You know how sometimes in sport, you are better off just doing it than overthinking. In effect you are letting the subconscious do it's thing and the best thing your consciousness can do is not get in the way. Well when the writers of really great songs say "Oh I wrote it in ten minutes" I think it is similar. Their subconcious did all the hard work first and all they did consciously (ie the ten minutes) was capture the thought.
Check out "Allison" for a great song, and for a tearjerker, check out "Veronica", which was written about his grandmother and her journey through her Alzheimer's disease. He wrote it after a visit to a nursing home to see her, where she was remembering all the things of her youth, and thinking she was still that age. He did a fantastic job with describing it.
Allison 7/25/99 live, where he has to borrow Brian Setzer's guitar is a great live performance. Of course the original video is probably the best to start with .
Dude the african women in the background of this song and in the music video add such a strong contrast and are honestly one of the best parts of this really adds a feel can't describe the feel but it is there.
Yes Punch the Clock has become my favorite Elvis Costello record along with Get Happy and King of America. The work of Afrodiziak backing Elvis and the Attractions is one of the records finest points.
One of the backing singers was Caron Wheeler, featured on Soul II Sou's hits Back to Life and Keep on Movin'. Had a few hits in her own right. All worth listening to.
He's an incredibly under rated lyricist. His turn of phrase, acerbic humourous comments and observations are second to none. That track comes from the album 'Punch The Clock', every track a gem, to say no fillers would be tales of the obvious as he never does them. If I had to narrow it down (because I would recommend every track on it) to only one track for you to react to it'd be 'Ship Building' - a beautiful composition again with a lot of hidden/twisted meaning in the lyrics.
Elvis Costello is one of the great songwriters of the last 40 years. You should try some of his classics like Two Little Hitlers, My Aim Is True, Watching the Detectives, Oliver's Army, Imperial Bedroom are some oldies from the 70s. great music but SO MUCH to choose from!
Now you must do the entire Joe Jackson “Look Sharp” album Love me some Elvis Costello, he’s a genius, brilliant. But that single Koe Jackson album was played at EVERY party- Punkers, New Wavers, Metalheads, Every clique of music loved that album. Very Blues/Jazz type vibe All stories “Is She Really Going Out With Him” and the title track are great starts along with “Stepping’ Out” beautiful soulful piano in that one
The actors in the relationship were portraying Princess Diana and Prince (now King) Charles. Somehow, Elvis Costello knew that the relationship wouldn't end well.
Interesting tidbit: Caron Wheeler from Soul II Soul (“Keep On Moving”, “Back To Life”) is one of the backup singers (on the right). I would say this song came out 5 or 6 years before Soul II Soul came into existence.
Always loved the song.. I had never seen the video and the Princess Di and Prnce Charles lookalikes were hysterical and also sad because of the tragic death of Princess Di
Thank you for doing another EC song....much appreciated!!! Can I suggest 'What's so Funny about Peace, Love, and & Understanding' or Veronica 'a heartbreaker about his grandmother'. He's been writing and performing since the 70's, and he's still awesome. A true talent that dabbles in all kinds of music.
Check out Oliver's Army. He wrote that song while in line at a checkpoint waiting to get to Belfast for a gig and saw all the young Army men. Great song about a dark subject with a totally upbeat sound.
The couple in the video were imitating Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Great song choice from Elvis Costello. Check out songs Alison and Pump it up.
Fun fact...he was married to Cait O’Riordan. She was at one time the bassist for THE POGUES. Costello also produced The Pogues 2nd album, “Rum Sodomy & the Lash” (1985)
For the harsher side of Elvis Costello's work check out the song "Lipstick Vogue." The lyrics in that song contains the quatrain:"Don't say you love me if it's just a rumor.Don't say you love me if there's any doubt.Sometimes I think that love is just a tumor. You've got to cut it out!!!"
I love to see you fall in love with the artists. The video definitely parodied Prince Charles and Princes Dianna. Elvis Costello is brilliant. This is a song from one of my favorite albums.
That's Caron Wheeler on the right as one of the backup singers who later became one of the lead singers of the group Soul II Soul. React to their song Keep On Movin' please.
I LOVE YOU, JUST FOUND YOU AT PANERA. GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE. A THIRTEEN YEAR WASTE. STARTING OVER IN A NEW SEASON. LOVE THIS SONG, THE MEMORIES. LOVE BREAK DOWN OF SONGS. CAN YOU DO PRINCE AND MICHAEL SONGS PLEASE.
You might like roxy music, classy outfit and big in the 80s. Had big radio hits with More than this, Jealous guy, Love is the drug, Avalon, all classics. Lead singer brian ferry had a few hits on his own, best being lets stick together.
I am a lifelong Elvis Costello fan, please react to his song, "She" if you appreciate his voice and his range of music please react to this song! He is the only artist that has recorded songs under all categories, punk, pop, jazz and classical major labels. His compositions are covered by artists from Johnny Cash to Linda Rondstate. You must hear this song, it's so fulfilling. I pitch it to you because I love your insight and smile. ,
If you like good lyrics, you should delve into Elvis' catalog. He is without a doubt the finest lyricist in the 20th century, although he doesn't get credit for it. This song is a great example of his fluidity with metaphor and simile. How he uses one great pun after another to describe the course of a doomed relationship... it's breathtaking really. And don't doubt that he didn't write the whole thing in ten minutes. His prolific output from 1977 through the 80s and into the 90s was legendary: easily an album a year through that whole stretch. Long been my favorite singer-songwriter ever in the pop space.
This was the first Elvis Costello song I ever heard--I think it was on MTV the first time I heard it. Of course, though the song is timeless the video is quite dated.

