This was a great analysis for Disney and it really goes to show how domineering they were and arguably still are as a company. The Nickelodeon episode is even better. P. S. You should do an episode about Silento, the "watch me whip and nae nae" dude and exploring what happened to him.
even though we were all aware of this, i’ve never realized how black and white their strategy was and the fact it was right in front of our faces lol. great vid brotha
Nick ignored adventure time which went on to basically revitalize cartoon network, and technically they also missed out on Drake's success if you count Degrassi as a Nick property
The fact that Disney tried SO HARD after Miley, Demi and Selena but somehow never made it even though the next generation was talented af is still beyond me. Bridget Mendler, Zendaya, Ross Lynch, Olivia Holt, Dove Cameron, Sabrina Carpenter,…. they made good music even outside their shows but somehow never really broke out like the other girlies. The fact that Olivia did proves that it’s better for them to go outside of Disney from the get go when it comes to music and take creative control straight away, instead of being held down by the picture perfect Disney girl image and the Disney approved songs that go with that
In the case of Bridget and Zendaya they just decided to do other stuff. Zendaya didn't like the music industry and Bridget wanted to study (i think she even has a phd now). Bella Thorne also choose to not do the music thing, she also talked about how they wanted to market her as a Rachel McAdams type but she didn't want that either.
@@fardiachowdhury9758 absolutely! She’s doing incredible things with her acting! I was talking mostly about the actress turned mega pop star trope Disney used to do and how that didn’t exactly work with these people. Doesn’t take away they don’t have thriving careers in other fields ☺️
I think Olivia owes a lot of her success to TikTok. You can reach millions of people worldwide in a matter of days. And all being forced to listen to the music of their fyp. Where I was listening to Disney music my brothers in their teens weren’t. But now a days with TikTok people of all ages are listening to the same song in multiple videos catered to their taste
Fun fact: Jessie J, the British popstar, actually wrote "Party In the USA", and she says that song alone paid for her house >.< talk about a songwriter's ultimate daydream lol
I think it would’ve been good if you also mentioned Raven Symone. She set the standards for most Disney girls alongside Hilary Duff. Before HSM, you had The Cheetah Girls franchise which was wildly successful in the early to mid 2000s. Also China Ann Mcclain, Dove Cameron with Descendants, and Coco Jones
it even effected the kids who grew up past that! I barely caught the end of the hype but as a kid i still new they were very prominent in Disney culture lol
I agree, I thought the cheetah girls would be mentioned too. I was born on 00 but I was still able to know them before they weren't as talked about. That's so Raven was my most watched Disney show before Hannah Montana and even when HM came out, I was still watching it lol
Making kid-friendly pop music isn't really as "cool" or profitable as it once was. This conflicts with the Disney Channel's values as a company. They had to stop because it doesn't work anymore.
@@Jinaria101 Fair. I understand the criticism. But at the same time, can’t it be possible to focus on both good character writing AND diversity? Why must it be one or the other? Minorities groups are so often underrepresented in media and even if they get representation, it’s often in form of a stereotype or they’re being villainous. By perpetuating these stereotypes in media, the same (often toxic) stereotypes will be applied to a group of people. REAL people.

