To all those asking, "What's wrong with asking where someone is from"? There is nothing wrong with asking the question and accepting the answer.... "But" when you choose to ignore the person's answer and bagger them with further questions about their nationality.... you are not only being rude but clueless to your own prejudice.

I feel a lot of people are super sensitive and I 100% believe the older lady was never intending to be racist. Come on man. Do you ("Ngozi") really feel such a need to have the attention on you. I've had black people ask me that because I apparently sound British and yet I'm not upset. I just respond to their question, help them right and that's it. An 83 year old lady was forced to resign. @@avidnongetit8710 i firmly believe that the only way to become a billionaire is through the exploitation of people less fortunate than you, and doing irreparable damage to ecosystems. Sadly, there's no such thing as an 'ethical' billionaire, without blood on their hands.
As someone who is half Asian and looks ethically ambiguous, getting that question repeatedly was soo exhausting. It felt like people were like “you don’t quite fit the picture of what we think someone traditionally looks like. It got waaaaaay better when I moved to California bc Asians and Latinx are everywhere and looking ethnically ambiguous is not unusual. I can’t even remember a time I got asked that while in California. Also, asking about someone’s nationality is irrelevant bc if you’re born in Britain, you’re British. Beyond that, many black people don’t know their ethnicity bc they were taken as slaves hundreds of years ago and their history wasn’t even documented.
Actually I think there is one legit reason to start this line of questions, but it is easier to just ask what is really interesting:
"What unique things to eat do you know and can I taste that stuff around here?"
Maybe extends to "is it worth flying there to taste it?" if no local possibilities exist...

I've started replying to those questions honestly. Now I just say, "Don't ask dumb questions", "don't be rude" etc. Honestly wish I hadn't been so generous with those people in the past cause I never realized the racist undertones as a kid.

THAT action alone already set the tone for what she was doing - coupled with the several opportunities she had to basically move on. It's not just blacks who are treated as foreigners in their own country. Almost all 'Asians' constantly get asked 'where are you really from' and even when they say they are born in the USA/UK they are pressed 'but where are your parents/people from' because they don't look European-white.
It's like if you don't look like a white person, you can’t be from a European country.
Personally I think poeple are just over sensitive to that, she obviously just means what her ancestry is, she just didn't use the right words.

I did not like this show before and it took me a while to start liking it again because I had to watch to truly understand the reality of the show. And you brought that meaningful understanding in such a comical way of course however needless to say it was issues that need to be brought up and I truly appreciate that. I'm excited to see your next Journey and I believe wherever that's going to be or what that's going to look like it's going to be amazing. I hope that you have a talk show somewhere in your journey because you're great at interviewing folks, where people feel comfortable to talk to you and not afraid to be transparent at the same time.

I have to correct you on this one. There is no dialect of the african language because there is NO AFRICAN LANGUAGE . (the caps are just to get noticed, not yelling at you) Africa has countries, those countries have many different languages, those languages have dialects.

he can speak some xhosa if i recall from other daily show content, but I'm pretty sure he is mocking ignorant white people doing bad imitations of what xhosa sounds like to them with mumbling deep mm, hitting a b or two, and just way more "clicks" than I've ever heard in actual xhosa, and then my suspicions are strengthened by the reference of an old comedy set in Africa that was shown/popular internationally, kinda doing a caricature of the shallow depth of knowledge and eagerness to demonstrate it that westerners often seem to exhibit
but that's my conjecture from learning a lot of languages and doing transcription work, plus studying comedy heh... could be confirmed by anyone who knows enough xhosa to recognize whether or not it sounds even plausible - but it feels like he's hamming it up here to me

I have the same issue in the US actually. “Where are you really from?”
Hurray for the advice about the end on avoiding the use of the word FROM! As a white person who was born in the U.S. but spent most of my adult life in South and Southeast Asia, including 10 years in Sri Lanka and 9 years here in Thailand, whose ideas about dress, religion, and food tend to be Asian but about work, human rights, and technology tend to be Western, I also hate this question. Chiang Mai has so many foreign resident Western people who have lived here 10, 20, 30 years or more, yet the first question people ask me is generally not "What is your name?" or "What do you do?" but "Where are you from?" When I answer, "I live here," many people won't accept it and keep on persistently asking, and it so annoys me. And it was even worse in Sri Lanka, where I deliberately dyed my hair with black henna and wore head covering (since the only Sri Lankan ethnic group which I could physically pass as was Muslim). What I most hate is when people ask where I'm from before even asking my name or what I do, which are the polite questions to begin a conversation with someone, as if my race were the only important aspect about me and more important than my individual personality, my work, or my education.

I am French living in the USA and I am being asked all the time, the moment I open my mouth. I am a US citizen and been here for 25 years but still they insist, and they obviously are curious about my family heritage.
My kids are born in the US and don’t get asked as much because they don’t have an accent, but when they are in France, they get asked!

@@Goubigoudi it’s a cultural thing, not color or race. Americans know that I am not ‘really’ an American and it is not a color thing, and they are right, I do not share their culture entirely.
This story relates to me because I have been clumsy in the same way with people looking Asian or African, Latinos etc, I asked ‘where are you from’ and got a bit annoyed when they said ‘from the US’ and stop there: it should be obvious that I am curious about their cultural heritage and the proper response is something like: I am born and raised in the US, as well as my parents, so we are really from a US culture but prior to that there are some “whatever” roots in our ancestry, but unfortunately I have no connection with this culture (or you do, then tell a little story about it). There we go, everybody’s happy.
