Photo Montage in St. Leonhard's Church, Frankfurt
St. Leonhards was built in 1219 and is the oldest church in the city center of Frankfurt. Fortunately, it was barely damaged in the war and is a fabulous mix of styles, beginning with the original Romanesque. Every time I go inside, I get this medieval feel of what it might have been like in the middle ages. So, that is the music I picked to go with the photos.
This was and still is, a stop for pilgrims walking to Santiago di Compostella.
This is a Catholic church, with Masses held in German or in English. Open weekdays after 15:00 and on Sat. after 11 and on Sundays when services are over.

New Years' Eve Fireworks in Frankfurt Griesheim, 1.01.2025
Просмотров 165Месяц назад
Germany welcomes the New Year in with Fireworks and the whole country seems to explode for hours. I personally do not buy them and wish that there were only official firework shows. The animals seem to suffer a lot from this and the trash that is left behind in the city to clean up is massive. All of our neighbors cleaned afterwards, so there were no bottles, etc. left on the streets.

    Stationed at Drake-Edwards as young Private 59-61. Agree that buildings at 1:28-1:30 appear to be the end of the 3AD HQ building (nearest the civilian Catholic church at the time) and the ivy covered building appears to be the 3AD Finance Office, and other command offices. If I recall there was a fence just to the right of the Finance Building that marked the boundary of Drake. On the other side of the fence was the Catholic Church. I returned as a Colonel in 1990 as part of preparation to retire the 3AD Flag, as they readied for their move to Iraq. Nostalgia hit as I walked down the street at Edwards, everything still pretty much intact after 29 years recalling those days as a "slick sleeve private" now receiving salutes for the bird on my uniform. The housing unit was several blocks behind Edwards in 59 if I recall. That is where the Snack Bar was located as well as HQ 3D QM, 503d Admin, Signal Battalion, and Medical facility. That's about all I remember of that. The Gym was directly in line, next building down, from the 3D AD Finance & Accounting office. I too was shocked to se D'Angelo's Pizza still there. They were there in 59 if I recall.

    This really brings back memories. I was stationed there from June 1980 to 1883, assigned to 502 Trans Co (MCC), HHC 3rd support Command. I actually worked out of the Abrams Bldg. (IG Farbens Bldg.). I lived in Government Leased Housing on Eulengasse St. (I had to google the street and do a virtual drive through). This really shakes the old cob webs out. You can clearly see that those barracks were built by Prussia since the architecture resembles more the Berlin (Schinkel) style architecture than the local Rhineland architecture.

    The building was built in 1877 as a Prussian military base after Frankfurt was annexed by Prussia in 1866. After Prussia turned into the German Empire, the barracks housed soldiers of the imperial German army, stood empty during the interwar period until it was turned into military barracks again for the Wehrmacht in 1935. After the war it was used from 1952 to 1972 by the western powers.

    Interesting video but it’s not a skyscraper (skyscrapers are higher than 150 meters) and it’s also not Frankfurts first high rise. That title (when you exclude the church towers and town hall towers in the old town) goes to the Mouson tower which was built in 1923.

    • @frankfurtonfoottours2361
      @frankfurtonfoottours2361 9 дней назад

      For the time that it was built, 1951, it had a very different look that other buildings that were taller. I would never compare it to the IG Farben house, which has a huge massive look to it. The Junior house looks sleek and modern, like a skyscraper, even though it is only 9 stories tall. It fits in with the new skyscrapers as other buildings never would.

    I lived on Old Edwards back in the '60s as a kid. We were in Building 563 (as they were numbered back then), which I *think* is the one you showed next to the kindergarten. It was painted pink in those days-all of the buildings in Old Area were colorful and we referred to them that way: pink building, green building, blue building. On Saturdays, parents used to drop kids off for the matinee movie on Drake. For a quarter, we got cartoons, a short film, and the feature ... the parents got peace and quiet. There was a candy store on Homburger Landstrasse called Herr Pfeffer's that my friends and I loved. The lot between Old Area and New Area wasn't built up and we used to ride our bikes there and play games. Halloweens were great because you had six-eight apartments per stairwell, several stairwells per building (3? we were stairwell C and on the end, so ...), several buildings close together ... you could fill a bag with candy in a very short amount of time. All good memories. One day it would be fun to stop by and take a picture to show my younger sisters, "Hey, we lived here." Thanks.

Back then we would do In-processing in Frankfurt, "School of Standards." Later we relocated to Darmstadt Germany CFK Cambrai Fritz Kaserne. Near the top of the hill, near the back of the complex, there used to be this tall long wire fencing where this wealthy landowner had these huge Great Danes on the other side. Absolutely LOVE this!! I remember a few New Year fireworks in Germany. I lived in Sacsenhausen (spelling?) In 84 and we were shooting off fireworks from our apartment balcony! It was crazy!!

      @frankfurtonfoottours2361 YES! I loved them. Things have changed somewhat since I lived there. It was in 83-85. Sorry about my spelling of the name. It was a happening place every night.

    WOW!! This brings back so many memories for me. I was there with 143rd Signal Bravo Co. from 1985-1989 in Edwards Kasserne. I never wanted to come back home but life had other plans for me. I also lived in the housing all the way in the back. The last building actually off of Berkersheimer Weg when it becomes In Den Graben and the corner of Am Neuenberg. It was the building right on the corner as you drive up. Almost 40 years has gone by and it seems like yesterday. Thank you for sharing and bringing it all back for me. Oh and yes I certainly remember the snack bar there, the pizza joint and also the Gasthaus next to Drake directly across from Edwards Kaserene to the right. There was a yellow phone both next to it where I would make calls back home occasionally. I remember the PT runs all up and down that area, the gym on Drake, the messhall on Drake, the American Express bank on Drake also to the right of the entrance gate. WOW...

    I do not remember there ever being a ferris wheel at any of the Christmas markets I went to in Frankfurt in the mid 80s. That's beautiful! Thank you again for sharing! On a different note. What is the reason for not being able to photograph the old 97th hospital. I know it's the US consulate now but I guess I don't understand. Probably a security issue.

    • @frankfurtonfoottours2361
      @frankfurtonfoottours2361 Месяц назад

      They started putting up a ferris wheel when they opened the market up over here on the Rossmarkt during or right after Covid. Correct about the security at the consulate. They don't want people filming the cameras, etc.

    Very colorfull but the way you were bundled up, it must have been a cold evening. Do you have a knee replacement?

    • @frankfurtonfoottours2361
      @frankfurtonfoottours2361 Месяц назад

      Yes, it was quite cold that evening. I just had my knee cleaned up, so crutches for 2 weeks.

    • @oberurselts
      @oberurselts Месяц назад

      I just had a nerve stimulator impant placed in my lower left inner leg. Evenings before I go to bed, I place a holster like wrap around my lower left leg. The holster has two pockets. One of the pockets houses a transmitter and the other an antenna. The transmitter and the antenna are connected with an electric cable. The transmitter has a setting of 1 to 24. My setting is 12. I sleep with it over night and take it off the next morning. Now the mircle happens. I take it off and I am good for the entire day. I have two holsters, 2 transmitters (one I keep charged) and three antennas. Something to consider in-lieu-of total knee replacement if and when you get to that point.
