After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

I showed this to my wife and when I appeared at the end she said "please don't wave your finger...no!" Sorry baby, when the music flows the finger goes!
😅 Intiate double finger wave
After reading this and THEN seeing ya finger blast processing to the tune.....I might agree with her 😆
As a lifelong musician and NES lover, I say, thank you, and great list! I discovered a lot more cool tunes now! My favorite NES tune hardly anyone speaks of is in The Goonies 2, Ice Cave level. Even as a kid I used to hang out in that zone and just let the jukebox roll. 🤘Edit: after diving back in to the OST, the Cave theme is wonderful too, and quite a long musical phrase as well. Hope you enjoy!
@@ThatPunkYT That whole Goonies soundtrack is killer :)
Soundtrack to my childhood! Another deep cut, the intro song in Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus on NES is quite wonderful as well.@@BigOleWords
Fun trivia to know is that even though the NES was limited to only 5 polyphony, it was the most advanced video game audio chip of the early 80's second only to the Commodore 64. It had one DPCM (audio playback), 1 white noise, 1 triangle wave, and 2 programmable square wave channels. The square wave channels could do the standard tones but it also could do 1/4th tone and 1/8th tone which while thinner tones could mimic the sound of electric guitar riffs as an example. The white noise also had a mode where it could mimic Atari 2600 sounds albeit off key with certain pitches and double as a melodic channel. Lastly while the DPCM was limited to short audio snippets like drums, it could also double as melodic channel as well if the audio sample was of an instrument like a Slap Bass as in example in Sunsoft games. 🤓
Yeah I’m completely clueless on that stuff, but it sounds neat!
Names like Ben Daglish, David Whittaker and Tim Follin are super nostalgic for those of us who grew up with 8 bit home computers in the 80s like the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum and buying games for a few pounds each usually on cassette tapes. :)
And you can for sure tell that’s what they mostly composed for. Just a distinct sound style to the programming.
Joel Tel as well, he is the composer for Overlord, probably you have probably heard his masterpiece for Robocop 3 too.
As a British man im not proud of much; but I can say that without a doubt that the UK had some of the greatest 90's videogame composers.
Yes y’all did!
I noticed several of these composers did work for Commodore 64 games back in the 80s and early 90s. Ben Daglish, Rob Hubbard, Matt Gray, and David Whittaker are my personal faves.
The British are also responsible for the best rock music. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Black Sabbath.. the list goes on and on.
America started it, you guys perfected it!
Along with Thunderbirds, Allister Brimble made a lot of the music for Code Masters' NES games. Linus Spacehead's Cosmic Crusade is a standout, as is the high score track for Super Robin Hood.
Is that the same Thunderbirds? I have three Japanese guys as the composers.
@@BigOleWords I got them mixed up. He did the music of the Amiga release of Thunderbirds.
This kind of thing may be niche, but I am absolutely in that niche! A lot of great stuff here I've never heard before. Love it.
Niche gang! A lot of it I hadn’t heard til I started digging :)
This is a GREAT idea! Video game music is such a huge portion of my nostalgia but yet there are games I never played that have amazing music and I love finding those hidden gems. A good example I often use is Journey to Silius. I did not get to play that game as a child but finding the stage 2 music theme blew my mind. The most recent one I found was the ending to Adventures of Bayou Billy. Looking forward to adding to this list with your video. :)
Both those games have excellent soundtracks
Both of those games have amazing soundtracks, but are not into the “hidden gems” because everybody know those games (having played them or not). Journey to sillies tend to be on list top 10 of best soundtracks in the system!! And bayou billy is a Konami game famous for its difficulty and his good ost.
I’ve always appreciated the atmospheric vibes of Side Pocket. Another game that had surprisingly good music for an under the radar title is Codename: Viper. The level 3 music is my favourite.
Side pocket is perfect pool music. Code name Viper you can’t go wrong!
This rules. I love how much care was put into music for games that don’t really need it - like board games and sports titles. The sad tune that plays when you fire a player in Baseball Stars was my cell phone ringtone years ago.
Hahaha that’s amazing
Sometimes you just need to load up a game just to hear those wonderful tunes! Granted you might not like the game, but that music be jammin’ 🎶
Pictionary is the finest example of this. I never play except to hear that sweet track!
I love the 8th grader's first guitar solo sound on "Heavy Shreddin'" One of those games my grandma bought me that I didn't ask for. It's...something.
