      Jake McCoy that's why you should never take your car to a shop if you want it to still be running, and save thousands of dolors. I'm sure he didn't strip it. Probably you, or some other nut job before him tightened the bolt too tight. That bolt should only be snug, never tighten it too much. Different shops use the cheapest oil and oil filter to rob you and make you come back sooner. If you don't know how to change oil, which every person with a car should know these basics at the beginning. Always bring your own oil filter and watch them put it on to make sure they do and oil as well. Some scam shops don't even change the oil or filter so take a marker and make a mark on the filter before you take it to get it changed and see if they actually do. Hope this little trick helps out

      you want the coldest air possible, it is more dense so in turn it combusts better. the further away from the warm engine the air is sucked in the colder it is. Because the engine bay warms up as you drive your performance would decrease if you sucked in warm air from the engine bay. that's why people install cold air intakes on their vehicles. and it's not manufacturers looking to get more money out of you, they're trying to maximize the performance of your car.
      just don't drive through water, you're in a car not a boat.

    • @flackyoue7483

    • @roborovsky6950
      @roborovsky6950 8 лет назад +9

      He's annoying and usually speak shit. The resonator box is located there. There is a duct going from the air filter box to the resonator box in the fender ,and from the resonator there is another duct coming up right under the bonnet ,usually near an opening near the headlight. So it works like this : Fresh air gets sucked in the duct , goes to the resonator box , then to the air filter box and then to the intake.

    • @CazRaX
      @CazRaX 8 лет назад +5

      +HotNoob It's a slight performance thing, let's the engine take in cold air from closer to the ground and also makes it easier to get air because of the drag and amount of air moving at that level. Makes sense on the Celica which is a sports car but not on the 300, there it was a stupid decision.

Fortunately, I waited for the water to go down into the sewer before driving out of there safely. I will never do that again to my car. +undefinablereasoning Pretty much that. If the intake is positioned any higher or closer to the center of the engine then it'll just be sucking in hot air from the engine. This will cause a loss of power and bad mpg.

    • @TristanVash38
      @TristanVash38 7 лет назад +3

      To add on to the other commentators, it's more efficient for the engine due to colder air being more dense. Denser air means more oxygen. More oxygen with fuel in a stroke = more power
      Depending on the tune of the vehicle and type and age, it varies, but there are differences between summer driving (less dense, hotter air, less oxygen per stroke) and winter driving (my personal favorite - more dense, cold air, more oxygen per stroke). Enjoying your channel, Mr. Kilmer!

      its to suck in colder air which enhances combustion thus increasing a little bit in horsepower. A good way to prevent hydrolocking or blowing your engine is to install a good hydro shield which is about 20 bucks or so, and to install a AEM air bypass valve (40-50$) which eliminates almost all possibility of this happening William Ross Scotty Kilmer

      The air filter in the 300C, which uses the 5.7 hemi, is near the top of the engine. I think the person was lying about how deep the water was. Yes it gets its air from the fender well but there are also air paths in front of the headlights and radiator baffle.

Although a mechanic managed to somehow make the engine run again, it started to to consume engine oil like crazy. Turned out it bent a conrod. It's a miracle that it could still run. In the end had to fully overhaul the engine and rebore because the bent rod scratched the cylinder surface.

    I go through water every spring when the spring floods arrive. I modified my vehicle with a water fording kit. It is not uncommon for me to be pushing peddles under water. Instead of buying things for a vehicle that most other people purchase, like a fancy stereo, DVD player, navigation system, heated seats, amplifiers, sub woofers, televisions and the such, I got tired of missing a lot of work in the spring and winter and purchased an engine snorkel, a waterproof spark computer enclosure, components to waterproof my instrument cluster, check valves for axle and transmission vents, extended vertical exhaust pipe that is removable, and a nylon vehicle interior. The region I reside is very hot in summer, very cold and with deep snow in the winter, and very flooded in spring. I just modified my vehicle to become near unstoppable. It is much uglier after the modifications, but she has never let me down and has helped many, as well as myself. I just wish it did not look like some sort of zombie apocalypse vehicle or retired military vehicle.

    I can't think of any good reason for a car to have its air intake so low to the ground. Seems like a huge flaw that could be easily fixed by just having the intake ... anywhere else like behind the grill or something. Why is it designed that way?

