I love ya Manny! That C3 Shot Results Preview is a life saver! I used to have to take the Profoto Air remote completely off the hotshoe just to see how much I wanted to underexpose ambient light...Even turning off the remote off would not work, It had to be removed! Thanks so much!

AEL - Eye AF, Same. Use it on every shoot in that same spot. BUT THAT C3 RATING!!!! I do that exact same setup, and then if a model on set mentions they like anything it helps SOOOO much when youre picking images later.
Some others that I use is back button focusing on the AEF button, and for C1 I have zebras (and then my center button is peaking if I need it for MF), and C2 toggles between MF and AF. When Im using video mode, I switch C1 to toggle super 35 mode so i can pop in a quick zoom when working with video if im shooting 1080 and have a prime lens on.
My focus area is the left buttom, focus mode is C4, and a big one that helped me is putting ISO on the control wheel. That way it's just a quick flick of that wheel to change my iso instead of a 2 button click in the menu.

Browsing a few different videos about settings for my Sony camera. Just spent a few minutes checking all custom settings capabilities and was frustrated to see I couldn't put e-Front Curtain into the Function menu. Then I click on this video. I set up my wheel to be my ISO. I love this feature and makes changing ISO crazy fast for me. I also added Format to my favorites/custom menu.

I shoot with an A7RIII and really only have one thing on my wish list. I wish that when auto review was turned on you could choose to have the image come up automatically zoomed in to check focus. But my settings match yours for everything else! Great video. :)

the image preview tip helped me out. i did not know that this feature existed. i was frustrated having to always turn of my trigger to check my exposure. just a tip that simple made my life a lot easier. lol
I actually just set mine up more like yours (for stills) because of this. I had C1 - White balance, C2 - Focus area, C3 - Focus mode, and C4 - SteadyShot length. Now C1 and C2 are focus area and mode, C3 is silent shutter, and C4 is still SteadyShot length (main portrait lens is a Nikon 80-200 f/4). Video C1 and C2 are the same as stills, C3 is Picture Profile, and C4 is recording level.
Manny, I'm so glad a found your channel a little while back. I bought my 14 year old daughter a (a)6000 with kit lenses. I'm having a blast playing around with it. I shot Canon way back like in the film days. I plan on getting myself an a7iii and a nice 85mm lense in May for my birthday. I love all your content and tips that you share. Keep being amazing. Manny, you can change the type of shutter with a custom button. page 12/20 on the A7RIII (and A7III) has the option of Silent Shooting. This can be assigned a button.

Your channel convinced me to get a A7III + 85 Gmaster!
I have essentially the same custom settings. So, for using eye-auto detect for portraits that mix ambient and strobe I press the AEL (eye AF), the C3 (ambient exposure), and the shutter to take the picture. And while C3 and AEL are held pressed I can’t scroll the shutter speed dial. Doing Yoga helps. Seriously it all works great but Sony could help a little with a simple firmware update that would ADD MENU OPTION for: ON/OFF live view while flash remote in mounted and powered on; set EYE AFC to shutter button ON/OFF option.
I also set multiple different back button focus modes. I stay in AF-C all the time but sometimes I need the contrast af that you only get in af-s. So my joystick click-in is set to reg custom shooting mode where it simply changes from AF-C to af-s but keeps all the other settings the same including the focus point. I also have a "snapshot button" which is the center button on dpad. It is another reg custom shooting mode and I set it to wide af, f/5.6, auto iso, auto ss, and to initiate af. I use that primarily for events or for oops moments where I need the shot quickly but don't have time to switch settings.

Seriously Manny, thank you so much for pointing this out. I do a lot of interior property photography, and have always been switching my trigger off to get the right exposure for the outside when using flash.

Wow that's such a thoughtful use of the rating button. Thank you! Edit: I too wish they had better options for the electronic shutter. Fuji has the option to set it up better. 30seconds to 1/ 800 electronic first curtain, 1/1000-1/8000 mechanical only, 1/10,000 and up electronic.

Did you know of the Shot result preview feature in these cameras? It’s a lifesaver if you use flash! (I learned this trick through Rob Hall on RUclips)

To remedy the search for e-front curtain on/off, I've added it to my custom menus at the end, along with some other frequently used settings.
Do not use the E- Shutter! It cuts off the light. U can take Test Pictures and watch the Histogram. You will see that the Range from E mode isn´t full but the one with mechanical is full range.

Great video! :-) I have also set WB - sometimes I do not like auto WB. And I love ISO AUTO Min. SS feature. I usually set it to faster and do not care too much about focal lengths until I have very bad light conditions, then I can change it sometimes. I know the shutter will be set well :-)

The upcoming firmware update for the A7RIII/A7III/A9 focus system is going to be awesome. Continuous Eye AF and subject face tracking without having to press a button! ❤️
That's gonna be a game changer for portraits! Supposedly will work much better in low light too. We will see come April when it's released for the RIII.

Hey Manny! For 35mm, 50mm and 85mm what f stop do you use for portraits? For single or couple or for group pics? I find 1.4 or 1.8 would be too shallow DOF so i use 2.2 and below. Im curious on what settings on the exposure triangle you use, with or without flash?

Hi, if silent shuting = electronic shutter you can setup a shortcut to silent shuting in function menu.

Hi Manny, great video as always! I’m shooting with an A7RIII and have been having trouble with auto focus where it’s randomly unresponsive and even eye auto focus won’t work. I’m shooting in a studio using back button focus, flash, 85mm and 70-200 (both G Master) with plenty of ambient light, and I’m wondering if you’ve had a similar issue. I’m guessing there’s a problem with the camera. Any advice?

Man, this is just a day late for me. I went to the Sony BeAlpha event in Orlando last night. Had no real experience with Sony menus and it was a challenge to find some of the things that I know by heart on my Nikon. Overall, it was a very frustrating experience and definitely didn't sell me on using Sony. AF just wasn't what I expected and never did get the Eye AF feature that everyone talks about.

But man, as long as I'm not shooting a model, the AFS with Wide focus area of my A7III f**ks me up almost every time. The camera would lock on to the most ridiculous place in the frame 7 out of 10 times...

How do you toggle between Wide and Spot area??? i've tried setting a custo button to toggle but it always fails when going back and forth from spot
Cool. Only one we have in common is eye Af on AEL button. I still can't believe you don't use a battery grip. So much more comfortable than holding the camera vertically and getting chicken wing arms to reach your shutter button haha.