Haha that’s a perfect way to describe it!
Overlord.. I love that game! I used to keep on that intro for so long because that music was awesome 😌 by the way, if you press B while the intro is rolling, it alternates to a sequence where you can see some animations representing the game creators
I still have no clue what’s happening in that game. I need to read the manual and try again…
Pictionary and Desert Commander hit me hard with that nostalgia!
Both killer tracks!
This was wonderful, I put this video on at work and gave it a couple of playthroughs! I submit Legacy of the Wizard as a hidden gem of a game with a wonderful soundtrack, the Title Theme especially.
Legacy has amazing music that almost makes me not lose my mind with those block puzzles.
The drop zone tune was very good and felt cinematic and modern, overlord as well
Yeah that Dropzone is soooo good!
The cutscene music to Totally Rad and the first level of Gremlins 2 were always favorites of mine.
Oh yeah. And the opening to Zen: Intergalactic Ninja.
All good choices!
Dude, cool selection! The Overlord main theme is truly spine-chilling.
It's so good!
Gemfire has great 2 minute loops. The intro is one of my NES faves!
You'll might also dig Bandit Kings of Ancient China.
I almost included that but didn’t want to put too much Koei.
I bought RTK2 on Super NES brand new on a whim ('94ish?), and thus, my love affair with Koei was born.
Nigel Mansell...who knew! This is a killer set list dude. You REALLY know your stuff. Can always COUNT on your content, BIG ole BIRDs
Also, I think Heavy Shreddin is the first vid of yours I saw and thus am happy you included that
Had to do it!
I just realized that your live stream “starting soon” screen music is from the Pictionary game.. I was wondering where that sick catchy tune was from.
Yep, the greatest NES track of all!
Thank you James for the fun video !!! 🙂
Thanks for watching Jeff!
NES music not only expanded my taste in different genres of music but also gave me a rich palette of tricks and compositional techniques that help me with my own musical compositions today. I know this video is centered around the NES but another platform that doesn't get nearly the same amount of reverence and attention is the Master System/Game Gear. Despite one being a console and the other a handheld they both use the SN76489 audio chip except the Game Gear is capable of stereo sound. Although it's limited to 3 square wave channels and 1 noise channel there's some wonderful songs in those games. While the Japanese FM expansion unit on the master system has gotten more attention in the last 10 years and has a more complex Genesis type of sound I sometimes prefer the plain PSG compositions. 😇
I played a lot of SMS but am not as familiar with its soundtrack. One day I’ll focus more on it :)
You can totally tell that Jun Funabashi composed both the Jack Nicklaus game and TMNT. They have such a similar feel to them I knew it before I looked up his works.
For sure
The Jack Nicklaus music is really similar to TMNT music...makes sense both made by Konami. Also, the Pictionary music sound eerily familiar to something else I have heard before 😉
Yeah it definitely does sound like TMNT!
That was my immediate reaction. 😮
Yeah the sound of Konami games at the time, many of their games used the same soundfount (which I love)
Glad you included some games that may suck but still have some great tunes -- Cybernoid being the easiest example.
.
If I was to add some of my favorite from games not talked about enough, most from Ironsword I would list -- and because it's one of my all-time personal favorites, I'd choose either the title screen theme or menu music from Destiny Of An Emperor.
Destiny is a fine candidate for sure!
Love this!!! I’m a video game music junkie and man this is a solid mix! I knew it was gonna be a good one when I hear Blue Marlin to start ! Thanks for the upload!!
That Marlin track is so good :)
Watching Cybernator looks like I would probably rage quit. That game looks impossibly hard.
It feels like a home brew. Like there’s no recovery between dying and being right back in the mixer.
You know a game that really surprised me with how good the music was is Super Widget on the SNES. Really good stuff for such a throwaway licensed title.
Nice! I hate NES Widget with a passion but it too has a decent soundtrack
Oh man, I played the crap out of The Blue Marlin, and yet I didn’t even remember that until seeing this video. That’s awesome. Great stuff, as always, James!
Nice! That’s a game I want to spend more time with.