    • @private2809
      @private2809 6 лет назад

      Colder air near the ground compared to within the engine bay (colder air is better for performance), also more aerodynamic and less expensive (I presume on the expense) than installing a snorkel for every car manufactured, many of which will never experience flood waters.

    • @ConGie
      @ConGie 10 лет назад +1

      professorbland In my opinion that would be a horrible idea. You could easily do it but if water is getting in the engine compartment you're likely to short out which will cause problems with the ignition system. One way or another your vehicle will stop moving. At the very least you could fit a cold air intake that sits within the engine bay and is just shrouded to prevent the heat coming off the engine from reaching the intake. Then you would only have to worry about the water's depth instead of whether or not the water will splash up in the wheel well and get sucked in. That's as good is it gets.

      You shouldn't be driving in water even a few inches high. That's how people get stranded and have to be rescued.

      If it's water that's moving, anyway. You cannot accurately judge the height (or potential rise) of the water.

      Right, so then find your air intake. He's teaching a man to fish with this video, not just giving them instructions on a model by model basis that will be outdated within a year.

    I was stuck in a traffic jam in a 92 Corolla with the water covering the tires completely almost at the doors handles, and it is true that the starter suffered and a few months later the starter and the alternator (that is rather low) had to be replaced, the car made it never stalled and kept going like a champ.

    Sounds like crappy design. My subaru sucks air in from just below the hood, I can't imagine sucking air straight from the ground! Not to say that everything is designed well on it.

    So don't drive in the rain then, right?

    • @Lessinath
      @Lessinath 8 лет назад +6

      No, that's OK to do (of course). It really takes a lot of water fast to do this, as long as the engine is ingesting mostly air it won't have a problem. The problem is if you hit that point, you'll go from having no problem to having big problems very fast. If you're not driving through deep puddles, you shouldn't have a problem.

      I was just looking for this comment haha. But I was surprised in his case because Mercedes normally puts the air intakes at the top (near the hood release lock), so he must have gone though a hell of a lot of water..... I don't know, there's something he's not admitting to lol

    Easy fix. Get a cold air intake that stays at the top of the engine just away from it.

      Oh you mean a hot air intake?

      No a cold air intake

    • @Hole_Motorsports
      @Hole_Motorsports 8 лет назад +17

      xTRPN If it doesn't have a box around it or a ram outside of the engine bay its a hot air intake.

    • @xTRPN
      @xTRPN 8 лет назад +1

      There's no such thing as a hot air intake. Why would you want even hotter air going into your engine that's stupid. There is Cold Air Intake and a short ram intake. And Cold air intakes don't need to have a box around them for cold air. Short ram stays near the motor. Cold air intakes are away from it.

    • @Hole_Motorsports
      @Hole_Motorsports 8 лет назад +13

      xTRPN Its a joke. A CAI that sits in the engine bay without an airbox around it just sucks in hot air from the engine bay.

    That's why old carb engines with the round air filter on top are so great. We drove ours through deep water the other day, stayed dry as a bone.

    Lol what a shit car. My air intake is right under the hood. Why would they build one under the fender??? Here in Vegas at least, when it rains even 0.35 inches, you're gonna be driving through some water that reaches above that point.

  • @jnichols3
    @jnichols3 5 лет назад +1

    There is a section of road that routinely floods that I driven through many times in different vehicles, as does others who live there. Never a problem until the first time I drove my Challenger through it. That will be the last time. Fortunately the car did not flood. The water was not deep enough, but the engine took a drink. First thing I did whe I got the car back with its new engine was order a cold air intake. I do not plan to drive through water again, but there are still deep puddles that are unavoidable. I do not want to alter the original airbox. If I trade in the car in a few years down the road, I will be putting back in, but another solution that might work is to drill 3 or 4 one inch holes in the filter box with a hole saw bit just below the filter (before the filter). Normal driving most of the air will still come from low down in the fender, but should you accidently drive through some water the holes might keep enough vacuum from being created to suck up water. I will be putting my stock box on a shelf, and use a cold air intake while I own it. Trade-in time, and the stock box goes back in. BTW, Pentastars before labor are around $8000.
