    I think the worst part of the game is the incredibly small roster. More characters are coming in the future, but they really should have been in the game originally. 10 characters in matches with 8 just means you're going to see the same characters over and over again.

      Nintendo will release updates with at least 10 new characters. But I hope they generally improve stuff. For instance that 4 vs 4 online is actually possible.

    A bit of a nitpick I suppose, but the previous strikers games had brand new voice lines made specifically for the game- think along the lines of Wario yelling at you to “shoot the ball” or to “gimmie the ball” in classic Wario fashion or Mario taunting you while you had possession of the ball. While I believe NL still did good job incorporating the old voice lines from other games, I think the game loses some of its attitude compared to the previous entries. Arlo I’d highly recommend playing Mario Strikers Charged and seeing the comparisons between that one and Battle League.

      Like, they still produce fine video games, and there's nothing that says they NEED to allow more creativity back into Paper Mario or Mario Strikers or Mario Tennis. The major issue with this game is that there's just a lack of content that would make this game even more fun and enjoyable for a least a decent amount of time down the road. There's a small amount of characters, a small amount of stages to choose from, a small amount of gear and a small amount of equipment that can be used to design the characters before the soccer match. I feel as though this game would have been even more better if it had at least 20 to 30 playable characters, at least a decent amount of stages and gear to implement into the game, a decent single player experience, and at least a story mode for this game that can at least be somewhat interesting. This game doesn't feel like a 60 dollar game, it feels like at least a 30 dollar game with "SOME" interesting things implemented in the game. Mario Strikers Charged is such a better game just for the amount of stuff that it contains more than Mario Strikers Battle League. That's not to say that the game is bad by any means, but it's incredibly lackluster in content that isn't worth my money in my personal opinion.

    The lack of content is a big part of why I'm skipping this one. Got burned one too many times with these Mario Sports games on Switch. Maybe it'll turn out much better in the long run with more updates, but the online will be dead by then. So it's an easy pass.

    • @joshua9832
      @joshua9832 2 года назад +46

      I hate how all of the Mario sports games have this issue. Like sure, most switch games don’t have it, but the fact that these sports games are singled out is annoying. Why is every other Nintendo game finished when it comes out? Even stuff like animal crossing was pretty good at launch imo. Other games like arms, kirby, and Switch sports share this issue. That’s seven games, which isn’t a lot, but it still sucks that a significant portion of the library is taken up by these games, even if it isn’t that big of an amount. Take a game like Mario maker 2, smash, or splatoon 2 and use those as a free update kind of model. Those games had a lot of content and were held up by new updates. That’s what these games should have. Games that are mostly single player don’t suffer (thank god) but these games do for some reason:

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude 2 года назад +19

      I don't think the updates will really improve the game that much like some people are thinking.
      The characters are a big thing, but the stages are just aesthetics and music. I don't think there's gonna be any extra modes or something added like that.
      Battle League is very much finished aside from its lack of characters and stages.

    • @joshua9832
      @joshua9832 2 года назад +5

      @@DaNintendude I can kinda see that, but I feel like they could do a little more. A sequel needs to build off the ideas in the previous games. This feels like a new Mario strikers, when it should be a sequel to Mario strikers with new modes and such. I know plenty of people think the switch is nothing but ports and unfinished games, and while I don’t think that’s true (Wii u ports ‘mostly’ supplement new games), there are a few games, especially the sports titles, that lack substance. Overall I enjoy the exclusive library but that’s a whole ‘nother argument.

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude 2 года назад +11

      @@joshua9832
      My argument for that is that it's a new Strikers built from the ground up.
      Mario Strikers Charged had so much stuff because it was built off of the original GameCube game and reused a very large amount of assets.
      Battle League definitely should have more content but it makes sense why it doesn't. It's not built off of anything. They had to start from scratch.
      There are definitely a handful of smaller things that could improve the game a lot, and I hope the free updates add some of that in. But I think it's fully understandable why they focused on making the gameplay as solid and polished as possible instead of trying to evolve the series.

    • @UncleAlShow
      @UncleAlShow 2 года назад +30

      @@DaNintendude I'd still consider it unfinished, if only for the lack of characters/stages that are already in the code, just being held back. I agree though, the characters aren't going to add much substance to the game. Nintendo is making $20 games and selling them for $60.

