You said you can do a lot more damage with a cut than a pierce. In majority of a cases, the opposite is true. Just because a cut is more visible doesn't mean it does more damage. Internal wounds are more lethal and harder to treat, and harder to heal.
2 things here. 1: The review here is on the black coated/painted blade. Thats why the jimping is so smooth. When you compare it to the satin blade, the jimping is MUCH sharper. 2: The handle scales on the RAT 1 is made of NYLON6. For those who dont know, NYLON6 is the main component of the composites that Glock uses in their gun frames. IMHO, much better than G-10. If you had handed me this knife for the first time, and told me that it was $85, I would've not had any problem believing that. One of the BEST knives I've ever had the pleasure to carry.
WOW, I just received my first Rat-1 in the mail. What an incredible deal! I paid $35 for mine, new and shipped. This knife surpassed all of my expectations. Especially how fast it opens and how solid it feels. As I said before, great review 5 stars. I agree with all of the pros and cons Nutn mentions in his review.
Just received mine today and am very impressed. I got the satin finish plain edge. It came super sharp, and fast opening without me having to adjust the pivot. The scales are a bit too smooth but with the handle shape and jimping on the blade it locks in nicely. Terrific value at $63 Australian. Thanks for the review nutnfancy, you keep putting good blades in my hands :)
You put me on this knife nutnfancy, and I have to say it does not disappoint. I have put mine through hard use and it is still as solid as the day I got it. Great knife.
Used the RAT 1 for the past 2 years and love it. This weekend past I needed to thrash on it a bit in -32 C weather to get a fire going...the liner lock mechanism snapped like a brittle peice of plastic leaving the blade loose and unlockable. Will be replacing it with the same knife...only sharpened a handfull of times despite being my EDC for the full time.
just lost my RAT1. Its a sad day... Carried her for almost a year and loved every minute.. Had to re order it and a Tenacious.... My day is looking better now!!!
Nutn, thanks for pointing out this knife to me. My RAT 1 (plain; satin) arrived yesterday. Love every bit about it, so much that I EDC it now. Five ounces in the waistband is doable. It's solid as a rock. Love the blade shape. I'm a full flat grind addict, and this is one hell of a knife for the money. I can buy five of these for one Lone Wolf...I think I'll buy some more.
I have been carrying this for my ED Mission (sometimes but not all). Good quality (in actions a few times down our Southern Provinces) especially the price point (I paid $40 with delivery cost to Asia). Many months in the fields and it's still functions very nicely. Tks for nice VDO review. Watching more. Safe back to the base.
Will you ever get your hands on a Ganzo G727? It's this knife, with an axis lock, 440C, is half an ounce lighter, no cheesy paint job, at ~$12-20, with a couple color options. I figured it would be a perfect "nutnfancy" knife. Knife politics aside, I think it's the best knife for your money that fits in the larger EDC/tactical role.
These are great little knives. My husband carries his everywhere. Right now, he's working on plumbing in the basement, and I'll bet that knife is being used. They're everyday use items.. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
About 2 months ago, I bought a SOG Flash 1. I used it at work for 2 nights and on the 2nd night, it failed. The blade chipped extremely bad. I took it back and got a BenchMade 551 with 154cm, and I'm loving it. It performs great for my particular use. Yesterday, I talked with Lynne Thompson from ColdSteel, He convinced me to try their AUS8A. I'm not expecting much difference in performance, but I'm going to give it a try. I ordered it expecting it to fail but, I'm trying to keep an open mind.
I got my Rat 1 from Amazon yesterday, I selected the plain edge in stainless finish. This blade is a steal for the price. It's well made and sharp out of the box, it fits my large hands perfectly and I like the weightiness of it. I had no plans to EDC the Rat 1, I ordered it for one of my bags as I didn't have a folder in this size, but I EDC'ed it today with good results. It's not as small and light as my SOG Mini Aegis (bought on your recommendation) but it carried well. I'm going to move the clip for tip up carry.
Great video. I have watched a few. I just wanted to thank you for serving in the armed forces and protecting our country. People don't appreciate what the armed forces do for us all. Thank you.
I picked up the version with the black blade and love it. It's built to last from the G-10 scales to the Aus-8 blade steel. I edc this knife and it really takes a beating. In fact, I like it so much that I had to go ahead and get the satin blade version. Can't beat the price, less than $30 each. Keep up the good work Nutn, love your reviews.

I just got my RAT-1 today. It's a really great knife. Fit and finish feels great and makes me wonder if my Benchmade 530 was really worth what I paid for. The weight doesn't bother me actually, and the handle's while slick are comfortable. Deployment is a little stiff to start but once you get it going it's fast. That works for me since I'm more comfortable knowing my blade won't come lose in my pocket.
