    I did see people complaining that this series was was too graphic and that it shouldn't have included crime scene photos, and to those people, I would suggest that maybe true crime isn't their cup of tea.

    I have noticed it is a very common trend to leave out how these people were raised and what happened in their childhood, cause for whatever reason, so many people don't seem to realize nor understand just how much your early childhood and how you grow up shapes you. No, they much rather just believe in the stupid idea that all of these people were just born as this pure evil monster.
    Edit: Acknowledging how you raise your kids is what shapes them when they grow up is not the same as excusing ones actions. Many people today still believe kids don't have any rights, parents buying their 8 year olds 18+ games, letting them watch R rated movies, many who beat their kids and disguise it as punishment, and more. Yes, most kids aren't going to grow up and become serial killers, however, it does mental scar them and does in some way shape or form mold them. Human brains do not fully develop until mid to late 20s. That last part of the brain is the frontal lobe, which is in charge or critical thinking, judgement, etc. Yet, people still refuse to acknowledge how damaging something can be to a kid, like going to go see a graphic R rated movie.

    • @mouseketeery
      @mouseketeery 3 года назад +49

      I think it's rather that they don't want it to seem that they're excusing the crimes in any sense. You can end up in a rabbit-hole, e.g: bad parenting created a killer, the bad parenting came from their own harsh upbringing, which was the result of a crappy childhood etc. back through time. Nobody is responsible for their own choices and actions - everything is always somebody else's fault.

    • @thenarrator4786
      @thenarrator4786 3 года назад +14

      @designerwaterbottle Bundy and Ramirez are both dead. i'm not really sure who's still writing them love letters, unless you believe in the power of Ouija boards
      but seriously, people who acknowledge that serial killers are terrible despite being physically attractive aren't the ones writing them love letters. it's the ones who can't really come to terms with their attraction to someone who's terrible, so they convince themselves that the serial killer must actually be misunderstood and in need of saving, or that he's actually innocent

      I think most of his groupies denied that he might be guilty, just like that woman who married him while he was in prison. It was only years later after they found DNA evidence that matched with one of his early child rapes, that she actually divorced him. And it was the same with Ted Bundy. I remember those interviews with his groupies back then who supported his innocence (and he also ended up marrying one of them while in prison). They like the image of bad boys and their notoriety but refuse to accept their crimes.

      He looked handsome in some pictures, but also dangerous. Of course a person who has grown up the way he did and took drugs, is a totally different person. He said in an interview that he felt very powerful. Drugs can make people feel that way. That energy can be sensed. It might seem a good one but it is actually fake, of course.
      If a man is energetic, he might seem strong and be more attractive.
      However, I guess he felt very detached from the lives of other people. He didn't have anything of what they had. He also stated in an interview that he didn't care about his life. This really showed how detached he was.
      I think any 'normal' human, male or female, would feel the need to help. Life is precious! It would be a good thing, especially if it worked.
      People usually see pictures of killers on TV and don't see the murder scenes and all its terrible details. This could lead to romantic phantasies.
      Well, it's a pity he wasted his life and ruined the lives of so many other people. Drugs are very addictive and destroy the lives of too many.

    As one of the women who are attracted to Ramirez (and no, I'm not proud of it, I just can't help it) I'm surprised by the reasons people have tried to explain this phenomenon with, or rather by the reasons they have NOT come up with. I can't speak for all women affected by this, but probably for a fairly large percentage, because this thing happens in so many regular relationships in which someone chooses a psychologically afflicted partner that's not good for them.
    The reason I'm talking about is a combination of a) wanting to be the chosen one and b) fixing a broken doll. Women like me see the abused child and the shattered soul in Ramirez and want to extinguish the pain he must have felt, and we enjoy the dream that this would make us the chosen one, meaning the only girl that would win his love while he hates everybody else. Having what no-one else can have and turning the evil prince into an angel - but only for us. Same as in shitty novels like Twilight and 50 Shades Of Grey. It's pathetic and it's an old fairytale many girls fall victim to and some never get rid of.
    The desire to heal outweighs the horror and disgust for the man's deeds. We imagine that if only he had been loved "correctly" before he went down the wrong path, things wouldn't have gotten so bad, which is probably quite a stupid assumption^^.
    There are also women who have violent or even murderous fantasies themselves (which in most cases aren't acted out on), and they feel that Ramirez wouldn't judge them but possibly rather show understanding. Liking things you can't talk about because they'd get you cast out by your friends and loved ones and/or locked up in a psychiatric ward can make you feel alien and lonely.
    Now, one might say that a person who has a desire for murder does not deserve love and friendship anyway, but I don't know if it's that easy. We don't choose the things that drive us, and having dark desires does not mean a person can't be compassionate, loving and caring.
    In the case of Ramirez, outward appearance is another factor. His facial features, posture and charisma were extremely attractive. He also displayed a certain, unusual kind of elegance, and the laid-back audacity he carried himself with did the rest. He comes off as an alpha male with a very vulnerable side. That contrast is unbeatable.
    I hope this sheds some more light on the the serial killer fan phenomenon. I've done a lot of critical self-reflection, I don't feel particularly smart for being enraptured by a child rapist and murderer and this thing is a psychological problem of it's own, but... well, it exists. Cheers from Germany :)
    Edit: I talked about women, but naturally, other sexes and genders are affected by this as well. Didn't mean to exclude anyone.

