Eagle Nest is a place I found on accident while moving from New York to Arizona, hauling all my things in my VW GTI across the great nation. Of all the scenes I saw, Eagle Nest was and remains my favorite sight on that trip. I was lucky enough to see it again once on a trip and again while moving back east, but I'll always hope and plan to see it again. What a remarkable sight it is coming from the east upon seeing the lake for the first time.. it's like nothing someone from Long Island can even imagine. Maybe next time I'll stop in town, but the sight of that lake and area is just hard to put into words.

That was a beautiful drive. The way they designed the roads it didn't feel like such a high altitude. It felt like rolling hills. So green and with large pines. Eagles Nest is a happening place. Who wouldn't want to be there? TY

A must do drive. As you go through the Moreno Valley you might see groups of elk and wild turkey as you do this trip. We went from Red River to Taos in September!
On the downhill to Eagle Nest from Bobcat Pass you use your engine for a brake by gearing down. Never use your friction brakes; you will burn them up. Diesels have the advantage here with their dedicated engine brakes. We'll be up there in September and of course, my wife loves Red River, so we'll go there for sure. I think it's steeper going into Red River.
That "movie set" you mentioned is actually the old gold mining ghost town of Elizabethtown. When the gold ran out, the people moved to Eagle Nest or left for the Colorado gold fields.

Happy Birthday Rusty, you are the true “Boy Wonder” at 78.I’ll be catching up in 6 months. The movie that was filmed at Eagles Nest was “The Sound of Music”. I think it was the opening when Julie Andrews sang “ The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Pf Music”. Sure does look like the scenery you showed. They probably chose it cause it looks like Austria. What do you think?

I learn something ever day, like the EV range numbers, and the Chevy 3500 transmissions that save wear on the breaks. What's the term for that system? Does it choose the gear for you automatically once you set it to 'M?' Seems to me that transferring the downhill load of a heavy RV from the brakes to the transmission wouldn't be good for the transmission, but what do I know.
M=manual...use shift buttons to upshift or downshift
The transmission in the Chevy 3500 is designed for that purpose, whether coupled to a gasoline or diesel motor. Diesels use the engine and transmission to slow the vehicle.

FYI - I just checked some temps in places we all know, and as of 3:30 pm your time.....Phoenix is 114, it's 104 where I am with tons of traffic, high housing costs, and no scenery, and Capitan is 73. This is frustrating. Hope you're having a cushy day. Wanna trade places?