i believe Disney missed on Olivia just like they did with Brittany i remember when Olivia's show was airing Disney had the worst views ever literally nobody was watching the channel and i think they realized that and turned thier focus to Disney plus, which gave Olivia a chance to get a deal with a real company. also we can't forget the TikTok impact on her music sorry for any mistakes English isn't my first language
@@thanosmaster-abel559 it has been a really long time since I have seen LaLa Land but as fair as I remember he did sing a lot in the movie. He is really good dancer too.
Had Disney kept Britney, Christina, and Justin, their careers wouldn't have went as far as they had. You think Britney, you think of toxic, baby one more time, oops i did it again, etc. Justin had sexyback, what goes around comes around, rock your body, etc. Christina had a more "tame" discography, but she still had dirrty, lady marmalade, burlesque, etc. Those are the songs that shaped them as artists and boosted their careers. Disney would have NEVER given them the chance to release those songs. Disney could have made them stars, but they could not have made them the global icons they were and are today. I think of Demi, Miley, Selena, Ariana, etc. and I don't associate them with disney or nickelodeon anymore. In their case, their shows are what started and catapulted their careers, but I associate them with their more mature bodies of work they released later on, and think of Disney/Nick as being just a little rough bump they had to go through to get where they are today.
@@tr33main Selena music career is actually pretty decent rn. Not as big as here Disney days but her music career has always been solid. I think she more focus on acting more so than music anyways
Although he's not a musician, Ryan Gosling was also in the Mickey Mouse Club, he's the one next to Britney and he also became mega successful, coincidence? I think not! I see you Mouse! I know what you are!
I would say an honorable mention is Ross Lynch from Austin and Ally. Honestly that show helped launch R5 (the band he was in,, 2 of their songs were on the 1st season soundtrack) and even though they broke up in 2018 and split from Hollywood Records due to creative and image differences, he's still making music as The Driver Era with his brother and he's still acting.
Tbh Zendaya could’ve gotten just as big, just look at her single ‘Replay.’ But she knew to distance herself from Disney, and pursued her own thing… and today she’s making movies with Marvel, etc., she’s pretty damn well-off. And at no loss of mental health and exploitation many female stars faced under large corporations. Her team knew damn well what they were doing. I’m biased for sure, but all those stars (female ones specifically) had some sort of mental break trying to break free of their roles from Disney…
@@shaina8947 technically yeah but she’s more respected now because of marvel and other movies and shit and at least marvel will let you say things that mature audiences like
Calling it a factory is so painfully accurate because in Demi Lovato's newest documentary they were saying that they literally filmed the camp rock movie and then immediately went on your to promote it, got home and started recording an album, then went on tour for that album, got home and immediately started filming Sonny the TV show, then went on tour for that album, etc.
Zendaya has spoken out about not pursuing a music career due to a bad contract. She has vocals but chooses not to go down that path. She encourages young actors & artist to read their contract, study & understand it.
People underestimate Radio Disney. That was escape to listen to while doing homework or chores. I didn’t know anyone my age at the time that wasn’t listening to it, regardless of what they looked like. A lot of people think it was just rich suburban white kids listening when at the time, they honestly targeted every audience. So we all ended up talking and becoming friends with one another in a way that wasn’t common before. I think it’s one reason why so many of us loved Disney growing up. The only time Disney became less interesting was when it became mostly very white after 2010 to the point that it wasn’t as fun to look at anymore.
Speaking of Radio Disney, remember when Fall Out Boy was on the Radio Disney Music Awards? And when they were in Big Hero 6? And they got P!ATD for Frozen 2? Next thing you know Disney probably will get MCR or Paramore for their next animated movie.
They were literally so overworked and working with people that were not so safe to have around children, Demi was literally raped by someone who worked at Disney as a child which is so sad.I’m sure Disney was just worried about money not about their well being which is why so many of them lashed out to leave
@@YenellyT yea Demi was in an unfortunate situation, but I wouldn’t say they were overworked, majority of actors from kids shows say their time on set was fun and it didn’t even feel like work. Even skye Jackson in a recent video she made that everyone always had a great time and and she would often hang out with the cast of other shows cause they filmed in the same lot , and everyone would get together and play basketball or something when they weren’t shooting. Now maybe Selena , Miley and Demi probably had a Bigger load on their shoulders because they were pushed as the role models, were the leads of their own shows and they had to keep up with they’re music careers. Even tho they were young , without all that hard work they probably wouldn’t have been as successful as they became and till this day they still a lot more relevant compared to other Disney stars. And others that had bad experiences were put into the industry by their parents and didn’t even really have the passion to be in the entertainment business to begin with like jennet Mccurty. The media doesn’t help either when they make minor things that most teens do seem like a bigger deal just because they play a innocent character on tv, that adds to the pressure for some people.
@@person8520Uh it is definitely Disney's fault . They should have put measures in place to protect their actors, especially if most of them happen to be kids and teens. It's not a coincidence that most of their actors later on come out with stories of abuse of some sort. But does Disney learn a lesson? NO!
I think Disney has realized that adolescents just don’t watch “kid” shows like they used to. I watched Disney channel well into my teens, but I don’t think teens these days would really watch those kind of shows, or watch much TV at all. They’re busier watching TikTok and other stuff on social media. You get a show now like High School Musical the Series which yes, has a trash name, but it’s clearly written as something more for grown fans of HSM than for actual teens.
As a teen currently, I can say that in general we watch A LOT of tv, but we basically binge whatever we're watching and it's all stuff from streaming services. Like, compared to when I was a kid and actually watched kid shows on tv, now I just binge multiply shows at once. Also, the popular "teen" shows now are all super dark compared to old teen shows, like, when I think of teen shows now I think of Netflix or CW. But also you're right in the fact that there are a lot of times we just watch youtube or tiktok. I can only speak for people around me and myself so obvs it does differ a bit depending who you talk to and where you go, but this is my insight
@@nevehughes6111 Right, I just can't imagine most teens these days binging sitcoms on Disney Plus. When I was a teen (10-12 years ago) it wasn't uncommon for people my age to be watching Glee, iCarly, and Hannah Montana all in the same week.
@@nickit7655 I think you'd be surprised. I know plenty of people with Disney+ who binge show on it (including hsmtmts and glee) as well as cartoons, maybe not on Disney but they are targeted towards kids. Maybe not the same shows as 10 years ago, but mostly because there are just other shows now. Also for people like me who are late teens, we still kinda grew up on hsm and some of those 2000s shows. I know a lot of people who watch more kid targeted shows as well as adult targeted shows, I think it's just more a case of we binge TV a lot and there's so much out there available that we aren't limited to channels
I remember when Miley's Cant Be Tamed album came out. Loved the song and my grandmother hated it so much! I didnt even realize that album coincided with Miley's desire to distance herself from Disney, (i was literally 9 when all this happened lol) but it makes soooo much sense!! Good for her!!!
Damn... you completly ignored Raven Symone and The Cheetah Girls. Cheetah Girls, even without Raven, went to have an album outside the movie franchise and three world tours
Maybe he didn’t count her because Raven was already successful as an actress before Disney. Her come up was different but I do agree he shoulda mentioned the cheetah girls because the formula was still similar
I remember watching the debut of several of the shows and movies mentioned. It makes me feel so old now. It didn't feel like it had all happened almost 15 years ago
Ashley tisdale was SOOOO underrated. she deserved better. headstrong was such an iconic album. warner was the one who supported ashley not hollywood. hollywood records adopted vanessa.
Olivia's fame from disney is reminiscent of Ariana Grande's fame from nickelodeon in the sense that both artists were noticed and signed by other labels despite their talents being showcased on their original shows. The only difference is that Olivia played a major role in HSMTMTS while Ariana didn't get a single solo on Victorious.
Dude I appreciate the work that goes into these videos, you’re doing so much it’s amazing. I never knew half of these things, it’s so insane to think about.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Raven, That’s so Raven broke many records and was bigger than Hannah Montana at one point and the Cheetahs girls paved the way for a a lot Disney musicals
It might be because of how nasty she turned out. She literally complained about being over sexualized since she was on the Cosby's as a kid, and is now repeating the process as an adult on her new show.