They focused so much on the police and detectives trying to understand him but very little on ACTUALLY understanding him. The series was poorly executed in my opinion. I also think they went a bit too far showing some of the bodies, like the one where the head was beaten and tons of blood was shown around it. They only censored a small area. It seems so unnecessary. Pictures of the blood is one thing, but the whole body surrounded in blood just felt so out of place of the context of the show

    Of course, not speaking for all women, but as you mentioned, it would be as if he were an actor portraying a part instead of a defendant himself.
    Also, and I think this is overlooked, the time between his killings, capture, and finally trial took a while and the impact of horror had ceased.

If he was sexually abused as a child, maybe by a priest or maybe shrugged off by his religious parents , I feel it could explain him "becoming a satanist". As it would be the opposite of what stood for his parents/ the church. I didn't love this series! I was excited to watch it, but it fell flat for me. I feel like the main detectives on the task force, Salerno and Carrillo, really talked themselves up. However, imo, they failed poorly! That missed opportunity at the dentist was unforgivable. Then they didn't want to release any information to the public, luckily they were forced to and the public is who was able to catch and detain him!

    I agree that it was a missed opportunity for a study into his psychology considering the unusual aspects of his behavior. It was only hinted at in a scene where a detective was speculating that the killer actually alerted his victims to his presence prior to him killing them so that he could see the look of terror on their faces A good character study would have done more to expose the sheer depravity in which he acted in committing his crimes.

    Hello doctor, good points. I just would add to the last question you cover - about the motivation of women - that people, no matter if they are male or female, try to expand their own self by entering into relationships with others. Basically, they search for someone who has what they rather lack. Since women have to suppress their normal aggressive tendencies from an early age on, they tend to search and encourage this in males. So they can live out this in an indirect way. This is quite an intelligent strategy, because you can live out aggression without having direct consequences of it (feelings of guilt, fear of punishment etc.) One often can whitness this tendencies in mothers of boys, too, this secret shine in their eyes when they whitness their sons behaving in a tough way. I don't find this to be a great characteristic of females, but it sure exists.

    Dr. Grande, Richard Ramirez was simply very good looking, and had a certain charisma. If he weren't psychopathic, a killer, and had vocal ability, he could've very well been a rock star. It's so hard, and sad to realize that his good looks and bad boy charm covered a deadly human being. He is really a puzzle.

    I just watched the series. You are right, it was more about the overall investigation and the police work done and the personalities of the police officers. It was okay as far as giving an overview of the case and information about the victims but it just left me hanging there when it was over. You gave way more information in this video about him than they did in their four-part series. I felt they could have had an expert in your field such as yourself to explain why he is wired the way he is and what caused him to do these things like you explained here. Thanks for your analysis of Ramirez and of this series.

    Sadly we lived this terrorizing nightmare! I had 4 children under 10 at the time living in Orange County California. Ramirez put fear in every family we knew. We slept all together in our living room for months along with other families doing the same. Then his mug shot hit. He was on the run. Then one day , he decided to mess with the East Los Angels Barrio, by trying to steal a pregnant woman’s car right down the street of our bathing suit sewing factory. BIG MISTAKE. Our brave neighborhood and employees beat Ramirez until he cried like a little girl. Mr Tough guy wasn’t so tough when the ELA macho hero’s starting plummeting him. Between Ramirez and the ex cop DeAngelo golden state killer who WAS the original night stalker, nobody in California was in a safe zone. A big bravo to the brave men who captured that evil incarnate monster, and eventually DeAngelo was finally caught after 44 years. Great job on your analysis Dr Grande. Love your work

    Yet again Dr. Grande thanks a bunch for nailing some excellent evaluation on the filmmaking process, especially with leaving unnecessary story elements out. You'd think after watching drafts of the work themselves they would have copped it. Maybe the filler is purely to flesh out the running time making what could be a decent piece of work revert into another typical one .