Awesome collection! The NES was and still is a big favorite console of mine thanks to its sound chip. (In Brazil, I've played it in clone systems in mid-1990s.) I'm very surprised to listen to games that I haven't heard of so far in this compilation... And I can see the difference between the way Japanese composers (with their own extra chips in the cartridge, such as Konami) worked differently than the European ones, that had a clear background on computer systems such as C64 when it comes to sound or noise synthesis, wave modulations, etc. I'm also a music composer who deal with electronic sounds sometimes, and I still love chip-tunes to this day and figure out who are the brave composers. Tim Follin, David Wise and David Whittaker are favorites of mine, as well as the Japanese ones who worked for Konami! Thanks for this incredible compilation and the credits! Hoping you could do the same for the Famicom music someday...
Thanks! Yeah maybe one day I’ll delve into the Famicom music library more deeply…
Hmm...you've covered an awful lot of the games I loved to death, and you've featured great music from lots of them. When it comes to music tracks that don't get a lot of recognition, my first thought goes to the absolute banger that is the theme from "Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode." And the theme song from "Golgo 13: The Mafat Conspiracy" was an even MORE awesome arrangement of the same song!
Golgo does have a great soundtrack!
Man this is an amazing video!! I’m a chiptune fan since the Atari computer days with songs from games like draconus, zybex, vanguard etc…
Starting this list with that blue marlin which is a song I didn’t heard before (with the exception of that one and palamedes, I had heard all the rest) was a great surprise!! I’m just dissapointed I didn’t see any Kazuo Sawa ost in the mix.
One very well know game but which everybody overlook its music, is super dodgeball specially with the vs/bean ball song which even includes guitar solo. If you ever dig into the famicom territory, the Kunio games have all amazing music.
Other often overlooked nes ost are Yo Noid, Freedom Force, Jackie Chan kung fu, and Eric the Viking. This last one has a song called ‘peace in the harbor’ that even has the sound of waves and seagulls!!
I’m surprised you chose that smurf song, I’ll usually go to the swamp song :)
Other cool song, from a shitty game is stage 2 (or 3, can’t remember) from the Wolverine game.
Edit: typo due to stupid autocorrect xd
That’s the second Erik the Viking suggestion, a game I’ve never heard of! Thanks!
@@BigOleWords no problem!
Btw I forgot to mention Super Spike V’ Ball and also the nes got ton of cool ost on cowboy games: Gun.Smoke, Cowboy Kid and Lone Ranger got cool osts, also the awful Godzilla game.
Something with some of my metalheads friends (including Japanese and Brazilians -we all live in Japan-) we do meetings where aside of talking about Metal, much of the time we dedicate to talk about video game music specially from the nes snes era!
Also, I have listened lot of famicom osts in search of songs for my fangames. Tecmo did always amazing osts on the Tsubasa games (even better than the snes versions!) and how to forget Cocoron! There’s also Konami’s Moai-kun which use songs from popular Japanese tv shows.
You should start your own DJ service, instead of spinning vinyl you should be swapping NES carts!
The worlds least reliable Dj setup!
Nice to see Destination Earthstar on the list! I had that game and eventually came to love it...there's definitely a learning curve and it took a while to figure out what you're even supposed to be doing! But once you get it, I had a ton of fun with it!
Journey To Silius is one of my favorite soundtracks, but I think most folks know that one is good. How about Rescue: The Embasy Mission? There were a few jams on that one, that really set the mood for the different sections of the game. Wouldn't have been half as good of a game without it!
Yeah I still have no idea what to do in Earthstar!
@@BigOleWords there's a lot to it, between the space combat, planet exploration and eventually getting to the side scroller shooter levels. I don't think I ever finished it, and it was a bit of a time commitment to play, but I had fun with it!
GI Joe 1's base theme is a bop
Yes it is!
Sweet tunes, you did the right thing and let Overlord finish it of. Such a sick song.
I can recommend to dig in to the kunio kun games if you wanna do a follow up one day.
Yeah I’m obsessed with that Overlord track, so good!
Okay, when I mentioned Destination Earthstar in your stream tonight, I had no idea you features it in this video.
I always did like the music, though.
Haha and that's exactly why I didn't want to play it! I still have no idea what to do in that game.
@@BigOleWordsthat's fair!
And just got to Overlord lol
You definitely went out to find ALL the good ones!
Destination Earthstar I'd say had some good ideas, but was limited by the hardware (as much as any first person dogfighter was on the NES).
Haven't played in ages, so couldn't describe it exactly, but I remember it being cool going from the cockpit to a side-scroller like Gradius when going down to the planets.
I just always liked games that mixed a variety of play styles. Nowadays that seems insane fromba design standpoint, but since everything was so experimental and there weren't any rules, you ended up with some interesting combinations.