Another interesting fact to look at is just the larger awareness of how a lot of labels mistreat and exploit new talent. Taylor Swift, for example, is very vocal about artists' rights to their work. That self-advocacy didn't exist in the 2000s/early 2010s, so it was much easier for Disney to milk their stars. Olivia Rodrigo owns her masters and insisted on it because she saw how others were screwed over, and I'm sure the mouse would've never given her that
That's a really good point. I think with the rise of social media, a more "progressive" media, and even youtube video essays like this one have all contributed to this sort of demystification of the entertainment industry. I mean, Britney Spears has been all over the news recently, not because of new music, but because of a legal case that is a clear example of how these huge popstars can be exploited and controlled. As you said, aritsts have more self-advocacy than before, and even fans are more aware and sympathetic to the artists they support. I did not know Olivia owned her masters, that's great! I know at one point The Weeknd had exactly that advice to new artists starting out: own your work.
Taylor Swift is not the first artist to talk about and being exploited for music. There were many artists that were vocal and huge who talked about being explolited from their labels that were bigger names than her. Prince, TLC, Toni Braxton, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey. Taylor really didn't do anything special in terms of getting artists progressive record deals. It's just about having a good lawyer at the end of the day and how bankable you are as an artist.
I can’t be the only one who thinks Olivia rodrigo overnight success came from a rich business man in a suit who said “she’s gonna happen” and then pressed a button and she was everywhere
Taylor's backing her help a little in some ways, since medias left and right putting a spotlight on her being a taylor swift fan and one of the biggest fandom of course she's a swiftie - so majority of swifties hyping her up on social media really boost her name and music.
as a kid i always thought getting on a disney show was the golden ticket to stardom back in the early 2000s. i remember they always had the sweepstakes where you can actually meet the celebrities n go on a cruise or something.
I'm so so glad I grew up with this disney era, the hsm-miley-selena-demi-jb era. It was amazing. I remember each one of these releases (except for the lizzie mcguire one, I was too young at the time). I remember when hm aired, when all the hsm movies aired, I remember voting for miley to make an appearance in hsm2, I have all the debut albums of these artists including hillary duff's 😍😍
The last clear memory I have of my now dead aunt was us watching the high school musical 2 premier. She made popcorn and we sat and watched it. We loved it, I didn’t know she would die two weeks later. It really was such a nostalgic and fun time. We will never have anything like that again. Especially with the rise of Disney plus.
Right I was born in 1999 and I experienced all of that but I do remember Lizzie McGuire because my sister was born in 94 and was a huge Hilary Stan. My son was born in 2019 and I sometimes think about how he would have never experienced any of what I experienced as a child.
I'm convinced that in order for her to be successful to gen z kids, Disney actually asked her and is going to ask its new stars to pretend they aren't releasing music under Disney and have their own "creative control". This is the exact narrative that would make her seem edgy and not just some kid in the Disney machine. So you are expressing exactly what Disney wants you to express and makes it more likely for everyone to listen to her. I mean, isn't it odd that everyone knows about her little "rebellious" attitude about signing under a Disney contract? Seems like its being overly marketed as part of her image.
@@talksweet5397 very interesting take. And also coincidentally, hayley williams helped worked on a couple songs I think with Olivia Rodrigo and one of those songs sound kinda like a Paramore song. Which Paramore is more known as like this pop rock punk band
@@talksweet5397 Kinda far fetched in my opinion. That sounds like some conspiracy theory lmao first of all it isn't that weird to market her creative control over her songs(and its not that hard to believe that she DOES have creative control when she's been posting her songs on her social media before hsmts was even a thing). Plus she's signed under greffen records.
I'm surprised that he didn't talk more about Shake it Up and Austin & Ally. Those two shows gave us hits after hits each season and most episodes were always entertaining. Ross Lynch and Laura Maurano were releasing good hits during and after the show was airing.
Selena was definitely the last stronghold when it came to shows and music for Disney. Wizards finale was one of the most watched and then her Stars Dance album did pretty well. Obviously Demi was super successful with Disney but her show ended by 2010 and she kinda fell down after she left Hollywood records- I feel like Selena had the most smooth transition out of the three cause she was the most followed person on Instagram for a very long time (until like 2019 but she’s still top 5) and she didn’t have an overly sexualized era or a scandalous era like both miley and Demi had .
Selena’s music was not the stronghold. If anything it’s Miley by a landslide. Don’t you remember how big Hannah Montana was? All her tours sold out quickly and her albums were number 1 in the country for a while. And Selena is heavily manufactured with her music, she doesn’t write any of it and all her songs cater to the pop scene when Miley and Demi have taken a different route.
Demi “fell out” by 2010 because they went to rehab that same year. It basically stopped the trajectory their career with Disney was going in. Fortunately they maintained their fame with their music when they came back and had more creative control over their music
I feel like another reason everything seemed to end in the early 2010s is because my generation (late 90s - early 00s kids) were starting to grow out of our own Disney era. I was heading into middle school by then and had stopped watching Disney and started watching shows targeted more towards older teens and even young adult shows. But yes, the growth of social media and popularity of smartphones definitely contributed a lot, too.
The same happened to me. I started to find myself not nearly as interested in the newer Disney shows once I was in 6th grade. Occasionally, I'd watch an episode of a show that I had already started watching and enjoying when I was younger, like Good Luck Charlie or Wizards of Waverly Place, but I tried to get into watching shows like Ant Farm, Jessie, and Shake It Up, but I just couldn't enjoy them. It's not that the shows are bad, but I was officially coming to terms with the fact that I was now "old".
@@mynameisreallycool1 yes exactly! I would still watch ant farm, jessie, GLC, and other shows released during that time and would enjoy them for the most part, but they weren't as good IMO compared to HM and wizards. So once THOSE shows ended I really stoped watching
also it should be mentioned that in that gap, while Disney US wasn't doing anything, Disney LATAM was constantly trying to put artists out. Disney LATAM had peter punk which was basically the story of Peter trying to be big with his band, then there was Violetta which basically created one of Argentina's currently biggest singers, Brazil had que talento that was a series to promote College 11 that was a duo signed to Disney. And it also had Soy Luna which was kinda like violetta
I think what sets Olivia apart though is she's thriving in the modern age of the internet. Like once she reaches a certain point (and may already be there), she won't need Disney, they'll need her.
@@DR-fc1ey yeah only her acting career is with disney which many people have already forgotten about so she just needs to finish the shows contract and she’s free from the mouse
2009 was like the biggest year of the Disney channel. The brand recognition was off the charts. It kind of crashed in 2011 when The Jonas Brothers, Miley, and Demi were no longer there losing like 3 major groups at once. It probably wasn't a good idea for them to cancel jonas after the 2nd season even with low ratings.
@Jackie Stevens I was a preteen during the 2002-2004 era when Disney Channel was called “Zoog”. Back then it features shows and movies that were kid-friendly and portrayed realistic teens/tweens doing regular teen stuff.
While HSM cast didnt go on to become pop stars, I'd argue HSM itself made a much bigger impact, especially on international markets. I remember so many kids were trying to dance All in this together and its really nostalgic for my generation. Kinda was a precursor to kpop dance videos.
To me, HSM WAS the beginning of it all. It swept the nation, even for teenagers like myself at the time. Everything that came after it was part of that hype train and no one knows why HSM was lightning in a bottle, it just WAS.
Not a precursor to it since kpop has been there even way before (if anything it was inspired by some jpop before growing into its own thing iirc) but i guess that's the closest thing we got that's still iconic to millenials 🤔 as spice girls was to other gens and even the more risqué PCD lol
I remember during high school, when we were given group assignments to make a musical, we all went with HSM, even if I never fully watched it at that time
We had to do a All in this together dance routine at school. HSM for me came out just at the right moment, I was 7-8 years old and it was the one thing everyone in my class was talking about. After that of course my interest in dance routines and music in general (especially music in English from Disney) peaked. So for me HSM was indeed the beginning, what a time…
I still can't believe this was truly my entire childhood. All their careers, I was watching before my eyes and in a way living it with them without knowing what was really happening behind the scenes. Disney channel will never be the way it was from late 90s to 2012 after vine and ig started.