I picked one of these up from Ebay and I am very pleased with the knife. They adjusted the pocket carry issue, and I find that it rides pretty low in the pocket now. Great review. I got mine for $28.
Just got mine in the mail yesterday. Serrated blade satin finish. Excellent knife! Super smooth opening, feels great in my hand. Great buy I am real happy with it. Only problems I can see are minor, the edges on the spine of the blade are a little sharp but that can be fixed and like Nutn has mentioned the jimping isnt the best but again that can be fixed.
I love these knives, I have the Black, OD green, Desert tan all in satin finish and I am also thinking of grabbing the safety orange model. Every single one came razor sharp, with almost perfect blade centering and deploy fast with thumb pressure alone.
I've got the RAT1 in OD Green with plain blade....EX-CELL-ENT!! Deploys easy, locks up with authority, no blade play, great finish and ergonomics, razor sharp from the box.....all for $35 shipped. Taiwan is producing fine blades these days. Several of the most expensive Spydercos are made in Taichung City, Taiwan.
bought the OD green/ black blade a few months back. It is heavy, but manageable, I did some of my own mods to the gimping as well as to the finger groove for a faster deployment on the thumb stud. I plan to get a second in black handles and plain blade. GO GET ONE!!!
An excellent point that I've been thinking about mentioning in future videos: toothbrush shivs work great in prison like you say; MUCH more deadly and easier to use all these blades we're talking about here.
Addendum, Since my last post I have been using my RAT I as my EDC and have put some hard use on it. I definitely would recommend this knife for an inexpensive EDC. I have come to trust the lock up, very solid for a liner lock.
Hmm, I just received my second Rat-1 folder in the mail. This one is the satin serrated version. The satin version came with a really crappy reversible thumb stud, that really hurts my thumb (I'm use to working with steel so my hands are tough). The double thumb stud on my rat-1 black version, is great and very comfortable. I'm not sure if they put this type of thumb stud on all of the satin Rat-1 knives, or just certain ones.
@nutnfancy I wasn't generally a fan of the serrations either but one day a lady crashed into my truck. It wasn't high impact but my plastic parts ran up into my wheel well onto my tire. Those serrations really went through it like butter and I drove off no fuss no muss. Unexpected real world application to my EDC that would have been tougher with my preferred blade style...
i got the rat 1 folder, out of the box it was sort of slow it needed alot of lossening up and the jimping is horrible, but it did have a strong liner lock and i didnt mind the black coating
Yeah. They have some sick colors. I would have jumped on the ones at BladeHQ but if I'm just buying one knife, plus shipping, and tax, that would be a near 40 dollar knife. So I just settled on the regular black satin finish from Amazon.
I see that and made an order. They just got them this week. I have been looking for months. Amazon only has black. No other store seems to have the coyote or olive yet...
i just got a RAT 1 for christmas an all i have to say is ITS THE BEST POCKET KNIFE I OWN BY FAR i have a gerber paraframe with its mystery steel and it was blah and now i have a rat one with serration and i just love my rat also i found out about the rat 1 via nutnfancy
@RushRadi0 They are not easy to sharpen properly and Nutn says that a serrated edge has no advantage over a good, sharp straight edge. Hope that helps. -- Veri
i got the rat1 and i luv it. plain edge satin finish. the blade is an adequate size i dont like knives smaller than this, because i just need that much length to slice thru objects generally speaking. my god the blade sooo sharp!
I agree 100% a spot on review of a great knife. The Ontario Rat 1 and 2 are knives that IMHO greatly excell in performance vs price point. IMO Rat 1 is heavy at 5+ oz the Rat 2 and its 3 in blade comes in at a featherweight 2.7oz.
I personally use a Fine Diamond stone. For all of my knifes. You can put it in your pocket, and hardly notice it. And it'll sharpen anything (Diamond stones are SUPER hard. That and ceramic stones are the only thing that can sharpen D2 steel). Plus they're fairly cheap.
@nutnfancy One advantage of serrations is that they cut things like cordage with much more ease. Not to say you can't do that with a very sharp knife but you just can't make them sharp enough to cut easily through inch inch and a half thick cordage. I use cordage like this for climbing mostly. If i'm wrong id love to know it and nut knows his stuff :)
awesome blade got the satin finish. Which did have the stiffness in opening just loosen the pivot and carry and use. And after a couple of weeks he is very smooth
yo nutn, cool vids ! this is my 2nd RAT1 and it is a VERY good knife! the first one has gone thru alot of abuse and have taken it apart 5 times and i do tell you that it is SOLID!
