I’ve been a carpenter for 40 years, I cut stuff. To me knives are tools, not fondling art. My rat 1 and rat2 are my pocket knives because they cut great and are comfortable in both my pocket and my hands. I bought some other knives to carry, more expensive ones, but I’ve found though my own use that the rats are the best and for the price.....I won’t cry when I lose it.
Yep, I do furniture refinishing and repair. The RATs are the best knives for my purposes
Fondling art 🤣😂🤣...No doubt ! best edc in and around that price range !
Much as I like the R1 D2 there would be something pretty cool about having an R2 D2 knife. Just as long as C3PO didn’t try and borrow it all the time.
Strap yourself in, we're about to make the jump to hyperspace......there is now an R2D2.
SpittingTruth Indeed. These ARE the knives that you are looking for. For the price they cannot be surpassed.
@@davidmathews2124 yeah r2 d2 is the best beater knife out there. I work in a warehouse and i use it to cut cardboard and even scraping shit off cement lol. like it a lot better than my spyderco tenacious
The R2-D2 is a slinger. It does well at every task and kinda hides under the radar. Great knife, cool name.
I don't see how anyone can complain about a rat 1 for EDC. I don't hardly even notice it when clipped to the top of my pocket yet I guess a rat 2 would definitely not be noticable at all I guess. I love my rat 1.
You got it in aus 8 or d2?
@@Phaminator525 I just have the AUS 8 which seems to work great. The heat treat is good and seems to hold an edge really good. I contemplated on a d2 but the aus 8 was so much cheaper and comparisons between the two seemed to show the aus 8 was also really good due to their good heat treat. Seems great for an edc to me but most people that live in the city and have barely any use for a knife at all may prefer the smaller one I guess? The AUS 8 is a great knife and I'm sure the d2 is as well. Aus 8 is more resistant to corrosion as well and since it holds an edge decently and is easier to sharpen plus cheaper I just went with that. D2 you'd have to have diamond to sharpen probably and I'm use to mirror polished edges which is going to be really hard to obtain with that hard of a steel I imagine but haven't tried it personally. Even the Aus 8 seems to be hard enough my regular Dick brand meet packing knife steel don't work as easily on it as other knives I have.
@@jackle842000 no I totally agree with you on the softer steels. I have r2 d2 and I cant stand sharpening it. I'd much rather have something easier to sharpen. Even my 940 s30v steel is easier to sharpen than my r2d2. Edge retention isnt really worth it for me since I work it so hard at my job that even if it was my 940 it would dull within a few days. So d2 is kinda useless to me and I realized I shouldve went with a aus 8 for a beater knife.
@@Phaminator525 yeah I'm really happy with the aus 8 so far. I'm glad I got it. I was planning on the d2 but grabbed the aus 8.
Agreed - I don’t feel my rat 1 in my pocket at all - unless I’m where gym shorts.
I find the reason ontario can sell knives so cheap is because they run them down the assembly line pretty fast. Not really fussing about fit and finish too much. But i find they pay attention to the important things though. I bought 3 rat 1’s in d2 at the same time. All different colours. And they were all a little different in the fit and finish area. But they all worked great. Had to loosen the pivot on one just a bit. But that was all. Love my rat.
Yeah i bought one in brown and the scales were a little rough around the screws and the centering was a little off. A black one that was perfect. I still love them both because they still work great
I absolutely love mine. My blade is centered all the way down. It throws a very good fire ball from my ferro. rod and that’s a big plus for me. Extremely sharp straight out from the box but I went the extra mile and stropped it.
I watched this video after I got one oops. After unboxing mine I immediately ordered another one lol. Mine is centered all the way down and whips out like bamn. I think it has decent bushings. The blade is also well balanced and locks up great. The ergo's are great for me no issues. From scales to bladeI I work outdoors and do allot of work with pvc and and other plastics. Sometimes retro fitting stuff. The blade design on this is really good for medium to fine work. I really like D2 over aus8. It doesn't feel like it's going to come loose over time in regards to blade. Seems like a solid construction. The spine is pretty serious too it's begging for a ferro rod. I didn''t consider it as a defensive blade #1 liner lock #2 blade shape. I do love that it's s flat grind even better. The scales are attractive enough for being cheap and the clip rocks. I also like the weight of it for working when cutting at angles. I hesitated on the aus8 but the d2 made this an exceptional value and what's grown to be a classic design. My heavy duty and defensive blade is a Cold Steel Voyager XL tanto which is also on board every day. This Rat definitely makes me still want to have a primary defensive blade. Although it may work in a pinch I trust my life to the cold steel especially the tri-ad system.
I enjoyed your review thanks for your hard work!
I have the rat2 and i love it, and i don't think its ugly, i think it looks like a knife and not like a wounded bird or like a battleship, like the new angular tanto tactical things.
A little late but I just ordered mine, it was a real struggle to choose one between this one and the cutjack, but at the end I believe there are better reviews on the R1D2.