@Hotep X not true, “After recording the song ‘Reflection’ for the Disney movie Mulan (1998), Aguilera signed a recording deal and released a self-titled debut album of dance-oriented pop music in 1999.” She got signed BECAUSE of Reflection
@@qiqisongs but she didn’t sign with RCA until after she made reflection, Disney should’ve heard her talent on that and signed her themselves instead of letting her leave.
Small artist can make a HUGE difference with let say a 2000$ for promoting or better producing their songs. Now imagine a whole multi billion dollars company is backing up your music, it’s actually a surprise that these artists are only with this popularity considering how much it helps to have a whole company supporting your career
Popularity can only take you so far when it comes to music , you still have to consistently drop top 25 billboard hits to say relevant . Even with lots of money and promo that’s tuff to do. Plus it’s hard to get the mainstream to listen to pop music targeted towards kids
An interesting addition to this analysis is Disney In Latin America. There’s this Argentinian (Tini Stoessel) who started as an actress on a Disney show (Violetta) when she was idk 16 maybe. She sang on the show and on its soundtrack. She made a movie about the same show with them (again with a soundtrack). She then went on to release two or three album WITH HOLLYWOOD RECORDS as her label and she is the most listened to Argentine singer in Spotify (or something like that). She has done tours over Europe and South America. Edit: her albums slowly progressed to more mature aesthetics but they’re all under Hollywood records.
Oh yeah, I'm from Poland and I still remember how big the show was around here (same with "Soy Luna" actually). I was really surprised when he mentioned the years of their peak popularity as a gap, but then I found that these shows have never been aired on Disney Channel in the US (apparently they thought the telenovela format wouldn't apply to the American audience). Disney was still thriving, just not in the States lol
From the US, I love Soy Luna and Bia, and saw them on Disney+. The Violetta soundtrack went platinum in a bunch of countries. Tini was 14 when Violetta first aired. In 202, Tini was named Billboard Argentina's Artist Of The Year. I love her music too. I feel like she would get so much more recognition if she went with a record label with less ties to Disney. She's really talented.
@@НавсегдаТвой They rarely air foreign programming on English-language TV networks in the US. OMG Patrick could you please cover Nickelodeon's attempt at creating pop stars? I remember watching Victorious and Big Time Rush as a teen and being like "wait are they famous on the show or are they pop stars in real life?" lmfao
Nick only succeeded with ‘’The Naked Brothers Band’’ IMO Victorious had one hit I believe and it was ‘’Freak the Freak out‘’ I don’t believe any of the songs charted after that Victoria Justice music career was a flop. Jennette Mccurdy didn’t even really want to do music, Miranda Cosgrove wasn’t that invested in her music. The Cheetah Girls definitely played a part in the success of Hannah Montana. That movie had a lot of “girl power” moments and songs, which is probably how Disney thought of songs to write for Hannah Montana
I honestly preferred the Cheetah Girls over most of the Disney Channel musical shows/movies. Especially the first movie (I didn’t like the sequels much). It was a good role model for diverse girls of color and teenage girls following their dreams and working hard for it. That’s the kind of message that todays youth desperately needs.
Incredible case study! I love your work, it's a fascinating watch to have the stories of nostalgic childhood icons unpacked, and so well; I feel enlightened, and thoroughly entertained!
Latin American Disney sort of used this same formula too: from 2012 to 2015 aired the Argentinian TV show “Violetta”, which was about a musically gifted teenager who moves back to Buenos Aires with her father after having lived in Europe. They casted the 14 year old Martina Stoessel to play the protagonist; the show had multiple records and tours. Today she’s one of the most successful Latin American musicians. Her artistic name is “TINI” and her music is dope, by the way.
Oh my God I completely forgot abput that show. Im eastern european, and I just remember how all the girls were obsessed with it and we all hated it. I’ll give her a second chance though .
Also Patito Feo at the same era with Violeta was huuuuge thing and Disney Latino America bought the rights of the show and the second season was on Disney Channel.
I still remember my sisters Lizzie Mcquire themed makeup. I don't have many memories of my old home in Rhode Island, but that's one that sticks out the most. I remember sneaking into her room for my older bro and she had this N'Sync sliding figurine (think a funko pop and rubixs cube combo thing with a head, torso and leg piece all connecting on a swiveling thing) and the smell of the makeup. I remember I snuck in, stole this CD player she had, tripped and spilled all of this nail polish and glitter EVERYWHERE. God, she was so pissed. Now just imagine a like... four or five year old, covered in glitter, telling his mom and older sis that 'nope. I didn't go into her room'
as someone who gREW UP with these shows and these pop stars, it BLEW my mind to see the formula all laid out like that. cause like the other 8 million kids who were watching disney channel, i did not know that we so EASILY fed into what they were feeding us and it just BLEW my mind
I really liked Sour as a debut but it is definitely naive to think that she was homegrown in any way shape or form. it is impressive though that Sour’s writing and production crew mostly just boiled down to Rodrigo and Dan Nigro.
Yea I wouldn’t say homegrown but “industry plant” is a reach. Simply because she wasn’t necessarily hiding label connections it has been straight up and embraced it since the beginning.
@@JRNova11 definitely agree. for someone who has huge label and industry connections she definitely has a lot of free agency with what she writes and that’s super cool
I remember that one of the former stars said, that the company checked how they act in public, what they say in the interviews, what to wear,ect... It shows, that at Disney there is no space left for coincidences .... I can imagine and understand why Demi, Miley and others wanted to leave the factory and are still mad and traumatized by now
I would also like to add Zendaya as well. She did try to debut as a singer in the music industry but she mostly continued her acting career. She sounds so good in The Greatest Showman though.
He was talking about musicians that got their careers started because of Disney Channel. Ryan Gosling is an actor so it makes sense why he wasn’t talked about in the vid
On the finders fee thing: Disney wouldn't be able to do that because a lifetime contract like that would expire as soon as the child turned 18 as any contract signed on their behalf before that date would no longer be considered legally binding. It's likely that Olivia waited until her contract expired and then quietly dipped out
I think Disney could still have a finders fee/cut in her current set-up. Olivia released music w/Interscope before her 18th birthday while on Disney+ show. And Disney could have control of her solo career well after her Disney days. This is related but with a boyband Why Don't We, their case w/management went public bc they were trying to break contract with ex-management team who were abusive. In their contracts that they signed as minors, the management STILL had control and management claims over their solo careers. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney worked a clause like that in the contract, they are extremely controlling
