Well, he also releases the ones he live catches. They breed like crazy so why let ANY go? Each female you release is 5000 rodents you will need to kill later.
Until you get one caught in the trap by something other than its neck, and run through your house screeching, and you have to beat it to death with a hammer!

The rod bucket featured on this channel, why not make a wider diameter one with a longer rod? Put the peanut butter in the middle then the rats have to walk along the rod, then fall in
silvereagle90000 Or have a smooth rod coming down from the lid to hold the bait. Some experimentation might be required to get the distance out from the end right, but should provide a nice reason for the buggers to walk right to the end of the plank.
How about not putting the bait on the board, but hanging it from the lid on a little piece of rope, on the side opposite of the entrance. Something very fragrant. That way, you don't even have to reset bait very often. They'd go to reach the hanging morsel, and go off the deep end, instead of licking up peanut butter at the base of the board.
With all the extra work he’s putting into this, he could rig another little plank width sheet of plastic attached to the underside of the trash can lid, pointing straight down, and almost touching the the end of the plank, and put the bait on that.
With the instructions that came with the trap, they suggest gluing a dog brisket to the bottom of the end of the ramp. Sounded good, but I didn't want to glue it, so I drilled a few holes in the end and used zip ties to zip tie the dog treat to the end of the board.
This would be perfect for neighborhoods in Chicago where we have a big rat problem. No poison. Looks like it would not attract feral cats or stray dogs. Going to suggest this to some of my friends who are constantly complaining about rats near their houses.
I'm surprised there aren't larger "commercial" versions of traps like this set up already in heavily populated areas... Instead the rats just take over, and poison gets spread. Not a fan of poison.
The City of chicago Department of Rat Control , is subject to a lot of political pressures from groups that are pro animal rights . A trap like this would subject to a lot of publicity and political heat from people who would feel sorry for the rats. This political pressure would be particularly intense if the trap was successful which I believe it would be. This is a solution best done on an informal and private level by individuals who keep out of the limelight. Unfortunate it has to be that way but that's life. As I said, I am going to pass this idea around.

What do you mean bait it with a shekel? How dare you, I got to be rid of roof rats, are they smart like Norway rats? In attic think just rats never caught squirrel in rat trap yet. If works I’m buying. Thanks!
I was rewatching this video and i thought: Would a stick with bait at the tip on the other side provide a longer lasting bait because when the rat falls in it sweeps the peanut butter away with it. A bait at the end of the stick attached to the other side would also make the rat reach forward.
I bought two of the smaller mouse version of these dunk traps. Unfortunately, I could not catch a single mouse after trying for three months outdoors. I tried peanut butter, sunflower seeds, Palo Verde seeds, and mesquite seeds. Maybe the Tucson, Arizona mice do not like to walking up towards buckets. Oh well, it was worth a try.
Great idea! Question: Let's say your setting this system up for an extended run; I'm going to use RV antifreeze; we're not talking about smell, etc. Bait. How would you suggest presenting bait so there is something to see/smell for let's say two weeks? No bait=no action!
Hey there Shawn, I got this trap then put a longer 10" plank on it. Now it can catch heavy rats to light mice they just go as far as their weight will hold. I also put peanut butter in an old tea infuser and hang it from the lid of the 55 gallon drum right above the end plank. So far they haven't even got a lick of the bait. I just need to find some other longer lasting attractant for when I'm gone for several months at a time. In a week I got 3 rats, and 5 mice.
Would it be a good idea to super glue bate to the end of the plant so it doesn’t fall into the water? What els could someone do to make sure all the bait doesn’t go to waste?

I'm sure you've heard this before but if you want to make the drowning a faster and a bit more humane you can add soap to the water to break the surface tension making it much harder for them to swim or float and they'll still be edible to scavengers
Hi Shawn. Seems a perfect trap in terms of getting lots of rats. Would there be anything you could add to the water to stop them suffering? Just wondering how long the poor things swim about for. Although adding anything would make them smell it and avoid I suppose. Would you say that the snap traps are more humane even though they look violent? Any case really like your videos thanks.
Shawn, this is an old video - I don’t know if you check for messages, but I have a question for you. We don’t have a rodent infestation, but are visited by the occasional rat or mouse. I like this type of trap for rats, especially with your modifications (have already had success with the Hoont mouse version for mice, open bucket). We have bird feeders out (the food is stored in the house) year round, and pretty sure this does attract some vermin. But have also been heartbroken in the past when I have killed several songbirds using various traps outside. I thought that the Hoont trap with water would be good as birds could fly out if they go dunked. Sadly....there is a Goldfinch-floater in my bucket😢 this morning. We don’t have a barn or shed or other enclosed outdoor place to set up a trap that would isolate this trap from birds, so was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to modify this trap so the birds wouldn’t be interested in it, but the rats and mice would still go inside.
Of course rats are getting cautious: at 6:10, before letting the rat go, you're basically telling him your entire plan about how you're going to catch his friends
That doorway in the trashcan reminded me of Frodo and Sam when they entered the Volcano to throw the ring. Totally had that scene music running through my head while I saw that ^^

Does it help to put some PB on the bottom of the end of the ramp too in case mice clean the top off?
Love your videos
The Ebay guy stole the design from Matthias Wandel (Woodgears here on YT), and now calling others knock-offs, talk about shameless.
greentjmtl
And it was patented in 1932...
wandel didnt design it, he also made one and copied it from elsewhere
And it was the same design because neodymium magnets were available in 1932, right?
doesnt require neodymium, regular magnets have been around plenty long enough.....they even had wood in 1932 , can you believe it?
And your proof is where?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO I need this for my hay barn , garage etc on my farm excellent can't wait to buy a bunch and set em up
Great video and all your wonderful wisdom and advice. Thanks for the link. 🇺🇲
Of course rats are getting cautious: at 6:10, before letting the rat go, you're basically telling him your entire plan about how you're going to catch his friends
This is an amazingly humane and useful trap!
Edit: 7:09 nevermind
Doesn’t every one always want the big rat to fall in to here the thump like if your agree
Looked for the wooden Trap in Description to order a few and could NOT find it shown? Thank you interesting Idea.
That doorway in the trashcan reminded me of Frodo and Sam when they entered the Volcano to throw the ring. Totally had that scene music running through my head while I saw that ^^
Are you crazy never never let a rat go love the Trap keep them coming definitely will make
Alan Call He does it so that his videos don't get demonetized. It's youtube who is crazy. He just plays ball.