I’ve heard mixed reviews by some with the D2 on the Cutjack. Some have said they didn’t get the treat right and it is a bit soft and the edge retention isn’t what it should be. It is a better looking knife for sure. What I like about the RAT is the dual liners. It is a tank. And the ergos are spot on. The R2D2 is a better carry size, BUT they just scaled it down 80% rather than keep the ergos of its Daddy. If you don’t have small hands it doesn’t really fit that great. Why I can’t get one. Handling it was a disappointment. The RAT-1 fits me perfectly. They should have redesigned the RAT-2 instead of scaling it down on a CAD machine keeping the same proportions. A damned shame considering the thought they clearly put into the RAT-1. I’d have one if they did.
I just watched this old video, I have the knife mine is perfect in every way, had the thing for years and it’s still perfect in every way. I have used it extensively over the years being a great knife for camping whether is bush or beach. Only ever washed it and wiped it down .🎉
Just ordered this to replace a Kershaw Scallion I've had for 20 years that finally broke. Looks like a great size and a perfect working knife or edc. I like knives a little on the larger size. I had so many issues with the scallion I'm glad it broke.
I've bought 2 RAT 1's and 2 RAT 2's. One of each model was as perfect as can be expected and the other 2 were a bit sloppy. My sloppy RAT2 has the same issues as yours with the blade. My sloppy RAT 1 had to be returned as the cutting edge of the blade was warped like a bad 2x4. If you flipped the blade up and looked down at it it was all sorts of curves. The 2 that were perfect and the 1 that was acceptable have all performed flawlessly for over 2 years now and I absolutely love them.
Haha thank you for the info, saved me 100 Canadian pesos 5 years later
I've already watched your Spyderco Tenacious review, and I've made up my mind that I will be buying it. Now I'm watching this review to see if I'll be buying the Rat 1 also.
Edit: from what I've seen in your review, I've decided that I'll also be buying the Rat 1.
The Tenacious is surprisingly good. I didn't give it near enough respect when I got one, coming down to it from PM2, PM3, Military, and Manix. For being the cheap Chinese Spyderco, it's still a good lil knife. Not great steel, but nicely designed and has the Spyderco heritage that I love.
I was literally just about to order this. It was either this or another civivi as i have five in my collection and impressed with quality for price. Not American i know but so many of our blades now are made overseas.
There's one in my pocket right now. It's a nice knife, inexpensive as well. The D2 does corrode rather easily. I have a good sized folder collection, and it fits into my rotation along with knives like an endura, a shamann, and a Cold Steel Lawman. All more expensive blades. I also have a RAT 2 that locks up late and has some blade play.
I just got a rat2 . In d2 It has none of those issues and I think it’s great so far .
Wanted to get Spyderco to see whats the hype about. But after looking around, it is way too overpriced for the stuff they are putting out.
Manix cost 2.5 to 3 times the price of Rat1 or R2d2 in my country btw. lol
Take your knife apart and see the other side of the scales you can easily tell its glass filled nylon.
I open beer bottles with my rat 1. The teeth of the cap digs into my plastic a bit but I don’t care cause it’s $40 and I have another one in my drawer waiting for the day I lose it. There is nothing wrong with Nylon. It’s an extremely reliable and durable material - G10 is not a “better” material in my opinion. Maybe some better grip - but it’s not a problem with the rat 1
3 years later... I had the aus8 first. ThenI bought the d2 . You payed 37...I payed 38 my number is 349 out of 800. The only issue I don't like with my knife is the handle is too smooth. Other than that.this knife will do what I need it to do yea, I fail to also mention. I cut rope, open mail, cut veggies do daily things with this and it does it flawlessly. Absolutely I'd love a 850.00 folder, but it wouldn't do what I do with this knife to an expensive knife. I'll also say. That 850 knife might not be honestly any better. I'm going to give an example with the few fixed blades that I have left... Both my dogs got porcupined withing a week from each other and I needed money fast to have them surgically removed which was costly so I pawned most my knives to pay for that . But I digress....I still have my bravo 1 lt with desert ironwood burl in 3v. And my bushcraft black.....you guessed it. I use my mora more often when I'm out in the woods... My point is.....inexpensive knives are excellent, and by all means do not suck
I bought mine at a bass pro shop about 8yrs ago for 29 dollars American. Of course mines the aus 8 version but it doesn’t change the fact that I probably won’t ever buy another knife. I can’t justify spending $100 plus dollars on something I’ll be afraid to use, and I’ve used mine for almost everything imaginable. Every scratch, and every dent tell a story of how this seemingly cheap pocket knife has gotten me out of trouble. My only complaint is that it isn’t made in America. Great review, and yes the legends are true.
Hey great review. Just so you know all the liner locks are bowed like that. Better to know its manufactured that way and not an inconsistency.
I just went over mine with a fine tooth comb, and it doesn't have any of these fit and finish issues that yours does. Could be a QC issue. Could be that this knife is better bought in person.
