  • Gorillas are renowned for their intelligence, so getting these great apes to participate in their own medical procedures involves a lot of training and trust with their Keepers. Go behind-the-scenes to learn more about training and how it assists in daily care, medical exams and the overall well-being of the gorilla troop 🦍
Silverback Charles has been an integral part of the Zoo and troop since 1974, and is one of the oldest living gorillas in the world. Making it to over half a century is quite the milestone, but it is especially significant when we take into account the critically endangered status of their species in the wild, who typically live to be 30-40 years of age.
His Wildlife Care team keeps a close eye on him, making modifications and adjustments as needed to keep him healthy and comfortable in his golden years. We are grateful for every day we have with this very special silverback.
The Zoo’s Director of Wildlife Science, Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco, contributed to the Species 360 Conservation Science Alliance showcasing significant improvements in the life expectancy and lifespan equality in great apes in human care.
In collaboration with other zoological institutions, the report showcases advancements in animal care and welfare over the past century, demonstrating that happier and healthier individuals tend to live longer.
Ensuring the survival of threatened species requires a multifaceted approach, something we prioritize at your Toronto Zoo. Dr. Mastromonaco's holistic approach includes a focus on nutrition, welfare, health, and overall care from the Zoo’s Wildlife Care team, and these facets work cohesively to provide top-notch care to caring for the 3,000+ animals that call the Zoo home.