@@_Kim_Possible Disney could attempt to work that in but the clause wouldn't be considered legal so Olivia Rodrigo would not have to abide by it, even with music she released before her 18th birthday as long as it wasn't released through Disney. It's likely she wouldn't even have to sue, she could just stop paying them and Disney wouldn't have grounds to sue because the contract itself would be considered unenforceable as employment contracts for minors in California have a 7 year term limit anyway. They could try but they would likely be laughed out of court. Clauses like that depend on people not knowing any better. I also can't find any sort of article saying Why Don't We had an issue breaking contract with their former managers. The only lawsuit I could find was the two managers suing each other and the boyband coming out to speak on the horrible conditions they suffered under those managers. Nothing about them not being able to break contract post 18th birthday or the management team having control of their solo careers after they reached adulthood. If you have an article detailing that aspect of it, I would love to read it though.
@@termythewormy RUclips won’t let me link links but it is a billboard article titled,”Why Don't We's Management Tussle in Lawsuits Alleging 'Nightmarish Behavior'” if you look it up it should be the first link or so. The article mentions that the ex management they are suing still had control over their solo career even though they signed it as minors. I used to think that you couldn’t hold minors to agreements past 18 until I read the WDW article. On top of that I remember people passing rumors around that some 5H members are bound by contract even solo. Another music contract that is wild is 5SOS, they (signed as minors) were basically owned in a 50-50 split by 1D & Modest. Even after 1D split members still made money off of 5SOS until 2018. Contracts are crazy. Also Disney could still get a cut from her music kinda like a 360 deal. Like how labels make money off of artists’ merch or even promotions
@@_Kim_Possible no such thing for olivia, she owns her masters and has 100% control of her music and career, she has 0 ties to disney at this point because her mother and father made sure in her contracts she would not be taken advantage of and that she has now quit disney and will finish the filming of her part in her show, her record deal also came to her by surprise as disney had nothing to do with it, its safe to say olivia is safe from disney and their giant ass hands.
@@DR-fc1ey Only time will tell honestly. This is just purely speculation. And her owning masters doesn’t take away from Disney having a 360 deal on her (or their stars). A 360 deal surpasses masters ownership. And I never claimed Disney has creative control. Literally Disney collects a check whenever she gets a check that’s how 360 deals work/restrictive contracts work. Regardless of her parents’ involvement that nasty mouse is gonna get their way. Also you don’t follow her story closely. The record deal was NOT a surprise. She literally was in a contract bidding war between major labels.
Man this is so twisted. Screw Disney, they literally experimented with children and squeezed them dry. The fact that so many of these stars had public meldowns too probably put a halt on their plans as well.
You could argue the whole school system is a children's experiment to make them functional and productive adults. Not giving them an education and letting them experience the harsh reality of capitalism is equally as bad too.
@@triadwarfare Not having a normal childhood usually fucks somebody up later down the line when they're adults. Now it's not always, sometimes they are able to avoid complete breakdown if they have a good support system.
I watched all of these before my child eyes and never realized how well Disney cross promoted their stars. I literally didn’t know why Hannah Montana was making a big deal out of the then-unknown Jonás Brothers when I watched that episode.
Loving this channel and the deep dives into the inner-workings of the music industry...It's really time to pull back the curtain on all this, and your level of research and dot-connecting is unmatched. Great video, stoked for more!
I think part of the problem for Disney is that in the '10s we somewhat moved away from the "manufactured" pop star a la Britney and Christina and towards more authentic-feeling, singer-songwriter types a la Taylor Swift and then later people like Halsey and Billie Eilish. It's not like Disney wasn't trying their damnedest throughout the '10s to strike gold again with people like Dove Cameron, Laura Marano, Ross Lynch, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Holt. It's just that it's a much trickier formula now that pretty face + decent voice + catchy songs by other songwriters = hits. Disney is only just starting to figure that out, and letting both Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett actually write songs for HSM the series shows they're starting to recognize the value of developing songwriters and not just singers. The issue they're going to run into is... what young singer-songwriter nowadays would actually want to sign with Hollywood Records? Olivia shows the potential of what you can do if you take your talent elsewhere, and then you also have people like Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, and the Jonas Brothers who have been pretty vocal about how stifling Hollywood Records/the Disney machine can be.
Yes, I think it's even trickier cause they continue to promote this idea "anyone can be a star" and teenagers would believe this lie. But I watched so many young artist on ticktock or youtube struggling to get records deal cause they not on disney and don't have rich parents. And let be honest Olivia is from a very privileged family as a lot of nowadays disney stars.
Yeah, if anything it's harder now because you kind of need both an organic, grassroots fanbase AND insiders who know how to play the system that are willing to invest in you. Some people are born into the second part of that, and they certainly have an edge over the people that aren't.
I think you have the best comment here, like you said, now it's not just about being pretty and have catchy melodies, people are more demanding of good songwritting, which we all know is not a good quality of Disney... And we notice that the bigest popstars now have that, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish...
With social media and internet presence becoming more important for artists to be known, a lot of talented people can release music independently and with streaming services like Spotify and RUclips they can do it without a label. It's certainly harder to go big, but still people end up having more "options" on what to hear.
It's kinda funny how the one they missed out on (Britney Spears) is the most popular/influential to pop music of the listed stars. She was everywhere and worldwide in the 2000s. I don't really see Miley, Selena even Olivia etc. having that level of popularity even if they currently are 'hot'.
Well Britney came onto the scene when the music industry was different. Without youtube it was a big deal when we were kids to set aside Sunday mornings to watch your favorite music videos or tune into the Sunday night top forty to listen to your favorite songs, because you couldn't download them, so you remembered them. A lot of money was spent producing albums and hiring the best people. These days the albums are rush jobs produced in-house so you forget them the next day. Plus digital music wasn't a thing so you only owned music if you really liked it, having to pay a lot of money for the album, and there was less stuff being broadcast competing for your focus. Popstars these days are a dime a dozen so it's much harder to get people's long-lasting attention. Plus she was the first teen blonde bombshell popstar of more modern times so she was memorable. Record companies tried to emulate the model but most of them just faded away after a few hits.
@@dynaa4168 Miley wouldnt stand a chance to compete with the prime years Britney in early 2000s. I even doubt she could go against Christina to be honest.
The way you only mentioned the disney actors/actresses turned musicians that struck gold in that 2006-2008 time frame but there were many other attempts like Aly & AJ (love their music actually)
