.
They never had them during the baroque period, in fact if you had shown up with one of these modern trumpets with holes the trumpet guild would have broken your front teeth out.
She sings this quite naturally and with ease
Brillant!
My introduction to Maria Keohane. What a beautifully clear and precise voice!
After all the justified praise heaped on the soprano and the trumpeter, I feel that credit must also be given to Mortensen -- both for his direction and for the tasteful ornamentation on the harpsichord -- and to the rest of the orchestra. I remember hearing the same tempi in other performances and thinking they're too fast, but Mortensen and the rest actually make them work superbly :)
I have searched for years for a soprano with a truly lovely voice to conquer this impossible cantata. I have heard at least 20 different recordings. Either they could master its complications but lacked beauty of voice, or they had lovely voices but could not meet its ridiculous challenges. Then, after literally 20 plus years I heard this woman with the voice of an angel singing the soprano part in Bach cantata 141 (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme) another of my favorites. So I came to this. She has the most magnificent voice I have ever heard within this realm of music. She is magnificent, and to top it off, she is beautiful. I couldn't believe that she smiled as she sang this. She seemed absolutely serene. Oh, to be there!
Thousand thanks!
@@erpmusic It in no way diminishes the loveliness of Keohane's performance to recommend the Elizabeth Schwartzkopf version on vinyl.
on RUclips as well (twice)!
At this level, comparisons are cheesy, but don't forget Teresa Stich-Randall.
@@paulblaney7081 I actually own the Stich-Randall recording. I have for years, and she was my go-to for this recording. I always thought she did the best job with the challenges and she has a lovely voice. I just think that (and it is of course a matter of taste) Keohane's voice is - to my ear, lovelier. But forgetting the great Stich-Randall is out of the question.
She’s an angel. Her beauty is perfectly matched by her amazing voice.
So perfectly expressed. Every note balanced and beautifully sung. Such an amazing artist to listen and watch!
A lot of thanks to the audience who refrain from coughing during the performance. A respectful audience, my respects.
I actually repressed my coughing 8 years later and thousands of miles away! Beautiful and peaceful to enjoy forever.
Wow! This is the best performance of BWV 51 I have seen or heard. The trumpeter is brilliantly fluent, supported by all the other players and Maria Keohane! What a singer! Angelic, happy, technically superb making light of the challenges and smiling.
Million thanks!
Agreed. Sebastian Philpott - wonderful trumpeter
There is little to add to the many positive opinions expressed by others concerning Maria Keohane's voice and musicality, She stands out clearly from all the others that I have heard in all ways. What a treasure!
An Angels voice and lovely tons from the trumpet
I am overawed by Sebastian Philpott"s trumpet playing!
Sie hat eine wunderschöne Stimme
Vielen Dank!
Brilliant nature trumpet with uberbaslöchern (owerblowholes with no ventiles). Sopraano solo recital was magnificient. Thanks for both exellent performers and the high trimmed EU barockorhestra.
Not a natural trumpet. Inauthentic vented trumpet.
*ALLES PERFEKT, AUSGLEICH, FRACE, INTERPRETATION ZUM EIGENEN STIL J.S.BACH VIELEN DANK, und dicke Küsse an die Sopranistin!!!!!*
💝
Wonderful voice Maria Keohane! ❤ She has this incredible inner and outer beauty…!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️
Great trumpeting! 8D
There is no finer performance of this amazing cantata. Maria Keohone and Sebastian Philpott were born to do Justice to this fabulous cantata. I can listen to it every day and never tire of their technique and musicality. Zehr gute!!❤️
Beautiful, impeccable, charming. What a delight.
What a terrific performance by everyone!
Ms Keohane is terrific, such an ease of singing the most difficult passages is seldom heard.
BWV51 is one of my most favorite Bach cantatas. I know several, but this one can compete with any performance. Great soprano and trumpet player
When you here that sound and see them smiling having fun, you know they are the tops, the best.
Merci Maria
Heard many but got blown away with this remarkable performance. What a perfect tempo, phrasing and ease in this technically stunningly challenging cantata ... Bravo !!!
I agree It is just beautifully sung.
Blurred video resolution, BUT Maria Keohane’s singing is out of this world.
Probably, no definitely, the best I ever heard in this ultra high quality. cantata by Bach.
Maria Keohane - Sweden's equal to Emma Kirkby? She's brilliant. Listen to her other contributions with the Netherlands Bach Society.
Thanks!
She's Ireland's, too!
Dearest Brian She is brilliant! But why compare her to anybody else? She's a Keohane phenomena! Glory be to God!
Boring old Emma couldn't touch her
María Impresionante!!
Tears of joy to hear this beautiful rendition! Soli Deo gloria! So grateful that this work of J. S. Bach is preserved and enjoyed in this way.
Full of joy, refinement and vitality! God bless you, all!
Thanks!
Beautiful performance! Maria's voice is lovely.
