Took apart my rat 1 today. Watched this video twice and it now it’s 10X better. Didn’t have oil on the washers. Used KPL to lube it up. Action is super slick now. Thanks Nick. Your videos are the best!
I love how you set up your thumb nails for your videos. All reviews are of the knife open and all disassemblies are of the knife closed. It makes it easier for people in there phone (me) to know what kind of video it is without clicking on it because you can't read the whole title. It's a gem and as are you Sir Nick. Thank you and this was just the video I was watching when I noticed it. Cheers! 👍🏻
great video...the only Rat 1 assembly video I saw that specifically and clearly described the washer centering step... just what I needed to fix my centering/blade play. Thanks, Nick!
Many thanks Nick, that bit about the washers needing to be centred on the pivot has just solved the problem I was having with my lovely new RAT-1 in D2.
Hi Nick, Just a small detail... Lost my old Rat 1 so I had to buy a new one.... New models DO NOT have the d shape cut out... Back spacers rotate freely now.... Just something to keep in mind... Love Your videos. Keep the great work!
Re the 3 year old post about the new model rats not having D shaped spacer pins...? I bought a brand new rat 1 from a reputable dealer 2 weeks ago, and its 100% deffo got D shaped pins. So I'm thinking that the one with round pins is most likely a chinese copy of the original RAT ...🤷♂️??
I like your idea about posting consecutive videos about each lnife. About the RAT, I wish they made the #2 model in D2 steel. Can't really handle a full size folder myself.
+Xithz Oh man, I already own and love my D2 RAT 1 (big fan of larger-sized knives), but you definitely just made me want the RAT 2 in D2 so I could call it that.
I like my Rat1. I bought a Rat1a (assisted) but went back to my standard Rat1. The assisted opening is crap. They put a torsion spring in the pivot point. Mine was so hard to open that you had to use both hands to open it...
I installed a .020" thick bronze washer on the left (non locking liner) side. I lapped the washer in a figure of 8 motion until the blade offered the right resistance. It is a touch stiff but will wear in. In effect, due to the shoulder on the pivot, I effectively "Sebenza'd" the Rat. It was solid before but I am here to tell you that it is MUCH more solid feeling now. Source for the bronze washer, 1 penny sanded/ground to .020" then lapped to tune (check the year to see which ones are actually copper/ tin/ zinc). Pivot hole dia. .242"
Took me several tries to get the blade re-centered when closed, I couldn't figure out what was causing it but I kept playing with the pivot screws until I guess and checked it correct. Thought I had ruined my knife. At least mine was flawless on the inside of the liners.
the blade on a lot of the rats (2 and 1) is pretty off center but only when closed, because of the liner pushing on the blade when closed. Not a big deal at all mines like that as well, I took it apart, didn't feel like doing it again, plus mine came like that so i didn't care.
Thanks for the ring being caught in the pin. It happened to me. Also, I just got my Rat 1 and it does not have D shaped separator pins. Both ends are round now.
Many thanks Nick. I have a Rat1 D2 on it's way to me. Would a squirt of WD40 be a 'beautiful thing!' or might there be a more advisable lubricant? More thanks.
Thanks for the help.... Also your voice sounds like and cartoon nerd thats super smart and knows it.... Thats super cool and I'm jealous.... Shpuld look into voice acting
I wish I came here first because with my sleep-deprived self I decided to try and maintain it but 3 hours later, two stripped screws later, a file later, and a hammer application I finally got my rat to where I wanted it and can probably never maintain it again and should just buy a new one having this one having been my guinea pig for being my first personally maintained knife
thank you so much! I couldn't get it centered for the life of me. I thought...I'll just watch The Nick take it down! All better within 10 minutes! Silly, finicky washer.
Hey Nick, I have a model 1A that has the assisted open feature with a safety switch. Could you please do a disassembly video on that model? I cant seem to figure out the darn safety switch configuration.
Nich how about the RAT 1A...ever do anything on that one? I'm curious if its possible to move the D2 steel from the newer RAT 1 into the frame and scales of the 1A?
