uhmm. help? im first .. oh god the pressure.. hi mom!
I love Alex's ingenuity at being cheap and also getting Linus to pay for it if his plan doesn't work. I wish i was that clever
That's not ingenuity nor clever, it is just opportunistic! Alex taking advantage of LTT money like "I don't care, not my money" makes me sick. If I was Linus, I will sell the monitor to him full retail price, so he learn not to scam people for his own interest.
@@TimeFlyBy Calm down. It's not that serious and besides because Alex wanted a cheap monitor, Linus got a video out of it. It's probably going to bring in way more money than what the monitor is worth
@@TimeFlyBy The proletariat Alex outsmarts the bourgeoisie Linus
@@TimeFlyBy if Linus did NOT make a video out of this monitor and also have Alex showing in the video then monetize it with ads. It's a win-win situation, why call it a scam? Alex give an idea of fixing a broken monitor (because he works for Linus, it's his job), he also works on ordering and researching and participates in the fixing process, not just Linus. How can you sell it with a full retail price after everything he's done? BTW, be realistic, it's actual Linus's money and whether this monitor could be fixed or not, he could earn some money from the video, so Alex say "I don't care, not my money" is acceptable although it sounds a little rude, but regard to their relationship in LTT Media Group, they seem to have a good friendship so the way he says that is just OK
@@TimeFlyBy I certainly hope this is trolling. Linus has praised Alex's value to LTT on multiple occasions, and values his employees. This is an extension of that, and a way to generate content. The authoritarian boss isn't one that keeps people around. I certainly hope you're not in charge of anyone with the way your tone read from your comment.
A make your own monitor video sounds really interesting, I would love to see that.
Phil N there are tons of driver boards on Taobao, for dirt cheap even.
Especially dual driver setups with high resolutions and refresh rates but HDR and freesync 2 may be a bit of a stretch for that kind of setup. Also maybe a way bigger panel than ordinary gaming monitors but response times for those panels may not be optimal.
Built my own twice. Made a nice wood case for one, with a 1366x768 LG panel from a rekt laptop, hangs on the wall. Made another handly handheld one out of a little 800x600 digital picture frame I found busted in a parking lot. Even has built in speakers. Used LVDS/flatlink adapter boards from eBay and other scrap parts. Pretty straightforward.

I just made 26210 $ by selling 141 fixed monitors.
Been repairing TVs and monitors for years. Plenty of places do this. It's not going to affect the prices at all.
I mean… Alex using LTT to supply him with computer parts like his Monitor is actually really smart. This is actually the kind of thing that a budget-oriented gamer would consider doing, making it an interesting and valid video for the channel, while ALSO allowing Luke to use LTT’s funding to acquire his toys, so long as his idea works. And, let’s face it. In the case of this project, Ad Revenue ALONE on this video probably paid for it even if they broke it.
You know the channel is legit when the repairs are done in the kitchen
*After LTT uploaded this video, Ebay took a full plastic surgery on the used broken monitors section.*

He wouldn't fire him after spending that much money on him.
Alex does not a good job solo but on these builds and repairs Alex fits right in!!!! firing him is dumb he makes good videos just not solo
I don't follow Linus so I don't know what their relationship is like but can see that Linus isn't really happy with that guy. Especially the part where he says he was gonna buy the monitor from Linus. And when it worked he did a woohoo and Linus' face after he kinda mocked that woohoo.

15:35 lol his new monitor perched precariously on the edge there... good video. Funny that everything went up in cost after it haha.

Linus should make a video testing if his bath water improves water cooling, he'd make a killing.
should make the diy related things a series: AIY: Alex It Yourself
I wish Linus would actually read it. Giving the employees some space of their own and their creativity would be great, with their own little series that contribute to the channel. I'd really love to see someone like Anthony going balls to the wall with Linux, for instance. All that software-nerd stuff :).
@@IngwiePhoenix That would be good, but they would still have to get the budget approved by Linus.... And he would want to supervise his money being spent. He is REALLY cheap after all....

Linus logic: using the phrase 'talking about" always leads to a smooth and transition
Setting that monitor on the edge like that is a bold move around Linus.
Let just say I was on edge too fearing the worst when I saw they did too.
I guessing he was only allowed to hold his children as babies over a surface of soft pillows
If it falls, he can easily kick it to make it fall gently

You could either win or lose a lottery, it doesn't mean it's a 50% chance
@@nchls1343 it's like on or off
as young sheldon would say: "you confused possibilities with probabilities"
I was gonna write that!
I once had a Viewsonic monitor where the backlight would flicker and randomly turn off. That turned out to be faulty capacitors in the integrated power supply, which luckily is a lot easier to fix than the other parts of a monitor, because you generally don't have surface components in the high voltage parts - you just have to be careful to not short anything in that section. But with the actual panels, as long as you can get a replacement, you just have to be careful to swap it without bending it, cracking the edges of the glass, or damaging the tiny connectors
It's always fun doing these repairs!
Linus is all their sugar daddy. Always be footing the bill for everything.

I got into LTT years ago because I needed help learning to build a custom WC loop. It seems like that DIY material has trickled off a bit over the years in comparison to reviews (excellent), industry news and general (admittedly hilarious) silliness.
But I'd love to see more stuff like this. I love the DIY aspect of electronics, and I really appreciate folks who can help me learn to do stuff. (For instance, I recently tripped over the cord on my out-of-guarantee xps 15 and did some major damage. Instead of ebay-ing it for pennies on the dollar, I just ordered a replacement palmrest and screws and found a guy selling a used AC/DC unit. There's probably a video out there showing me how to do it - but if LTT did one, I'd just feel that much better about the challenge.)
@@mmavcanuck They do get rich off of videos that people want to see though. Consider that.

In my experience, the most common part to fail on a monitor is the power supply. That has proven to be significantly harder to repair/replace than a panel. I'd be very interested to see LTT give it a shot so I can learn. I'm about half way through replacing one of the field effect transistors on the monitor PSU, and my fingers are crossed...

That's pretty awesome! Cool video like always.
Love these kind of videos you guys are doing great
While panel replacement is always worth looking into, it's a good idea to be cautious about picking a panel. You run the risk of having a worse backlight (in the case of panels with integrated backlights), noticeable amounts of dead pixels, worse contrast, and all sorts of other things that the original screen went through a QA process over. When you go to the bottom of the barrel, it's always a toss-up. You might get lucky and get the exact same experience, you might have a mediocre monitor at the end of it that just works, and you might wind up with another dead screen. Could've been surplus output from the same factory, could've been a clone from another factory, or it could be a genuine part that didn't pass QA.
To be clear, I always at least try, but there've been cases where I had to go through two or three screens before a laptop finally looked happy again.