I am utterly in love with this amazing woman. She is so beautiful. Look at the way the music passes through her. She loves this so much and it shows. Such a charming stage presence coupled with that amazing voice. I found her through the Ricercar Consort recording of the Magnificat (listen to it - it's on here and it's so damn good) and to me she has all those qualities that make someone a great singer of this music. The opening and closing movements are matched only by Dame Emma Kirkby (although I think the way Emma gives a lift to her last high C in the Gardiner recording is unmatched so far in my collection of performances of this amazing little work). What singers Bach must have had to have written such cruelly difficult music for them!
Ich es immer wieder hören. Einfach ein Genuß.
Truly brilliant. Overwhelmingly beautiful,
Awesome. Best performance on RUclips for sure.
Amazing grace! A true blessing for the soul!
Maria Keohane has a beautiful voice, she seems to share her feelings with the audience. One of my favourite Bach cantatas. Brilliant.
Congratulations to the audience which remained silent until the end of this lovely cantata.
As a music student, a lifetime ago I became familiar with Bach's sacred music but it is until recently and upon hearing Ms. Keohane that I can't stop listening to this magical music. Maria Keohane is just wonderful as well as the rest of the musicians.
Anche a me sta succedendo la stessa cosa
I've always loved the watershed 1974 Leonhardt recording with Marjanne Kweksilber. This recording clearly builds on that legacy, and surpasses it ! The singing is transcendent, and the continuo accompaniment is wonderfully creative. BRAVO ! I hope this group records all the cantatas (at least the solo ones . . .)
Aah, another who knows that iconic recording with Marjanne K and Don Smithers! I really never thought it would be challenged, but I'm quickly falling for this jewell. Well done, Maria and Sebastian, you've created something quite new here to match the best
Thanks! We agree...
This was my favorite cantata when I was in my teens, and it still thrills me. This is a wonderful performance.
Wow-wee! How effortless and relaxed! It made me smile. If this is what music on earth can do to our souls, imagine the sounds of heaven!
Ms. Maria Keohane was one of my personal best discoveries in 2018. Thank God, I got the DVD!
weltklasse, trompete wie sopran!
Just amazing!!!
The trumpet player is wonderful, especially at the speed this is taken at. Its too fast for my taste, but he is superb. That trumpet is hard to control at that pace. The soprano...is superb as well. I prefer her to Kathleen Battle and others i have heard.
Thanks!
This tempo definitely too fast for the elderly and the infirmed.
Bravo Ms.Keohane. You are the master of the voice. It is your instrument obedient. Thank you.
andres sanchez casado
Neither the trumpet nor the woman have valves. That is amazing.
Lots of people can sing, and the trumpet has cheater vent holes, lol. Even so, it's still ridiculously impressive.
@@smnewstead4093 I didn't know. It is beautiful.
Sung wonderfully by Maria Keohane and also played splendedly by Sebastian Philpott - really a jubilee.... thank you!
Hervorragend! Alles vorzügliche Musiker, Sopranistin und Trompeter Weltklasse.
Blurred picture, but what a brilliant release of this magnificent solo cantata. Keohane’s soprano is world class.
I would appreciate more Bach cantatas from this Danish conducter. Well done!
I haven’t heard a performance this good since the Gardiner recording with a Emma Kirkby from back in the 80s!
Julianne Baird and the American Bach Soloists does it beautifully, too. Julianne's recording with Rifkin isn't as good.
@@notsodivinemsm8936 Agreed. I heard her with Rifkin when he was doing the B Minor mass one to a part. It was certainly interesting. I do give Rifkin credit for getting me into baroque music in general even though my tastes became more interested in the European ensembles (AAM, EBS, LAF etc.)
*Superb* tempo and performance!
I. Aria: "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen" 0:15
II. Recitative: "Wir beten zu dem Tempel an" 4:05
III. Aria: "Höchster, mache deine Güte" 6:15
IV. Chorale: "Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren" 10:54

Oh what grace, timing and depth of vocal fields
A brilliant soprano 😍
So beautiful 😍🎻🎶🎹
Lars Ulrich Mortensen one of my inspiring heroes from youth.
Bach would be proud!
Sublime,maravillosa versión,Bach=Gott
Bravissimi🎉
Bela performance! Muita presença! Formidável!
i have the weird habit to go under bach cantatas videos and comment that the arioso is beautiful.
That is one serious baroque bow on the lead violin. The cellist also gets a superb sound out of her instrument. Crisp and articulate.
I loved the cello to
Fun to listen and watch!!! Thank you ❤
Impressive. Maria Keohane.
Maria...fantasticus !!!!!
Her wonderful and beautiful singing voice is out of this world, and unrivaled, indescribable, and off the charts
Of course
This performance's splendor of words can not arrive
Maria canta con la mirada. Y los músicos se lo pasan pipa. Excelente interpretación.
excelente
so beautifull..
Absolutely splendid
Really a wonderful voice.Very much like Emma Kirby.Really enjoyed this!
Juju my kitty meows big time listening to this Cantata and tells me in his kitty-speak that he loves the soprano's voice more than a cup of his Kibbles or play time with his kitty pal "Big Fellah"...in a word, he is in "purr" heaven listening to this soprano.

Não me canso de assistir!
Juju my pet cat loves this soprano's voice as much as he loves his Temptation treats!
