@@YesThisIsJamesWier Yeah, and on top of that it's not like it's gotten worse, I've been watching since those rap videos and personally I liked those, but he's changed into more of the 2000s kinda era of nostalgia and it's still been top class.
Adult Swim was genius because right after Cartoon Network they would play King of the Hill. An adult show that was for adults but wasn’t nearly as explicit compared to other shows. Kinda like the Simpsons. It was a perfect transition from kids shows to adult shows because it basically gave Parents an hour to tell their kids to change the channel before Family Guy came on.
Anyone remember the beginning of Boondocks (Season 1: Episode 5 - A Date With the Health Inspector) where we got to see a THICC muscle man (played by former Old Spice member Terry Crews)’s long cock?
watching robot chicken on low volume at 3 am when i was 8-10 years old. 00 baby my parents stopped giving a shit what I watched by the time I was 10 anyways
You forgot about Toonami. Which aired right when kids got out of school and fundamentally introduced japanese Anime to us. So when adult swim started airing anime it helped blow the whole channel up on adult swim. The toonami run is one of my fondest memories.
The only thing I really remember about Toonami was when they had that game on their website and you were on some space ship with some black goo alien. All I remember lol
Things YOU missed as a kid. When I was a kid I watched south park so nothing in SpongeBob was really that vulgar. I think when we look back in hindsight we are surprised at how serious it takes it's younger viewers.
As a teen back in the day watching AS was my time. No lights, everyone is asleep, and I get to watch adult cartoons. It's also when I discovered G4and shows like Cinematech: Nocturnal Emissions and Spike TV. Mtv really pushed much of my lowbrow humor into my adult life. I still miss that feeling of watching something late at night knowing I wasn't supposed to. I feel that apart of my childhood is now gone.
Omg I never really realized how iconic the second wave of Cartoon Network cartoons were. Regular show, gumball, flapjack, apple and onion ughhhh bangers
I remember when I was young, my mom would NEVER let us watch Adult Swim but one night I convinced my grandpa to let me watch it when I was staying the night and we laughed so hard to an episode of family guy together it became a regular thing. I would be begging to stay the night with him all the time so we could watch the forbidden cartoons.
I don’t understand why kids can’t watch family guy like wtf. It’s just a cartoon. Sure it has curse words. But kids curse too. So what’s the big deal with my mom forbidding me to watch family guy as a kid? 🤣
@@LilXancheX i think it had something to do ưith some aldult scenes and as well as inproriate joké that kids will use them without knowing the meaning at bad times
I literally just came across his channel today and this is the second vid of his I'm watching. What did the channel used to be? And do you have any recommendations?
I remember a lot of episodes of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Flapjack, Chowder, Amazing World of Gumball, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo, and Code Name Kids Next Door having very adult material which made me hesitate watching those shows, but they definitely appeal to me more now that I’m older. I would love if Cartoon Network created a steaming platform with Adult Swim but I think they have a deal to stream with HBO Max atm and I don’t want to pay for content I’m not going to watch
they do not have a deal with HBO max, they're owned basically by THE SAME company and CN as well as Adult Swim have both their own hubs on the platform. HBO Max IS the streaming platform of Cartoon Network and you can find all the shows listed in the comment there except for Johnny Bravo which for some reason is not yet available.
@@idkwhowashere1218 it was a loveable show after all, of course not for young children, but the point is, at the end of most episodes the old man was punished for his behaviour
I still remember a line from the Looney Tunes episode with Babbit and Catstello where Babbit says "Give me the bird!" and Catstello states "If the Hayes office would let me, I'd give him the bird!"
the grind has not stopped, holy shit pat just how can you pump out this much amazing content. your growth has been absolutely insane, hope you're doing good!
*Its crazy to me cos my parents are into different things* My mother is into stuff like “LOTR” and “Harry Potter” and my Dad is into stuff like “Star Trek” “Star Wars” and pretty much anything Sci-Fi.. I tell my mother “Oh if you like this - you’ll probably love Arcane” and the response is always “Why would I watch a cartoon?” But my Dad literally just watched anything and I remember him saying “Those Clone Wars cartoons were great - did you see those when they were on TV” I think animation just gets shit on by association with kids movies and that’s crazy to me.
yes! i tried to get my sister to watch Arcane with me and she jokingly gagged. my other friends LOVED the show though, despite never even playing League of Legends. Idk if it’s just older generations not understanding that cartoons/animation isn’t JUST for kids.
