  • Great memorial this weekend in Wiesbaden. If you get a chance to go on Sunday, go for it. The Candy Drop was so much fun for the kids and you could tell they had worked really hard on getting all those candy parachutes made.
The Berlin Airlift exhibit is inside and is huge!. This was the largest humanitarian effort ever undertaken, and it always amazes me what they did.
Most of the gates are closed to any traffice, so come in through the main gate. Bikes are perfect or take bus 28 from Mainz Kastel.
It is open to the public on Sunday, the 16th. Take cash for the food stands and if you want to buy t-shirts, hats, books, etc.

I had planned to attend today, but after hearing the prices of food and drink, and hearing about the chaos that was trying to get public transportation there, I decided against going. Thank you for your video so I could have a taste of what was there.

I took bus 28 from Mainz Kastel and that worked out ok. Food prices were decent, same as at any fest, but thought 5€ for a drink to be a lot. Had a huge portion of fries with salsa, guacamole and sour cream for 8€.

@@frankfurtonfoottours2361 I would have had to drive in from Taunusstein and then find a place to park for the JFK Str bus pickup. I think the drink prices are what really was the deciding factor on top of the food prices that were reported on some Facebook posts.

@@Poisso3 I took the train from Frankfurt, then waited for at least an hour to get in right when they opened the gate. They were checking bags. My P-38 can opener was considered dangerous, so I left. Have had it since Basic in 1981, so not going to throw it in the trash. That seemed a bit extreme to me.

(Okay, I'm over-commenting on this now, but there's so much to say with this video.) The Berlin Airdrop was one of those bright uplifting moments in history: hope from the skies. =)

I love, love, love talking about the Berlin Airlift and try to at least mention it during every tour.

My autistic nephew could win a trivia contest about WW2 aircraft and machinery. Couldn't tell you names, places, or dates, or other significant facts, but he could probably dismantle one of those airplanes, put it back together and fly it without ever having a lesson. He would love to have been there. (I meant at the exhibit but, honestly, he probably would have loved to have been there in the 1940s.....at least for a few minutes.)
