- Hi guys! Welcome to lesson 69 of Learn That Solo! Today we look at how to play the solo from 'Under A Glass Moon' by Dream Theater.
Holy moley. This was the most epic lesson yet! It has a gentleman's 8 sections. If you take it slowly and work through the sections at a sensible pace you should be able to get this one in time. It is an advanced solo so if you're below an intermediate level... TURN BACK NOW!
If you wish to request a tab/guitar pro file for this song, please send an email to learnthatsolo@gmail.com and we can discuss further.
Take care guys! Happy shredding!

It took forever dude. I cried a few times during.
When I listen to Chris all my talent is elevated to the six degree. Some player are so good you never want to play again. But you are so talented teacher you plant the possibility of the impossible. Your so incredibly important for my guitar growth. All love to your wonderful family and friends.
Agreed. I was so eager to learn from this guy!
Sorry I never responded to this comment. Thanks heaps dude.
Absolutely!
that sweep to sweep/tap is a practice ender....
Thanks dude. You're a lovely man.
Unbelievable video for an unbelievable solo, you actually make it seem achievable which you can only get from good teaching. Like how much you break it down, and I appreciate the effort that went into making this
"...not cool enough..."
Actually, I think the fact that you can fake a vibrato bar flutter on a fixed bridge guitar and still have it sound fucking great is pretty damn cool. AWESOME work, man.
Yes! Someaone else noticed it too! That alone is awesome
"if you're below an intermediate level... TURN BACK NOW! "
Challenge accepted
High five man, one of the best renditions I've ever seen (tried myself too but still not clean and perfectly articulated as yours), considering you've done it also on a fixed bridge guitar. Love in particular the infamous sweep-megasweep-tapping section, flawless.
Really really helpful, man! I have the Jam With Dream Theater DVD from Lick Library, and your lesson is much better than Andy James' for this song. His tutorial skipped notes in a few licks, and sometimes he'd get a note completely wrong. Yours is dead-on. That big sweep is a monster to get clean.
You got the same dynamics without a a pick and without a floating tremolo. Fantastic job
It had to be lesson 69 because this is an orgasmic solo...
The part you are talking about at 20:00 isn't a blues style bend. It's a minor third hammer on and pull off at the 11th and 14th frets on the b string. He's also fluttering with the tremolo on every 11th fret note, but obviously that aspect of it isn't applicable to your demonstration for lack of a tremolo system. Still, I appreciate that you're making do.
this is my favorite solo, thanks
19:15 you actually have to re hammer onto all those notes. Honestly playing how it is on the recording is so much harder and hardly sounds different so I just play it how Chris does
Great lesson! I'd like to point out 2 minor details, though. In the first section, at 0:18 in the video, I clearly hear Petrucci going to that D# on the 6th fret of the 5th string after a C# (4th fret, 5th string) and not after an E (7th fret, 5th string), like you said. I've listened and slowed down various versions, including the studio version and the one that he plays the solo all alone on RUclips. So, to conclude, after the little bend of the C# on the 6th fret of the 3rd string, he goes: B (4th fret, 3rd string), then 6th and 4th frets on the D string (G#, F#), then 6 and 4 on the 5th string (D#, C#) and concludes on the D#. All the notes I mentioned are 16th notes, except for the last D#. Also, in that video, right after that D#, he goes to the D# two octaves above, at 0:19 in the video, (16th fret, 2nd string) and starts the analyzed Emaj7 section (G#, E, D#, B) repeated in the 3 octaves. Whereas, I saw you using an E major chord starting with the G# on the 13th fret of the 3rd string. From what I hear, it's just a D# to start the "analysis" of the Emaj7 chord. I hope I made sense and have a nice day!
learned it in 2 hours thanks to this video, you are a great teacher!
2 hours... you probably play it like shit!!
I practice without the pick too, like this guy. It works pretty well for this song.
Dude.... no words- just, DUDE!
I don't even see how it's possible to play the part at 0:32 that smooth.
20:00 marking my spot... this is tuff! very good tutorial ;)
No matter how well you do something, there'll always be some idiots on YT (in this case, 9) trying to pull you down by disliking your video. This was awesome!
Excellent lesson! Very good pacing and repetition for anyone to learn well.
That sweep part is extremely hard, one of the most widest I've seen.
you're a master!
before watchin this video i tried to learn to solo couple of times but i gave up everytime ,
after watchin this video tut , i was like , wtf this solo is not that hard (except those sweep taps which are still pretty hard for me)
awesome vid dude , thanks a bunch!
insta subscribed.
Great beginners song
The runs at 6:00 and 23:00 are the only parts that give me problems, I just don't have it, it's not coming together, it's not clean... Should I kill myself?
your comment was 5 months ago-did you get them down eventually?
Fucking hell, of course not. Do some exercies, practice.
3 years after can you do it now
He's dead
@@BarryMckokiner001 SHIT
so uh, that was insanely fucking good.
You're one of my favourite tutorial guys. This is a timelessly useful video. I really appreciate the way you segment the solo into phrases and are intricate in your demonstration. You're a guitarist's guitarist.
Outstanding dude! Even those parts that were originaly made with the trem... you sounded just like the same (0:56) - btw, my wife just hates when I do such sound (LOL). She says it sounds like a mad cat.

Hi, Nice lesson. Have you ever thought about doing a lesson on the solo from Voices by Dream theater?
Not weird man. I use my nails to play a lot especially because I'm always losing my picks. Although I use my index fingernail. Awesome playing btw. I subscribed.

Have you always held the pick between your thumb and middle finger?
I searched for it but it was not there.what is it? Pick

Without a pick too
Wtf
You nailed it.
Literally. dammit.
How in the world can I get the last part of section 2. So fast I can't even do it less than half speed.
Did you change the pickups of that Schecter?
Aweeeesome
Can you please do the first solo to Bite the Hand by Megadeth?
Plz do The count of tuscany by Dream Theater!
Deathcore: combination of the complexity and the style of death metal and the breakdown and rhythm of metalcore and creates deathcore. A fusion genre that often can get complex solos and riffs in general
Except this isn't Death Core
+Venom Stains it was mentioned in the video
Do a re-do please...with tabs
and a whammy bar
I know how to play the initial arpeggios and the first shred almost perfectly on Eugenes Trick Bag from crossroads, its not perfect but its the same speed and I hit almost all the notes, knowing that song, do I have what it takes to play this, or is it a waste of time? I also know almost the entire tornado of souls solo, I do it perfectly just missing one out of i think 6 arpeggios and the closing shred
Does anyone know how to get that sound ?
am i crazy or where is pick going at around 0:50? he just seems to suddenly start holding one after tapping
oh nevermind, he's not using one at all... Thats insane
You are a Monster guitarist! Do you play with a band?
Yeah I know some of those words
section 3 though
Can you reveal your amp settings please?
Can you make another lesson with the song In the name of God