@@aced6333 I'm 50, Beavis and Butthead, South Park, Ren and Stimpy and all of the Adult Swim content and many other animations from that era and even farther back have ALWAYS been watched and are favorites. Those all lead into all of the great content in the later 90's and into the 2000's and have always been a big part of what I, and everyone I know, watches. You can go back to the animation "Heavy Metal", which came out in 1981 and is a cult classic. Anime has been available since the 50's, its nothing new. I definitely feel like I'm froman "older" generation so when you say this "it’s just older generations not understanding that cartoons/animation isn’t JUST for kids", it makes absolutely no sense to me. 😂
As a GenXer, they had to have a lot of cartoons in the '70s and '80s because our parents were never home before and after school and we needed a babysitter.
Big miss that Toonami wasn’t at least mentioned. Bringing over the animation from Japan, that didn’t really have a age demographic, was something special at the time. You could be any age and enjoy Dragon Ball or Gundam Wing and YuYu Hakusho.
Toonami literally introduced n formed my anime taste. Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Inuyasha, Tenchi Muyo, DragonBall Z, i looked forward to it so much. Other than like X-games or like Tnt/FX that was only thing i watched
Some of the best memories I have of my dad were watching Ren and Stimpy, South Park, the Simpsons and family guy. I was in elementary school and it was really fun for me to be watching these adult humor cartoons with him. My grandparents scolded him for letting me watch these raunchy cartoons so it was kind of a cool rebellious time with me and my dad staying up late on a school night to watch adult swim together. Seeing these cartoons will always make me think of my dad and smile. I miss him a lot.
As a 90’s kid, this is basically a synopsis of 80% of what I watched from my youth, through my teens, and into adulthood, to today. I gotta say, it was an awesome time to be growing up, and it has definitely shaped my interests and humor. Now all those old shows are so spread out across multiple streaming services that it’s impossible to just turn on the tv and watch such a great selection. Instead you need half a dozen different subscriptions, and you don’t get the same variety that we used to, it’s more a binge style of a couple shows at a time. I hardly ever watch tv anymore, and when I want to watch either a new or old show I usually just find where I can watch it, get the subscription for a month, and binge it before the letting the subscription lapse. I’m kinda surprised you didn’t mention WB but I guess they were much more kid friendly and fit less with the theme you were going for, even though they had stuff like Animaniacs which definitely had adult humor subtly placed where kids wouldn’t get it.
I'm not an expert by any means, but I watched seeningly a lot of 1980's reruns and select early 1990's cartoon. I think Animaniacs belonged to a cultural zeitgeist that was nearly ahead of its time, or more probably, focused / related to people who were not necessarily serviced by other shows. I think of Animaniacs being a precursor to Family Guy in a way that Simpsons in the 1990's was more in line with South Park into the 2000's.
gotta give tracey ullman her props for letting matt include the simpsons as shorts on her show before they made a full episode for fox. i remember watching them on her show and being SO excited when they finally had their own. love your channel, keep hitting us with interesting content!
I'm pretty sure Julie Kavner heavily influenced that too, since she plays Marge and others? But yeah Tracy Ulman show was my shit! Saw her once on the pier when I was younger. She was very nice! Anyways, thanks for the memories 🙋🏽♀️✌🏽
Brings back memories. As a younging, I used to always mix up Tracey Chapman and Tracey Ullman although they look nothing alike nor do anything alike lmao
You basically just summed up my last 4 film history classes in college in a much more entertaining and digestible way. I had to make a whole Cartoon Network for a media industry class and we made a version of adult swim suited for the streaming world we see today. It was a lot of fun and It was so dope seeing this after all of that. seriously man keep it up. This was awesome.
I remember using the "cartoons are for kids" way of thinking to trick my parents into letting me watch certain shows. My cousin and I also used that for the Summer holidays when we found out that cool anime shows were shown past 10 pm too ( on some German tv channels). We had a lot of fun watching those shows. Part of why it worked was also the fact we used to watch anime on a daily basis so all I had to say was " it's like the shows we watch during the day" and it worked every time.