Try getting a torques bit driver and adjusting the pivot screw. Only loosen it in very very small increments, because it does not take much of a turn on the screw for it to speed up deployment
Just found this knife, (plain blade, not nasty black) for under $30 including p+p. I'm really surprised to find a knife with a nice Aus8 blade and (seemingly) great build quality for this low a price! Thanks for the review.
I'm really hoping Nutn does a review of the Rat 2 in the near future. I've had one for a couple of months and it kicked my mini Griptilian out of my pocket. Great knife.
For my money, my Tenacious has served me a LOT better than my RAT-1 for a general use/EDC knife. The ONE problem I have with the tenacious is the steel, which I find is prone to chipping. If you can live with that, I find the Tenacious to be a superior design with much better quality control.
I was really diappointed with the Quality control on this knife. When I got mine (satin finish, comboedge), the blade was bent in two places. I had to physically hammer it back into shape to get it straight. There was also massive blade wiggle, side-to-side. After that, the linerlock was so delicate I could force it closed with the slightest pressure on the blade spine. Worked fine for EDC but I was looking for a work knife and it was just dangerous.
I ordered a black finish blade Rat 1 last night for right under $30.00 shipped. I have had a satin finish Rat 1 for sometime. I figured the black finish was going to be crap, and you just confirmed that. O well, at around $30.00 I use this knife at work and leave my more expensive EDC in my Jeep. I work in a factory and I abuse my Rat 1s. The one I have now has held up great and it takes an excellent edge.
Just to add something they make some pretty good stuff in Taiwan. A lot of big name tool companies make some of their torque wrenches and measuring tools in Taiwan. I try to steer clear of Chinese made knives though. Stuff made in Taiwan is closer to the stuff that's made in Japan and it's of excellent quality.
You can do a lot more damage with a pierce. Slashes are just surfaces wounds. * unless you're talking about the throat. But... I'm willing to bet after a few slashes or thrusts with that knife the bad guy will seek greener pastures.
I know I'm not Nutn, but I would go for the Tenacious, I own both the RAT M1 and the Spyderco, and the Tenacious is overall a nicer knife steel wise, actuation speed, grip, pocket clip, and weight. But it also depends on what POU you want with the knife. EDC wise go with the Tenacious, camping or outdoors stuff go for the RAT.
I dont have experience with zytel but I bet you can add some grip to the handle by taking a soldering iron and poking it in a really close pattern, correct me if I'm totally wrong.
seriously, i just got mine about 2 weeks ago, been cutting cardboard and paper all this time, and its still shave sharp, haven't even thought about sharpening it yet. ill probly just have to strop it an a few weeks and it will fine haha
I just purchased the RAT 1 for a Christmas gift to a family member, and honestly, I'm not sure I like it. My only beef is I cannot deploy the blade with the thumbstuds. It's just too stiff. I've tried loosening the blade by backing off the torx screws on the axis, but nothing seems to help.
the only thing you gotta worry about with this steel is if you impact the edge on somthing thats pretty hard like say the edge of a marble countertop such as in my case, then the edge will slightly chip.. other than that.. very good knife.. and for sooo cheap. id expect to be paying upward of $75 for one of this calibur if you went to other knife companies.
@keesurt Yes I did notice their knives recently thanks. The 0100 model is exactly my thing as a fixed blade! But it is over 230$. The ZT0350 looks like a great folding one.
nutnfancy, would you happen to know the specs on the bronze phosphor & the nylon ones as well? I need to replace them in mine and I did not know the or could find the actual size of them.
Hi, I have a Victorinox One Hand Trekker. How do you think the OHT compares to the Rat1? Is the steel on the OHT so much more inferior that you would not consider buying it over the Rat1, even thought the OHT has more functions?
@nutnfancy Serrated blades increase the cutting surface of a knife. Serrated blades arent by any means the better blade, but they have their uses as well. cutting rope seems to be alot easier. If you'r going to use this knife for cutting through plastics or packaging, you should be able to get by with a straight edge. Sharppening is not to mch of a pain, you just need a rounded Diamond sharpener. Ontario usually does a great job on their serrations anyways. The serrations take up under 1/4 blade
Oh.. Is this knife, the rat 1, good for backpacking? Or should I choose another, like the spyderco tenacious? If not then what else? I have a 35$ budget...
I've put it off for many years, but today, I finally decided to pick one up, and I must say I'm glad I did.
Tell me how it is. I'm considering it
Jeff Weber Awesome knife. It locks up tight, arrives sharp, and has been my edc longer than any other knife I own.
Thanks!! I think I can safely put my kershaw drone to rest when this one comes in

i have been owning this knife for a month now. i am very happy with it. the liner lock on this knife is VERY strong
Have had this knife for almost a year... One of my best knives.. Stays sharp even with multiple daily uses
Just received mine today and am very impressed. I got the satin finish plain edge. It came super sharp, and fast opening without me having to adjust the pivot. The scales are a bit too smooth but with the handle shape and jimping on the blade it locks in nicely. Terrific value at $63 Australian. I think its time for a RAT1 flipper version.
