Here’s a disturbing fact: Emily says that Lord dickhead “left her for dead”, implying she was only unconscious when he buried her. This explains why her hand is reaching out, she woke up in her own grave and suffocated while trying to claw free.
And it's sad that she was taken advantage because she wanted the love of her life and her love was shattered till Victor saved her from the pain she must had from many years of being buried alive.
😰😰😰 now that’s completely unhinged
@@SophieLents It’s a very dark detail that I love to share lol
It explains why other hand doesn't have skin at all.
Omg😭
"Quit smoking"
*Guy dies*
"He quit living!"
Hahahaha
I was flabbergasted!
@@SophieLents You made me laugh so hard at that part! I doubt there will ever be a situation for it, but I'm gonna quote that whenever I get the chance, I swear! 🤣🤣🤣
There's actually an unused song called "Erased" that Danny Elfman wrote and sang for Corpse Bride. Victor sings about feeling replaced by Lord Buttkiss and believing he actually belongs with the dead. It would've been a great addition to the movie because it explains his sudden decision to die for Emily. It's beautiful and catchy, and I recommend giving it a listen.
To be fair, Victor was only ready to marry Emily because he was told that Victoria got married herself, so he could no longer get back to her, he had nothing else really left for him in the living world and he did bond with Emily, so yknow...
I'm convinced that what he felt for Emily was more platonic than what he felt for Victoria, but since he thought he could no longer have Victoria and knew how much it would mean to Emily he felt ok taking the step to stay with her (also, yknow, the decision to end your life does come easier when you're heartbroken ^^'...)
Ah, my sweet boy
@@SophieLents And also there is a cut song of Victor of being sad after hearing Victoria is getting married, which would've made his decision to marry Emily less out of the blue.
There's also the fact, that Victor felt he'd made a commitment do Emily; he'd promised - the only way out of that promise was through a loophole in the vows.
I agree with Victor, getting out of a promise on a technicality is sleazy and dishonest - a honorable person would stick to their contract, even if the fine print allows them an out.
@@SophieLentsPlus when he had only met both of them in the same day and didn't really know either of them that deeply it would make sense that whatever loyalty or bonds you may have are not gonna be as strong as our modern understanding of marriage when it's someone you've been with for years. There's an element of pragmatism to his situation
Victor only said yes to Emily because he thought he was too late with Victoria. He didn't know what was actually going on
I also got the sense, that he felt he'd made a commitment to Emily; even if he could get out of it on a technicality, it would still be a sleazy and dishonest way to end it.
Fun fact: this movies stop motion animation is so good, people were convinced it was actually CGI.
And Tim Burton was super offended by this, because he's proud of the art of stop motion, so when he made Frankenweenie, he really held back on it ON PURPOSE so they could tell it was stop motion.
I mean if people think that my artwork is tranced, I'd hold back on my work as well lol 🤣
Personally id be pretty flattered if people though my stop motion work was cgi. That means its that good.
Here’s the thing. Victor liked, cared about, and felt compassion for Emily. He was _in love_ with Victoria. But Victoria was then married off to someone else (he didn’t know it was to a gold-digging murderer). That meant he could no longer hope to marry her himself; he was ‘Too Late’; there was nothing more for him to go back to, so he might as well try and at least bring Emily some happiness, after all she’d been through. Having given his word, he was honorably prepared to keep it, and sacrifice an unexpected second chance to wed the girl of his dreams rather than break a promise to someone who had been so deeply hurt and wronged.
Does that clarify the confusion?
"Quit smoking! Ohhhh... he quit living." Best line 🤣👌
...And that is how I learned not to smoke as a kid.
No actually, my parents and grandparents smoked like chimneys, and I couldn't stand the smell, so I never felt any desire to try it myself.
@@LadyDoomsinger kinda like how I hate drinking because I saw the horror it can do to people by watching my mom. And it smells rank to me. I have a sensitive nose.
15:53
“What a b*tch!”
Literally 12 seconds later: “Aww, I kinda feel bad for her!”
If yoy think about it "I left you for dead" means he didn't quite kill her but instead burried her alive, that's why her hand was out of the ground, she was trying to scape. Again, "I left you for dead".
