Since they would be in and out and not have to regularly patrol these places, they didn't care who they pissed off, or whose house they destroyed, meanwhile the regular soldiers like me who had to patrol those same streets would be the one getting road side bombed in retaliation. In about 2006 I read this book called Highway to Hell, by a British merc, forget the name, ex-SAS, who was in Iraq during that time. Great book, and crazy stuff in it. He really didn't like Blackwater, and they had a very bad reputation among many mercs. Why? He gave one example - Blackwater, in vehicles, blew through a small town and in doing so hit and killed a very young girl. They didn't even stop. The British mercs behind them saw what had happened and stopped, got out, and helped retrieve the body and then sat down with the village eldgers and drank tea and apologized, even though they had not done, it, just because it was the right thing to do and also if they had not done so the Iraqis would put them in with Blackwater and of course seek revenge. Kind of shows who they were.
You're very right about blackwater but not about the special forces. The BBC investigated them and found they were very likely to have committed dozens of assassinations but they top brass covered it up and shut down every single investigation although the evidence is pretty conclusive.
Maybe they were in a hurry? You shouldn't judge if you don't know all the facts. Things like this happen in a war, it isn't the fault of individual soldiers but the leaders that got the country to the point where foreign intervention was necessary.
I was based in Ramadi at the time. During a patrol, we saw the contractors on the bridge from a distance. It was assumed that the insurgency had been screwing with the locals. That day changed our ROEs from “Hostile Act” to “Hostile Intent” and we could finally be on the constant offensive instead of defensive and waiting to be shot first. I interacted with a lot of PMCs on various bases and never did they seem to feel that their safety came before profit.
Brit SF guy that I knew , said when he started contracting himself, he was first tasked with them.. But said they had horrible tactical methods that just did not at all made any sense. Like they did not have proper methods to get in and out and cover eachother as every body moved around. And they were extremely arrogant about everything they did. He was glad to get away from them and was not surprised when it happened.
“Security services” propaganda is a wild thing. Blackwater is just the Western ‘Wagner’. I remember this well. Due to the photos of the men being online. The photos are incredibly gruesome. One shows a body hanging from what if I remember was a structure like a bridge or road sign (was years ago I saw them) and there were little kids and everything around. I felt awful that happened to them… however it does always really bother me that whenever someone like Russia has private “security” such as this… we call them, “mercenaries” or “contract killers” … yet whenever the U.S used them… they’re called, “private contractors” … really an insight into the dirty propaganda game of war. Exact same thing… seen two totally different ways depending whose side you’re on.
The difference is offense. Mercenaries ( Like Wagner) are outlawed because they can fight and seize territory. They are truly private army units. " security services" like Blackwater can only guard or escort according to international laws. They can guard people, bases, and drive along convoys to protect them, but they cannot " assault" or take territory. They are literally security guards with guns while mercenaries are soldiers for hire.
My tactic is to avoid being in other countries with weapons, especially as a PMC. I have found that this strategy has had good effect on my lifespan so far and I recommend this approach, especially to people with kids.

The contractors were escorting a shipment of cooking ware, no less, and for whatever reason did not take the long way going cross country or otherwise trying to avoid driving straight through Fallujah and creating several large obvious targets that practically screamed "AMERICAN CONTRACTORS!" The British PMC's, by contrast, had long before adopted a strategy of trying to blend in with local traffic, using old beat up trucks that looked as much as possible like the local Bongo trucks, and even dressing like the locals down to the face covering i.e. "going stealthy". And that way at worse if their cover was blown THEN they could reply with as much firepower as possible! But Blackwater guys had chosen to travel openly while looking exactly like what they were - which in Fallujah, was suicide.
@@altGoolam What about it? DU rounds aren't uncommon. Sucks if you get hit with one because the smallest DU munitions I know of are 30mm. But you get hit with anything 30mm in diameter and you're going to have a bad day. Uranium can be toxic, but that's true of all heavy metals, including lead. Depleted Uranium is actually less radioactive than natural uranium, because most of it comes from spent fuel in nuclear reactors after the bulk of the energy has been consumed. The fission products are separated from the uranium and you can then process the Uranium into penetrators for ammunition. You can actually hold natural and depleted uranium in your bare hands without any real risk to your health. The problem with ANY heavy metal (not just Uranium) comes from when it gets inside the body. It interferes with a number of bodily systems and gets carried by the blood to every area of the body. Some metals will bind with certain proteins or will damage proteins, which is why things like Chromium and Cadmium are carcinogenic. Because they interfere with protein function, they damage DNA. Uranium on the other hand tends to wreck the kidneys and liver first, which isn't surprising since they are the filters of the body. Longer exposure to Uranium compounds also damages DNA, but not as quickly as some others. Most people who end up with cancer from Uranium exposure worked around the substances for long periods. It's not really the radioactivity that causes problems. It's the chemical toxicity once Uranium is in your body. So if you ever pick up a piece of Uranium, just remember to wash your hands well before you eat anything.