Even looking at post-Code cartoons, I dare anyone to tell me that the typical Warner’s or MGM cartoons from the “40s were intended for kids. Tex Avery’s “The Blitz Wolf” has a scene in which a flaccid cannon is given the ‘40s equivalent of Viagra and immediately…uh… springs to life. Not what I’d call subtle.
How did you completely miss The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (1959-1964)? A groundbreaking show that was ostensibly made for kids, but packed with jokes that only the adults would get, and witty social satire.
I still rewatch animated shows that I used to watch when I was younger, (dexters lab, courage, regular show, adventure time, gravity falls, etc) when I look back at cartoons it brings me back to my childhood
Makes me feel old, when gravity falls came out I was already an adult. Enjoy your youth friend. You're not going back to childhood you're still in it, don't forget that 💚
I studied Multimedia design between 2016 and 2018 , and we had an animation module as well. I have to say that this video could've definitely made the entire course way more fun and informative, the research in this video is remarkably accurate.
As a 90s baby, I'm thankful that Ted Turner introduced me to a ton of old cartoons that I probably would never have seen if it wasn't for him. Growing up to find out that Scooby-Doo and Jonny Quest were as old as my mom was mind blowing lol
@@realmichaud Yeah he was. Although he couldn't buy the wwf as Vince McMahon beat him at that. Keeping in mind WWF / WWE weren't even rich at the time with like today's revenue. They were piss poor compared to now & Vince still managed to beat Ted & WCW in the long run.
I always wondered why growing up we watched the same cartoons from the 70s. I think as 90 kids we grew up in the perfect time for cartoons we got the old mixed with the new it was rad
I feel like the 90s generation we got exposed to too much adult material during our early age.Whats crazy is that after COVID everyone now starting to look insane.

Ngl, I think we can have more adult animations in the streaming world. As you said, with streaming apps, there are some bound to only produce one type of content, but I’ve also heard from many folks that there is too many streaming apps so they don’t bother with it. If anything, we’ll just have to see where the future of tv and these streaming apps go before we can settle on something for longevity.
Great, because I want to make my own works with a severity of uncensored, completely uncovered (no hair, no moisture) nudity of attractive women with thick thighs, wide hips, jacked arms and large round bums (and men with the same bodies)!
Example: PowerBursters with Marie Henrie Vega (played by a Miley Cyrus lookalike, MAYBE Zooey Deschanel, meaning she would look like them combined) and her husband Chadwick Tolentino (played by (and looking a lot like) James Maslow) as some of those people with their surrogate daughter on a nude beach (who would look partially like her dad and exactly like her mom as she grows into a stepmother of Rodney Broaner that follows the footsteps of Marie) since late 2006 when the younger woman was born (M&C would be born in 1988).
Love the videos you make Pat! you make great in depth videos on yt that practically no one does and thats why I love your videos man. Keep up the good work and strive!
I think animation is at its peak when its aimed at a teen audience like regular show. Not to much in any way from kids to adults, perfectly balanced and there's something for everyone.
That's basically what the PG-13 hate is based on. Studios trying to cover as many demographics as possible. Nowadays, people are complaining that there isn't enough R-rated content, while PG is often seen as irrelevant.
I'm watching from Australia 🇦🇺 . As well as alot of the major cartoons mentioned in this video , I remember watching " Drawn Together " about 20 something years ago ( in my 20s ) . It was unashamedly ( very ) adult humour . The world could do with it being brought back . ♑️✍️🇸🇯🇦🇺
For me, King of the Hill is the most impactful adult oriented cartoon. So many amazing comedy moments, and basically a step by step guide on how to live your life financially responsibly. The way all of the characters play off of each other, and the way Arlen feels so real and grounded was awesome. Not to mention I’ve lived in Texas my whole life so a lot of the day to day moments are really relatable to me.
The Animaniacs did a great job of making a kids show that was still very fun for adults to watch...many little innuendos and adult jokes throughout the entire thing.
It's been banned for violence Just like pretty much everything we watched as kids has And just look at the effects. My god. We have produced a generation, or two, of useless, give up too easily, brainwashed... i can think of some other adjectives that are also bad. Whatever changed. We must undo it and fast. Or we are done for.