my guess is he stabbed her then buried her when she was still alive because he though she was dead but she was just unconscious, which resulted in her trying to claw her way out of the grave later when she woke up but ran out of air before completely reaching the surface... thus why in the end of the movie we see him stab the sabre in her ribs where there already was a hole, its an analepsis of the night of her death.
I was 7 when this movie came out, and I was *OBSESSED* with it. So much so that I memorized the wedding vows and resited them in my bedroom for months. And now my parents wonder why I am so obsessed with the macabre 🤷
"That's adorable! And that's the last time you will ever see me calling a dead animal cute."
Zero from nightmare before Christmas: " *breathes in disapproval* "
Wanna know why Emily was talking about the flowers in her bouquet like she was?
Each one is symbolic or meant to make certain things happen.
Roses= Symbolizes and meant to bring about and continue to make love eternal.
Lillies= Brings sweetness into their lives.
Baby’s Breath=… meant to bring as many healthy babies the couple wants into their lives.
I other words, her reaction to that flower was because she not only wanted to be someone’s wife.. but to be a loving mother.
As a new mom myself, that part breaks my heart.
6:46 that's how most arranged marriages are. They don't let the couple see each other until the actual wedding for fear they'd chicken out beforehand.
That's where the "bad luck to see each other before the wedding" superstition comes from.
This film took on a WHOLE NEW LEVEL with Sophie around!!!! 😅
Stylistic stop-motion + Tim Burton + Johnny & Helena + Danny Elfman’s score and music + Endearing romance and love triangle + Some of the most beautiful shots in cinema history = Masterpiece
This sounds familiar…hmm
@@thunderspikes4064 hmm, Sweeney Todd? The Nightmare Before Christmas?
@@afilmbee tim didnt direct a nightmare before christmas though. that was henry selick. and i could be wrong but danny elfman didnt work on sweeney if i.m not mistaken.
@@rashiednurmohamed6452 i know. i didn’t say “directed by Tim burton” I said “Tim Burton”, meaning Tim was involved in one way or another. I’m a big Henry Selick fan. And your right about Sweeney! The music was purely by Stephen Soundheim. but I’m just trying to guess the closest ones to the formula i mentioned.
There is actually a one minute long deleted song, which was victor's solo, right before he told emily that he wants to kill himself to marry her. It made no sense in the actual scene how he suddently changed his mind out of nowhere, but turns out this song was like his inner monologue questioning everything that had happened until now and how he came to this conclusion. You can see it full on youtube and honestly, they should've kept it, not just because is rly good but you can see how shallow the scene feels without it.
There was a theory (hopefully I'll explain this correctly) that Emily and Victoria were actually sisters, when she fell in love with L Barkis and it said that she took the family jewels, it would explain why the Everglots were poor. This would also explain that scene where Victorias parents think they remember L Barkis.
Also I really like how your one of the first people that I've watched who actually stuck with Victor and Victoria rather than with Victor and Emily.
Interesting theory, but I notice a few unexplained holes in it.
For one, there is no mention of Emily at all in Victoria's family (which could be explained by them denying her existence out of shame, but from a narrative standpoint it's weird.)
Second, there is no portrait of Emily among all the other family portraits (again, this could be explained by them having it taken down, but they specifically mention that Victoria "looks odd" compared to her mother and father - it is strange that they would think so, if they had another daughter of a similar appearance.)
Third, Lord Barkis would be insane to try the same con twice on the same family (granted, he could quite well be insane, but it's still a really weird thing for him to do.)
Fourth, if Lord Barkis had stolen the family jewels, he'd already know that Victoria's family was strapped for cash - or at least not obscenely wealthy enough to be a good target.
Considering that nobody remembers or mentions Emily among the living, I think it's much more likely that she fell for Barkis when he was rather young, possibly 10 or even 20 years earlier (his exact age is not revealed, but I'd guess somewhere between 30 and 40) - he could've run away with Emily when he was 18 or 20, which would also answer the question of how Emily could fall for his charm; he was probably more attractive as a young man, his intensity coming off as charming or roguish, rather than creepy/stalkery (though Emily probably was a bit naive about him, too).
I love this movie so much, especially Emily! I also love your videos, so glad you watched this ❤️
Aww, glad you enjoyed!
OMG, of course! Thank you so much for replying to me, it absolutely made my day! You are so funny and so pretty. I love watching your videos! ❤️