    However, having played the online play test and then playing Charged the following day after, this game didn't cut it for me. The smaller field and new tackle system made the game more finicky and frankly more chaotic, but not in a good way. The flow of this game to me is off and there's not much room to breathe between each rush into either zone. Power ups appearing on the stage for pickup was not a good idea because players should be rewarded or punished based on their actions, not picking up an item box just from walking somewhere. When the game finally got updates for it to become a properly sized game, the playerbase was dead and now it's impossible to find ranked matches. I played the demo and frankly in my opinion it felt like a major downgrade from Stikers Charged on the Wii. That game felt faster and more fluid, the camera felt more zoomed in making the field feel like it had more room. And you talk about personality, having one character as a captain and the rest as sidekicks really was great. Dry Bones just warping the ball into the goal, Hammer Bro dropping hammers as you run to take out defenders and then hucking a bunch to wallop the goalie and knocking the ball into the now-empty net, the character theme songs for each captain, Strikers Charged had it all and this game just feels like a much more sanitized version of that to me. Again, just basing it on the demo and not the full game but I was excited when this launched and quickly realized it was not the game I was hoping for it to be. But like you said maybe free DLC later will help?

    The best way I can describe my feelings about this game is that this feels more like a Mario: Soccer than it is a Mario: Strikers. Most of the identity the series was known for has been sanded down or cut out entirely: no more rough dirt and grime, less explosive line-art, no more map variety, less character personality, less special abilities and toned down item-effects.
    They even sanded down the roster into 10 playable characters in a game with 8 player slots. The series' fun of inventive cheesy ways to score has been eliminated from the game; making it a lot more focused on esports, a decision that's strange for Nintendo to make considering their focus on party games and cracking down to deny any tournaments of their games.

Not all of us have a bunch of on line friends to play a season with but I got time after kids go to bed to play a few matches but the cup mode is just kinda bland compared to Kart or something like Subspace Emissary! From someone who played the first 2 games, even with it’s faults & setbacks, Battle League is a Mario Strikers that fits right at home w/ the rest of the series.
    The presentation is immaculate & everyone is unbelievably cute & charming w/ still that grit & angry attitude throughout, even when the artstyle’s cleaner overall & the gameplay especially is so stupidly deep & layered that it could spawn a competitive scene from how insane it is. It is insanely fun & an intense wall, but an intensely fun time learning all the tech & advanced moves BL has.
    The primary thing holding this game back for me is the roster & I feel that’s most people. Strikers used to have more characters across captains & sidekicks so BL’s roster is the smallest in the series & even doesn’t have obvious mainstays like Daisy or Bowser Jr., primarily Daisy. & when Strikers has a boatload of charm put into these characters & was what defined Daisy’s persona too, I do wish it had more character variety at the start. That & as you said, skimping on some of that multiplayer potential w/ no true 8 player online. The Cup Battles being it’s main ‘single player’ never really bothered me personally because Strikers since the start was always one of the most barebones Mario series in terms of content. BL effectively has the same exact amount of content as the Gamecube one & w/ how amazing the presentation & gameplay are imo, that’s not that big of a problem for me but I can understand why others would need more content to get them to come back to keep playing and/or if you don’t have many friends to keep playing. Charged at least had challenges for example, but still.
    Even w/ that though, even when I wish the roster was bigger & better, the multiplayer wasn’t stupidly restricted, I’m not only really glad Next Level got to make a polished & really deep but really fun Mario Strikers again, I’m glad the series has a viable shot at continuing to live. The fact my favorite Mario sports spinoff is back & it’s newest entry has that polish & attention to detail in gameplay & presentation, the 2 biggest aspects about Strikers, still leaves me w/ plenty of delight & happiness.

    Each character had their own particular musical theme, each one a different music genre (you all sure remember Luigi's), the characters used to look dirty because of all the explosions, and there were twice as many goal and defeat animations for all characters.

    I will say that for the most part, I do enjoy this more than the first one. I think the main reason for this is because with that one, I always found that the key to winning was just to keep passing to the team captain and spamming charge shots. At least with this one, not only can you not spam them, but I do find it a lot easier to score without relying on them.
    Although in all seriousness, when I saw that title card with Mario and Bowser wearing armor, all I could think about was how amazing it would be if they made a Mario pro wrestling game with similar outfit options. Not that Volleyball hybrid game they were planning for the Gamecube, but a full pro wrestling game with cartoon physics. They could even give the characters signature moves that fit them, like Mario would use a flaming powerbomb, that sort of thing.

