The actors playing the turtles were the only thing I liked about the movies. 😂 I actually felt like they got their personalities down pretty well. And like you said, they had great chemistry, and they are the best part of the movie. If we would’ve seen MORE of the turtles through out the movie, and focused more on their relationships with each other instead of focusing too much on April, we could’ve grown more attached to them and gotten past the poor design choices. Also, it would’ve been cool to see them use more martial arts and ninja techniques, but they’re massive size made the scenes where they actually fight look weird. I don’t mind that they have some muscle, they’ve always had some muscle, but it’s their overall size that puts me off. There were a lot of missed opportunities in these movies that could’ve saved them from being as bad as they are.
For what they are, I actually don’t hate the movies, I found them fun and entertaining. But they’re still bad. And they just had potential to be so much better. 🤷‍♀️

The Michael Bay Ninja Turtles failed because the first film became a prime example of "Clueless Hollywood changing things that didn't need to be changed", and the sequel also suffered as a result. And what's remarkable is that Paramount probably wouldn't have redesigned Sonic The Hedgehog if not only because of the fan backlash to the original Sonic design, but how the similar fan backlash to the Bay Ninja Turtles' designs eventually doomed that franchise.

To me it's pretty clear they didn't have a full plan or vision for this franchise (or at least it feels like it) and it felt like some other Hollywood reboots- embarrassed of the source material so they tried too hard to "fix" it while also removing almost all the charm in the process. From the story and backstory changes of the first movie, to the designs of the Turtles, to the way the second tried to course correct and appeal to 80s cartoon nostalgia. Just feels like they didn't know what to do with the characters in the movies at times.

    • @klankorbus7874
      @klankorbus7874 2 года назад +13

I think that's part of the reason the second failed so spectacularly.
I don't like the first but it was commercially successful and had stiffer competition going up against Guardians of the Galaxy and it had suprising legs. Clearly some people liked it...I know they did because I got into heated debates on message boards at the time. Most admitted it wasn't that good (blaming it on the troubled production) but had faith they were building up to something in sequels like IDW reincarnation and more edgy ninja battles. I imagine it was pretty shocking when the trailers for the sequel hit and it was clear they had no plan and had ditched all the stuff they thought was going to be expanded on.

@@klankorbus7874 While I agree that many people do seem to like the first movie (recently someone in the UK did life size statues of the designs from the reboots and despite them being creepy as hell looking to me based on the photos, most people could still identify them as the Turtles and got a kick out of them) I honestly think that the first movie did so well due to the brand name and maybe even fans just not caring about the numerous changes or wanting to give it a fair shot anyways (the latter was my reasoning to go watch it). The sequel could have also done well if it had a better release date since it was aiming for more mass appeal to fans of the original cartoon but I think what mainly killed it was them trying so hard to course correct and put in characters for the sake of fanservice that it gets in the way of telling a good story.

It never occurred to me until you pointed out how we don’t really get to see how the turtles interact with each other and have actual character development, also considering Micheal Bay helped with the movies it makes sense that they have so much to them considering the close detail in Transformers and at least they seemed to realize that they was too detailed. ‘Casey’ is basically like ‘April’ from the first film wanting more from their job and trying to dive into something they don’t understand. Also I’m confused as to why the turtles allowed ‘Casey’ to see them if they we’re trying to stay away from human eyes, the only thing that connects them is Bebop and Rocksteady but they was mentioned until ’April’ talks about their mutation. I also agreed that the turtles vs Bebop and Rocksteady was really cool and it definitely would be interesting to see what they would’ve looked as humans but at the same time it wouldn’t be TMNT if they were human lol. I too was born in 2002 and grew up with the 2012 version and I gotta say the 2012 show was so good actually being able to see their personalities and how they act when April wasn’t around and it really gets you emotionally attached (Splinter 🥺) there is the 2018 show as well but I haven’t seen enough of it to really know how good or bad it is.