Yes. This!

Yes pls!😉
I don't mean to be a Costello snob but it is spelled Alison
Yaaaassssss
Man...
I hate to see or hear about other people's pain. Doesn't seem fair.
Dude the african women in the background of this song and in the music video add such a strong contrast and are honestly one of the best parts of this really adds a feel can't describe the feel but it is there.

Elvis Costello is such an amazing songwriter.
Soooo underated
"Pump it up" by Elvis Costello
He's a musical genius, that looks just like Buddy Holly.
Actors in the video are lookalikes for Prince Charles and Princess Dianna.
Oh shit i just noticed that
It’s kind of distracting if you ask me. Just the band and maybe the silent movie would have been enough.
Some producers got “creative.” 🙄
One of the backing singers was Caron Wheeler, featured on Soul II Sou's hits Back to Life and Keep on Movin'. Had a few hits in her own right. All worth listening to.

You'd narrow it down to the only song he DIDN'T write?????
How can such a revered musician and lyricist, be underrated?
@@ghostdog7575 He wrote the lyrics to Shipbuilding. Good lord.
I absolutely love Elvis Costello music. Congrats on being the first reviewer that I've seen giving him a chance.

Love this song. Thank you India.
The lyrics are poetry.
Elvis Costello is the real king.
Now you must do the entire Joe Jackson “Look Sharp” album
Love me some Elvis Costello, he’s a genius, brilliant.
But that single Koe Jackson album was played at EVERY party-
Punkers, New Wavers, Metalheads, Every clique of music loved that album.
Very Blues/Jazz type vibe
All stories
“Is She Really Going Out With Him” and the title track are great starts along with “Stepping’ Out” beautiful soulful piano in that one
"Even in a perfect world, where everyone is equal, I would still hold all the film rights and be working on the sequel..."

Interesting tidbit: Caron Wheeler from Soul II Soul (“Keep On Moving”, “Back To Life”) is one of the backup singers (on the right). I would say this song came out 5 or 6 years before Soul II Soul came into existence.
The other woman is the late Claudia Fontaine who was also a member of Soul II Soul and a backing singer for many other UK artists.
Nice. This was the first single i bought back in 83. I was 15.
You had good taste.
I saw Elvis at Sunderland Empire on Tuesday and he was amazing. even at 65, he was performing long after younger singers would have left the stage.
not that old.See Jagger
I freaking love this song!!!
Always loved the song.. I had never seen the video and the Princess Di and Prnce Charles lookalikes were hysterical and also sad because of the tragic death of Princess Di
Ahhh the other Elvis ! So many great songs, I think Elvis Costello is so underrated it's crazy...♡
That's the ONLY ELVIS!!!😎🤘
"I Want You," off his "Blood & Chocolate" album, might be one of the most bitter songs ever written.
The greatest song about sexual jealousy that I've ever heard!
What a fantastic groovy song. Great island/Caribbean /African influences mixed in with a little punk/new wave seasoning.
Yes, you're right.
If you liked Bruce Thomas' bass line on this one check out "B Movie" off their Get Happy!! record.
Veronica is my favorite by him, always gives me chills. Happy sounding song but so damn sad when you realize what he is singing about.
One of my favorite EC songs.
love elvis Costello,,especially older stuff. I don't want to go to Chelsea, this years girl, little triggers, need I go on
This is the first EC song I have memory of hearing (on MTV way back in the day). It pulled me in and I have been a huge fan ever since.
This cut has been a soulful classic for the past 37 years...👍🔥😎
Great reaction to a fantastic performer and singer. Red Shoes, She, Olivers Army, A Good Year For the Roses , etc etc, The list goes on and on.
I love the piano in this.
That album that he collaborated with Bert Bacharch is one of my favorites. Elvis is a great artist.
Painted From Memory