Hi Nick greetings from a cold/wet Southern part of Australia good video as usual.Wonder what lube do you use for the pivot and also notice you applied something to the blade for corrosion.Guess the lock for the screws was blue Loctite or equiv know not to use the red.As usual watch all your reviews Thanks. Ernie VK3DET.
My green guy used to be superb action. Lately I noticed the liner lock moved over farther, and was harder to disengage and close the knife. No biggied I figured, did full tear down and clean, and put back, and now the blade touches the right liner when closed! I kept taking apart reseating, even sweapped nylon/PB washer order...boom nothing. It seemed each time I put back together, my once perfectly centered Rat1 was now permenantely defected to one side on the liner scraping when shut. I tried everything possible, a dam shame out of the blue this started to go south. It seems odd to me the washers ID is bigger than that pivot collar too. Could it just be poor workmanship rearing its ugly head finally (Don't get me started in the Carter Prime I just had to get smooth out of box with IKBS explosions) EDIT: And yes centering those washers is key, but even so it still seems off- maybe I need to order new ones.
I know this is an old video, but can anyone tell me what size the pocket clip screws are? I'm considering getting a D2 Rat1, but i'd like to make use of a deep carry clip i already own.
Hey there, Nick. New Subscriber. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on something cheap and simple like a Svord Peasant Knife (I guess the closest thing to compare it to is an Opinel). I enjoy your Thrifty Thursday series, and have developed an appreciation for rough-around-the-edges kind of knives, since big name brand knives are so damn expensive here in South Africa (weak exchange rate, shipping, customs, and local retailers trying to make ridiculous profits. It all adds up). We regularly pay 3-4 times the US price, and it's kinda nuts to think that it's often more affordable to get a decent custom knife from a good SA knifemaker than it is to buy something like a Spyderco PM 2. Oh well, I've learned to find the joy in my Moraknivs and Peasant Knives.
South African Knife prices are out of control. 3x US Prices for a Spyderco Tenacious! I've been meaning to check out the Peasant for a while, maybe I will!
Then again, you guys have some stellar custom makers down there. It was a regret of my trip that I didn't have a chance to make it to visit any. Beautiful country otherwise, at least in parts!
Hey Nick, what program do you use to edit your vids? You might want to use a high pass filter on de audio. I can hear a low hum of I expect is the airco. It's removed easisy with a -20dB 80 Hz high pass filter. Let me know if I can help :-) Keep the vids coming :-)
Yep, I generally shut off the air conditioner, but it was just too damned hot for this one. And I edit in Apple's Quicktime. I'm sure I could rig some sort of filter (although 80Hz with big shoulders might pinch a bit on my vocal range), good idea!
Ah, I meant an digital audio-effect to filter out a certain frequency. It's part of video editors like iMovie and Final Cut X. As you use Quicktime you can't improve your video's any further as far as I know .. Switching to iMovie or an other video editor would help because it contains lot's of effects to fix small annoyances like lighting, sound, etc. Having said this, I don't mind too much, so keep going :-)
Peet: I understood. Remember, I'm a signal processing guy for a living :) Quicktime is just a tradeoff to edit quickly and with minimal complexity. Time spent editing is time not spent doing the parts of this I like. Hence the low budget :D
I know this video is 2 years old but has anyone tried swapping the washers to the bronze touching the blade instead of the Teflon? I did and now it runs smooth as silk.
Hi, I bought a rat I and mine seem to have double washes (bronze + teflon) on one side and only a big one teflon on the other side. That is normal ? thank you
To whom it may concern I had my answer from Ontario directely and I share with you : ''Because they were made with two different styled washers in the last year. One is Teflon and the other is a brass washer. We’ve had a lot of complaints about the switch so we’ve had them changed back to the other way of making them. We’ve had complaints about the Teflon and brass washer together. So they are in the process of being switched back to both brass washers.''
the washer thing was a huge help, couldnt figure out why the blade wasnt centered when i put it back together. thanks nick!