Whether that be characters, stages, skins, whatever. Yeah, this game has the gear system with the coins, but something about that doesn't strike me as being substantial enough to want to play the game.

      @@sws212 Let me try to explain this for you in a way that you'll understand.
      Its called "love, heart, and soul". Those IRL sports titles deserve it too! Could you imagine a story mode in an actually finished modern madden game, starting out from either high-school or college football as a prologue or tutorial, before slowly making your way up the ranks, getting to know key players on whichever team you get drafted into over time and forming a bond with them to work better together, having characters back home to meet or having a determined rival to take down during future matches? What about winning your first superbowl? You CAN make an epic story out of that, and thats just plain old IRL football!
      Now imagine a cartoony game like this. I introduce Super Sluggers on the wii! That game literally had an entire plot surrounding a hostile take over of various ballparks. It was simple, but you got to run around, gather teammates, and eventually you even got to defeat Bowser JR and eventually Bowser in special boss games that really tested your limits as a player.
      You CAN do great fun things in a story mode for a sports title, they just choose not to because the big suits on top don't care, they just wanna grab at every penny they can and whip their employees raw just to release a game faster.

    While I'm over the moon that my favourite traditional sports series finally got a new entry, I'm still not paying $60 for this. What put me off as well was them getting rid of the sidekicks, being characters we rarely get to see outside of maybe avoiding/stomping them a couple times a game in the main series, many of these characters are really interesting/cool and them all having their own abilities AND being able to mix and match them made everything very interesting and the captain felt extra special.
    And as the games' been out for longer and more people, including youtubers, are talking about it, I'm also realising just how little variety there seems to be in this game, Strikers Charged had alot of stages, including some from the first game as well as a whole lot of brand new ones which all had their own gimmick, maybe there were pits of lava on the ground or the arena floor was muddy. There was even a stage where at the start of each round, 1 or 2 players on each team including the Captain, would get literally disintegrated by crystals.
    And besides the 8 sidekicks, there were 12 captains, 3 of which being unlockables and every captain had their own unique power up. Here, there only seems to be a total of 10 characters AND up to 8 of them can be active in a match at any time instead of the sidekicks. I don't know why Nintendo went from having an absolutely incredible character roster in Super Mario Party to now having absolutely tiny rosters. Mario Party Superstars, while an amazing game, when playing with my friends, it often became a race to who could navigate their cursor to Yoshi the quickest, while I myself don't find any other characters super interesting. IMO, Battle League should've started with at least 16 characters.
    At $20, I'd consider getting it if I was going to frequently be playing this with my friends, but I'm going to be skipping this and seeing where it ends up.

    Well, one thing I don't agree with is that characters have different moves. Everyone has the same move list. They are just stat lines. But the game still wants you to memorize a lot of things, at once. That is hard to sell, ngl.
    I will say this and you have done so too: This game is great competitively and I hope it keeps growing there. But the way it has released should be unacceptable. 'Free' updates shouldn't cut it anymore. I'd rather have a full-fledged game from the word go, and that the updates add to said game, instead of the kickstarter model. Where expansions are already promised to a game that has yet to be released.
    On the other hand, I am going to huff that copium. The competitive side of things looks to be very interesting and there's quite a lot to learn. And this is where I hope to find my fun with the game. To meet new friends, compete, improve, and maybe reach that top.
    But I doubt this game will last as long as mario golf super rush, if even that.

    I played Charged for the GameCube and loved it! When a new Strikers game was announced for the Switch, I was ecstatic! The art style associated with the games is amazing to study!! And man, the grit, the personality, all the cool little exciting things you could do with the characters!! I was looking forward to seeing how they would expand on what was already there. But this new game, from what I've seen, feels so... limited? And the vibe just doesn't seem the same. It's... clean??? During the big character kick cutscenes. Which doesn't quite fit. The original art style designed specifically for this game is messy- intentionally so. It's messy and raw and powerful and truly adds character to the series. It's a lil strange seeing how the art style became sort of polished when, imo, that's missing the point
    Where's my all time fav to play, Dry Bones?? Where's so many other iconic characters??? Why do we only have a handful of stages to choose from? Why lock so much away and drip feed us DLC instead of just making regular unlockables? I honestly feel like I have to wait until "the full game actually comes out" before considering buying it. It's so weird to me that this DLC stuff happens! It's one thing for DLC to include fun EXTRA stuff, but this isn't a big huge game to begin with, so the small amount of what we have feels like they gave us a Smash game but the base game is just the Melee, which is fine for a bit, while the DLC is the Story Mode, which can give more meaning to the base gameplay and break up the monotony just a bit. Like, yes, there's the core gameplay there, the game is about doing the sport and that's exactly what you can do, that's all well and good. But there's so much more you can do even with the limited stuff ultimately going on and I feel like they're just... sitting on potential. Granted. I understand crunch. I understand deadlines and that it's really heckin time consuming to make a game. But the decision to push these games out so rapidly in spite of that will consistently boggle my mind. At least this new Strikers game ultimately seems to play alright