I was a 90s kid (born 1984) when I was really into toons. I still watch them now and me and my friends quote random lines from stuff like Johnny Bravo and Dexter's Lab so often it is insane. God knows how many times we have just randomly sent voice text saying 'Ommelette du fromage!'.
Much respect for this one Patrick. Cool to see the original intro from Adult Swim. Most people don't even remember that a lot of it was specifically pool themed when it started.
The adult swim bumps were special because it made it personal. You could imagine whoever you wanted speaking to you through the tv almost mocking you for watching adult swim. It felt like you were joking around with your friend in between shows. In the same sense they were also so laid back that it felt natural whenever they came on in between the chaotic shows that were airing.
I was born in 1980 and grew up on most of the older cartoons and still look to some of the newer ones (Family guy) to de-stress. I have heard many a people especially men say "cartoons are for kids"...pity they dont know 🤦🏽♂️. But I love the way u explained and broke it down. I remember when cartoon network came on the scene and I loved it but noticed it changed over the years (even with adult swim) but wasn't sure y...so thanks for answering 5hat question for me. I appreciate this vid as an adult who loves cartoons old and new...mostly old ☝️😁
Adult Swim was so formative for me growing up, I obviously loved CN but at night I felt like I was watching something I shouldn’t be watching. Now anime is one of my favorite forms of media thanks to shows like Cowboy Bebop and Inyuasha.
"at night I felt like I was watching something I shouldn’t be watching" Oh how that is a relatable statement. I remember sneaking out of my room to turn the living room TV on in complete darkness, with the volume low to not have anyone hear, and turning on Adult Swim to watch shows Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasha (I think one was at midnight and the other was at 12:30AM).
Cartoons are good but I mainly switched to Anime around the time of Cowboy Bebop. Something about cartoons remain... childish, for lack of a better description. IDK. Maybe it's because they look almost the same as kids cartoons, wheras anime does not. Anime has a level of realism/beauty to it I find lacking in cartoons. Some does at least, lol.
I was born in 1990 and its nice to have relived all this. I remember having to choose between Nick and Cartoon Network when we got our TV provider setup. I picked Cartoon Network, I believe it was around 1996 and all those new cartoons were coming out. I remember Adult Swim coming out, watching Inuyasha before bed. I think Home Movies came on after and I wasn't a huge fav when I was younger, so that show would make me fall asleep. Waking up at 2am to Girls Gone Wild commercials. Good times.
I saw an old interview once with Friz Freling one of the prime creators of the old WB cartoons where he said the cartoons weren't written for kids. They were written for themselves, which is why they were so good. Once I became older I could find things in those cartoons I missed as a kid.
I remember sneaking to watch adult swim and cartoon network because I was scared my mom would be mad. But as I got older me and her watched it together lol. It did take me a while to understand the adult jokes.
I'm nearly 40 years old now. But I remember back to my mum being horrified and researching up "Adult Swim" thinking I was watching pornography or something like it. She never stopped being offended by the term, adult swim. I think it's genius and for decades I've tried to explain it to her.
Even as a kid growing up in the '90s I wondered why some of the cartoons I watched seemed to have adult jokes and themes. Ren and Stimpy was targeted to kids but in retrospect it isn't kid friendly. Haha!
Ren and Stimpy was originally an adult show that rebranded to kids show "Ren and Stimpy adult party cartoon" It didn't do great so became more "kid friendly " only having 6 or so episodes like that
My aunt used to judge me for watching cartoons. Even when her kids would catch me watching them they'll judge me for it lol. When you think about it, most kids don't even like cartoons since we're living in a more digital world. All they wanna watch is tiktok and youtube videos. I also find it weird whenever people get judged for wearing shirts of cartoon characters but people don't bat an eye when people wear sports shirts or shirts of athletes ? Why isn't it considered "childish" when people are into sports ? People started off playing sports as kids yet it's socially acceptable for them to be into them as an adult. I love live action shows, but cartoons just hit different for me. I love shows like rugrats, scooby-doo, looney tunes, ed edd n eddy, the powerpuff girls, johnny bravo, american dragon jake long, foster's home for imaginary friends, hi hi puffy ami yumi, kim possible, tiny toon adventures, animaniacs, life as a teenage robot, the boondocks, south park, lastman, spongebob, the fairly oddparents, drawn together, danny phantom, class of 3000, totally spies, teen titans, jimmy neutron, the fairly oddparents, dexter's laboratory, jackie chan adventures, and the proud family.