great video...the only Rat 1 assembly video I saw that specifically and clearly described the washer centering step... just what I needed to fix my centering/blade play. Thanks, Nick!
Based on your recommendation, I’ve bought two watch repair tools, a Wiha micro torx set and frog lube. I learn a lot from your reviews. Cheers Nick.
Many thanks Nick, that bit about the washers needing to be centred on the pivot has just solved the problem I was having with my lovely new RAT-1 in D2.
Thanks for the tutorial, mate! I reassembled my Rat and now it works & looks better than ever. Cheers from Moscow!
Didn't think about the washer being centered and the action was all wacked out. After watching your video I was able to right my wrongs. Thanks!
just used your vid to rehab my new Rat 1. What a difference, smooth as silk and the blade flies right out. Thanks.
Hi Nick,
Just a small detail... Lost my old Rat 1 so I had to buy a new one.... New models DO NOT have the d shape cut out... Back spacers rotate freely now.... Just something to keep in mind...
Love Your videos. Keep the great work!
I'm curious if the lack of d shaped stand offs means knife is a fake ?
Mark... cue up the suspenseful music!

Gives us a run down on your favourite steels, Gem -> Rust bucket. :) You will always be my hand model.
Good question!
I like your idea about posting consecutive videos about each lnife.
About the RAT, I wish they made the #2 model in D2 steel. Can't really handle a full size folder myself.
Oh man do I hear you. A RAT 2 in D2 is an instant buy.
The R2D2 would be a terrific name as well!
+Xithz Oh man, I already own and love my D2 RAT 1 (big fan of larger-sized knives), but you definitely just made me want the RAT 2 in D2 so I could call it that.
Like the Rat 1 & 2 so much I bought two of each:) D2 steel in one 1 and two # 2's, and AUS 8 in one 1:)
Awesome timing - mine just arrived!
I may get one just because you speak so highly of it.
I like my Rat1. I bought a Rat1a (assisted) but went back to my standard Rat1. The assisted opening is crap. They put a torsion spring in the pivot point. Mine was so hard to open that you had to use both hands to open it...
Nice video! Just got myself a Rat 1
Was hesitant to modify my rat 1 until I saw this vid

The inside of this Rat-1 looks beautiful compared to what my Byrd Cara Cara 2 looked like.
Good info on the spacers ! And the pivot ! There a little different than most .
Took me several tries to get the blade re-centered when closed, I couldn't figure out what was causing it but I kept playing with the pivot screws until I guess and checked it correct. Thought I had ruined my knife. At least mine was flawless on the inside of the liners.

Many thanks Nick. I have a Rat1 D2 on it's way to me. Would a squirt of WD40 be a 'beautiful thing!' or might there be a more advisable lubricant? More thanks.
Wd40 technically isn't a lubricant. I'd recommend Triflow

Thank you!
'Locktighted'. Lol subscribed
What's the blue stuff you're applying? Sorry... I guess some kind of lock-tite thing?
I tried to take out the nylon washers...don't do it unless you want the blade to touch the liners!
40 dollar knife has D shaped stand offs. So it is possible to do them right, 150 dollar spyderco?
LOVE THE ACCENT!!
Hi Nick! I know you've mentioned it in a past video. But what torque wrench set do you use? Thank you
+howard packer Check my "Tools I use to maintain my tools" video, there's a link in the description.

It was easier than i thought.
Newer model 1's are running on 1 bronze and 1 teflon washer
I just disassembled mine and it does not have the same washer sizing issue that yours does. So it would appear that they have fixed this issue.
Want that reate wave review real bad right now
Understood! But I'm gonna need to take my time there!
+Nick Shabazz You got one for review?! That's fantastic! I absolutely love mine. Can't wait to see the video.
+Nick Shabazz take ur time! looking forward to it

hi what is the product you use on blade?
FURA-GEAR titanium scales and D2 blade £28.00. any thoughts on these Chinese raiders?
you should review the CRKT M16 knife
it is currently my EDC knife and even though I have the $35 version, I really like it and it seems like a decent inexpensive knife
Hi how did you remove locktite from the screws? I have disassembled but now I have problem with locktite to remove it.
You don't generally need to.
Nick Shabazz But suppose I still shall put a droplet for assembly?
I usually hate taking apart knives, but I had to take this one apart because some one dropped it in sand. confirmed this is the AK-47 of pocketknives
Добро видео. Добра работа.
Poison Ivy first, now the caustic chemicals...Is there a market for reviewing EDC gloves?
Hah, probably. Or I could go pretentious and just move to white gloved reviews.
Since it didn't happen during the Rolex magazine review while on your YACHT, I think the opportunity was missed...
how Italian are you 1-10
Mussolini
randybobanders made my day haha
lmao Noah
He is from Brooklyn
Thanks!!!
What's the purpose of loctiting?
I need to get ahold of decent torx bits, anyone have some recommendations for a decent price?
A bit late for a reply but Wiha make some high quality Torx bits usually for around $20.
How often do you clean your RAT 1
+Devin Whenever the performance drops. Otherwise, it's fine.
+Nick Shabazz okay thank you
It's September 2017 now where is my RAT 2 in D2???!!!
This is one knife that my big thumb simply struggles with when pushing the lock bar release. Just seems too shallow for me... Oh well, give it away.
The lock spring is way to heavy . Needs tuning .
Am I the only one who finds to issue edcing the rat 1? It's barely noticeable in my pocket and can do anything and everything a knife should.
how to take it apart.
How to safely dispose of your RAT 1 and buy a better knife... Jk. :) I don't see the appeal, but to each their own.
EisNeiN you obviously don't know quality son! Go play with your Ozark trail knifes from walmart son!