    The contrast between this game and Strikers: Charged is STARK. Charged had a huge roster of playable characters, a challenging single player campaign with unlockable captains that felt like genuinely triumphant rewards, and most of all... A simple, addictive set of controls & mechanics to play with. I highly recommend giving it a try if you can get your hands on it.
    Sure, it was a bit more chaotic (you could score like, 8 goals at once out of nowhere) - so not as competitively viable. It was a PARTY game. But that's what made it fun. idk, playing through the Battle League demo tutorial and realizing how awkward, complex, and devoid of personality the whole thing was, on top of hearing that there's hardly a single player experience to be had... I'm really disappointed in how they soured the legacy of yet another beloved franchise. Even NLG couldn't save this spinoff.

    Mostly disappointed by this game compared to strikers charge, but overall still happy we got a new strikers games.
    This game has a lot less content and depth compared to charged. The roster is at 10, whereas the old game had 20 : 12 captains + 8 sidekicks. And each sidekick had their own unique special shot, and every character had their own unique dodge/tackle.
    I feel like there's less options because of the lack of special shots and tackles. But that may actually make the game more balanced.

This would not be acceptable in ANY other industry, but people like you just LOVE to excuse it. Free updates should be things like bug fixes and minor balance updates, not finishing the game a year down the line.

    Was thinking the other day about how a story/adventure mode would work and I just... could not think of anything.
    I think there's definitely _something_ they could do, but the way the game is, it's just kinda hard, ya know?
    Baseball works because the field is so big. There are lots of different mechanics and things to keep track of.
    Tennis is a small-scale sport that allows for loads of wacky challenges and bosses and stuff.
    Golf also has a lot of different mechanics and a very large field. You can easily set up challenges there too.
    But with Strikers? It's small scale like Tennis, but it's also a team sport. The mechanics are crazy, but there's a lot going on, and your goal is just to make goals. How do you incorporate a ring or target challenge into the game and make it feel interesting?
    I think the one thing that could maybe work are boss battles. Throw in a massive boss and make it so you have to strategically pass to other teammates so the bosses can't get the ball.
    But other than that? idek. In Sluggers a lot of the challenges are basically just teaching you to get better at the mechanics. They're like little minigames. But how do you incorporate that into Strikers without just making it feel like the tutorial we already have?
    So ultimately a story mode might just be something like a cup battle, but you unlock different stages and characters as you go. With increasing difficulty and maybe some very simple conversations with characters a la Tennis Aces.
    As much as I'd love a Strikers game with a story mode, it just doesn't seem like a very easy thing to do.
    --
    Regarding content, I think we should've had 2 more characters and 2 more stages at launch.
    By the time all the DLC is in, it's gonna be a pretty good amount of characters and hopefully a good amount of stages. But I feel like there should've been just 1 or 2 more in the base game.
    Unlike other people, I think the amount of characters and stages in the game is fine. it's more comparable to the original Mario Strikers than Charged. And you have to keep in mind that Charged was directly built off of the original GameCube game. They already had most of the character models and all their animations to build off of. Battle League is from the ground up, so it gets a pass imo. It makes it a bit disappointing, but it's completely understandable.
    My biggest problem is just that you can't customize fields without Nintendo Switch Online. I don't have NSO right now, and it was really upsetting to find out you have to go online to make a club. You can use club features offline, but you can't create them without going online. So I just can't do any of that.

It is very clear there is an extreme lack of contact in this game and it extremely hurts replay value. I don’t even want this game anymore. Maybe there could be like a main antagonist of some sort like maybe original characters that make up your team rivals. There could be a hub world so you could get from stadium to stadium and interact with people who watching the games.