Bonus points unlocked for selecting awesome song.
Check out Oliver's Army. He wrote that song while in line at a checkpoint waiting to get to Belfast for a gig and saw all the young Army men. Great song about a dark subject with a totally upbeat sound.
My favorite Elvis Costello song.
One of my favorite videos of all time. Song is excellent. Thanks!
Your smile watching this makes me happy.
I love your reaction to my favorite artist. I would bear in mind that the music was made without the video in mind.
Also from this album Let Them Talk and The Sweetest Thing relatively happy songs from Elvis.
I love Elvis Costello... my favourite song of his is called “She”. It gets me every time.
Love Costello! Great lyricist!
to give you encourgement to do this listen to this first. I think he is worth the listen!
Yes! More Elvis. "What's so Funny 'Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding"
The 1st time I heard this song... I luv'd it.
Honestly, after my last post, I'd love you to do "Veronica " first, the video version.
another good one is What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding
The couple in the video were imitating Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Great song choice from Elvis Costello. Check out songs Alison and Pump it up.
Charles and Di living their best life.
Romance. We all understand it when it happens to us. And when isn't it glorious?
The first 4 albums are all great . Every song
Fun fact...he was married to Cait O’Riordan. She was at one time the bassist for THE POGUES. Costello also produced The Pogues 2nd album, “Rum Sodomy & the Lash” (1985)
I used to know that - then I forgot.
If you haven't RUclipsd Cait O'Riordan doing an impromptu
version of "I'm a Man You don't Meet
Every Day on RTE Radio, please do it now.
That Def Leppard sweatshirt is DOPE
This song is a bop and you’re just adorable.
Such a strange turn for him to take, but I liked it when it came out...
Yeah a good song, pretty poppy though. I love almost everything he did before this
@@kevtruth it's a pity artists like this don't write pop stuff anymore.
LOVE this song. "Alison" too.

Great bass line!
Is that Caron Wheeler from Soul to Soul in the background!!??? Check out their song "Keep on Moving" if you get a chance.
I think it is, yes.
She and the other backing singer appeared in a few videos for other artists in the early/mid-80s.
Yes😎
Try 'Pump It Up' or 'Shipbuilding"
Oh man, definitely Shipbuilding
+1 to Shipbuilding, also She
That's Caron Wheeler on the right as one of the backup singers who later became one of the lead singers of the group Soul II Soul. React to their song Keep On Movin' please.
Saw them on tour supporting this album. Unique combo of not only being a great songwriter, but also being a clever lyricist.
Yes, listen to Allison. Steve
Nice. I know you posted this years ago. I just came across it today. Try When I was Cruel by Elvis Costello. A few gems in that album.
Bruce Thomas is a helluva bass player. Mad respect. Too bad they just can't get along, but I get it.
Please review " So Like Candy" by Elvis Costello
I'll give you the link but don't listen to it until you react! I love your channel. If it's worth a mention I am a 60 year old man from Montana
This year's girl.
You might like roxy music, classy outfit and big in the 80s.

I love your account!
How about ‘Watching the Detectives’?
She did that one yesterday ☺
The video is just genius. Prince Charles is trying to win his wife's love, but Princess Di is having none of it Just like in real life.

I dunno re finest there's stiff competition ie Bob Dylan, Larry Norman, even Joe Jackson just for starters
❤❤❤👋👋👋👍👍
This was the first Elvis Costello song I ever heard--I think it was on MTV the first time I heard it. Of course, though the song is timeless the video is quite dated.
Try the song, Blame it on Cain, or Lipstick Vogue.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana as regular people living in an apartment instead of a Palace... great story
The Epitome of Cool?....= Elvis Costello
“Even in a perfect world
Where everyone was equal,
I’d still own the film rights
And be workin’ on the sequel “
His real name is Declan McManus, btw.
'New Amsterdam' and 'I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down'
check out Nick Lowe too
Can I request Patty Griffin - Tony?
There's a great, fairly recent live version of this with Ron Sexsmith on youtube. Check it out.
Check out Elvis Costello - she. 👍
What is the name of the song what open your video?
He looked like Mel Brooks holding the 15 Commandments...
You should check out "Oliver's Army" which is probably Elvis Costello's best song (just a heads up - it does contain the N-Word)
If you like his voice, you should listen to his cover of the song "She".
His voice has gotten even better with age.
Notice the couple looked like Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
His wife, Diana Krall, is an amazing artist/singer as well. Sultry jazz/lounge/piano stuff that rivals Julie London
obviously, you can feel my passion for this artist, but please react to Elvis Costello "She" I so much respect your opinion, Cheers and love Dave
he spent 20 years studying music to write it in 10 minutes!
Seriously though, react to What's so Funny by Elvis!
That was supposed to portray Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