Before I explain the term, this is no endorsement of the policy it is just to answer your question. Insurgents were those who were actively working to destroy the Government of Iraq. Iraq is a Shia majority country, which was ran by a Sunni (minority) dictator, Sadaam Hussein. So when the US dismantled his government, we instituted democratic elections, which of course led to a reversal of this trend, as the majority of people voted into office were then Shia. Being that the Government was supported by the US occupying army, this was seen as illegitimate in the eyes of many Iraqis. So, while attacks were being carried out against US Troops, they were also being carried out against any / all Iraqi Government agents... like police, voter office personnel, local politicians, medical personnel etc etc etc.... the people killing and murdering these other folks... were dubbed insurgents, which literally is defined as rebel or revolutionary, as they were non-state actors... meaning no official government employed them, they did not wear uniforms or identify as state military. A typical factor in state warfare is to wear a uniform, which is to display your allegiance and intent, which helps reduce the confusion against military combatants and civilians. Of course, it is known now that guerrilla war fighters are much more effective when they lie about their intent, and refuse to identify.

A worked with a couple civilian civil engineers that were there 04-06. Both's companies had to hire a pmc for security as government's position wasn't to provide military security for a contractor. The one was escorted from bridge to bridge by a blackwater team for assembly and inspection.
I was there for that specific incident and follow on fight - We did a relief in place (R.I.P) with elements of the 1st Marine Division at the "Brooklyn" bridge (the one they hung the contractors from). My CCP or casualty collection point was inside a small house next to that bridge.

Nothing on the other two trucks. We did hear they were supposed to go around Fallujah and they didn't follow the route. Something to that effect. Fallujah was always a bad spot. 101 told the Marines that took over the AO after the invasion to make sure they watch out. Word was the Marines CO wanted to win hearts and minds after 101 turned Fallujah over. Again, mind you, this was 03. Jerry Zovko was NOT a Ranger. He was an MP. I know, because I was in his Basic Training and OSUT class. (C Co., 787th MP Bn., October 91-March 92). The Gulf War was already over by then, but we all got National Defense Ribbons because we had enlisted during that time frame. He had Airborne School and Ranger School in his enlistment contract. He was assigned to Fort Bragg as an MP. I don't know if he ever got to go to Ranger School, but I do know that he never served in a Ranger Battalion. He also was a non-select at SFAS due to bad peer reviews, and he left the Army after his initial 5 year enlistment was up. And frankly, the guy was a jerk. He didn't deserve to get hung on a bridge in a 3rd world country, but he wasn't some special operations hero either. Whoever did this video needed to do some more research.
I knew him when he worked in Close Protection in Dubai, prior to working for Blackwater. He claimed to have attended Airborne School and Ranger School. He also said he was an MP and trained in Close Protection. I don't recall him saying he was actually a Ranger. He was a huge guy. He worked with a short Brit, an ex SAS guy named John Howard. They made an odd pair, a guy 5'6" & a huge 6'6" guy who looked like Frankenstein. He spoke Arabic and seemed like an OK guy. Didn't deserve the death he had. It was pretty awful. I saw the unedited version and it was pretty gruesome. He thought he was going to make big money in Iraq. In the end, I knew several guys who worked as contractors in Iraq who never made it back. We don't hear much about those guys, but a lot were killed.

So tell the world about the depleted Uranium used in Fallujah.
@@DriveCarToBar nice long-winded response but they're likely talking about the depleted uranium effects on the soldiers who fire such weapons.

They were quickly shipped back to the US to avoid any legal problems. Several years ago there was a video on RUclips showing contractors shooting out the back of their vehicle and laughing as the Iraqis drove to avoid their fire. This is what happens when mercenaries are hired at three times the salaries of soldiers, and are NOT under the UCMJ.

How do you call someone an “insurgent” in their own country?
Exactly
the american inflated ego, great satan
Because we feel like it.

Into following attackers. WHEN THERE JOB. WAS TO STAY WITH AND GUARD THE PRINCIPAL/ CONVOY. they we're protecting. they ran in looking for a fight. And found it. THERE OWN DAMN FAULT. they're job was to get the convoy through. NOT chase the attackers. Into a lethal ambush
@Geoffrey Calligan; Looks like You don't have all the facts Brother. They didn't wander up to collect some scalps, they were killled inside their unarmored vehicles, they didn't even had the time to react. The vehicle that got away from the trucks was trying to escape the ambush. I saw one of the first videos that showed when the shooting started, they were executed at point blank range and receives a minimum of 100+ rds while they were sitting in the vehicle.
They were sent without armored vehicles, sufficient personnel and no back up by Mr. Prince owner of blackwater deliverately. Feel free to do some research, You can find some details in the interviews made by the news channel to the familly of Scott,(RIP), when they were suing blackwater and it's owner. You can find out for Yourself what "REALLY HAPPENED" instead of speculating and saying that it was their fault.
Take care.