It comes from pictionary!!?!! 🤣🤣😂🤣🤣 I always wanted to ask. great video! Cheers
Yep! That’s definitely where this video idea originated :)
A great idea, i love you friend.
Konomi's lone ranger (best light gun sequences on the system) had some bangers. Criminally overlooked game.
Edit: Right as I posted, Jack Nicholson came on, a game I've never played, and immediately I recognized Funabashi's work, he composed for Lone Ranger. I love his unique, distinctive sound.
Ha, James used the Pictionary ad I posted on the discord as the thumbnail.
That is the one! I found it when I was looking for the Pictionary box art
Thanks that's was relaxing I love NES music
I almost called it something like that, but a few of them get me too hype to be relaxed!
@@BigOleWords8-bit 16-bit music are my favorites in long drives so I don't mind som hype now and then
TIL Cybernoid got a NES release with a completely different soundtrack by someone else. Looking at the Wikipedia page it turns out Jeroen Tel only did the C64 version. Wild!
The Overlord guy? Sweet!
The number one example for me is probably going to be the Silver Surfer NES ost. Not a good game, but music is amazing.
Outside of NES, I'd say Monsters Inc for the GBA has some insanely good music. Shaq Fu had some great ost as well.
Silver Surfer is a good one, ol’ Follin!
@@BigOleWords It's like 8 bit shredding
Boy and his Blob, All the individual themes from Maniac Mansion, Mega Man 2&3 , Vice Project Doom.
All great soundtracks!
Nice 👌 My all-time favorites almost all come from Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu!
That game is amazing
Most of these are pretty obscure, but they're good. I'd like to see you include the Level 1 theme to Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister 6, the main theme to Gyromite, and what the heck I know this isn't THAT obscure, but the level 5 underground theme from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 isn't as well known as the rest of the songs from that game, probably because it's not easy getting to level 5!
I don’t know about that Sinister Six track. Woof!
@@BigOleWords Hey, I like that song! It's a good thing music is subjective like any other art form.
Man, there just isn't much good to report on that NES Spider-Man game, is there? It's bad all around lol
For some reason I always thought the Pictionary song was Krang's Theme from Ninja Turtles! haha great list!
That would’ve been amazing, so funky that Krang :)
God damn James, overlord fucking slaps!
I know right?!
I wanted to recommend Nigel Mansell and Overlord (from fellow Dutchman Jeroen Tel) and then they are at the very end of this video. LOL.
He also composed the soundtrack on C64 for Cybernoid (better than the NES version) and Cybernoid II (and way more of course).
Great minds think alike!
I'm so glad that the 70s adult flick funk track from the Last Crusade is in there 😂
Thought of you!
@@BigOleWords 🤣
That bass is just NAAAASTY
That Overlord game. Haven't played it and doesn't look like my sort of thing gameplay-wise but damn it has style and polish for sure. :O
I cannot figure out what to do. One day I’ll read the manual and give it a full review
Not your usual style but a good video nonetheless.
12:23 Ooooh. Now that's a bop. Of course it would be Tim (and Geoff) Follin.
Oh yeah, straight 70s porn music right there.
NES music is my big weakness. There really is nothing like it.
Indeed!
The main (only?) stage theme from Gyruss goes WAY too hard. Konami was working some serious black magic back in those days with their composers. Highly recommend giving it a listen.
Yeah they were!
Dig the selection.
Thanks bud!
Pictionary has no excuse to slap that hard.
No it does not!
All of these tracks are panty dropping bangers!❤
Ain’t that the truth!
Pictionary rocks!!
Yeah it does!
Great tracks! What about Arkista's Ring underground theme? It kicks so hard!
Yes it does! I talked about that game in my Zelda Clones video and specifically highlight that track. So good :)
Just a few of my favorites:
Anything by Konami/Ultra
Anything by Capcom
Magician
Abadox
Journey to Silius
WURM
A Boy and His Blob
Arkista's Ring
Choujin Sentai Jetman
Conquest of the Crystal Palace
Dragon Fighter
Dragon Spirit

Flying Warriors
Gun-Nac
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu
Maniac Mansion
Moon Crystal
Power Blade 1 & 2
SCAT
Shadow of the Ninja
Silver Surfer

Again, just to name a few...
All solid games and soundtracks!

Lotta good stuff.
I can listen to this shit all day long lol. 😂
I know I made it, but I have been listening to it all day!

Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And love retro NES games !
Awesome, glad you like it :)
@@BigOleWords Thank you for your reply ! If you are interested in the nostalgic game culture of Japan, please subscribe to the my channel !
Some of these I weren't super familiar with. No shame in waving that finger. The Overlord main theme is pure 1970's prog rock.
Yeah it is!
Tim Follin is a genius
Yeah he is!
Check out the Stage 2 music in Metal Storm
Metal Storm has plenty of jammers!
It's a very good list. You may like Alien³, it uses the same sound driver of Overlord and the tunes are great. RoboCop 3 main theme is probably too well known to feature here.
It's also worth to give a listen to Geoff Follin who is often overlooked, I would suggest Tom & Jerry and Terminator 2. Also, go listen to him and his brother simply put arcade Kiwi Kraze/New Zealand Story to shame with their NES version. Tim also did wonders on Sky Shark, but that's no surprise.
Rob Hubbard didn't work on many NES titles but The Immortal is pretty good imo.
Glad to listen to some Neil Baldwin here, I love his style and the quality of his drums, and how he renders seagulls and crickets. Magician and Erik the Viking are worth listening, and The Jungle Book is so catchy and derpy.
I hear Jon Dunn allegedly plagiarized some of his work, but his job on Darkman is impressive.
There is a minor typo, the composer for The Smurfs is Alberto Jose Gonzalez.
Keep on flowing with the chip vibe!
Whoops on the Smurfs! I tried not to go to heavy with Follin or Wise as they both did a lot of obscure soundtrack work. I don’t know why but a lot of the ones you mentioned didn’t quite resonate with me. Maybe I’ll go back and give them another listen :)
@@BigOleWords no worries. It's a matter of taste in the end, there's no real ultimate list that fits all.
Glad I found some new stuff to go and listen to. I'd never have gone for the fishing game!
Pictionary... slaps?!? Huh!
As for recommendations: Probably not as 'off the beaten path' as you were looking for, but Zanac has at least six or seven slappers and its psuedo-sequel Guardian Legend has a bunch more. Love the Compile 8-bit tunes!
Don’t forget Gun-Nac in that mix!
@@BigOleWords Yeah! I still need to get me a ROM (through totally legal means) and play some of that!
Bad News Baseball. Great chiptunes & great game even if your not a baseball or sports or enthusiast.
I know I listened to Bad News but now I can’t think of the music at all!
You seem like a man of taste thus far, so I'm going to hope The Forest (Lvl. 1) from Sword Master is here 🤞
Edit: BUT!.. 😧
Sword Master has a killer soundtrack, but even before I played it, I expected it to have a killer soundtrack ;)
Big shout out to Neil Baldwin. Severely underrated composer! He only worked on a handful of games. I wish we had more music by him to enjoy!
Agreed, great tunes!
I note no mention of Maniac Mansion. Ball status? Dropped.
I don’t know how unexpected that game is ;)
@BigOleWords fair enough. Make an honorable mention video? I'm sorry I was harsh just then.
If you make a part 2, be sure to include some of these:
Tecmo World Cup Soccer (this one is a must hear, sounds like Megaman music):

Dragon Wars:

Fire n Ice:

Not sure why I left out Tecmo World Cup, that fits the bill perfectly!
in other words: deep cuts
More like “killer” cuts. Amirite?
I'm more inclined to like the SNES music where we had real musicians like G.W.A.R. and Green Jello!
"Real musicians." Lol.
Hahaha you got me there!
Great video! Would have loved to hear a little commentary from you before each clip as to why you like it or what it evokes for you. I’ll have to look and see if I can download some of these for my music collection
I wanted it to be more of a mixtape than a review, more for listening than opinion :)
You 4got Solstice my dude!? 👍🍻💥🍻
Impossible ;). That's one of my all-time favorite games but I think you'd expect it to have great music...maybe. I reviewed it if you haven't seen that one: ruclips.net/video/O1GuYEFItZ4/видео.htmlsi=jY2wFbO3_QyQaSsA
Yep sometimes the music is the only good part of certain games heh. Game music got so much better once composers came into it, before that it was all "Camptown Races." filler.😄
Haha too true!
Talking about deep cuts 👌🏼
As deep as I dare cut!
How you gonna start with such an absolute mint banger!! 💯 Can not believe I have never played the Blue Marlin!
I really dig the OST to Ice Hockey on NES 🏒