Dude you're so good at journalism! Super well put together and captivating videos! The Disney machine is no joke. I knew it was happening the entire time. Even at a young age growing up with it. Olivia Rodrigo being the newest of our current time. Olivia has the advantage of modern day social media. I'm honestly surprised Disney hasn't bought TikTok yet. TikTok is the modern day engine for the industry's music and acting scouting/promotion. If Disney wants to reignite a popstar factory, they need a TikTok. Simple as that.
What this guy forgot to mention was that Disney did this formula on EVERY actor. Like, Raven Symone. They also keep having their actors come together and sing for re-releases of their animated classics. It’s like their “RUclips Rewind” before “RUclips Rewind” existed. Fun fact: That’s So Raven was originally going to star her friend Chelsea, but they changed their minds after the first episode. They starred Raven instead of the actor Anneliese van der Pol. Both tried singing and starting their own careers. Raven took off and was more successful. Kinda like what happened with Zendaya when she co-starred with Bella Thorne. Bella and Anneliese both have red hair. COINCIDENCE!? I THINK NOT!! 😛
Lol it’s weird, back then we as in the fans weren’t that aware of all this but aren’t surprised either! It’s like as in today it’s so easy to put all the pieces together!
I think with Olivia they are actually reversing the formula: allow their show to get a star a record label, even if outside Disney, but then use the wider fame brought about by the subsequent records to bring attention to their show through that star. It doesn't matter what label signs Olivia because ultimately, people don't pay attention to the record label behind an album. They see Olivia, they see she's in a show, they watch the show. Disney gets subscribers regardless and doesn't even have to produce an album themselves.
That's a very good point. This might be because I'm older and kind of stopped watching Disney Channel in the early 2010s, but I didn't know that Bizaardvark and HSMTMTS existed until Olivia's music came out (I know Bizaardvark is slightly older, but still). Honestly, when Driver's License came out, I thought, "Wow, what a great song. Who is this girl?" and when I looked her up, I thought, "Huh? She's a Disney kid? Man, I'm old..."
@PatrickCc, I know I’m late to this video. But your kinda blowin my mind rn. It’s like I’m watching my childhood in one compact video. I remember exactly when and where I watched THESE MASTERPIECES DISNEY MADE.
So the Jonas Brothers debut album was the only one that went platinum without the backing of movies and TV shows I guess, they were already making music and performing before Disney picked them up so it makes sense.
@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me Yeah, true, but it wasn't directly piggy backing off of a certain TV show or movie for success. They were the only ones who started with an album first and then went on to do movies and other stuff.
@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me Jonas Brothers did actually have music before Disney, Nick Primarily they got signed a bit later. But youre right SOS used to play all the time; But I also remember other movie tie in songs like Year 3000 and Hold On. Also they used to play the hell out of ‘’Look Me In The Eyes’’ I’m honestly not ashamed to say some of those songs were bops and I was a fan of JB. I havent played there new shit tho at all
@Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me The Jonas Brothers did a remake/cover of “Kids in America” to promote Disney’s Meet the Robinsons movie. They covered “I Wanna Be Like You” for a re-release of the Jungle Book. They covered “Poor Unfortunate Souls” for a re-release of The Little Mermaid. Their song “Hold On” promoted Disney’s Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board. The band sang a new version of Disney’s TV show American Dragon: Jake Long. They stared in the Camp Rock franchise and had their own TV show. Disney premiered their own 3D concert movie like what they did with Hannah Montana.
It was also when the internet and social media was picking up! And they leveraged it. They posted everything on RUclips and they used to do livestreams and stuff
Yeah cause the formation of their band had nothing to do with Disney at all. They were also musicians first, that's why even after getting a show on the channel, what they did onscreen and what they did for themselves could be seen as separate entities
I can't say that I didn't really know about this already, but wow this video was so interesting to connect them all. Love the content recently, you've definitely got something going recently and I'm a fan of it.
Britney work with Disney with her two first álbum and promote her on the channel, Justin and Christina too... they got the chance to perform on the Disney Parks.... i lot of Disney fellow actors kwon them from 1997 to 2000
@@andyfro6907 But they didnt own her image. Sadly, this didnt stop people from exploiting Britney, she just was controlled and taken advantage of by different people instead of Disney.
Interesting stuff, and I didn't watch or listen to any of it, but it's impressive. A couple of things: First, having a channel or record label was a fantastic infrastructure until everything diversified with online music and shows. Attention is a currency, and Disney figured out how to use the popularity of a show to bankroll a record with audience attention, then maybe another record and a movie. That's a perfect example of synergistic marketing. Second, attention is also finite and fatigue happens. They started to slump even before the platform shattered, so they might have figured out where their limits are. Assuming they figure out how to use online platforms, it could happen again, but they need to know when to stop, or at least when to move on to a new, younger star. Great video.
Yooo this was so well done Patrick, these new videos of yours are genuinely your best ever imo. So much research done in with a fantastic in depth presentation! Keep it up dude
The rise of social media is probably the main reason why the Disney machine came to a halt in 2012. You suddenly didn't need the support of a record label or television network to become successful, you just needed good content that went viral. This type of success pipeline continues today with TikTok, which I argue is almost a spiritual successor to everything that proceeded it.
Its actually kinda interesting to me that Demi’s albums only went Gold. I personally feel like Demi had the best solo music out of everyone on the channel at the time. It never felt like “Disney music” or bubblegum pop it was very powerhouse and heavily rock influenced. But maybe that’s why the albums weren’t as successful as Selena’s or Miley’s. The music was a bit mature (not the lyrical content per se, but definitely the vocals and production).
Great point. I used to write for a music blog and I always called Demi 'the non-Disney Disney girl". She always felt like a unique entity rather than a cog in a massive machine. Her vocal ability eclipses Miley, Selena, and Hilary(no shade intended- I adore them all). The first time I heard "Skyscraper" I was absolutely floored. Seeing her documentaries, I could see Demi being a bit more headstrong and willing to fight for a little more control.
They get the label push and marketing. Trust me there’s plenty of girls out there that’s better than her but she had the connections which they do not have. That’s the whole point of this channel, to point out how unfair the system is.
@@itsjustvin7630 yes it would literally be guaranteed, they have to go to mandatory vocal classes, learn instruments, know how to maintain a public image, etc. That’s why most of these people aren’t getting canceled right off the bat, there’s plenty of dirt to be gotten on anyone but the label withholds it and we’ve seen this to be the case for boy groups and girl groups, it’s literally blackmail.

