Correct Rowing Machine Technique

  • Here is a video I have put together aimed for people who have never used a rowing machine in a gym before or maybe bought a cheap one for their home. It is a basic step by step without the technical lingo on the right way to use the machine including breathing, posture and where to put your feet in the straps.
    The rowing machine is fantastic to work your whole body and great cardiovascular workout so if you haven't used one before I certainly recommend you try it.

    Wahtever (heavy) cardiotraining I ever did: I never exhale and inhale at those moments everyone advices but I do the exat opposit naturally. Always that way and it never felt better. I wonder of the body just needs a constant airflow rather than a timed in and exhale. there is probaly more then enoygh oxygen in your blood to perform and one exhale or inhale at some moment does not matter as along as you do it enough/repetitively

  • @kimbow

    I like that this is quick and simple. But the technique here is incorrect. All professional rowing coaches recommend you initiate the pull-back with legs, then back, then arms. And for coming forward; your arms come forward first, then your back hinges forward, then legs bend. The sequence is important for power and health.

    I like what you're trying to do here - teach people who have NEVER rowed before some basic technique. But this video should not be used for people who want to improve their rowing technique.
    What you SAY is correct but what you DO in the demonstration is not correct. From the catch it should be: legs, arms, arms, legs.
    In your demonstration you are doing legs, arms (correct) but then bending your legs before you have released/ straightened your arms.

      Thank you for stating this, Katrina. I did a bit of rowing when I was a teen (maybe a couple weeks) and I remember them saying that you should move your arms back to start position before you start moving your legs, else you might hit your knees with the paddle. If you do that, you lift the paddle up and potential dip it in the water which would be bad.

      rowing 'machine' technique for the sake of exercise, not to shave a few seconds of your row up the river every morning, get over it

    • @axisofpeter
      @axisofpeter 5 лет назад +2

      @@merelymaterial Well, if you do this while rowing, you will end up in the water because your blade is going to get stuck in the water and throw you out of the boat. So, as the commenter said, this is not the way to row if you are practicing for crew.

  • @Serenoj69
    @Serenoj69 7 лет назад

    I have the exact same machine. One of the wheels needs to be replaced but boy is it difficult! But...a very nice trainer, I notice little difference with the Concept2 een though the Concept2 has 10 levels and this 1 which you be in command of (more power is more resistance). This Dunlop rower can be had second hand over here in NL for 100-150 euro.

    • @Serenoj69
      @Serenoj69 7 лет назад

      Well I have plenty of experience on the concept and I disagree. I found it surprising how close it came to the concept2. I am no slouch, I am a well trained person so my standards are not low which would be a good reason to dislike this rower in the first place. If you put in too little power, the resistance is low too and you'd be disappointed.
      I would compare it to level 8 on the concept2 and that seems pretty decent to me. But: to each their own! I am going to buy an Infinity100 or may be Concept2 modelD mainly for the on board computer and the better positioning of the feet.

  • @julzhallmann5411

    • @breathefitness
      @breathefitness  3 года назад +1

      I wouldn't over think that part to much to be honest. Start with a light resistance and work for a time that suits you and just build up your plan overtime :)

  • @tdekoekkoek

    You need to get your body swing over your legs before coming up to the catch. You do not have sufficient body angle at the catch which makes you open with the back. Also as for breathing, while that is a common belief, Olymic gold medalist Xeno Mueller and the world's fastest lightweight indoor rower, Stephanson inhale during the drive and exhale coming up to the catch.

    I have a soft but strong posture support I just got because I slouch a lot from getting T boned in a car accident a year ago. Would that be a good idea to wear while using my rowing machine? At least until my over all posture improves?
