What brought you to this video? Are you recording as a hobby or as a career? Where are you in the process?? What is holding you back currently??

I have converted a TuffShed (9'x11') storage/tool shed into a recording studio. I am learning/teaching Pro Tools & home recording. My plan is to become good enough to do it as an "encore career" after I retire from teaching in the next 5 years.

I'm a full-time automation developer and a part-time film score composer and engineer, I want to do music full-time but the deeper I get into my day career the more ground I need to make up to leave it

What brought me to this video?
I was searching for some inspiration since I am about to set up my third home studio right now when I discovered your channel. Decided then to watch some of your older videos as well.
    Hobby or career?
I have been recording strings professionally since 2008 but this is not my only source of income, so it is a sort of half-time career.
Where am I in the process, what is holding me back currently?
The biggest obstacle right now might be organizing limited space, with instruments, gear, cables, microphone stands and the like.
Also I want to have some better presentation of my work in form of video and picture.

Interesting video! I'm somewhat of an audio engineer myself. I was part owner of a commercial studio at one time but now have what I would consider an upscale home studio. I lived in Nashville for several years and am actually looking to move back soon. Looking for some property now. I may have been pretty close by. My day gig was on E.Trinity near Gallatin pike. One thing I personally noticed about recording music on a commercial level is that sometimes you end up having work on projects that are really not your thing. At least I did. But not always. Just something to be aware of. That said: I've always pictured myself as a track guy /mix engineer. However if I had my choice, being an instrumentalist/songwriter above all my ultimate goal would be to record and produce a hit song of my own. Kinda like Tom Scholz did with Boston.

I'm a starter to recording drums, actually just starting to build my home studio. I did some live band PA, wedding gig, A Cappella live PA events, and I recorded MIDI drums for album... but never have the opportunity to have a place of my own and record real drums. Hope it'll work, so come to learn more about recording drums in home studio. :D

I have a small Home Studio in Chattanooga, slowly making RUclips videos when I have time. I’ve been trying to make recording music into a career for the past few years. It’s been a really slow process. I subscribed to your channel a while back for the home studio tours so I could get ideas to implement into mine, but all of your content has been very informative and helpful! Keep it up man, I’m always looking forward to the next one!

Hello Andrew. Great info. I have made the decision to move forward with starting my studio. I only need a few more pieces of gear and I will be up and running. Had equipment from when I played with a band and I have been wanting to do this for a while now. I enjoy your content and down to earth personality. Your tips will be put to use, Thanks for the content that you post. It is so appreciated. Keep it coming.

    Hey Andrew!
i remember watching your drum recording video 2 years ago and getting great value from it, its so cool seeing your channel and career evolve...
ill be a student for the close 3 years (electronics engineering) and want to start moving my recording career to a more professional direction during that time. i was wondering if you have any experience with being a recording and mixing engineer while also studying and if you could share any tips?
    thank you for the video!

Thanks man. For sure, batch your work and engineering time. This will sound overly simplistic but, Any off nights or time you have from school/studying dedicate that time to getting better at recording. Whether that’s practical application by doing so, learning about different techniques/gear/software, starting your social media presence. It’s never too early. Don’t limit yourself! Just because your a student shouldn’t stop you, in fact the opposite is true. Great to hear from you!

Curious, did you go to school for recording? Most, if not all, large studios like East/West, Electrical Audio, BlackBird, etc, won't so much as look in ones direction unless one has some sort of degree in audio/media production. And they usually only offer a non-paid internship while one is enrolled in said degree program. Loved the vid. Cheers.

Nice to see you again man, also is great to hear that you're doing well. At the moment I'm just about to buy an audio interface + a mic to start recording my songs and learn about song production and writing techniques, so I'm really excited.

@@AndrewMasters A presonus audiobox, it's quite cheap but I think it sounds decent for starting, and also the possibility to record 2 mics at the same time would be great if I want to record some drums with your method

I have a Hybrid Analog/Digital HS that I do just for fun really. I have acquired a hell of a lot of guitar/amp/recording gear over the years. I'm a broadcasting engineering principle for a fortune 500 company. I'm interested in this topic as I like the thought of quitting the corporate rat race one day but not set just yet to retire and attempt to make it a viable home based business. I have the engineering skills down fine (both audio production and broadcast video). I just need to practice recording/mixing and some mastering. My niche could be guitar tracking and bass. I'm confident in getting great guitar tone in the box and would love to carry this over to tracking drums.

hey Andrew, I know this is an older video but I found it really helpful, so thanks. I was wondering if you give this kind of personalized advice in your 1-on-1 calls. I've been improving my skills and investing in quality gear for the last 5-6 years, after attending a year of schooling for recording/producing/etc. I feel like I have all the tools I need, but am really struggling when it comes to branding/social media and bringing in clients. I'm still working a passionless job to make money and it's such a drag!!!

I'm working on my mixing skills.
I record music I write. I've been writing music and recording for about 10 years.
I just started releasing my music on RUclips. Spotify and the others are next.
    I'm a carpenter and a musician.
I like both, so I split my time between them.
My gear is holding me back at this point.
I'm using protools9 on a offline computer. Lol some of my plugins make the crackle noise. Computer overload sound.
    It's been fun though.
It challenges me to be more creative.
    I enjoy your videos.
    I like your attitude.
Check out my RUclips page when you have a free minute in your schedule.
Unlikely I'm sure. Thanks for your info.

Andrew Masters oh but right you went to a recording school? If you did how much was the tuition and which school was it?

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  4 года назад +2

@@bryansanchez8298 I did however I don't recommend going to a recording school to "learn to record." Definitely not a good investment. If you're going to go to a school I would pick the school for the networking opportunities and location (where you're going to want to work post-school).
I went to MI in Los Angeles. I took their audio engineering program (6 months long). The benefit of it was, it was in Los Angeles, and I did an internship (that I found on my own) while I was a student. Therefore before I "graduated" I found myself a job on my own at one of the best studios out there and worked there for 6 years.
The school didn't teach me how to record, they didn't get me my internship, or my job. However it clarified some details for me and had a fairly well rounded curriculum for a 6 month program. I believe that program was about $26,000 at the time.
      Cheers!

What brought me here was your comment on EW Pop Brass. I am looking for some advice in writing for a brass section. I noticed that some people write brass/woodwind sections starting a bit earlier than strings, like 2/24ths (fl studio) of a 16th note early. Is it because breath instruments take a while to spool up?

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  5 лет назад +1

Wow, cool! I can’t speak to why other people write a specific way. I have encountered that before and I usually have the section start earlier because of that slower attack. Thanks for the comment!