Yes
I agree man totally
I've seen them made into one.
Patrick Jennings Interesting, show me, and got any pics?
+Veranda Tales no, a friend did it, he also turned it into a frame lock it's pretty sweet. He did a few with g10 and stonewashed blades

I love my RAT 1, more than a lot of more expensive knives. Outstanding value.
I just ordered a RAT 2 as well.
Yes, the Ontario Rat 1 with satin finished plain-edge blade and black handle is model number 8848.
Yeah. They have some sick colors.
I would have jumped on the ones at BladeHQ but if I'm just buying one knife, plus shipping, and tax, that would be a near 40 dollar knife.
So I just settled on the regular black satin finish from Amazon.
Sweet knife. Just picked it up and It's great. Thnx Nutn!
"Howya doin"... ah the old school nutnfancy reviews.
@Smigjo I work at a factory where I use my rat1 many times a day and I've been using mine for over a year now without any problems at all.
I usually use a Kershaw clash or a SOG Vulcan for EDC, but this will be going in my rotation.
Is there such thing as a perfect knife that meets every expectation?
I know I'm not Nutn, but I would go for the Tenacious, I own both the RAT M1 and the Spyderco, and the Tenacious is overall a nicer knife steel wise, actuation speed, grip, pocket clip, and weight. But it also depends on what POU you want with the knife. EDC wise go with the Tenacious, camping or outdoors stuff go for the RAT.
this is what i get for watching nutnfancy's videos... i found my next purchase!
They have this knife on Amazon for $23. Can you think of a better knife in that price point? or should I go for it?
It's FRN molded to have the same texture pattern as G-10. It doesn't provide amazing grip, but it's still a great knife.
for some reason I really love the look of the pocket clip and logo
ya you're right i got confused because a bunch of ebay sellers labeled it incorrectly as G-10
I dont have experience with zytel but I bet you can add some grip to the handle by taking a soldering iron and poking it in a really close pattern, correct me if I'm totally wrong.
seriously, i just got mine about 2 weeks ago, been cutting cardboard and paper all this time, and its still shave sharp, haven't even thought about sharpening it yet. ill probly just have to strop it an a few weeks and it will fine haha
i'm in the woods a lot! this knife would work great! and its so cheap! :) cant wait to get it!!
6:07 "a little bit of it..." ROFL!! excellent review just ordered one!!!
I just bought one of these from midway for $29.95. I like it.
@nutnfancy hey, would you recommend the RAT 1 or the spyderco tenacious?
have it with an OD handle and satin blade loving it so far
If you like this I think you should try the Ontario joe pardue utilitarian 2. Great value!
Think I might need to get one of these on pay day. Can't find a strait edge without the black though. :(
Get the Satin version, it's nicer and more durable. Same price. Awesome folder for the money.
If you only had to pick one low priced, high quality edc knife, what would you pick?
Nutnfancy would you rather have the serrated or straight edge of this knife?
Just got the rat 2 love it
@RushRadi0 Nutn generally prefers straight edge in any knife. -- Veri
Think you can do another update video on the rat1 nutn?
@keesurt Yes I did notice their knives recently thanks. The 0100 model is exactly my thing as a fixed blade! But it is over 230$. The ZT0350 looks like a great folding one.
Need to review the rat 2. One of the best edc knives out there.
Hi, Mr. Nutnfancy do you know if brigade still ships catalogs? Went on their website and couldn't see where to get one. Any ideas?
Have you reviewed the kershaw tilt yet? if not have you at least tried it out?
nutnfancy, would you happen to know the specs on the bronze phosphor & the nylon ones as well? I need to replace them in mine and I did not know the or could find the actual size of them.
Hi,
I have a Victorinox One Hand Trekker. How do you think the OHT compares to the Rat1? Is the steel on the OHT so much more inferior that you would not consider buying it over the Rat1, even thought the OHT has more functions?
False alarm. I was washing light colors. It was still in the basket with the darks.
Great knife for the money.
Would you use this as a tactical more or an EDC because I am currently looking for a tac/EDC combo, either with two knives or the one.
The serrations take up under 1/4 blade
the model also comes with a satin finish blade that he didnt mention
hey nutn how are your duracoated knives holding up? is the finish harder than the the powder coated blades?
Oh.. Is this knife, the rat 1, good for backpacking? Or should I choose another, like the spyderco tenacious? If not then what else? I have a 35$ budget...
gonna order me a brown handle black blade one, $34 sounds great