I remember Radio Disney would also constantly play short versions of the songs during ad breaks which kept it in kid's heads even more.

Disney was so good at making their stars marketable and the face of their company. Most of them just couldn’t handle that much fame at a young age.

The first season of that show was geared toward fans of the movie. The second season felt way more kid-ish and was a huge step down.

Exactly
Right! Raven was THE original Disney Channel it girl. The Miley blueprint came from Raven

It's just about having a good lawyer at the end of the day and how bankable you are as an artist.
what does "owns her masters" mean? my mind is thinking a masters degree but she's 18 so i doubt that's it 😅

Taylor's backing her help a little in some ways, since medias left and right putting a spotlight on her being a taylor swift fan and one of the biggest fandom of course she's a swiftie - so majority of swifties hyping her up on social media really boost her name and music.

Olivia said herself: She told Disney she didnt want to have her record contract with them as she wanted to express herself however she wanted

@@Ashley-km4qi idk if u can actually properly read but she said "THE LAST STRONGHOLD"
Occasionally, I'd watch an episode of a show that I had already started watching and enjoying when I was younger, like Good Luck Charlie or Wizards of Waverly Place, but I tried to get into watching shows like Ant Farm, Jessie, and Shake It Up, but I just couldn't enjoy them. also it should be mentioned that in that gap, while Disney US wasn't doing anything, Disney LATAM was constantly trying to put artists out.

