This was so helpful! I've ALWAYS struggled with making my poses seem less stiff. Whenever I tried to draw a character in a certain pose it would always look bad and so i would avoid drawing poses by just drawing them standing straight from the front view. I also noticed that whenever I would trace the basic construction of a human pose and drew on top of it it would always look stiff. Cartoons can exaggerate limbs way more than real people can, so it would make sense that you would have to push things more to get a better pose.
Im not a native english speaker so I guess stiff means that the character looks like having a contracture? lol, anyways this channel is so nice, thanks for sharing advices everyone!
If you want more fluidity, you have to analyse the pose, and find out, how the force in the body moving with a rhythm, so where the mussel get more tense, you have to emphasise those lines, so the viewers can see where the movement in the body. The less affected areas must be less highlighted. Look up Force drawing with Michael Mattesi.
Holy hell.. THIS IS AMAZINGLY HELPFUL!! And it’s making me realize where I’m putting my style at, I have always made my poses too stiff and less exaggerated because I’m not as confident or courageous as an artist.. but you’re putting more confidence and courage in me that I’m ready to step up and do better! Thanks Mr. Silver!
Thanks for sharing this priceless tip! You're right about how copying directly from reference makes for stiff drawings, but this method will help me put more life in my characters. So happy.
I can't wait to read your books(I own 2 of them, The Silver Way and Character Gesture Drawing Manual), I may need to consider buying more of those Golden Ratio Calipers, just in case.
Very in depth lesson, Stephen! I really want to get better as an artist, but I've become rather impatient over the years. I think taking a step back and dedicating time to just practicing and learning as much as I can will help me to improve. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Apparently I make far too little use of references XD Thank-you for that, dude. It's a great tip. Now I just need to find the patience and continue to fight my own perfectionism at each stage. Practice makes perfect-er!
Great Video, thanks Stephan! Looking forward to starting your fundamentals class next week. Just finished Alex Woo's gesture drawing, excited to put those lessons into action!
Honestly Stephen's character designs are much better than the plain characters on the TV shows he worked. That's when you need to have your own ideas created.
Amazing video, thanks alot for share this great information. i really love your works and i really appreciate see your working process regards from argentina
I was just thinking, would it be good to do this over movie stills? Like if you watch a movie and you take screenshots of the actors and apply this method. A lot of times you wont get the whole body but I think it will be good because you'll get great poses.
Hey thanks I’ve been drawing people for a while and wondering where I am going with it. I really like going to the coffee shop copying people as a friend calls it. But this helped me think about how to make a jump. Thanks again. T
I met Stephen Silver at a small art school in 1997 when he was really young and I thought he was really good. Then I took a character design class from him in 2006 that he conducted in his home. Really good. A really focused dude.
Hey stephen, I feel like I don't need any instructors. I just look up some theory and practice it for a week and move on to the next essential or fascinating thing I decide to improve. Structuring it like this... Does it remove the mentor from the equation. Cause i give myself the homework and a ideal~ and than do it. What could a mentor do? I fail at thinking what they would do. All i can think of is them saying: "Hey good job! Keep at it! Why don't you take a break. Looks nice!"
Hmm, I think I get it. A mentor is a interactive, walking, talking~ step by step drawing video, personalized just for *your* learning. hah hah hah But really now, I can see the power of a mentor. Yeah.
as well as some of the stuff mentioned, a good mentor can keep you from developing bad habits and ensuring the time you spend studying and practicing is going in the right direction, and in an efficient manner.
A friend just posted this on our Comics: Art in Relationship facebook group. Really cool tips and great attitude. Although I take tons of photos, it is nice to have a lot of resources for figure drawing daily. Here is a list of resources I use to practice drawing figures everyday: line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/ www.quickposes.com/en www.posemaniacs.com/thirtysecond www.thesartorialist.com/ www.reddit.com/r/SkinnyWithAbs/ www.reddit.com/r/LadyBoners/ www.reddit.com/r/Climberchicks/ www.reddit.com/r/ClimbingPorn/ www.reddit.com/r/fitbodies/ www.reddit.com/r/hardbodies/ www.reddit.com/r/HunkyLadyBoners/ www.reddit.com/r/PrettyGirls/ www.photo-reference-for-comic-artists.com/site/index www.characterdesigns.com/#home-section
Can these concepts be applied to drawing from life? I like to sit and sketch people I see and have a hard time capturing a person fluidity when they pass my vision. It comes out stiff and accuracy of what I want to capture gets lost. I've changed my approach a bit now, instead of just being unhappy with my attempts, I do a quick, small thumbnail of the gesture and big shapes of a person and their clothing. I then REDRAW them, pushing that gesture and those shapes to be something unique. Thoughts?
I thought the same thing until I made it a habit. I'm still not the best but my drawings have improved tremendously. The sooner you learn this the better it will be, I've been drawing since I was 10 (around 17 years) and am no where near the level I should be at for that much time spent because I just tried to copy poses instead of breaking it down into shapes. Just realized this comment is 9 months old lol How is your art coming along?
This guy deserves is own Master Class series. :)
Ever considered giving some respect?
This guy?

Look up gesture drawing.
Start out with a gesture then apply construction shapes over it.

I LIVE for portraying emotion in my drawings! Thank you!
Everyone should sign up for the classes. They are excellent!
I really liked the "bow and arrow" metaphor. I'd seen the concept and understand it, but this makes it a lot simpler. Thanks!!

the more you practice basic the more it becomes like a common sense, and the more effortless appears your performance to be
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge🙏
This helped me out a lot, thank you so much.
Amazing! Starting this "challenge" today: every day at least one pose! thank you ♥
Hey thanks I’ve been drawing people for a while and wondering where I am going with it. I really like going to the coffee shop copying people as a friend calls it. But this helped me think about how to make a jump. Thanks again. T

Brilliant! I’d love to do a class or coaching.

SIR, YES SIR!

What could a mentor do? I fail at thinking what they would do. All i can think of is them saying: "Hey good job! Keep at it! Why don't you take a break. Looks nice!"
A good mentor will give you a solid critique and explain what is working and what isn't as well as whst to think about.
Hmm, I think I get it.
A mentor is a interactive, walking, talking~ step by step drawing video, personalized just for *your* learning. hah hah hah
But really now, I can see the power of a mentor.
Yeah.
A mentor is unbiased, and can fairly judge your work. You may overrate yourself, or judge too harshly.
as well as some of the stuff mentioned, a good mentor can keep you from developing bad habits and ensuring the time you spend studying and practicing is going in the right direction, and in an efficient manner.
another good question is if your mentor has his own style that is very different from yours, that would cause some struggle sooner o later?
what are u using to draw and what software are you using
+Tedworth mischief
When did you leave the UK Stephen?
+Simon Barnsley 34 years ago when I was 10
Manny love
Thanks😢

"The process of figuring stuff out". I was expecting "happy little accident". :c
Anyways, good video. :D
What's a good software for drawing. I have pc Windows 10
clip studio, paint tool sai, sketchbook, photoshop, corel painter, ms paint
This is hard. I still can't manage it.
+Antgirl89 just keep at it. Walking was hard at first too
Stephen Silver Yeah, the floor was harder though. Good motivation hahaha. Thanks.

practice gesture drawing by proko!! if you understand gesture drawing really well learning this will be easier
10:00 16:00
I don't get it. Isn't it "gestures"?
yes, but people dot understand gesture is more about observation and feeling than just drawing
7:33 so many hands....
all i draw IS throw up lel
Directions misunderstood now there's a bad drawing on my paper and vomit everywhere...
decide on an accent bro
Thanks😁😁😁