@@nottocleverxx614 I brought that up because on twitter I would see people talking shit about someone wearing a cartoon shirt. Like a lot of people sit up and wear sports hats, sports shirts, sports hoodies, and sports shoes but people that have an interest in cartoons are seen as childish or weird. It's just weird to me. Why isn't sports seen as a childish interest too than ? We all know people started having an interest in sports when they were literal children.
Dude this is so cool. So I was just making my cartoon based on Steamboat Willie because of the recent public domain status, and I also recently found your channel, so I subbed and watched a bunch of videos. Well low and behold, when I have RUclips auto playing the next video in the background while I’m animating, this video you made about animation happens to come on. Dude, what an awesome experience that was, thank you!
This has got to be one of, not just my favorite Patrick Cc vids but one of my favorite RUclips videos I've ever watched. This is a fantastic time capsule. I'd only argue that Toonami introduced most Americans to anime but adult swim popularized it by showing that there were more genres of anime than shonen/shoujo and giant robots. Absolutely great work man!
I find watching cartoons way more appealing and interesting and more hilarious as an adult. Ed Edd Eddy is definitely a reason to go re-watch your childhood. It’s just so much more fun to watch them being older and understanding the formula! 😇
I remember my mom always telling me when I was a kid “Hey they didn’t make Looney Tunes for you, they made it for me… they just made it to distract you” haha 😂
I think there's gonna be a pretty sizable shift from TV viewers to RUclips, so it would be cool to see some more adult cartoons use this platform to release shows. Something like athf or similar would easily work as a 10 minute RUclips series.
Would there even be anything that has the balls to show the effects of getting bit by a radioactive black man on RUclips? Apart from the fact that it's Big Tech, a lot of the creatives getting into animation are leftists. That's hyperbole; that's fact: Kate Leth, Raye Rodriguez, Rebecca Sugar, Dana Terrace, Ian Jones-Quartey, Noelle Stevenson, Molly Ostertag, Alex Hirsch, the list goes on.
Woah. What a trip down memory lane when you rolled out the Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and MTV shows. I forgot how many cartoons I loved growing up. I'm 26 now and feel like I cant watch more than 3 shows at a time lol
Gotta add in some corrections: Adult Swim didn't introduce the US to anime (it definitely introduced us to Cowboy Bebop). There was an already existing, anime-heavy block of time on Cartoon Network called Toonami, which existed since the mid-90's. Toonami also aired many Gundam shows, including Gundam Wing, G-Gundam, and Mobile Suit Gundam. But also aired Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Tenchi Muyo!, and more. AND on top of that, Toonami had a block late at night called "Midnight Run" where they would air, usually uncensored episodes of Gundam Wing.
As someone who genuinely loves animation as a medium and who tries to explain to people this exact thing, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'll drink some water to ya.
Dude I love your content, I feel like you should have a separate channel focused only on movies/tv show topics. I have really enjoyed binging them. Thank you for your work :)
This is a great doc and a great watch… But I think you’re undermining Toonami, they sometimes showed some risky programming AND they was the ones who brought anime to American audiences. Also, in the 90s: Space Ghost actually started as regular CN programming. I remember around like 97-99 seeing SG, Brak and Mortar in the early morning before the reg shows come on.
I knew I knew you from somewhere… I used to watch your hip hop related content and I have to say, this is a major upgrade. The sheer amount of research you put into this, wow. As a non-american, I now also have a broad overview of the shows (and the history behind them) I see all the time referenced in pop culture. Your editing style is very lowkey but effective, I love it. This was amazing, keep it up :)
Aww this is awesome! I've been slowly making my way through rewatching all of my old faves. It's fun watching them in order you pick up on overarching storylines and callbacks they make. You should do a video about the connection between Adult Swim & music. They embraced a lot of newer more eccentric sounds and styles like Flylo and Knxwledge who have only recently (past 10 years) been getting their due recognition despite producing for almost 10 years before that. Also the singles program circa 09' and beyond (probably still going on) put people onto a lot of new music too.