I grew up with the 80's series, and I actually like the '14 and '16 films. But I do see why they're not everyone's cup of tea.
For instance, take the "Any last words?" scene in '14. Up to this point, Raphael has been the emotional fulcrum of the film. So, with the team hanging on to a collapsing tower, falling to their presumed doom, Mikey admits he didn't understand the ending of "Lost" (really, who did?), Don admits to being the one who messed with the Pop Tarts...and then Raph goes on a stemwinder of soliloquy, ending with an "I love you guys so much!"...and then...
*record scratch* "Raph? We made it. Are you crying?"
    What? Just, WHAT?
When you set up a catharsis, and instead you go for comic relief, you've just completely undercut the payoff. You've taken the emotional climax of the film, and made a shaggy dog joke out of it.
That's one thing I can name, that they got wrong in '14. Another, was keeping the leads offscreen at the beginning, for as long as they did. That CAN work, depending on the story you're trying to tell. But you need the right material to pull it off, and this...wasn't it.
It wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. But it also wasn't nearly as good as it should have been.

Allegedly Paramount fought the makers of the Sonic movie over the design citing that the first TMNT reboot movie made a lot of money in spite of the backlash over the designs.
I would argue there's more precedent for the turtles designs though. It's a mash up of two pre-existing versions of the turtles and the franchise started with a darker more edgy tone so there was some belief you could go further with the designs. Sonic has always been a cartoon that was never supposed to look like a real hedgehog.

I think the turtles should come back with a new live action take, but this time test the waters. Make it a stand alone film, leave a slight hook for a possible sequel, and write a decent story with fun characters and a slightly serious tone to it. It doesn't have to be about saving the world, the scale could be slimmer yet more personal (like rescuing April or Splinter). Make sure to focus on the Turtles being a family, get some cool action and you got yourself a Turtles movie.
The Michael Bay films seemed like they had an idea but didn't know how to follow through. Should they make a serious Turtles film or a silly one? Should it be focused on April or the Turtles? Will it have continuity or are we experimenting? Just seems like they didn't know what to do, hopefully with this next film they learned better.

@@crazykiddd4992 the whole thing. Michael bay shouldn't of been attached to it and he got mad backlashed and killed the franchise. He's still attached and I wished someone that has real talent and writers would of got those rights. Nickelodeon is not the studios that should have it. Nothing about those new ones are cool and it did have funny moments and have a one part that was cool. But the movie wasn't good to me..

I gotta say I grew up with the 80s turtles, and the greatest tmnt movie ever in 1990. The 2012 reimagined tmnt was fantastic! Ciro Nieli did this show justice. You could tell he loved these characters and the story. There's tons of little Easter eggs in it too. Even the things he changed worked. I absolutely despise the Bay turtles.

The shredder's suit in both films look awesome, especially the Mechanized suit that would've been the perfect modern super shredder, too bad these designs will never get rendered properly to action figure form.

OG fan of the originial turtles here. 2014 movie was "ok" to me. If anything, I did find it cute that they tried to make a spiritual successor to "T-U-R-T-L-E Power" with "Shell Shocked" at the end of the movie. The sequel really did feel like a better movie, but it was clear even when I saw it in theaters that it was too little too late to let the series have a 3rd entry.
Great video overall! Hope you continue to grow on this platform!

Actually, having Casey Jones be the POV character for a TMNT movie sounds pretty cool.

This radiants the same energy of watching the american Godzilla movies, where you only see him like 5 minutes out of the whole frickin movie

I am an old school 87 turtles fan and I absolutely loved the 2012 series as well as the first two 90s movies. The people behind the Nick show loved the turtles and it showed. They should be the ones along with Eastman to bring us a new movie. The "Michael Bay" films were unbelievably meh.

I also grew up with the 2012 series and I have great memories watching that show. Funny enough, it was my little brother who got me to watch it and now I’m a bigger fan of them then he is.