Sophie: Oh my god he quit living!
Ah yes, Victor and Victoria getting married
*....in the Victorian era* 👀
A match made in heaven
We need more films like this. This was also probably the last totally original Tim Burton movie.
Yay! One of my favorite movies of all time! It's my personal tradition to watch it every All Hallows' Day. I love the beautiful but sad story, the blueish colours and the music.
If I can recommend a short show, I would love to see you react to "Our Flag Means Death". Such a wholesome and cute rom com about pirates (and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard!)
Hello, Sophie! 👋🏾😀 So happy you made a reaction to Corpse Bride, it's immediately become my favorite movies from Tim Burton, along with The Nightmare Before Christmas. I think you should consider using it and James and the Giant Peach as part of your next watchlist, and I must let you know that the latter part does have giant talking insects but I can assure you that they're way better than the worm here!
OMG ALL THE SASSY COMMENTARY I CAN'T 😭😭😭

Help, five seconds into the movie and I couldn't agree more - he IS fine
HAHA! That slip up for Corpse Husband. Yes, shout out to him, indeed

Same!!!!!
It's ok. I have a super crush on Victor too. lol This movie was supposed to demonstrate the most repressive aspects of the Victorian Era. It is exaggerated in some ways for the sake of effect but there are a few interesting stereotypes from that time. For example, Victoria's family is the "old blood" with status but whose generations of extravagance have depleted their money and they find themselves required to marry into the "new wealth" coming from people who have made a lot of money via trade but have no distinguishing lineage. Another interesting point is the music. Victoria says that her mother considers the piano to be improper for her and there was a movement throughout the 1800s that discouraged young woman from engaging in hobbies that evoked too much passion or emotion. It would take too much to go into all that but it was a fascinating period. I only just started watching your video so let's finish!
Oh yeah, Corpse Husband, the secuel of Corpse Bride and precuel of Corpse Maid of Honor.
4:40 ok you got me laughing out loud with that one. Thank you 😂
your hair is everything
I have greatly enjoyed my journey of watching your reactions to movies since discovering you
Danny Elfman sang for Bonejangles. They spent a long time trying to find someone, but no one was perfect, so Danny just went, "Fuck it, I'll do it."
apparently his voice suffered a lot from singing in such a raspy voice lol
Nice seeing you on the Channel again. Got one or two movies staring Jack Black. Goosebumps 1&2! And happy Halloween 🎃
It was nice see your video since I did watch Corpse Bride few days ago. I could agree with some of your reactions.
And speaking of Tim Burton, I would recommend Nightmare Before Christmas because it’s both a Halloween and Christmas movie. 🎃🎄
It’s actually a Halloween movie. And imo that movie is overrated
@@thunderspikes4064 How is it overrated?! It’s a great Halloween movie. Plus, it’s a musical.
Perfect for on the night of the holiday, so you can make a nice transition into Christmas stuff after
@@nevamoore5192 Yes! Exactly!
@@rachelkelly2293 it’s good but not THAT good compared to Coraline or Corpse Bride or even Frankenweenie. The musicals numbers were off, the story felt slow and a bit weak but it wasn’t bad. It’s just overrated.
If you are a simp for any character then Wait until you watch the lorax 2012 film XD
In the film, the Van Dort family is very wealthy, because they are fish sellers. Then the Evergots are impoverished aristocrats. They need money so they don't end up on the street. That's why the family of Victor Van Dort (he is the groom) comes to their aid. Victor was nervous, and the registrar got up on his left leg. Victor's wedding ring fell out, so since he had a burning candle in his hand, he set his future mother-in-law's dress on fire. Out of shame, the young man fled into the forest. There he accidentally begged Emily, replacing her finger with branch. Emily's story is too sad. Actually, the stranger she was in love with wounded her, left her in the forest to die and took her money. It's Lord Barkis. Characters: Coachman of the Van Dorts-Matthew
Mother of the Bride-Maudlin
Father of the bride-Finis
Dead Bride-Emily Victor's fiancee-Victoria Tavern-Paul
If you haven’t already, watch the shrek films, the lion king, finding dory, wallace and gromit, the nightmare before christmas, wall e, tangled, prince of egypt, spirit, over the hedge, road to el dorado, and frozen
Don't feel ashamed. I love Victor too.

The town freaking out at the dead walking the Earth kinda reminded me of ParaNorman tbh (especially since they're both stop motion). I'd love to see a reaction to that film next lol.
I’ve never seen this movie. But these stop motion movies are perfect for Halloween!
Update: I watched Corpse Bride earlier today on Freeform and it was a great Tim Burton movie.

@@Viridiiana Yeah I did.
First Pitch Black from Rise of the Guardians, then Milo Thatch from Atlantis, and now Victor. Is your type perhaps an elegant, smart British man bonus points if tall, with dark hair and bangs?

You make a smart conclusion. Kudos. Barkis was Emily's fiance. Isn't it surprising to you that she didn't look for him after her death? Why? Because he was to blame for her death. But still, this situation with Barkis just proves that Emily is not vengeful nature. I knew it was Barkis, but reading Wikipedia helped me piece together the whole story. Emily is also gifted in music. This is not in the movie, but in Wikipedia is Emily's whole story. Emily had many suitors, but it was pointless for her to marry someone she did not know and she is not sure if he loves her for the money, the beauty she radiated or her soul that is pure. One day she met a stranger. Her parents were against their marriage. She was desperate. They agreed to run away together. But it wasn't all like a fairy tale. Emily took some money, diamonds and such. She left .She was waiting for her beloved, but she had no doubt that he would attack her and take her money. That's it!
Very good, I hadn't seen this in awhile
There was a cut part/song in the movie that would have explained why Victor had a change of heart to be with Emily but I don’t remember why it was taken out cause now the scene doesn’t make sense
loved this movie

Piano 🎹 = ✨Depression✨
The reason that a lot of classical music was sad sounding was because the Catholic Church from around the 16-18 hundreds ruled that any music that had a tempo faster than a calm heartbeat was evil. There is plenty of music from that time period that was NOT sad sounding and that is actually one of the reasons that people like Mozart and especially Beethoven were considered rebels i the music scene of the time. There is upbeat classical music, you just have to look for it.
Can not believe I’m early to a vid.

Same. Sorry, late reply.
Thanks for the video Sophie! :)
Well as far as Victor being willing to marry Emily so quickly, he always wanted to be with Victoria. He saw it like his life was over when she was going to be married to someone else. Emily was his rebound basically, she was always his second/next best option, so I wouldn't be too worried on behalf of Victoria as far as Victor's fidelity is concerned (I'd be more worried for his mental health honestly).
It’s ok sophie 😊 goth is my kink to lol