I turned 20 in march and I still love cartoons regardless of content and age demographic. I was raised on more on cartoons than live action. Animation is art and there is a beauty to see it on the big or small screen it's live. My parents don't see it as that neither some of my friends. But that's their opinion and nobody can tell I I like and can't like. I love Puppy Dog Pals because it's a show of cute dogs so yeah awesome video man.
Bro i found your channel last week and ive been binge watching since. I love the non biased approach and the random "stay hydrated" and "drink water" snippets. Youre a bad ass and multiple times now ive grabbed some water to stay hydrated 😂
What about Batman? That was definitely a dark cartoon. And for that matter, Superman. My mother liked Batman. We watched it together. She saw me watching it afterschool and then got interested in it. That definitely counted as an adult cartoon. It was dark and dramatic, almost like a dark movie or a cartoon soap opera.
Really appreciate how thoughtful you are fr. Appreciate the conversations you have over here a lot. Nothing wrong with being mindful of what we consume and put out in our universe. Hope yall have good days 🍀
My family still has cable mostly because my mom & grandparents like a lot of shows that aren’t on streaming. Since it’s not really in our budget to add more monthly payments to the already pricey cable bill, we don’t have any streaming services. That’s why I’m actually so grateful that Adult Swim still exists. It’s such a nice feeling at night to watch a bunch of my favorite shows that aren’t shown anywhere else on TV. Not only that, but all of the little bumpers and jokes they put in between shows makes the channel feel way less corporate, and like they actually care about their audience. It kinda sucks that all the other channels I grew up with aren’t the best anymore (Nick and CN are lokey garbage now), so I really appreciate that AS has stayed the same for all these years. Thx for the 🔥 vid Pat!
Im so glad I found out about adult swim, If it wasn't for them I would've actually never found out about many show's like cowboy bebop, rick and morty, flcl (fooly cooly), futurama, etc.
A study released a few years ago revealed that a lot of us who grew up in the 70s actually learned classic music and even opera and orchestra music from Bugs Bunny cartoons! "What's Opera Doc", for example and the representation of Leopold Stokowski! Pretty cool, huh!

I wanted to tear up at this it was so nostalgic. I grew up in the 90s and 2000s and the way you described the cartoon experience then was spot on! Loved this!
That last line... Superiority based on the fact that they're mature in theme and reject wholesomeness. This is a very subjective take and not at all based on the quality or the stories presented. I don't watch cartoons to connect with jerks that justify the evil in the world. I watch cartoons to escape from all that. I hate the category of adult animation and I'm glad there's a great number of cartoons that appeal to all ages. I hope that you can reconnect with that kid at heart because this biased adult oriented view is depressing and harsh.
SPOT ON Bro! This video is SUCH a trash take and comes from ignorance and a severe case of cynicism. If you can't enjoy kid-friendly animation in a genuine, non-ironic way then you've lost touch with your innocence and that's just sad. How jaded and disgusting a person do you have to be to not be able to enjoy animation unless it has extremely mature themes with vulgar humor, explicit language, and gratuitous violence? I'd say a pretty gross person.
I'd be interested in knowing which of the so called kids cartoons he has watched aswell. Rewatching some of them as an adult allows you to understand jokes that a kid would not get.
hmm he forgot to mention the entire Mtv cartoons from the early 2000's that were very sexual and violent... he also forgot to mention aeon flux and barely mentioned anime. It was very focused on American shows of Adult Swim.
Honestly it's crazy how so much of cartoons aren't "for kids" and yet still can be. I'm a 2000s baby and even though I couldn't watch all of these shows during their heyday, I still feel attached to them just like I was when I was in grade school during the 2010s and Cartoon Network's resurgence. This was a great video Patrick and I can tell you put so much effort into every video. I'm now subscribing. Keep up the good work! 👍
Old cartoons were crazy better cause people didnt care. Now parents are just over protective, and the worse part is they got a reason to be. Well not mine, mine are just 90s and 20s parents mixed together
And even before that you could find anime here and there on different channels. I remember watching the original Dragon Ball early early morning on Fox Kids, and later on Escaflowne. And even before that you had Speed Racer and…well, heavily edited anime like Macross series being blended to make Robotech, and G-Force that was created from Gatchaman.