Love mine..... put the PM2 and 0452cf back in the closet.
Ruike or real steel should make a copy of this design. The build control would be way better.
You need a few beverages to consider which knife to use?
Yeah Baby ☝️ ‼️
I just ordered the R1 D2 w carbon fiber scales. Should be a very nice ‘gentleman’s large folder’. And yeah...reviews are pretty universally over the moon. The specific tests on these Ontario D2 blades show it to have exceptionally long lasting sharpness. Works for me.
Man, mine does the exact same, as far a centering, but I believe thats due to the stong liner lock
If your goal is to oogle a knife or play with it, then spend the money. If you’re buying a knife to do knife things, you can’t spend your money better. Pretty it ain’t, but rugged and useful it is. It will do the same functions you bought your $500 Sibenza to do at less than 1/10th the cost and you won’t feel bad about beating it up, which it can take. I love mine and only have two small gripes. The scales are not grippy enough, but this is mitigated by the awesome ergos that lock your hand in place and the RAT-1fits my hand perfectly. The 2nd is that it is a tad heavy for what it is, but still fits my pocket well and isn’t a deal breaker. A great design and hard to beat for the money.
I love the rat. I also love my XM-18 user. Both bring me joy in different ways, and both get used hard. At the end of the day, we all like what we like for whatever reason we want. There is no right or wrong.
@@metal_complex I’d love an XM-18. But will not spend more than I’d spend on an AD-15 or thereabouts. You get that for which you pay but once you get beyond $2-300, you reach a place of diminishing returns on your money IMO. I’ve had my eyes on a Ritter Hogue lately. Perhaps a Native Chief, but I won’t spend beyond that. That’s just me but the joy of Capitalism is spending one’s money as it suits you. For me, all my equipment is specific to a job, e.g. work knife, bird and trout knife, skinning knife, multi tool, etc.
@@cbwelch4 if all you want from the object is utility then ya.
This is the part a lot of people refuse to try to understand:
Is the XM 18 $225 better than the AD-15? No. Do I LIKE it $225 more? You bet. They're both knives. They both cut. They're both durable. The XM (to me) feels nicer in the hand, and has the tri way pivot, which I love. It's more customizable, and has an aesthetic I prefer. It's made in the US, and I like that. (So is the REAL Demko AD-15, but I assume we're comparing with the CS variant) - Is that all worth the extra money to me? You bet. I don't care if they perform roughly the same. I'm an enthusiast. Ive said this a billion times - I dont just buy knives because they cut. I buy what I like because I like it. There's simply no arguing around it. This train is gonna keep on going down the same track it's always been on.
Looks like you got bent liners. Ontario might make that right. The grinds on my Rats aren’t great, apart from my S35VN version, that’s very well done.
This knife is now 6 years old and still going strong. I'll be alright 😉
I’m getting one after I purchase a PM2👍👍🔪
I love my D2 Rat 1 but check out the Byrd Raven 2 in BD1 tool steel. Its giving my rat 1 a run for its money as a edc budget beater liner lock knife. You might be surprised.
Hey, how's your Byrd Raven2 holding up? Was considering raven 2, but eventually went with RAT coz of the steel. Might get a byrd later on though
@@victortan6378 still going strong
Edge retention ?
you want to see real hype? Spyderco military, ZT and other high-tech overhyped tactical wonder folders.
They all have reviews in my channel. Along with knives in much higher calibers.
you probably have $300 knives and never use any of them in the bush, or anything other than opening your new amazon orders.
Try $800+ lol. They get used. Calm yourself.
boy,..mine just doesnt flip open like that. tried looseing pivot screw, but nothing
I'm grinding the liner and scale to get to the flipper button better.
Mine is ridiculously stiff too. If i push really hard with my thumb I can get the blade to open halfway, but it sure as hell doesn't "snap" open like this one. I've tried to break it in by opening/closing it hundreds of times while I'm sitting watching tv, but it hasn't really helped.
Try very very slightly loosening the pivot screw.
And try putting some machine oil on the bushings.
I was just about to buy one , been looking at this knife for a while and then I turned it over , on one side of the blade it has Ontario knife co the other side has Taiwan , well that Taiwan just Ended that sale and every video I have watched on this knife No one mentions that . I buy nothing from Taiwan .
Your best bet for inexpensive knives from the USA is Kershaw's budget USA line. They're a bit more expensive though.
Taiwan makes great bikes..
Its ok to buy from taiwan coz they hate china!
@@happiness8138 politically speaking, taiwan is a complete 180 from the rest of china, but im not surprised that this goes over the heads of some people watching these vids.
So naive . Taiwan makes heaps of good quality stuff. They are TAIWAN not china you dork
dude ur a little obsessive over a great knife for under $35
You think this is obsessive? Lol. You know I have 1600 uploads right? This is nothing 🤣
A great and honest review, just how all reviews should me. You have my like and sub ATB
What kind of energy drink you got there in the upper cup holder....🤔⁉️
