Here's another Undertale cover for you all! This one is a version of Toriel's battle theme, officially named Heartache in the Undertale OST, and it's not very difficult to understand why this piece deserves its name. You're pitted against your own mother figure in a battle to escape for your home. It was especially heartbreaking for me as a first time player, I remember getting the spooks when the music stopped playing in the corridor that led to the door that Toriel was guarding. Overall, though, Undertale is such an artistic game that has so much beneath the surface. I can't remember the last time a game made me feel the way that Undertale has. I took many more creative liberties on this cover than I did with my Ghost Battle cover, mostly for the sake of extending a fairly short song to something with a bit more development and progression. I used the game footage to provide a bit of context or explanation of what the different parts of my arrangement are meant to symbolize. Essentially, the shifts in the different tempos and styles throughout the arrangement are meant to represent a sort of confusion that you get when fighting Toriel. (I killed Goatmom the first time, which inspired this thought.) It's the first time that you're confronted with an enemy that is relatively difficult to spare. Wow I don't know if I heard this at a perfect/worst time. I'm just here recovering from how amazing, depressing, and bittersweet Undertale was and then I hear this and my heart just shatters all over again. You know one has talent when they take something amazing and then make it fantastic. 100/10. I would literally go pay to see, hell, just to hear this for a couple of hours. This piece is just overflowing with art, as unique as the game itself, and I'm loving it. Don't even get me started on you included scenes to go along with what you were trying to express. Wow. A couple as in not many, not in 2 exact hours. Besides, I did all the endings and the hard mode demo, I'd say if you're going to feel sorry for me, let it be because I spent too much time on it rather than too little XD
I apologize if what I said made no sense at all, music terminology is not my strong suit. I was referring to how well the instruments are spread out to give the illusion that they are played on a stage instead of all being in the middle. I'm still trying to learn how to do things like this and I was in awe with how well you pulled it off!
My greatest regret is that I have but one upvote for this. No matter how many times I listen, it becomes more incredible; it is THE definitive Heartache for me now. When I hear this original, I hear a sax in my head now! Thank you for such a masterpiece.

If you ever played at a restaurant or a cafe I would pay money to get there somehow. I absolutely *LOVE* jazz and classical music. And you put undertale with jazz? Yes. So. Much. Yes. Seriously, I just come back and replay this song almost all the time!
I've gotta say, while you did great here, I think the other version of this you recorded for your "live at grillby's" album takes this to a whole new level. It stuck with a much more consistent tone and while the solo at the 2:30 mark here is good, the solo in that rendition absolutely blew me away. Regardless, great stuff! You do the saxophone justice with your great covers, and I love it whenever you upload something new.
just wanted to say you have phenomenal rhythm. i dont know if its because im a string player (we have notoriously bad rhythm-especially because i play VIOLA) but its so great how you stay on beat all the time. It probably seems like a small detail, but in recording keeping the sort of rhythm you do is hard as hell. Good job A+ amazing work son
This is one of if not my favorite Undertale cover. There is so much emotion, and the difference from this and the original is big. The original is fast paced and more intense, while this reflects the emotion that the player feels when they have to fight Toriel, and the sadness they feel if they choose to kill her. I love how the slowed tempo really represents Heartache, and I love the tempo change. It just puts more emotion and energy into the piece. Keep up the great work!
Wow such a good and heartwarming Cover. Defintly my favorite song in the game and you did it very well. Reminds me of when I got this fight and was shocked i had to fight her. There was no way I was gonna attack her. She felt like a Mother to me so i proceeded to just spare her until the end. I'm glad that i'm one of those who didn't kill her cause I indeed would have been "heartbroken"

So I listened to your covers before playing the game, and today I decided to begin recording episodes for an LP for this game. In recording, I've recognized the original versions of the songs in the "Live from Grillby's" album because of this. Unfortunately, in playing through the first part of this game, I destroyed Toriel. As I was a first-time player, I was still trying to learn the "Spare" and "Act" functionalities, but got impatient. But after Toriel died, I had this sense of guilt like, "was there a way to spare her?" In listening to this cover after going through the battle, I can feel the feeling of "I don't want to fight Toriel, but I need to do something to get home." This cover has done a great job in capturing that feeling.

There was no way I was gonna attack her. She felt like a Mother to me so i proceeded to just spare her until the end. I'm glad that i'm one of those who didn't kill her cause I indeed would have been "heartbroken"

So I listened to your covers before playing the game, and today I decided to begin recording episodes for an LP for this game. In recording, I've recognized the original versions of the songs in the "Live from Grillby's" album because of this. Unfortunately, in playing through the first part of this game, I destroyed Toriel. As I was a first-time player, I was still trying to learn the "Spare" and "Act" functionalities, but got impatient. But after Toriel died, I had this sense of guilt like, "was there a way to spare her?" In listening to this cover after going through the battle, I can feel the feeling of "I don't want to fight Toriel, but I need to do something to get home." This cover has done a great job in capturing that feeling.