Yeah, that's such revisionist history. Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade and Dragonball Z plus other anime was on Toonami first (hell Beyblade was originally on CN at first). And like people above mentioned there was even anime on Fox Kids and other channels as well.
@@awkwardsilence4427 yeah, he didn't mention all the Marvel cartoons from the 90's and all the Mtv cartoons from the early 2000s that were very sexual and super violent... he didn't mention BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES! He didn't mention Aeon Flux on Mtv Liquid either... it was VERY Adult Swim oriented... and very humor orientated.... I mean... wouldn't it be more important to mention more serious cartoons if you are going to talk about cartoons for adults?! There was also anime in the 80's like Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross and the other one) In my country the popularity of anime started between 1994 and 1996.
the "cartoons are for kids" attitude is entirely a western precept.. in many places animation is respected just as much as any other medium. because at the end of the day, that's what it is. it's a story telling medium like any other, you can use it to tell children's stories, or you can use it tell mature stories. it's not predisposed to any single genre of story telling. it's just that in the west specifically, alot of childrens shows used animation leading to this idea.
Man the 90s cartoons were everything to me in my childhood. Cartoons and cereal wrapped in a blanket on a snowy day without a care or plan for the day. Because you know you are going to be sheltered and feed for the next few years lol.
Here on the west coast we had channel 2 or, USA network. There was a program from 0600 till i think about 1200 called The Cartoon Express, 6 whole hours or cartoons. I didnt hangout for the whole time but cereal was mandatory.

Anyone remember the beginning of Boondocks (Season 1: Episode 5 - A Date With the Health Inspector) where we got to see a THICC muscle man (played by former Old Spice member Terry Crews)’s long cock?

You forgot about Toonami. Which aired right when kids got out of school and fundamentally introduced japanese Anime to us. So when adult swim started airing anime it helped blow the whole channel up on adult swim. The toonami run is one of my fondest memories.

Re-watching spongebob nowadays is quite the experience because you start to pick up on so many things you missed as a kid
Many of the fans as kids loved SpongeBob and Patrick, now they relate to squidward
I read in 2002 that Spongebob had a following with gay college students, and the show tended to give a nod to the community.
_"Hey Squidward! How the †fuck† are you?”_
Only the first 3 seasons had focus towards the "adults in the room" after that Nick's full corp lifeless child-safe content was on full throttle.

Courage the Cowardly Dog was always disturbing and Eerie. Especially how he was mistreated By the Old man if I’m not Mistaken.

Born in 90's ? welcome to the club
I just realized Futurama is still going!🤦🏾♂️

My cousin and I also used that for the Summer holidays when we found out that cool anime shows were shown past 10 pm too ( on some German tv channels). We had a lot of fun watching those shows.
You explained that so well and it was just nostalgia the whole time. Thank you for all of you work!

Ya. Nowadays, all I see is anime cartoons on TV . I hated it then in the 90s and hate it more now.
Adult Swim was so formative for me growing up, I obviously loved CN but at night I felt like I was watching something I shouldn’t be watching. Now anime is one of my favorite forms of media thanks to shows like Cowboy Bebop and Inyuasha.
"at night I felt like I was watching something I shouldn’t be watching"
Oh how that is a relatable statement. I remember sneaking out of my room to turn the living room TV on in complete darkness, with the volume low to not have anyone hear, and turning on Adult Swim to watch shows Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasha (I think one was at midnight and the other was at 12:30AM).
You forgot Full metal Alchemist!
Would you consider anime a genre of animated stuff for adults like ninja scroll?
Haha!

Haha I'm 27 and I'm wearing a "Cow and Chicken" shirt right now. Almost my entire closet has nothing but cartoon shirts 🤣
@@nottocleverxx614 I brought that up because on twitter I would see people talking shit about someone wearing a cartoon shirt.

They embraced a lot of newer more eccentric sounds and styles like Flylo and Knxwledge who have only recently (past 10 years) been getting their due recognition despite producing for almost 10 years before that. Also the singles program circa 09' and beyond (probably still going on) put people onto a lot of new music too.
what an awesome presentation and wave of nostalgia at the same time, well done man
I turned 20 in march and I still love cartoons regardless of content and age demographic.
Thank you for so properly articulating the history of animation. I'm so glad to see someone give as the accolades they so deserve.
