Qualifying is an issue for low or lower income unmarried adults. These folks are last in line. i’m not saying that families with children shouldn’t come first. i’m a firm believer that no child should hungry, especially in this country. But there are so many elderly in this country who are low income but not low enough income to qualify for the vast majority of programs.

The government has set the poverty level so low I don’t see how a person could even afford a place to live. I am 70 years old and live on Social Security since my husband passed away and I don’t qualify for anything yet after I pay my bills I don’t even have money for groceries. I find is disgraceful that our government taxes us Americans to death and then we can’t qualify for help but they give millions to illegals. Our system is broken for sure.

Medicaid in Missouri is no longer free - they lowered the income limits to $1250 monthly. Anyone making over$1250 monthly has to pay monthly premiums starting at $104 monthly.
Ridiculous because if you make $1250 monthly, all that is eaten up with rent and utility bills so there is no money left over to buy food, yet we're forced to pay premiums.

The thing that is bad about Food Stamps in MO is that even if you are very low-income, you can't get food stamps if you have too many assets. The asset limits are way too low, in my opinion. You can be a senior citizen living on $806 a month from Social Security, but you still don't qualify for food stamps.

If you work hard your whole life, save money and plan for the future, but fall on hard times and need help - the government will bankrupt you before you get a dime in assistance. But if you are "poor" your whole life, you get government assistance from day-1, within the guidelines for qualifying.

I agree. Health insurance imo should be universal for all Americans like it is in most countries. A fully trained doctor in the Philippines earns $500/mo USD. If the US allowed lots of tested doctors into the US costs would fall a lot. I the US allowed people to retire to foreign countries and still be covered our cost would drop. So universal healthcare could cost the gov less than currently costs today.

Believe me, if you live in Texas you get nothing.
They claim I make to much money. Of course by the time I pay rent, Medicare part A& B , $ 500+ 26 for part d car insurance, I have about 40 month for groceries, meds and everything else. I’m 80+ years old.
My ceiling has leaked and has poured into my apartment, the owner won’t fix it
I am not physically able to pack everything up and don’t have the money to move.
My advice is if you’re old Don’t live in Texas
fall9:49 They are doing their best to kill off the elderly trying to force me out so they can charge government outrageous prices to another fool.

My mom lives in Washington State and pays per mile of driving or something. There is also the non collectible status for income taxes. I think you eventually need to pay but you can defer it. According to the senior citizens videos I have watched the IRS cannot collect retirement or disability but do your research.

A side note, in Wisconsin getting $1300 on disability a month and renting at $410/month starting Nov. '24. I looked into the USDA Rural Development program and was told I might get 60-70k. How would that get me a fair quality home in any time let alone now? All I wanted was to stop renting, get a home on some land or at least a small town home an a small lot. Most homes in that range wouldn't qualify due to needed repairs or if they qualified, but were properties that haven't had a well or septic installed or electric in some cases(usually vacant land) adding expense to them.

You can have both but many providers trick you into using both benefits toward the same service so they get more money. According to the government website, "If you currently receive a Lifeline benefit, you automatically qualify for the ACP, and you can receive both benefits at the same time. You can apply your ACP benefit and your Lifeline benefit to the same or separate services." -Nicole

Actually the hospital & doctors only get a very small portion of the bill. In Illinois when I first started working in a hospital. For example if you have a $100 bill the hospital got $15 from Medicaid. That’s why hospitals struggle so much. Especially in an area with most on Medicaid.