It probably wasn't a good idea for them to cancel jonas after the 2nd season even with low ratings.

I was a preteen during the 2002-2004 era when Disney Channel was called “Zoog”.
I remember during high school, when we were given group assignments to make a musical, we all went with HSM, even if I never fully watched it at that time
kpop dance videos was just inspiration from black artists like janet jackson etc not hsm 😭.

Latin American Disney sort of used this same formula too: from 2012 to 2015 aired the Argentinian TV show “Violetta”, which was about a musically gifted teenager who moves back to Buenos Aires with her father after having lived in Europe.
Another music contract that is wild is 5SOS, they (signed as minors) were basically owned in a 50-50 split by 1D & Modest. Even after 1D split members still made money off of 5SOS until 2018.

@@triadwarfare Not having a normal childhood usually fucks somebody up later down the line when they're adults. Now it's not always, sometimes they are able to avoid complete breakdown if they have a good support system.

Oh no, some kids made millions, poor them.
@Emily R You are neither, so talking hypothetically isn't so mighty.
I watched all of these before my child eyes and never realized how well Disney cross promoted their stars. I literally didn’t know why Hannah Montana was making a big deal out of the then-unknown Jonás Brothers when I watched that episode.
I didn’t either lol, but I remember hearing their name and seeing them before that episode aired!
Same! It was genius tbh we were all so young and couldn't tell no better lmao
I remember when no one knew them and they premiered on TRL with the song Mandy.

Loving this channel and the deep dives into the inner-workings of the music industry...It's really time to pull back the curtain on all this, and your level of research and dot-connecting is unmatched. Great video, stoked for more!
Dude you got some skills telling this whole story. Great content!
Too bad the never tried to strike gold with traditional animation again.
With social media and internet presence becoming more important for artists to be known, a lot of talented people can release music independently and with streaming services like Spotify and RUclips they can do it without a label. It's certainly harder to go big, but still people end up having more "options" on what to hear.
2009 was the embodiment of Kronk's famous catchphrase: *Oh yeah. It's all coming together.*

😂😂😂😂😂
Ironically, that line was from an animated film, and animated films were being pushed aside in favor of tween crap.
It's kinda funny how the one they missed out on (Britney Spears) is the most popular/influential to pop music of the listed stars. She was everywhere and worldwide in the 2000s. I don't really see Miley, Selena even Olivia etc. having that level of popularity even if they currently are 'hot'.
Still Miley is famous and everywhere
Exactly!! Britney Spears is literally the princess of pop 😌
@@dynaa4168 not really. Selena is definitely more famous but I would say britney is still at the top
Sheeeeesh, I never knew Disney was *this* calculated in manufacture stars! 😳🤯
Thank you for the amazing video as usual, Pat 🙏🏻
Money makes ppl think harder,U may be terrible at maths but when it comes to money 🤔
Scary
Exact
I was in hs when the show came out and it never really interested me, but once I became a fan of Olivia I def watched the show simply because of her😩
Yea I only watched the show because I wanted to see Olivia
That's a very good point. This might be because I'm older and kind of stopped watching Disney Channel in the early 2010s, but I didn't know that Bizaardvark and HSMTMTS existed until Olivia's music came out (I know Bizaardvark is slightly older, but still). Honestly, when Driver's License came out, I thought, "Wow, what a great song. Who is this girl?" and when I looked her up, I thought, "Huh? She's a Disney kid? Man, I'm old..."
@@cadiieboii8221 bro same😂 it was actually pretty good, as well. tho when she wasn’t in s2 as much (because of sour ofcofc) i stopped watching 🥲
Right, like I knew all this but the video was still interesting and spot on!
Ok, but let’s be real. If Disney got Britney, we wouldn’t have THE Britney.

Britney work with Disney with her two first álbum and promote her on the channel, Justin and Christina too... they got the chance to perform on the Disney Parks.... i lot of Disney fellow actors kwon them from 1997 to 2000

So you're telling us that Disney...is a talent-finder company and not just our childhood nostalgia? Mind = blown 🤯🤯🤯
This is a masterclass in pop star manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain management!
Interesting stuff, and I didn't watch or listen to any of it, but it's impressive. A couple of things:
First, having a channel or record label was a fantastic infrastructure until everything diversified with online music and shows.
Fergie and Ryan Gosling were also on the 90s MMC with Britney, Justin and Christina, so that talent scout was def on point.
Yooo this was so well done Patrick, these new videos of yours are genuinely your best ever imo. So much research done in with a fantastic in depth presentation! Keep it up dude
Let’s not forget who guest starred in HSM 2 RIGHT before an episode of her show aired 👀 lmao this video was so good
The rise of social media is probably the main reason why the Disney machine came to a halt in 2012.
Yeah it didn't feel bubblegum-y, and even within the confines of Disney, it was still good quality music
@@JennaLeigh even the pre-Skyscraper stuff was incredible. La La Land, Don’t Forget & Remember December are QUALITY

But you cant deny disney's eyes for talent and making superstars thooooo
They get the label push and marketing. Trust me there’s plenty of girls out there that’s better than her but she had the connections which they do not have. That’s the whole point of this channel, to point out how unfair the system is.
But everyone that blows up isn't necessarily good Disney definitely helps with marketing
Along with a team songwriters / producers / stylist to cultivate their sound look
@@good-tn9sr would it be guaranteed they'd be better or would it only fit a niche audience
Interesting video! I loved watching Disney Channel as a kid. I'm glad to have witnessed Miley, Selena, Demi and JoBros' rise to fame. Good times :) The last Disney star that I think was truly great was Bridgit Mendler.