Bro i found your channel last week and ive been binge watching since. I love the non biased approach and the random "stay hydrated" and "drink water" snippets. Youre a bad ass and multiple times now ive grabbed some water to stay hydrated 😂
Holy Patrick Cc dont let off the Gas pedal Quality Videos man Keep It Up
This was a great video. It speaks volumes that you were able to cover so much ground in just 20 minutes
Batman the animated series is goated watched it as a kid and rewatching it now love the dark and gothic vibes
Batman and Hing of the Hill were both critical in the 90s to show that cartoons could tackle adult themes maturely.
The golden era of cartoons actually ended in the 2000s
I thoroughly enjoyed my child years
I love your content man, you really out here carving your own path
Im so glad I found out about adult swim, If it wasn't for them I would've actually never found out about many show's like cowboy bebop, rick and morty, flcl (fooly cooly), futurama, etc.
A study released a few years ago revealed that a lot of us who grew up in the 70s actually learned classic music and even opera and orchestra music from Bugs Bunny cartoons!
"What's Opera Doc", for example and the representation of Leopold Stokowski!
Pretty cool, huh!
Even thought I was born in 2006 yet I grew up with Scooby Doo Where are you ? , Popeye , Yogi Bear , Flintstones, Thank you Cartoon Network and Boomerang!!
You mean boomerang.
@@gabrielosiuhwu5903 Boomeran and Cartoon Network *i lived in Poland so Different Cartoons were in Cartoon Network then in the American Cartoon Network
@@h2oguy740 as someone also from poland, Boomerang was where 90% of all the real old cartoons were
@@weegie3343 there were some in Cartoon Network too but yeah , most of them were on Boomerang
We never had Boomerang in Turkey. I watched those shows through CN.
HUGE fan of cartoons.. consider myself a living cartoon haha so im happy ya decided to basically do a history of american animation on here! Great job dude!! Subscribed for lyfe and always looking forward to the next video!💗
Where is ben 10 in all this history
I'm pretty sure he meant monetarily superior
another classic, you do not miss bro!
This was such a great and informative video. Great work !!
hmm he forgot to mention the entire Mtv cartoons from the early 2000's that were very sexual and violent... he also forgot to mention aeon flux and barely mentioned anime.
Cry Baby by Madonna îs inspired by Betty Boop thought ir was made for Dick Tracy movie from 90s
Old cartoons were crazy better cause people didnt care. Now parents are just over protective, and the worse part is they got a reason to be. Well not mine, mine are just 90s and 20s parents mixed together
Grew up in the 2000's but almost my entire childhood was cartoons, nostalgic af
Same here. Regular Show, Tom And Jerry, Adventure Time are so nostalgic now, I wish to see more of Regular Show 😭
@@AbdhullaNaaim Tom and Jerry is something that can unite even the ancient generations with the modern ones 😂

love you pat. I’m glad to see you succeeding even more now.. keep going brother, you deserve it 💜.
Such a fire vid
Toonami Existed on Cartoon Network before adult swim so I wouldn’t say adult swim is what introduced America the anime
@@awkwardsilence4427 this. I didn't have cable growing up and I still watched anime
Yeah, that's such revisionist history. Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade and Dragonball Z plus other anime was on Toonami first (hell Beyblade was originally on CN at first). And like people above mentioned there was even anime on Fox Kids and other channels as well.
well, Fred Ladd was the first guy who imported anime (astro boy) to western audiences, as early as 1964
@@awkwardsilence4427 yeah, he didn't mention all the Marvel cartoons from the 90's and all the Mtv cartoons from the early 2000s that were very sexual and super violent... he didn't mention BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES!
The way you Segway into your ads is amazing every time
Glad I was a kid when some of those iconic shows were in their prime 🔥
the "cartoons are for kids" attitude is entirely a western precept.. in many places animation is respected just as much as any other medium. because at the end of the day, that's what it is. it's a story telling medium like any other, you can use it to tell children's stories, or you can use it tell mature stories. it's not predisposed to any single genre of story telling. it's just that in the west specifically, alot of childrens shows used animation leading to this idea.
I loooove the way you do your ads!!😂😂 If I could buy everything you advertise, I would!
This idea is very well flushed out. You have a way of storytelling. Keep doing what you’re doing.
